They answered questions from the audience that regarded their campaigns and their policy preferences, which mostly focused on economic issues. The audience consisted of 209 undecided voters from the Richmond, VA area.

In which John Green teaches you about the end of the Cold War and the presidency of George H.W. Bush. It was neither the best of times, nor the worst of times. On the domestic front, the first president Bush inherited the relative prosperity of the later Reagan years, and watched that prosperity evaporate. That was about all the interest Bush 41 had, domestically, so let's move to foreign policy, which was a bigger deal at this time. The biggie was the end of the Cold War, which is the title of the video, so you know it's important. The collapse of the Soviet Union was the biggest deal of Bush's term, and history has assigned the credit to Ronald Reagan. We give the guy a break, and say that he helped. He was certainly expert in foreign policy, having been and envoy to China, ambassador to the United Nations, and head of the CIA. Bush also oversaw the first Gulf War, which was something of a success, in that the primary mission was accomplished, and the vast majority of the troops were home in short order. It didn't do much to address some of the other problems in the region, but we'll get to that in the next few weeks. Along with all this, you'll learn about Bush's actions, or lack thereof, in Somalia and the Balkans, and you'll even be given an opportunity to read Bush's lips.

His seeming knuckling under to the real hard-charging guys who want to fight about everything, use force to get our way in the Middle East.” He said Cheney built “his own empire.”
“I’ve concluded that Lynne Cheney is a lot of the eminence grise here—iron-ass, tough as nails, driving,” George H.W. Bush said. (One takeaway from the book is Bush’s love of the phrase “iron-ass,” which seems at once like a dated Yankee descriptor and also delightfully vivid.)...
He was even harsher about Rumsfeld, who he deemed an “arrogant fellow.””*

The 200th anniversary of the Presidency was observed as George Bush took the executive oath on the same Bible George Washington used in 1789. The ceremony occurred on a platform on the terrace of the West Front of the Capitol. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice William Rehnquist. After the ceremony the President and Ms. Bush led the inaugural parade from the Capitol to the White House, walking along several blocks of Pennsylvania Avenue to greet the spectators.

George Walker Bush (born July 6, 1946) is an American politician and businessman who was the 43rd President of the United States from 2001 to 2009 and the 46th Governor of Texas from 1995 to 2000. The eldest son of Barbara Bush and George H. W. Bush, he was born in New Haven, Connecticut. After graduating from Yale University in 1968 and Harvard Business School in 1975, Bush worked in oil businesses. He married Laura Welch in 1977 and ran unsuccessfully for the House of Representatives shortly thereafter. He later co-owned the Texas Rangers baseball team before defeating Ann Richards in the 1994 Texas gubernatorial election. In a close and controversial election, Bush was elected President in 2000 as the Republican candidate, defeating Vice President Al Gore in the Electoral College. Bush is the second American president to have been the son of a former president. He is also the brother of Jeb Bush, former Governor of Florida.
Terrorist attacks occurred eight months into Bush's first term as president on September 11, 2001. In response, Bush announced the War on Terror, an international military campaign which included the war in Afghanistan launched in 2001 and the war in Iraq launched in 2003. In addition to national security issues, Bush promoted policies on the economy, health care, education, and social security reform. He signed into law broad tax cuts, the PATRIOT Act, the No Child Left Behind Act, the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, and Medicare prescription drug benefits for seniors. His tenure saw national debates on immigration, Social Security, electronic surveillance, and enhanced interrogation techniques. His administration also withdrew the U.S. from a some international treaty processes, including the Kyoto Protocol on global warming.

