In this episode, we look at some cool facts related to the U.S. Navy. America’s Navy has a long, proud tradition that stretches back more than 230 years to the days of the Revolutionary War. This is Five Things You Don’t Know About the US Navy. Fact One: While everyone knows Neil Armstrong’s role in the 1969 moon landing, his service to our nation actually began with a stint in the US Navy. In August 1947, Armstrong enlisted in the US Naval Reserve. He reported for active duty in February 1949. He then went on to fly 78 missions as a naval aviator during the Korean War – many of which were as an armed reconnaissance pilot. In fact, on September 3rd, 1952, while flying a Grumman F9F Panther, Armstrong was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Although he was able to fly the plane back to friendly territory, it was so severely damaged that he was forced to eject. After completing his tour of duty in Korea, Armstrong opted to stay in the US Naval Reserves for another 8 years, finally resigning in 1960. So, the first man to set foot on the moon was actually a US Navy veteran. Fact Two: Although the “Silent Service” represented less than 2% of all naval personnel during World War II, they accounted for the highest casualty percentage of all armed forces. Throughout the course of the war, 52 US Navy submarines were lost, taking with them more than 3,500 officers and enlisted men. Those losses average out to approximately 22% of all submariners being killed in action. Fact Three: Today the 21-gun Salute is fired in honor of the President, ex-President and President-elect of the United States, as well as to honor a national flag or the chief of state or sovereign of a foreign nation. The tradition of the salute, however, actually dates back to the time of wooden warships. When approaching a port, the ship would fire all of its cannons out to sea as a means of showing it was disarmed and therefore not a threat. Fact Four: While the US Navy recognizes its birthday as October 13th, 1775, it does not take an official stance on its birthplace. As a matter of fact, no less than six American towns and cities actually lay claim to the title. Included on the list is Machias, Maine, who claims the distinction because that’s where a small sloop armed with American woodsmen seized a Royal Navy schooner on June the 12th 1775. Beverly, Massachusetts and Marblehead, Massachusetts, have a competing claim that centers around the fact that in September 1775 General George Washington ordered the schooner Hannah fitted out as the first armed sea vessel of the American Revolution. Because the Hannah was outfitted in Beverly, but the captain and crew hailed from Marblehead, both towns claim to be the ship’s homeport, and therefore the Navy’s birthplace. In addition to these three, Providence, Rhode Island also claims the title because their residents were the first to propose a resolution to build and equip an American fleet in October 1775. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, claims to be the birthplace because that’s where the Continental Congress met on October 13th, when it voted to establish the Continental Navy and resolved to build two armed vessels. And finally, Whitehall, New York, claims the distinction because that’s where the first ships were actually built in the summer of 1776. Fact Five: The current US Navy leads the world in terms of size, strength and global reach. However, in comparison to its peak strength during World War II, today’s Navy is downright tiny. Remarkably, between 1941 and 1945 alone, the US Navy added nearly 6,000 ships to its total strength. This included an impressive 27 aircraft carriers, 77 escort carriers and more than 360 destroyers. Including the battleships, cruisers, destroyer escorts, transports and countless other vessels, this amounted to a peak strength of more than 6,700 operational ships during the war.

