" Tucson, Arizona (Gazette) " written by Singer/Songwriters Dan Fogelberg, from "Windows And Walls" album (1984)
also "Portrait - The Music of Dan Fogelberg" 4-CD Box Set (1997) Disc 4. Special thanks to Bobby for Dan's liner notes.
Tucson, Arizona (Gazette) ~ Dan Fogelberg (Lyrics)
Tucson, Arizona rising in the heat like a mirage
Tony keeps his Chevy like a virgin locked in his garage
He brings it out at midnight and cruises down the empty boulevards
And he prowls the darkened alleys that snake between the city's thirsty yards
The lonely desert skies reflect the anger in his eyes and it is dawn
His father died of drinking and left five children sinking with his mom
His older brother Bobby never made it back from Viet Nam
With high school well behind him he lives at home and works this shitty job
And he thinks his '60 Chevy is the only true amigo that he's got
His heart is filled with sadness and his soul is like some ugly vacant lot
Mary Estelle Hanna came out from Louisiana for the sun
A deal gone bad in Dallas left her burned and broke and on the run
To make the rent and groceries she takes this job at $3.15 an hour
Serving shots of whiskey and tequila in some smoky red-neck bar
And she dreams some day she'll make her way to L.A. and become a movie star
Tony saw her working, he swallowed hard and asked her for a date
Mary laughed and answered "I would but every night I'm working late"
He said he had some cocaine that she could have if she'd just ride along
She said "What the hell, I may as well, I haven't had no fun in so damn long"
He picked her up at closing time they pulled out on the road and they were gone
Tony's mom got frantic when she found her son had not come home
Mary's roommate panicked and called the sheriff from a public phone
They asked her lots of questions
She tried her best to tell them what she saw
And late that night they found poor Mary lying in some narrow, dusty draw
The coroner reported that she hadn't been deceased for very long
Two weeks on they found it buried to the windshield in the sand
There inside lay Tony with a small revolver in his hand
The papers simply stated it must have been the drugs that drove him mad
The neighbors speculated what could make a good boy go so bad
Well, it might have been the desert heat
It might have been the home he never had

Newly released camera-trap footage captured in the Santa Rita Mountains just outside Tucson, Arizona, reveals a jaguar that scientists have been tracking for three years. The jaguar—known locally as ""El Jefe,"" which translates to ""the Boss""—is the only one currently known to inhabit the U.S. The species, which is classified as near threatened by IUCN, hasn't been widely spotted in the Southwest since the late 19th century. El Jefe is believed to have come from the closest breeding population, which is located in Sonora state, Mexico, more than 125 miles (200 kilometers) to the south.

Travel with me to Bear Canyon and Seven Falls in the Santa Catalina Mountains near Tucson, Arizona. The canyon here fills with water during the rainy seasons and becomes lush with greenery and wildlife during the monsoon months. Javelina, coyote, bobcat, mule deer, mountain lions, desert tortoise, canyon tree frogs, and a variety of lizards, snakes, and birds make their home here. Colorful wildflowers, wetland grasses, and shady trees, including cottonwood, walnut, sycamore, willow, and ash grow in a ribbon along the flowing water's banks. The sandy bottom of the canyon beneath the surface of the water is scattered with smooth gray gneiss rock. The series of seven waterfalls at the end of the 4 mile hike (8 miles roundtrip) offer a great place to relax, picnic, and cool off from the heat.
My trip to Bear Canyon and Seven Falls in the video took place in the morning of Friday, September 13, 2013.

