Winner 2014 | Jax Media LLC
Showcasing the voluminous comic talents and range of Amy Schumer, Inside Amy Schumer is a sketch show with all sorts of purpose. The fleet-footed Schumer will satirically embody vacuous white privilege in one sketch before pivoting to comically interrogate rape culture, body image norms or sanctimonious savior narratives in the next – and then engage in crisp banter about sexual failures and disappointments in person-on-the-street interviews. She regularly pushes past limits of comfort to mine rarely-explored and taboo territories. Her sketches can crackle with satiric energy, yet she can find just as much humor in a joke about poop, the awkwardness of sexting, or a herpes scare. The common factors are smart, thoughtful humor, and an admirably feminist dedication to challenging and disrupting gendered expectations of women’s behavior. Schumer’s comic voice is remarkably fresh, adding a great deal to television comedy that is otherwise rare or missing. Her profane persona belies a multifaceted comic inquisition of contemporary gender. Her timing and delivery as a comic are matched by the show’s smart scripts and by the timeliness of her material. For offering this smart, inquisitive, irreverent, and important brand of culturally aware humor, Inside Amy Schumer wins a Peabody Award.

Winner 2011 | Hello Doggie Inc., Busboy Productions, Spartina Productions, Comedy Central
In a satirical protest against megabucks politics, Stephen Colbert launched his own Super PAC, “Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow,” and began soliciting donations on his nightly show in accordance with the U.S. Supreme Court‘s Citizens United ruling that allowed unlimited political contributions with very limited transparency. The Federal Election Commission ruled that Colbert could indeed create and operate his Super PAC, and he was off and running. “Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow” became an active participant in the Iowa and South Carolina presidential primaries, making and airing outrageous political commercials that supported real candidates and issues. In other segments, Colbert exposed an important loophole in 501(c)4 corporations and, in “The Donating Game,” met a deep-pocketed, anonymous benefactor. Quipped Colbert: “I do not accept limits on my free speech but I do accept Visa, Master Card and American Express.” Through inventive comedy, sight gags and mock-strident rhetoric, The Colbert Report used its “megaphone of cash” to illuminate the far-ranging effects on our politics of the Citizens United decision. For taking television comedy into the real world of American electioneering and exposing the shadowy edges of a political system now awash in anonymous cash, The Colbert Report‘s Super PAC episodes receive a Peabody Award.

Winner 2014 | HBO Entertainment in association with Sixteen String Jack Productions and Avalon Television
Good satire helps citizens cope. It announces what’s wrong and assures us that others have noticed, too. It encourages us to come together – first to ridicule politics’ failings, then hopefully to overcome them – and it’s deeply funny while doing so. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is great satire, doing all this and more. Oliver uses his status as someone with one foot outside the U.S., one foot inside, to lodge an outsider’s uncompromising critique with the care of someone who needs to live here. And freed from commercial breaks, he capitalizes on the ability to maintain focus and go for the kill, at times offering the best, most cogent explanations of complex issues, at times becoming an investigative journalist as skilled at interrogating his target as any Progressive Era muckraker. His impact is evident in the astounding effect he had on the net neutrality debate, with the FCC receiving 45,000 new comments in the days following his telecast on the topic. His resolve not simply to explore headline news, but to pull back the proverbial curtain and show us the subtle mechanics at work in our nation’s democracy and culture is to be commended. For bringing satire and journalism even closer together, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver receives a Peabody Award.

Winner 2014 | Serial/This American Life/Chicago Public Media
Since 2000, when he was still a teenager, Adnan Syed has been serving a life sentence in a Maryland prison for the murder of Hae Min Lee. In Serial, Sarah Koenig and producers Julie Snyder, Dana Chivvis and Emily Condon explore whether the evidence that led to Syed’s conviction was sufficient, thereby offering a soulful examination of reasonable doubt in homicide trials. A productive experiment in long-form, non-fiction audio storytelling, the podcast hooked millions along the way, becoming one of 2014’s most talked-about and most eagerly-followed stories. As listeners were invited to parse the evidence and examine a murder case with almost unparalleled depth, they were also treated to meditations on memory, community, growing up, guilt, love, and criminality. Beautifully and intricately composed, utterly gripping, it’s a damning attack on disturbing flaws in the justice system. Serial rocketed podcasting into the cultural mainstream and inspired countless follow-up pieces and many a heated argument amongst friends about what actually happened on January 13, 1999. For its innovations of form and its compelling, drilling account of how guilt, truth, and reality are decided, Serial is honored with a Peabody Award.