The US Navy Zumwalt class naval ship has just started sea trials and may become the most feared naval ship in the world. The United States Navy (USN) is the naval service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The M80 Stiletto is a prototype naval ship manufactured by the M Ship Company as an operational experiment for The Pentagon's Office of Force Transformation. It is notable for its Pentamaran hull design and carbon fiber construction, as well as its networked architecture. The M80 Stiletto is a U.S. Navy vessel designed for combat in littoral waters. It takes the name from the Italian Stiletto, a short knife or dagger. The 88-foot (27 m) long vessel has a notable hull design, an M-shaped hull that provides a stable yet fast platform for mounting electronic surveillance equipment or weapons, or for conducting special operations. The hull design does not require foils or lifting devices to achieve a smooth ride at high speeds in rough conditions. Its shallow draft means the M80 Stiletto can operate in littoral and riverine environments and potentially allows for beach landings. The faceted design suggests that the vessel has a low radar signature (i.e., stealth) in the frontal aspect and somewhat so from the sides. The M80 Stiletto is equipped with four Caterpillar, Inc. C32 1232 kW (1652 HP) engines yielding a top speed in excess of 50 knots (90 km/h) and a range of 500 nautical miles (900 km) when fully loaded. It can be outfitted with jet drives for shallow water operations and beaching. It has a topside flight deck for launching and retrieving UAVs and a rear ramp that can launch and recover an 11-meter rigid-hull inflatable boat (RIB) or Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). It weighs 45 tons unloaded, light enough that it can be hoisted onto a cargo ship, while still able to carry up to 20 tons of cargo. The ship is 88.6 feet (27.0 m) in length, with a width of 40 feet (12 m) and a height of 18.5 feet (5.6 m), yet has a draft of only 2.5 feet (0.8 m). The M80 Stiletto is the largest U.S. naval vessel built using carbon-fiber composite and epoxy building techniques, which yields a very light but strong hull. The prototype M80 Stiletto is expected to be in use in less than one year. Ships are expected to cost between $6 and $10 million. Historically, ships have evolved to become narrower and deeper to achieve speed and stability. The M Hull however become wider, because its distinctively wide hull captures the vessel's bow wave and redirects the energy under the hull. The Stiletto's double-M hull enables the craft to achieve an unequaled ride in rough seas at high speed, which is critical for the Navy SEALS and other Special Operations Forces, because it reduces the G-forces and related injuries these personnel are subjected to during training and on missions. The Stiletto is being tested by the United States Navy SEALs and Special Warfare Combat Crewmen, who operate small, fast craft in the rough littoral seas for which the vessel was designed. In 2006 and 2007, the Stiletto participated in Trident Warrior exercises, as well as a number of other naval exercises. This included three days of mine-clearing experimentation during Exercise Howler in 2006, when the vessel was operated by the Naval Special Clearance Team-1 (NSCT-1) from the Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado. A key feature of this vessel is that it can set up a network between a special forces team by launching an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that relays information between the team and boat. The Stiletto can also carry surveillance UAVs to provide reconnaissance for the SEAL team, and, using a clustered supercomputer on board, will be able to send real-time images to the team on shore. The Stiletto was selected by Time magazine as one of the Best Inventions of 2006 and one of two inventions in the Armed Forces category.[1] San Diego-based CONNECT named the M80 Stiletto as the Most Innovative New Product for 2006 in the General Technology category. In 2008, the Stiletto deployed on a 70 day mission for USSOUTHCOM as part of a joint agency operation that included the Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. Coast Guard.[2] In July 2012, the US Navy deployed a Stiletto to retrieve the NASA Inflatable Reentry Vehicle Experiment 3 (IRVE-3) test article[3] with 3 m (9.8 ft) diameter heat shield which splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean off North Carolina after being launched on July 23 by a sounding rocket from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility. The Stiletto is referred to as a maritime demonstration craft operated by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock, Combatant Craft Division, and based at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Ft Story, Va.[4] The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The first prototype system was offered to the U.S. Navy for evaluation on USS King in 1973 and it was determined that additional improvements were required to improve performance and reliability. Subsequently, the Phalanx Operational Suitability Model (OSM) successfully completed Operational Test and Evaluation (OPEVAL) onboard USS Bigelow in 1977. OSM exceeded operational maintenance, reliability, and availability specifications. DSARC-III followed OPEVAL which was followed by approval for production in 1978. Phalanx production started with orders for 23 USN and 14 Foreign Military Sales (FMS) systems. The first ship fully fitted out was the USS Coral Sea in 1980. The Navy began placing CIWS systems on non-combatant vessels in 1984. Design[edit] The basis of the system is the 20 mm M61 Vulcan Gatling gun autocannon, used since the 1960s by the United States military in nearly all fighter aircraft (and one land mounting, the M163 VADS), linked to a Ku-band radar system for acquiring and tracking targets. This proven system was combined with a purpose-made mounting, capable of fast elevation and traverse speeds, to track incoming targets. An entirely self-contained unit, the mounting houses the gun, an automated fire control system and all other major components, enabling it to automatically search for, detect, track, engage, and confirm kills using its computer-controlled radar system. Due to this self-contained nature, Phalanx is ideal for support ships, which lack integrated targeting systems and generally have limited sensors. The entire unit has a mass between 5,500 and 6,100 kg (12,400 to 13,500 lb). Upgrades Due to the continuing evolution of both threats and computer technology, the Phalanx system has, like most military systems, been developed through a number of different configurations. The basic (original) style is the Block 0, equipped with first generation solid state electronics and with marginal capability against surface targets. The Block 1 (1988) upgrade offered various improvements in radar, ammunition, computing power, rate of fire, and an increase in maximum engagement elevation to +70 degrees. These improvements were intended to increase the system's capability against emerging Russian supersonic anti-ship missiles.