“Feel the Bern,” join the revolution that built on love and fight for your freedom, or live and die as a wage slave to the multinational corporations on a dying planet run by sociopath. Like it or not, ready or not, that is your one and only choice… wakeup.... listen up and choose wisely: video will be live at: https://youtu.be/jTjYRbjRSZs
Please watch this short video of 8 minutes, gives the best overview, and is right on the money in every respect, when it comes to electronic voting --- be it via touch-screen computers, or paper ballot optical-scan systems. https://youtu.be/w3_0x6oaDmI
Verifying Elections Results Is NOT a Crime! From RTA Election litigation we learned as a fact that: “Every study of the security of computer voting systems has identified insiders such as company employees and or vendors and election department employees as the primary security risks. These same vendors when having their software certified, instructed the test labs "NOT" to check the software for security.” Video Risner in Court: https://youtu.be/JE0kOvFjn_0
History teaches us that elections without public accountability are nothing more than vote-counting in the dark, controlled by a county government, in the act of choosing itself and its cronies, while picking our pockets. Our message is simple: “We the People”, must have elections that are 100% transparent, that are completely verifiable, with a documented ‘chain-of-custody’, followed by mandatory election verification! Nothing less!
Pima County government can never be the sole verifier of its own secret elections.

An interesting documentary about the world famous US Air Force bone yard for surplus or out dated aircraft. Davis–Monthan Air Force Base (DM AFB) (IATA: DMA, ICAO: KDMA, FAA LID: DMA) is a United States Air Force base located within the city limits approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) south-southeast of downtown Tucson, Arizona. It was established in 1925 as Davis-Monthan Landing Field. The host unit headquartered at Davis–Monthan is the 355th Fighter Wing assigned to Twelfth Air Force, part of Air Combat Command (ACC). The base is best known as the location of the Air Force Materiel Command's 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), the aircraft boneyard for all excess military and government aircraft.
Overview[edit]
Davis–Monthan Air Force Base is a key ACC installation. The 355th Fighter Wing (355 FW) is the host unit, providing medical, logistical, mission and operational support to all assigned units. This wing's combat mission is providing A-10 Thunderbolt II close air support and OA-10 forward air controllers to ground forces worldwide. The 355 FW provides initial and recurrent training to all U.S. Air Force A-10, OA-10 and EC-130 pilots and crews. The 355th is also the ACC's executive agent for INF and START treaty compliance.
One of the wing's tenant units, the 55th Electronic Combat Group, is tasked to provide command, control and communications countermeasures in support of tactical forces with its EC-130H aircraft; and, employing the EC-130E aircraft, provide airborne command, control and communications capabilities for managing tactical air operations in war and other contingencies worldwide.
Two other major tenants, the 563rd Rescue Group (structured under the 23d Wing, Moody Air Force Base) and 943rd Rescue Group (structured under the 920th Rescue Wing, Patrick Air Force Base), are tasked to provide combat search and rescue support worldwide.
As the location of the Air Force Materiel Command's 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), Davis–Monthan Air Force Base is the sole aircraft boneyard for excess military and government aircraft. Tucson's dry climate and alkali soil made it an ideal location for aircraft storage and preservation.
History
The base was named in honor of World War I pilots Lieutenants Samuel H. Davis (1896–1921) and Oscar Monthan (1885–1924), both Tucson natives. Davis, who attended the University of Arizona prior to enlisting in the Army in 1917, died in a Florida aircraft accident in 1921. Monthan enlisted in the Army as a private in 1917, was commissioned as a ground officer in 1918, and later became a pilot; he was killed in the crash of a Martin bomber in Hawaii in 1924.
Origins[edit]
In 1919, the Tucson Chamber of Commerce aviation committee established the nation's first municipally owned airfield at the current site of the Tucson Rodeo Grounds. The rapid increase in aviation activities meant a move in 1927 to the site which is now Davis–Monthan Air Force Base. After the City of Tucson acquired land southeast of town for a runway in 1925, Charles Lindbergh, fresh from his nonstop crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, flew his "Spirit of St. Louis" to Tucson in 1927 to dedicate Davis-Monthan Field, then the largest municipal airport in the United States.
Military presence at the field began when Sergeant Simpson relocated his fuel and service operation to the site on 6 October 1927. He kept a log containing names of the field's customers, including Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, Benjamin Foulois, and Jimmy Doolittle. Doolittle, awarded the Medal of Honor for his 1942 Tokyo raid, was the first military customer at the field on 9 October 1927. The combination of civil and military operations worked well until the early 1940s, when military requirements began to require the relocation of civil aviation activities.
World War II[edit]
Davis-Monthan Airport became Tucson Army Air Field in 1940, as the United States prepared for World War II. The first assigned U.S. Army Air Corps units were the 1st Bomb Wing, 41st Bomb Group and 31st Air Base Group, activating on 30 April 1941 with Lieutenant Colonel Ames S. Albro Sr. as commanding officer.[5] In its military role, the base became known as Davis-Monthan Army Air Field on 3 December 1941. Air Corps leaders utilize the airfield, sending Douglas B-18 Bolo, Consolidated B-24 Liberator and Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers, for training and observation missions.
Postwar years
With the end of the war, operations at the base came to a virtual standstill. It was then the base was selected as a storage site for hundreds of decommissioned aircraft, with the activation of the 4105th Army Air Force Unit. The 4105th oversaw the storage of excess B-29s and C-47 "Gooney Birds." Tucson's low humidity and alkali soil made it an ideal location for aircraft storage and preservation, awaiting cannibalization or possible reuse — a mission that has continued to this day.