George Herbert Walker Bush (born June 12, 1924) is an American politician who served as the 41st President of the United States (1989–93). He had previously served as the 43rd Vice President of the United States (1981–89), a congressman, an ambassador, a Director of Central Intelligence, and is currently the oldest surviving president.
Bush was born in Milton, Massachusetts, to Senator Prescott Bush and Dorothy Walker Bush. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Bush postponed going to college, enlisted in the US Navy on his 18th birthday, and became the youngest aviator in the Navy at the time. He served until the end of the war, then attended Yale University. Graduating in 1948, he moved his family to West Texas and entered the oil business, becoming a millionaire by the age of 40.
He became involved in politics soon after founding his own oil company, serving as a member of the House of Representatives, among other positions. He ran unsuccessfully for president of the United States in 1980, but was chosen by party nominee Ronald Reagan to be the vice presidential nominee, and the two were subsequently elected. During his tenure, Bush headed administration task forces on deregulation and fighting drug abuse.

William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton (born William Jefferson Blythe III; August 19, 1946) is an American politician who served as the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001. Inaugurated at age 46, he was the third-youngest president. He took office at the end of the Cold War, and was the first president of the baby boomer generation. Clinton has been described as a New Democrat. Many of his policies have been attributed to a centrist Third Way philosophy of governance.
Born and raised in Arkansas, Clinton became both a student leader and a skilled musician. He is an alumnus of Georgetown University where he was Phi Beta Kappa and earned a Rhodes Scholarship to attend the University of Oxford. He is married to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has served as the United States Secretary of State since 2009 and was a Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009. Both Clintons received law degrees from Yale Law School, where they met and began dating. As Governor of Arkansas, Clinton overhauled the state's education system, and served as Chair of the National Governors Association.

On the domestic front, the first president Bush inherited the relative prosperity of the later Reagan years, and watched that prosperity evaporate. That was about all the interest Bush 41 had, domestically, so let's move to foreign policy, which was a bigger deal at this time. The biggie was the end of the Cold War, which is the title of the video, so you know it's important. The collapse of the Soviet Union was the biggest deal of Bush's term, and history has assigned the credit to Ronald Reagan. We give the guy a break, and say that he helped. He was certainly expert in foreign policy, having been and envoy to China, ambassador to the United Nations, and head of the CIA. Bush also oversaw the first Gulf War, which was something of a success, in that the primary mission was accomplished, and the vast majority of the troops were home in short order. It didn't do much to address some of the other problems in the region, but we'll get to that in the next few weeks. Along with all this, you'll learn about Bush's actions, or lack thereof, in Somalia and the Balkans, and you'll even be given an opportunity to read Bush's lips.

Trump’s rise has confounded the Bush family and its allies. And Jeb Bush’s White House hopes are in peril, particularly if he’s unable to pull out a strong showing in Saturday’s South Carolina primary.

Trump has led polls in South Carolina, where Republicans face their next primary. He is trying to fend off attacks from his chief rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who describes himself as “a consistent conservative.” Bush is trying to pull ahead of Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Ohio Gov. John Kasich to emerge as the more mainstream alternative.
George W. Bush urged voters to back a candidate who will be “measured and thoughtful” on the world stage. A candidate who can win in November’s general election.
“All the sloganeering and all the talk doesn’t matter if we don’t win,” Bush said.
Jeb Bush vowed he could put Republicans back in the White House for the first time in eight years.
“I can beat Hillary Clinton,” he said of the Democratic front-runner. “I can promise you that.”

The former president’s return to presidential politics has been met with attacks from Trump about the unpopular Iraq war and the economic recession that began at the end of his administration.
“If the ex-president is campaigning for his brother, I think he’s probably open to great scrutiny,” Trump told reporters Monday.
As he praised South Carolina’s Republican Gov. Nikki Haley, the daughter of Indian-born parents, Bush pointedly said, “Thank goodness our country welcomed her parents when they immigrated here in 1969.”
It was a reminder of how much the Republican Party has changed. While Bush championed failed legislation that would have provided a pathway to citizenship for millions of people in the U.S. illegally, many current Republican presidential candidates have fought to outdo each other with tough enforcement policies, even mass deportations.
The 43rd president left office deeply unpopular with a nation fatigued by the Iraq War and angry over his botched response to Hurricane Katrina. But South Carolina is a state that has long been friendly to the Bush family. Presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush each won two Republican primaries in the state.

