Philo Taylor Farnsworth (August 19, 1906 – March 11, 1971) was an American inventor and television pioneer.[2] He made many contributions that were crucial to the early development of all-electronic television.[3] He is perhaps best known for inventing the first fully functional all-electronic image pickup device (video camera tube), the "image dissector", as well as the first fully functional and complete all-electronic television system. He was also the first person to demonstrate such a system to the public.[4][5] Farnsworth developed a television system complete with receiver and camera, which he produced commercially in the firm of the Farnsworth Television and Radio Corporation, from 1938 to 1951, in Fort Wayne, Indiana.[6][7]
In later life, Farnsworth invented a small nuclear fusion device, the Farnsworth–Hirsch fusor, or simply "fusor", employing inertial electrostatic confinement (IEC). Although not a practical device for generating nuclear energy, the fusor serves as a viable source of neutrons.[8] The design of this device has been the acknowledged inspiration for other fusion approaches including the Polywell reactor concept in terms of a general approach to fusion design.[9] Farnsworth held 165 patents, mostly in radio and television.
The Philo Awards named after Philo Farnsworth is an annual public-access television cable TV competition where the winners receive notice for their efforts in various categories in producing Community Media.
Several buildings and streets around rural Brownfield, Maine are named for Farnsworth as he lived there for some time.[1]
A 1983 United States postage stamp honored Farnsworth.
Farnsworth is one of the inventors honored with a plaque in the Walt Disney World's "Inventor's Circle" in Future World West in Epcot.[66]
The eccentric broadcast engineer in the 1989 film UHF is named Philo in tribute to Farnsworth.
On the Beakman's World Season 1, Episode 10, aired Nov 14, 1992 "Levers, Beakmania, & Television" Paul Zaloom appears as the "guest scientist" Philo T. Farnsworth explaining his own invention.
Since 2003, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) has awarded the Philo T. Farnsworth Corporate Achievement Award on an irregular schedule, to companies who have significantly affected the state of television and broadcast engineering over a long period of time.
The Farnsworth Invention, a stage play by Aaron Sorkin which debuted in 2007 after Sorkin adapted it from his unproduced screenplay, dramatized the conflict arising from Farnsworth's invention of TV and David Sarnoff of RCA's alleged stealing of the design.
The 2009 SyFy television series Warehouse 13 features a video communicator affectionately called "The Farnsworth." In the show's universe, Philo Farnsworth built at least five of these communicators after creating television (including a very personalised one used by him) though it's possible he made more than that. He also has a "Farnsworth aisle" in the Warehouse which includes not just some parts and items created by him, but some of his nuclear fusion experiments that one character claims to still be "kicking." Farnsworth also makes an appearance in an episode in a flashback set in 1944 during Season 2.
On January 10, 2011, Farnsworth was inducted by Mayor Gavin Newsom into the newly established San Francisco Hall of Fame, in the science and technology category.
In the video game Trenched, renamed as Iron Brigade, the main antagonist is a character named Vladamir Farnsworth, who created mechanical enemies known as "Tubes" which spread a deadly broadcast. This character name is alluding to Philo Farnsworth and Vladimir K. Zworykin, who invented the iconoscope.
He was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2013.
He is recognized in the Hall of Fame of the Indiana Broadcast Pioneers which notes that in addition to his inventive accomplishments his company owned and operated WGL radio in Fort Wayne. Indiana.

