Social support is the perception and actuality that one is cared for, has assistance available from other people, and that one is part of a supportive social network. These supportive resources can be emotional (e.g., nurturance), tangible (e.g., financial assistance), informational (e.g., advice), or companionship (e.g., sense of belonging) and intangible (e.g. personal advice). Social support can be measured as the perception that one has assistance available, the actual received assistance, or the degree to which a person is integrated in a social network. Support can come from many sources, such as family, friends, pets, neighbours, coworkers, organizations, etc. Government provided social support is often referred to as public aid.
Social support is studied across a wide range of disciplines including psychology, medicine, sociology, nursing, public health, and social work. Social support has been linked to many benefits for both physical and mental health, but social support is not always beneficial.

Researchers concluded that despite terrible health habits such as high fat diet, lack of exercise, chain smoking, excessive drinking, working in coal mines, the residents of Roseto, Pennsylvania in the 1950s were very healthy and had one sixth the heart disease of the rest of the country. All the researchers concluded that the secret was that the residents all lived in a tight-knit community where everyone looked out for their neighbors and everyone had a strong sense of belonging within that community. Living in isolation is terrible for your health and mental state. Having a sense of belonging and social support dramatically improves health and wellbeing. Also, in that community, the elderly were revered and cared for by family and community members. Get a FREE Preview of "In Your Own H...

Proposed new remedial teaching facility for Gordon Road Girls' primary school, motivated by the principal's passion for education, and funded by a private donor. The construction of the project has commenced and is due for completion at the end of 2015. All over the world, teachers and prents are becoming increasingly aware of learning difficulties amongst children at mainstream schools. Many parents are faced with the decision of moving their child from a regular educational environment to often more expensive remedial facilities or have them remain in a conventional system without being given the valueable attention necessary to ensure the quality of their schooling career. If these issues are not addressed at a primary school level, children with learning setbacks often develop emotiona...
Good afternoon, I’m still reporting on fake polls. Hats off to Addison Riddleberger columns for assembling this social media data. The 2016 elections will be the elections social scientists will look back on as the turning point year – the year where an analysis of social media will prove more predictive than paid polling. Assuming that is a correct prediction, what does that mean for the future of the Trump-Clinton presidential race. All of these stats are as of Aug. 4th, 2016. Let’s go to the data – Facebook Likes: Trump: 10,174,358 – 65.4% Clinton: 5,385,959 – 34.6% ---- Facebook live stream posts (latest): Trump: 135,000 likes, 18,167 shares, 1,500,000 views = 1,653,167 total = 83.0% Clinton: 11,000 likes, 0 shares, 321,000 views = 332,000 total = 17.0% *note: almost half of Clinton ...

Recorded on November 4, 2013. This presentation will focus on personal networks and their potential influences on behavioral risk factors for chronic disease among Latinos. Although the role of social networks in the propagation of health behaviors is a burgeoning area of research, there has been limited focus on specific subgroups that are at elevated risk for chronic disease such as adult Latinos. As a result, less is known about the relationship between social networks and health behaviors among Latinos whose network features and behavioral patterns differ from non-Hispanic Whites. Mental Health Care: Fighting Stigma with Social Support Public Health CGI is partnering with Refinery29 to address the topic of mental health. The number of young Americans affected by mental illness has increased 35-fold since 1990. Despite progress in the diagnosis and drug-based treatment of mental health disorders, more needs to be done to reduce the stigma of mental illness and strengthen the social support systems that are critical for effective treatment. While individuals in some cultures believe that mental illness is caused by supernatural forces, for others the subject is simply taboo, and these beliefs increase prejudice against those suffering with mental health problems. However, young people are leading the way in combating this stigma through self-expression and by streng...