Travel with me to Sentinel Peak in Tucson, Arizona where I explore this iconic landmark's history and influence upon the city. The peak is popularly known as A Mountain because of the giant A on its side for the University of Arizona.
Additional Note: Solomon Warner erected a flourmill on the slope of Sentinel Peak between 1874-75. This mill led some people to refer to Sentinel Peak as Warner's Mill during that time.

Arizona, land of cowboys and Indians and Wild West towns plus, among its many natural wonders, the all pervasive colour red as displayed by the awe-inspiring rock formations of its mighty canyons.A thousand years ago the highly-cultured Anasazi and Hohokam Indians lived here, planting maize and vegetables in the meagre valleys and building walled towns into the cliffs of the canyons. They used the natural environment, protected caves in natural rock walls, which were accessible only by simple wooden ladders. For the past century, scientists from all over the world have investigated evidence that a gigantic meteorite crashed here, leaving behind it a huge crater: Meteor Crater. As the central and inner walls of the crater are similar to the landscape of the moon, preparation and training for the APOLLO space missions took place here. Located in North West Arizona is the 378 square kilometre National Park known as the ‘Petrified Forest’ with a surrounding desert which shimmers in all the colours of the rainbow. There’s the Agate Bridge, a huge fossilised tree trunk which spans twelve metres wide across a gorge and the amazingly beautiful Canyon De Chelly. Situated in the Navajo Indian Reservation, the Betatakin Ruins are the remains of historical dwellings which were carved into the rock by their original inhabitants from the 13th Century B.C. Wild West fans instantly recognise Monument Valley where, between colossal, 300 metre tall monoliths and sky-high rocky needles, John Wayne and countless other screen heroes fought off Indians and battled with ‘baddies’. A natural sculpture formed from undulating waves of stone, Antelope Canyon is a palette of colour which teases the eye. From the surface, a gaping crevice is the only means of access, tempting the curious to enter. In bold contrast, the Grand Canyon is 1,600 metres deep and 16 kilometres long, the most colossal gorge in the world. The sight of this gigantic natural wonder is the exciting climax of any trip to the magnificent and majestic land of Arizona.

In this travel video guide to Scottsdale, Arizona, I travel to Scottsdale, the so-called "Miami Beach" of Arizona. Located just to the east of Phoenix, Scottsdale is home to some of the city's best restaurants, bars, hotels and attractions.
I start of my travel in Scottsdale visiting downtown, otherwise known as "Old Town," the very walkable central part of the city full of small shops and a booming restaurant scene. It is also here that the city's roots can be traced back to the original farmers and settlers that called this otherwise barren part of the desert home back in the early 1900's.
I then head east into Tonto National Park to go kayaking down the Salt River with Arizona Outback Adventures (AOA), the area's premiere outdoor adventure company.
Next, I visit Taliesin West, the school/winter home of America's most famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. Here I explore the unique structures and landscapes that make up Wright's real-world laboratory for he and his students' architectural ideas.
Then I head back into nature with AOA to go hiking in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, a 30,000-acre preserve located just minutes from the city, and a perfect place to explore the unique landscape of the desert -- even when the temperature exceeds 100 degrees.
Last, I head inside and give a tour of my sweet pad at the Hotel Valley Ho, probably one of the coolest hotels I've ever stayed in. Harkening back to its Mid-Century roots, the hotel's unique architecture and swanky rooms makes it one of the premiere places to rest your head while staying in Scottsdale.