Winner 2009 | Worldwide Pants, Inc.
Turmoil engulfed late-night television in 2009, but Craig Ferguson held his ground—and raised the bar. In his fourth year at the helm of The Late Late Show, the Scottish-born comedian perfected his offbeat take on the talk-show genre, proving that one of the silliest hours on television (what with the trademark hand puppets and skeleton robots) could also be one of the smartest. Case in point: Ferguson’s March 4 episode, the centerpiece of which was a lengthy interview with Archbishop Desmond Tutu. After spending his monologue on a detailed, incisive, often humorous recap of South African history, Ferguson turns the floor over to Tutu, letting the Nobel Peace Prize winner’s words unfold as an oral history of his life, his country and his continent. Ferguson manages the conversation with Tutu effortlessly, showing his natural curiosity and reverence for his subject. Between the many laugh lines (and the Archbishop subtly lands his fair share of these), the pair talk about suffering and forgiveness, and meditate on the nature of good and evil itself. Ferguson has claimed that his conversation with Tutu changed his life, and it has likely impacted many others. As the host himself might note, it’s a great day for America: The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson receives a Peabody Award.

Winner 2013 | Central Productions
For sketch comics Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, both sons of black fathers and white mothers, biracialism is liberation, a cultural all-access pass, a skeleton key to any lock they care to try. The duo impersonates a wide world of black men, from nerds to thugs, sports icons to buppies. They tackle racially charged issues and ideas like no one else on television. In their best-known recurring bit, Peele addresses viewers in the guise of a calm, carefully controlled Barack Obama and Key, as his aggravated id, Luther, barks what the President really thinks and feels. Fearless, they make a blistering point about the Trayvon Martin tragedy and dare, without being disrespectful, to get a laugh. Yet they are just as likely to transform themselves into Italians mobsters, Mexicans, Indians, even various and sundry white guys. Their sketches evoke Dave Chappelle one minute, Sid Caesar the next. They break new ground even as they lay claim to all of comedy’s traditions. For its stars and their creative team’s inspired satirical riffs on our racially divided and racially conjoined culture, Key & Peele receives a Peabody Award.

Winner 2005 | R&D; TV, in association with NBC Universal Television Studios
Battlestar Galactica is not just another apocalyptic vision of the future but an intense drama that poses provocative questions regarding religion, politics, sex and what it truly means to be “human.” The saga is set in motion when Cylon robots revolt against their creators with a devastating series of nuclear attacks. What’s left of the human race, fewer than 50,000 refugees, roam the universe in a fleet led by the spacecraft ‘Galactica.’ They must re-imagine their society even as they search for a new home. This dramatic premise, coupled with the threat from a new form of humanoid Cylons, affords diverse narrative and philosophical possibilities. Writers Ronald D. Moore, Toni Graphia, David Weddle, Bradley Thompson, Carla Robinson, Jeff Vlaming, Michael Angeli, and David Eick take full advantage to give us plotlines that are deeply personal and relatable, while never compromising their affinity and passion for science fiction. Moore, Graphia, and Eick are the executive producers. Harvey Frand is the producer. Directors Michael Rymer, Marita Grabiak, Allan Kroeker, Rod Hardy, Sergio Mimica-Gezzan, Robert Young, Brad Turner, Edward James Olmos, Jeff Woolnough, and Jonas Pate dazzle us, giving us a show that captivates on multiple levels. The cast includes Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Tricia Helfer, and Grace Park. For pushing the limits of science fiction and making it accessible to all, Battlestar Galactica receives a Peabody Award.

Winner 2000 | Mad Cow Productions, Inc., in association with Comedy Central
Out of the convoluted sameness of media coverage of the last presidential election sprang the irreverent and inventive Daily Show with Jon Stewart: Indecision 2000. Offering biting political satire, these scintillating segments had something droll and amusing to say about almost everything and everyone associated with American politics and the presidential election. The highly original pieces covered the campaigns, conventions, election night and recounts with flagging and with exceptional insight. Providing a bird’s eye view of an ever-expanding circus, Daily Show host Jon Stewart and Indecision 2000 lampooned politicians as well as reporters for taking themselves too seriously. Added to the precise timing, word play and wit of Mr. Stewart’s comic genius were the equally adept correspondents Lewis Black, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Vance DeGeneres, Mo Rocca and Nancy Walls. No one was safe, and no topic was sacrosanct as they chased celebrities, political figures and ordinary people-on-the-street in their quest for unpredictable and hilarious “news.” Executive producer Madeleine Smithberg, supervising producer Kahane Corn, studio producer Hank Gallo, director Chuck O’Neil, and senior producer Ben Karlin guided the talented team of writers including Eric Drysdale, Jim Earl, Dan Goor, Charlie Grandy, J.R. Havlan, David Javerbaum, Tom Johnson, Kent Jones, Paul Mercurio, Chris Regan, and Allison Silverman. For its gloriously entertaining coverage in the long American tradition of sidesplitting election punditry, a Peabody Award is given to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart: Indecision 2000.