The new Russian Admiral Gorshkov Class Frigate is the worst news for the US Navy. The Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates, also known as Project 22350, are a class of frigate of the Russian Navy. They have been designed by the Severnoye Design Bureau, Saint Petersburg, the lead ship being named after Sergey Gorshkov. Design[edit] Project 22350 is the effective successor of the Krivak class. Unlike their Soviet-era predecessors the new ships are designed to perform multiple roles. The ships are to be able to execute long-range strikes, conduct anti-submarine warfare and to carry out escort missions. Production[edit] The Russian Navy has set a requirement for 20-30 such ships.[8] The design of the ship, developed by Severnoye PKB (Northern Design Bureau) FSUE in St. Petersburg, was approved by Naval Command in July 2003.[9] The plan is to fully replace the older Project 956 Sovremenny class destroyers and Project 1135 Burevestnik class frigates in four Russian fleets.[10] The lead ship, Admiral Gorshkov (actual name Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov), was laid down on 1 February 2006 in Severnaya Verf Shipyard at St. Petersburg.[11] In late October 2008 the Russian deputy prime minister, Sergei Ivanov, announced that the first ship in the class would be ready by 2011. He said the timely construction of combat ships is a priority task of the Russian shipbuilding industry.[11] The lead ship completion date was announced first as 2009, but later as 2010, and then as 2011. Latest report states that the frigate will join the Russian Navy in November 2013.[12] On 24 June 2009, during the "МВМС-IMDS 2009" International Naval Expo, the Commander in Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky, announced that the production of a second Admiral Gorshkov class frigate would begin at Severnaya Verf shipyard in St. Petersburg by the end of the year.[13] In November 2009 the Severnaya Verf shipyard in St Petersburg announced that it would start the construction of the second ship of the class Admiral Kasatonov on 26 November.[14] The ship was laid down in a ceremony attended by representatives of the Russian Navy, the St. Petersburg administration, and Admiral Igor Kasatonov - the son of the ship's namesake, Vladimir Kasatonov.[15] In December 2014, one engine from Admiral Kasatonov was transferred to Admiral Gorshkov.[16] The first frigate was floated out of the launch dock on 29 October 2010. The ship was only 40 percent complete and then began to be fitted out.[17] At present, main mechanical equipment and systems providing safe launching has been installed, including a combined diesel and gas turbine (CODAG) powerplant, gear assemblies, drive shafts and screws, and electric power supply facilities. Further works will be performed at the shipyard's fitting quay.[18] On August 21, 2012, the Severnaya Verf shipyard announched that it had taken out two four-year loans worth RUB 16.23bn (approx. USD 509.88m) from state-owned Sberbank. The United States Navy's Sea, Air, Land Teams, commonly known as the Navy SEALs, are the U.S. Navy's principal special operations force and a part of the Naval Special Warfare Command and United States Special Operations Command.[3] The SEALs' duty is to conduct small-unit maritime military operations which originate from, and return to a river, ocean, swamp, delta, or coastline. SEALs can negotiate shallow water areas such as the Persian Gulf coastline, where large ships and submarines are limited due to depth.[4] "SEAL" is always capitalized in reference to members of the Naval Special Warfare community. The Navy SEALs are trained to operate in all environments (Sea, Air, and Land) for which they are named. SEALs are also prepared to operate in a variety of climates, such as desert, arctic, and jungle. (November 2013) Origins[edit] The modern day U.S. Navy SEALs can trace their roots to World War II.[4] The United States Navy recognized the need for the covert reconnaissance of landing beaches and coastal defenses. As a result, the Amphibious Scout and Raider School was established in 1942 at Fort Pierce, Florida.[7] The Scouts and Raiders were formed in September of that year, just nine months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, from the Observer Group, a joint U.S. Army-Marine-Navy unit Scouts and Raiders[edit] Recognizing the need for a beach reconnaissance force, a select group of Army and Navy personnel assembled at Amphibious Training Base Little Creek, Virginia on August 15, 1942 to begin Amphibious Scouts and Raiders (joint) training. The Scouts and Raiders mission was to identify and reconnoiter the objective beach, maintain a position on the designated beach prior to a landing, and guide the assault waves to the landing beach.[4] The first group included Phil H. Bucklew, the "Father of Naval Special Warfare," after whom the Naval Special Warfare Center building is named. Commissioned in October 1942, this group saw combat in November 1942 during Operation Torch on the North African coast. Scouts and Raiders also supported landings in Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, Normandy, and southern France.