http://bestflights.co.za/north-america/usa/flagstaff - Visit for more information on Flagstaff, AZ
Flagstaff, AZ is located in Northern Arizona near the San Francisco Peaks and the Grand Canyon. Due to the high elevation of the city in Arizona it is much cooler as the desert situated in South Arizona. Flagstaff is a dry place but rain and snow falls in the area, which is enough for the ponderosa pine trees to flourish and grown all over the landscape. The city is also located on the historical "Route 66".
What to see
• Lowell Observatory
• Museum of Northern Arizona
• Arboretum at Flagstaff
• Riordan Mansion State Historic Park
• Arizona Historical Society-Pioneer Museum
• San Francisco Peaks
• Orpheum Theatre
• Oak Creek Canyon
• Grand Canyon
• Walnut Canyon National Monument
• Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument
• Wupatki National Monument
• Barringer Crater
• U.S. Naval Observatory
• Arizona Snowbowl
What to do
• Alpine Skiing at Arizona Snowbowl
• Mountain Biking
• Hiking
• Rock Climbing
• ZGI Career & Gear Fair (film festival)
• Pickin' in the Pines Bluegrass & Acoustic Music Festival
• Jazz on the Rocks Festival
• Made in the Shade Beer Tasting Festival
• AZ Stage HOG Rally

You would be hard pressed to find landscape better than that around Sedona, Arizona.
The West Fork Trail follows a tributary of Oak Creek through the Oak Creek Canyon in Sedona, Arizona. You can hike the entire canyon, but the West Fork Trail is a maintained portion for the first three miles. If you can manage it, try to get out here during the fall. You will see red, pink and gold leaves on the trees and along the path. The path gets very little sunlight, so during fall bring some warmer clothes.
At the start, you will see the ruins of a hotel built in 1926, and destroyed by a fire in 1980, called Mayhew's Lodge. The red rock canyon walls that rise straight above the creek provide an amazing backdrop of color to go along with the changing leaves. The rock you see is called Coconino sandstone, along with Kaibab limestone farther up. Different from the changing trees, you will see Ponderosa Pines that have an intoxicating smell, almost like vanilla.
Farther along the trail you can swim or relax in some of the natural pools. You can have a picnic on the flat rocks halfway down the trail as you enjoy the sound of the flowing water. Sometimes the water is so shallow along the rock, you can lay down on it while it flows. If you are feeling adventurous, continue on past the maintained trail through the canyon for another 14 miles.
You have to be prepared for even more water crossings and tougher terrain, but if you are up for it, it is worth it. West Fork Trail is a beautiful spot to visit in the fall or any other time of the year. It is a great place to relax and get away from the rest of the world. I am Carrie DeRudder, showing you Sedona.

WHY I LOVE... SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA
What to do, where to stay and how to play in the USA's best kept secret!
This is my first ever travel video / vlog / video blog... you get the idea. My brand new travel website passportstamps.uk has just launched so I thought I would give this youtube thing a go (I know I am late to the party.) I've been a journalist for 11 years so being in front of the camera instead of behind a keyboard is very new!
I caught the travel bug when I was just 16 and I begged my dad to let me go to NYC with my friend Kirsty - just us, no parents! It was amazing! Since then I just can't seem to sit still - I've bored everyone I know with my holiday stories and I am excited to share as many as possible with you though my new channel and hope I can inspire you to follow my trail of passport stamps and book your own adventures.