Winner 2013 | Unicorn Black
In the Pakistani children’s series Burka Avenger, a symbol of women’s subjugation becomes a super-heroine’s mask. At the center of the action is a teacher, Jiya, who dons a magical cape at night to right the wrongs around her, from the ban on girls going to school, to child labor abuses, to environmental degradation. Taught by a spiritual master to rely on her own wits and to fight with a pen not a sword, Jiya is part Catwoman, part Muslim ideal. Never heavy-handed or forced, the storytelling unfolds with effortless charm as each episode amusingly turns stereotypes on their heads. The take-charge actions of Jiya and the children she defends are animated with imaginative verve, the comeuppance of the villains in each segment is celebratory, and the messages embedded are clear and aspirational. For its deft handling of a deadly serious theme –- the empowerment of women -– in a part of the world where it has particular and timely resonance, Burka Avenger receives a Peabody Award.

Winner 2005 | Comedy Central
No aspect of modern society is exempt from the scathing satirical campaigns mounted by the raucous children of South Park. Institutions, individuals, and ideologies—all are targets. So, too, is the series itself. Constantly doing battle with critics, with those whose values it challenges or lampoons, and with its own network, this cartoon for adults continues to push the boundaries of what is meant by “freedom of speech.” Censorship, the largest thorn in the side of creators/executive producers Trey Parker and Matt Stone, is attacked regularly, and in its ten years, South Park has broken down the barriers of television censorship, created new ones, and subsequently shattered them again. Victims of the show’s irreverence range from religious leaders and icons of all faiths to presidents and political leaders to celebrities. Moses and Mel Gibson, Saddam Hussein and Paris Hilton all have taken their lumps. In the process of unapologetically ridiculing individuals and groups, the series pushes viewers to confront broader issues such as racism, war, mob mentality, consumerism, and religious fanaticism. Simplistic yet surprisingly expressive animation enables the show’s creators to produce episodes in less than a week, blending immediately topical subject matter into each installment. In addition to Parker and Stone, who write, direct, produce, and provide voices for each episode, South Park relies on the work of producers Frank Agnone and Jennifer Howell, executive producer Anne Garefino, and director of animation Eric Stough. For pushing buttons and envelopes with stringent social commentary, South Park receives a Peabody Award.

Winner 2014 | Cartoon Network Studios
Adventure Time has perhaps the most oddly tiered audience in all of television: pre-adolescents, hormonal teens and self-aware adults, each demographic watching for different reasons – and some of the same. That’s because this series about the experiences of a teen-aged boy and his canine wingman in a post-apocalyptic land called Ooo, is animated alchemy, an impossible mash-up of comedy, horror, fairy tale and coming-of-age fable. The boy, Finn, is our proxy in this strange, pastel world, where the characters have rubbery, joint-less limbs (think Felix the Cat) and range from an Ice King to assorted mutant insects. Creator Pendleton Ward and his cohorts mix silliness and humor with complex, adult thoughts and feelings. The show doesn’t shy away from the philosophical or the scary, it doesn’t avoid the dark caves and corners of imagination, it embraces fear and wonder, excitement and unpredictability. It dumbs nothing down. It lets emotions stand. Characters feel sadness and fear and hope and uncertainty, the candy colors and goofy jokes notwithstanding. It treats those sad emotions as part of the same journey as the fun ones. For its remarkable, boundary-breaking blend of smart and silly, its bizarre yet recognizable characters and its preparatory weirdness, Adventure Time wins a Peabody Award.

Winner 1999 | GMA Networks
The heart wrenching stories exposed by GMA Network represent a comprehensive and on-going effort to depict the complexity of social problems in a region rife with political and social unrest. Executive producer Marissa Flores, with a talented team of producers, writer, directors and reporters, including Jessica Soho, Michelle Seva-Recto, Jay Taruc, Leogarda Sanchez and Rowel Cornejo, and powerful videography by Melchor Quintos and Gregg Gonzales, delve into the hardships shared by many Filipinos. In Kidneys for Sale, GMA Network entered a depressed area along the shores of Manila Bay and revealed how a colony of unemployed men have sold their kidneys for an average of $2,500 US dollars. After the documentary aired the government was forced to step in and impose regulations. GMA also entered the ring in its revealing investigation of the local boxing industry. The GMA expose went beyond the few champions who have become rich and famous to expose the corruption and exploitation that mars the sport. In perhaps its most courageous investigation, GMA investigators exposed the plight of child workers in a three-part series shown on the news magazine Brigada Siete. The story documented how children in the provinces were deceived by shrewd recruiters and were lured into forced labor conditions in the city. In unforgettable images, the reports illustrated how GMA initiated the rescue of the imprisoned young workers and facilitated their return to their families. For its outstanding commitment to investigative reporting, and for its efforts to achieve social change, a Peabody Award goes to GMA Network, Manila, Philippines.