George W. Bush made his first public campaign appearance on Monday. He described the various challenges of the presidency and said his brother had the qualities to handle the task.
Charleston, South Carolina (CNN)Jeb Bush, who has struggled with the political baggage attached to his famous last name, has finally come to a place where his family is not a liability: South Carolina.
This state has been good to the Bushes, handing key primary victories to both George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush in their White House bids. As Jeb Bush looks to continue his family's winning streak on Saturday in the first southern primary, his campaign is becoming an all-hands-on-deck family affair.
George W. Bush stumped for his younger brother for the first time Monday night, attending a rally in North Charleston along with his wife, former first lady Laura Bush.
The rally comes after Jeb Bush's most forceful debate performance of the campaign, when he pushed back on Donald Trump for attacking his brother's national security record.
Bush earlier Monday met privately in Columbia with Gov. Nikki Haley (R) and her family, and he heaped praise on her in his remarks here. “Thank goodness our country welcomed her parents from India when they immigrated here in 1969,” said Bush, in an allusion to the anti-immigrant talk that has come from Trump and others.
Polls suggest that George W. Bush is popular among Republicans in South Carolina, but his legacy is more complicated. He remains a polarizing figure, certainly with Democratic and independent voters, but also among some grass-roots activists on the right who think he was not sufficiently conservative on fiscal matters.
The general public turned sharply against the Iraq war and Republican strategists think relitigating the war is hardly helpful to Jeb Bush or to the party.
Former South Carolina governor David Beasley (R) said Trump was smart to raise doubts about the Iraq war because it “created confusion in the minds of a pro-George Bush voter.”
“They’ll still like George, but they may think, ‘Maybe we did make a mistake,’” Beasley said. “They’ll think, ‘I love George, but I just don’t know if I can trust my vote with another Bush at this time.’ ”
Many of the people who packed the convention hall here to see George W. Bush had warm feelings about his presidency. Bonnie Welch, 70, a retired teacher from Myrtle Beach, said Trump’s attacks were unfair.
“President Bush was so taken back by what happened” on Sept. 11, 2001, she said. “As I was sitting and watching that on TV, the look on his face said it all.”
Bush appeared to relish being in the political spotlight again — especially in South Carolina, the state where he notched a pivotal victory in 2000.
He sprinkled his 20-minute address with homespun tales. He recalled walking in the Okra Strut in Irmo, a festival celebrating a local crop. He talked about the time he had breakfast at Tommy’s Country Ham House in Greenville and an animal rights activist drove into the parking lot and dumped manure to try to block his exit.
"I want to tell you - they lied," said Mr Trump. "They said there were weapons of mass destruction, there were none. And they knew there were none."
He also scoffed at Mr Bush's defence of his brother.
"The World Trade Center came down during your brother's reign, remember that."
Experts say that Mr Trump's tactic of attacking the former president is risky because he still maintains wide appeal among Republicans in South Carolina, from churchgoers to business leaders and retired military personnel.
On Monday, George W Bush, alongside his wife Laura, met US military veterans at an American Legion Post in Columbia, South Carolina.
Last week, he praised his brother's abilities in a radio advert, and Jeb Bush will hope his personal appearance will bring dividends on polling day.

George W. Bush has lent his name to fundraising emails and appeared at fundraisers for the campaign, and most recently he starred in a TV ad for the pro-Bush super PAC Right to Rise USA.
But the radio ad marks the first time the 43rd president will appear in a campaign ad for Jeb Bush.
"He respects the military -- he honors their families. He can make the tough decision to keep Americans safe and our country free. And in a time of crisis, he will be a steady hand," he says in the spot.
The ad comes ahead of George W. Bush's expected cameo on the campaign trail before next week's primary on February 20. South Carolina was a good state for both George W. Bush and his father, former President George H.W. Bush, and the campaign is hoping that touting the family name will generate some buzz.
"The Bush family name is long and deep in South Carolina," Sen. Lindsey Graham, who's now backing Jeb Bush after ending his own presidential bid, told reporters Tuesday night. "41 and 43 are well respected. The Bush family has been generations of servants. That will matter in my state."