Scottsdale (O'odham: Vaṣai S-vaṣonĭ; Yaqui: Eskatel) is a city in the eastern part of Maricopa County, Arizona, adjacent to the Greater Phoenix Area. Named Scottsdale in 1894 after founder Winfield Scott and incorporated in 1951 with a population of 2000, the 2013 population of the city is estimated to be 226,918, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.[3] The New York Times described downtown Scottsdale as "a desert version of Miami's South Beach" and as having "plenty of late night partying and a buzzing hotel scene".[4] Its slogan is "The West's Most Western Town".[5]
Scottsdale, 31 miles long and 11.4 miles wide at its widest point, shares boundaries with many other municipalities and entities. On the west, Scottsdale is bordered by Phoenix, Paradise Valley, and unincorporated Maricopa County land. Carefree is also located along the western boundary, as well as sharing Scottsdale's northern boundary with the Tonto National Forest. To the south Scottsdale is bordered by Tempe. The southern boundary is also occupied by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, which also extends along the Eastern boundary, which also borders Fountain Hills, the McDowell Mountain Regional Park and more unincorporated Maricopa County land.[6].More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottsdale,_Arizona

Grand Circle Vacation 2013: Las Vegas, Zion, Page Arizona, Grand Canyon North

We did this same circle 11 years ago and we wanted to take our five and a half year old son on this trip. For us a good starting point is Las Vegas and since we had a wedding to go to their it worked out great.
Las Vegas and Zion National Park are only about 2.5 hours apart. Part of the Grand Circle is Bryce Canyon but the Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim closed on October 16th so we cut our trip a little short.
Las Vegas to Zion:
Basically we took Interstate 15 from Las Vegas to HWY 9 into Zion National Park. It took about 2.5 hours.
Zion to Page Arizona:
From Zion we took HWY 9 which goes through the park and out the 1.5 mile long tunnel to the city of Kanab. From Kanab we took HWY 89 into Page Arizona. About 3 hours with a few scenic stops.
Page Arizona to Grand Canyon North Rim:
HWY 89 to Alt 89 was closed through Page when we went so we had to take HWY 89 all the way back to Kanab then we took Alt 89 (89A) to HWY 67 which takes you directly to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. About a 4 hour drive. Normally through Page on 89A it would take 2.5 hours.
The Monument Valley, Grand Canyon South and Grand Canyon West are all part of the Grand Circle but we didn't have the time to do the complete route.
It is quite a scenic drive and there is a lot to see in each place.
In Zion if the climate is right (Summer) you can walk the Narrows which we did the first time we were there. There is also a hike up to one of the peaks which we didn't do since it is dangerous (Angels Landing) where six people have fallen to their deaths. Zion is just a spectacular National Park.
In Page you have the Glen Canyon Dam which is impressive just by itself. There is enough cement in the Dam to pave a 4 lane highway from Page Arizona to Chicago Illinois. It took 17 years for Lake Powell to fill after it was completed and it is rated to last for another 300-500 years. American built and engineered.
Lake Powell is nice and I am sure in the Summer it is a great destination. In the Winter there wasn't much going on.
There is also Horseshoe Bend which is about 1 mile up the road on HWY 89 from Wal-Mart (I know, go figure). You will see a small sign and a turnoff. It is about ½ mile hike down to it. It is amazing. People come from all over the world just to see it.
Antelope Canyon is also a must see. It is right up HWY 98 just before the giant factory you will see a turnout to the right. This is where you pay and take a tour. You can also do a tour from companies in town. If you want to see the famous light beams you will need to go in July. But be warned it is pretty crowded at that time. When we went it was sparse at most.
We were at the Grand Canyon North 11 years ago but didn't stay at the Grand Canyon Lodge at the North Rim. We decided this time to spend the night. The food at the Lodge was okay and the little cabins turned out nicer than they looked. It is a great place to stay and a very private experience as the North Rim is not a popular destination. But I think the North Rim is the best of the four Rims.
Our trip was almost cancelled due to the US government shutdown. At the last minute the Governors of Utah & Arizona stepped in and used State funds to open the park - literally at the last minute for us since we had reservations Saturday and Zion was reopened Saturday morning.
Here are some contact info for you:
Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge:
http://grandcanyonforever.com/lodging/
In Page there are a few hotels, we stayed at the Days Inn - it was an OK hotel:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g60834-Page_Arizona-Hotels.html
In Zion if you want to stay within a mile of the park entrance you need a hotel in Springdale UT. We stayed in the Best Western which was a great hotel with spectacular vistas and a free buffet breakfast.
http://www.utah.com/lodging/zion.htm
A note about the food on the trip:
We couldn't find a good restaurant anywhere on our trip. The food was average to bad. When the hotel breakfast buffet was the best meal of the trip (Best Western in Zion) you know your in trouble.
It is hard to get the grandeur of it all from the video and I suggest going yourself to each of these places. You won't be disappointed.