Winner 2006 | Touchstone Television
Scrubs is so lively, so supercharged with quirky characterizations, imaginative editing, sight gags, musical asides and visualized daydreams, that it often seems more like a human “Loony Tunes” than a sitcom. Six seasons into its run, Bill Lawrence’s hellzapoppin’ hospital comedy’s creative pulse is as vital as ever. This was evidenced particularly by “My Way Home,” a sly, circuitous homage to The Wizard of Oz in which two of Sacred Heart Hospital’s young doctors doubt their brains and courage, respectively, while a third vies to assist in his first heart transplant. A fourth just tries to reclaim his day off. Scrubs’ writers, directors and multi-talented actors are unsurpassed at somersaulting between surreal zaniness and bittersweet drama with grace and precision. For fearlessly smashing traditional comic formulas, all the while respecting the deepest emotional and moral issues of its life-and-death setting, Scrubs receives a Peabody Award.

Winner 2004 | CBS News
The truism that television is a visual medium was confirmed in this report. But here the visual component consisted primarily of a set of still photographs that shocked viewers throughout the world and raised questions that are in many instances still open. Preparation of the report began long before it was aired. Details were checked. A court martial investigation was in process prior to the presentation of the report. 60 Minutes II became the first news organization to gain access to the Taguba Report and other documents that included names of civilian contractors at the infamous prison as well as statements detailing their interrogation techniques. In the report military officials acknowledge the unconscionable behavior of the few who engaged in illegal and morally intolerable practices at Abu Ghraib. Executive producer Jeff Fager, executive editor Patti Hassler, senior broadcast producer Michael Whitney, with producers Mary Mapes and Dana Roberson, associate producer Roger Charles and reporter Dan Rather, provided the viewing public with a truly significant report that revealed one aspect of the terrors of war. For a straightforward examination of an unwelcome and frightening aspect of the war in Iraq, a Peabody goes to 60 Minutes II: Abuse at Abu Ghraib.

Winner 2001 | Norman Twain Productions with Shelby Stone Productions, in association with HBO Films
A Peabody Award goes to Boycott, written by Herman Daniel Farrell, III, and Timothy J. Sexton and directed for Home Box Office by Clark Johnson. Norman Twain and Shelby Stone served as executive producers, with Producer Preston Holmes and Co-Producer James Bigwood. Boycott returns to events that should by now be among the most famous and familiar accounts of the African-American Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Once again a weary Rosa Parks, movingly portrayed by Iris Little-Thomas, refuses to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus. Once again she is arrested. Once again a youthful Martin Luther King, Jr., remarkably played here by Jeffrey Wright, begins to rally citizens to walk the hard miles to their jobs as janitors and maids, waitresses and laborers. Once again, a movement takes shape. But in this retelling we go behind and beyond the public record. In Boycott we explore the personal emotions, the domestic struggles, and the unknown conflicts that precede and under gird courage. We explore the consequences of moral choices. And we are reminded that these and similar choices must still be confronted one by one, by individuals and by society, if we are all to live free at last. For refusing to allow history to slip into “the past,” Boycott receives a Peabody Award.

Winner 1998 | Nickelodeon
In making the announcement of this year’s Peabody Awards, chairman of the board Neil Aronstam noted, “In a year when the Clinton/Monica Lewinsky story dominated the news, it is significant to note that Linda Ellerbee’s Nick News reporting on the Clinton scandal was the only coverage of this year-long ordeal that Peabody honored and felt worthy of recognition. Ellerbee’s straightforward explanation to her young audience proved to be the most insightful telling of the story both for children and adults alike.” That outstanding episode of Nick News was worthy of Peabody recognition. But, as the Peabody Board reviewed hundreds of additional hours of programming on topics as diverse as the crisis in Yugoslavia, the tragedy in Jonesboro, slavery in the Sudan, and others, it became obvious that a continuing trail of excellence led directly to Ms. Ellerbee. As host of Nick News, and as co-executive producer with Rolfe Tessem and senior producer Mark Lyons of Lucky Duck Productions (which produces Nick News for Nickelodeon), Ms. Ellerbee consistently provides explanations and interpretations of news events for children that represent the highest standard of journalistic ethics and integrity. Ms. Ellerbee has an ability to explain complex stories in a way that is simple to understand, but is never simple-minded. She listens to her audience, and never assumes a position of superiority. Absent in these reports are the conceits of celebrity journalism, as are some of the more over-utilized tricks of the trade, such as hidden cameras, dramatic music, or manipulative electronic editing and special effects. In recognition of her ongoing excellence with Nick News, and in tribute to her long and distinguished career in broadcast journalism, a personal Peabody Award is presented to Linda Ellerbee.