MESSAGE TO VIEWERS: [Click on "Show More" for rest of this message & description] I am sad to find out that several people have copied and re-posted most of my videos, using my exact same titles (this video is among over 400 videos that they have copied from me). The descriptions are either shown as I originally wrote them, partially shown, completely left out, or completely changed!! These copied videos often have different thumbnail pictures but sometimes they're the same. I have spent hundreds of hours preparing and uploading these videos and it is VERY UPSETTING & DISCOURAGING to discover this RAMPANT COPYING & RE-POSTING! It is just PLAIN MEAN! I would appreciate it very much if you would avoid any videos by "All Star Party" & "Kirdie Ferdin". Thanks to all of you for your views of my originally posted videos and your subscriptions to my channel. Sincerely, Violet Pearl. 4-17-2015
ABOUT THIS VIDEO: Bob Eubanks is the host, with appearances by George Jones and Bonnie Owens, Merle's second wife. Bonnie was formerly married to Buck Owens. Among the songs Merle performs (all of which he composed) are: Kern River, Kids Get Lonesome Too, The Running Kind, Sin City Blues, and Working Man Blues. Merle's son Marty Haggard is shown in audience at 12:43 and several other times during this show. Merle's good friend Ralph Emery ('Nashville Now' talk show host for 10 years) enters at 47:40.
MORE ABOUT BOB EUBANKS (in reply to Dolly kester's question under Comments):
Bob Eubanks was MERLE HAGGARD's manager for almost a decade. Bob was born on January 8, 1938. He was an American television/radio personality and game show host, best known for hosting the game show The Newlywed Game on and off since 1966. Eubanks received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his television work in 2000. The star is in front of Grauman's Egyptian Theatre, where Eubanks worked during the first years of his broadcasting career. In 2005, he received a lifetime achievement Emmy Award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. In 1966 Bob Eubanks became the host of The Newlywed Game which was ranked as one of the top three daytime game shows, for five consecutive years, between 1968 and 1973, and was ranked in the top three prime-time game shows, also for five years, between 1966 and 1971.
While not taping, he also pursued a career in the country music business, where he served as manager of such artists as Dolly Parton, Barbara Mandrell and Marty Robbins. The same year, he also signed MERLE HAGGARD to an exclusive live-performance contract, producing more than 100 dates per year with the performer for almost a decade. His first ending of his first-run network TV show, The Newlywed Game, ended in 1974, after 2,195 episodes, making Eubanks one of the most beloved and bankable game show hosts to date.
He did much more in the entertainment business, which you can read about on the Wikipedia site if you type in his name.

William Anthony "Tony" Brown (born April 11, 1933) is an American journalist, academian, comedian and businessman. He is best known as the commentator of the long running syndicated television show, Tony Brown's Journal.
Brown is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
1959, he received a BA in Sociology from Wayne State University.
1961, he received an MA in Psychiatric Social Work from Wayne State University. He is a former faculty member at Central Washington University and Federal City College.
1971, he became the founding dean of Howard University's School of Communication.
1989, he wrote, directed, produced and distributed a dramatic movie with an anti-drug message, The White Girl.
1998, wrote Empower The People: A 7-Step plan to Overthrow the Conspiracy that is Stealing Your Money and Freedom
2002, he was inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' Silver Circle.
2004, he became the dean of Hampton University's Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications. He held the position until 2009, when he stepped down.
Throughout the 1980s, Brown was instrumental in improving the outlook and atmosphere for African Americans in the academic world. He launched "Black College Day" in 1982, in what was called a one-man effort to save and support colleges dedicated to serving blacks. In 1985, he founded the Council for the Economic Development of Black Americans, whose motto is "Buy Freedom." The group's main platform is that blacks should patronize businesses displaying the "Freedom Seal," which signified a black owner who had agreed to be courteous, offer competitive prices, provide employment, give discounts, and stay involved in the community. Brown was interviewed in 1983 on KUCB radio station in Des Moines, Iowa. He was interviewed by Harry Flipping, Producer/Host of "Black Press Forum".
Brown's most inspired attempt to reach African Americans through the media came in 1988, when he released a cautionary film about cocaine abuse titled The White Girl.[2] He wrote, directed, produced, and distributed the film himself, and while it was panned by the critics, it gave Brown a medium in which to address what he perceived as "two destructive trends in society: drug addiction and self-hate." Ignoring the negative reviews, he circulated the film throughout the black community for the next 18 months. Local groups showed it for a small profit, benefiting both Brown and charitable causes.
In 1990, previous political independent Brown joined the Republican Party.