Mark took the first flight, and I took the second flight. I've combined both into this single video for easy viewing. We took this flight in Marana, AZ at Arizona Ultralight Aviation. The introductory flight lasted 20 minutes and cost less than $50. An amazing experience, and tons of fun! If you've never flown an airplane, I highly recommend it!
Marana, AZ is about 45 minutes north of Tucson, AZ and is about 10 minutes from Saguaro National Park.

TUCSON, ARIZONA — Newly-released video of a male jaguar roaming the forests of the Santa Rita Mountains near Tucson, Arizona has environmental conservationists giddy.
Footage of "El Jefe," America's only known jaguar living in the wild, has finally been caught on film, released to the public on Feb. 3. Researchers at the Center for Biological Diversity have spent the past three years trying to capture him on camera.
He's been photographed more than 100 times since 2013, but it's believed the video, filmed with remote sensor cameras, is the first glimpse of a wild jaguar in motion in the United States in more than six years.
Conservationists are excited about El Jefe's screen time, in large part because a Canadian mining company has established plans for developing a copper mine right in the middle of his territory. 750,000 acres of federally protected habitat were secured in 2014 for jaguar recovery, and the researchers are hoping a female jaguar wanders up from Mexico to join him at some point.

52mn documentary by Marianne Dissard about the Camaradas Lowrider Bike Club from South Tucson, Arizona,
Description
Low Y Cool was directed by local filmmaker Marianne Dissard in 1996 with funding by French TV channel Planête Cable. It was shot by noted documentary filmmaker Robert Kramer. The film has received praise for its sincere exploration of issues of cultural identity. It has been broadcast regularly since 1997 on French cable channel Planête.
In 2011, Low Y Cool got selected to be part of the AZ 100 INDIE FILM collection to celebrate the Arizona Centennial in February of 2012. The AZ 100 INDIE FILM is a project of the University of Arizona Confluencenter for Creative Inquiry in conjunction with the Arizona Media Arts Center. This project is the first step in establishing a Media Archives for Arizona independent films.
Before shooting the film in 1996, Dissard became a member of the Camaradas club, which provides a constructive alternative to gang-affiliation for many Chicano and Mexicano youths. The film documents the tensions which flared when the French-born Dissard brought a foreign crew to film the bike club for French TV. Through her dual experiences - as both an insider and outsider to the bike club and the community of South Tucson; as a Frenchwoman and new American - Dissard explores issues of race, history and community.
Low Y Cool features an array of Tucson notables, including DJs of KXCI's radio program Radio Xicana, Chicana poets Jessica Jaramillo and Marie Contreras, the Tucson Xicano Coalition and Miguel Ortega and, perhaps most colorfully, a bike mechanic and drifter named Shade Tree.
Like countless lowrider bike and car clubs all across the US, the South Tucson, AZ Camaradas Lowrider Bike Club, resolutely positioned as an alternative to gangs, offers Chicano and Mexicano youth an all too rare place to affirm their cultural identity while keeping them out of the street.
When French-born filmmaker and Camaradas club member, Marianne Dissard, brings in a foreign documentary crew to shoot her lowriding friends for French TV, tensions suddenly erupt in the local Chicano community. Fragment by fragment, the camera attempts to penetrate its intimity and unveil the mystery of its delicate balance, between American assimilation, Mexican roots and the lost glory of an Aztec past.