[12] A second group of Scouts and Raiders, code-named Special Service Unit No. 1, was established on 7 July 1943, as a joint and combined operations force. The first mission, in September 1943, was at Finschafen on New Guinea. Later operations were at Gasmata, Arawe, Cape Gloucester, and the East and South coast of New Britain, all without any loss of personnel. Conflicts arose over operational matters, and all non-Navy personnel were reassigned. The unit, renamed 7th Amphibious Scouts, received a new mission, to go ashore with the assault boats, buoy channels, erect markers for the incoming craft, handle casualties, take offshore soundings, clear beach obstacles and maintain voice communications linking the troops ashore, incoming boats and nearby ships. The 7th Amphibious Scouts conducted operations in the Pacific for the duration of the conflict, participating in more than 40 landings.[4] The third and final Scouts and Raiders organization operated in China. Scouts and Raiders were deployed to fight with the Sino-American Cooperative Organization, or SACO. To help bolster the work of SACO, Admiral Ernest J. King ordered that 120 officers and 900 men be trained for "Amphibious Raider" at the Scout and Raider school at Fort Pierce, Florida. They formed the core of what was envisioned as a "guerrilla amphibious organization of Americans and Chinese operating from coastal waters, lakes and rivers employing small steamboats and sampans." While most Amphibious Raider forces remained at Camp Knox in Calcutta, three of the groups saw active service. They conducted a survey of the upper Yangtze River in the spring of 1945 and, disguised as coolies, conducted a detailed three-month survey of the Chinese coast from Shanghai to Kitchioh Wan, near Hong Kong.[4] Naval Combat Demolition Units[edit] In September 1942, 17 Navy salvage personnel arrived at ATB Little Creek, VA for a week long course in demolitions, explosive cable cutting and commando raiding techniques. On November 10, 1942, the first combat demolition unit successfully cut cable and net barriers across the Wadi Sebou River during Operation Torch in North Africa.

The US Navy has released footage purportedly showing the Iranian Navy firing unguided rockets in the strategic Strait of Hormuz near the Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier and other Western warships and commercial vessels. The 45-second black and white video shot from a Seahawk helicopter reportedly shows “fast inshore attack craft” of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard firing rockets close to the Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, the USS Bulkeley destroyer, the FS Provence French naval frigate and some commercial ships on December 26. The video was declassified in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. Washington first reported the incident in late December, saying that prior to live-fire exercise Iran gave a 23-minute warning over maritime radio. The US has slammed the unguided rocket drill as “unsafe.” The rockets “passing coalition ships and commercial traffic within an internationally recognized maritime traffic lane is unsafe, unprofessional and inconsistent with international maritime law," Commander Kevin Stephens, a spokesman for the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, said at the time. The US Central Command called Iran's actions “highly provocative.” Tehran immediately rejected the US report, calling it “psychological warfare,” saying Iranian naval forces had not conducted any exercises in the Strait of Hormuz. “The publication of such false news under the present circumstances is akin to psychological warfare," Ramezan Sharif, the Guard's spokesman said. On Saturday, in a statement released with the video, Stephens said that despite the “provocative” incident most interactions with Iran forces in the area were “professional, safe, and routine.” Other News The commander of the Navy's Carrier Strike Group 15, based in San Diego, has been fired due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command amid allegations that he used his government computer to watch pornography. Rear Admiral Rick Williams was removed from his position on Friday, a Navy release stated. Williams was relieved of his duties by 3rd Fleet boss Vice Adm. Nora Tyson after just six months in the position "based on the initial findings of an ongoing investigation into the alleged misuse of government computer equipment." Williams was found to have looked at pornographic images on his government computer during a routine inspection, according to The Navy Times source. While this violated Navy rules, the misuse of the computer did not involve any classified material and the investigation is ongoing, the source added. "They have enough information to say it wasn't just a mistake," the source said. "It was extensive enough that they knew it was not just an error." Williams had been the head of Carrier Strike Group 15 since June. Its mission is to train Pacific Fleet Carrier Strike Groups, Amphibious Ready Groups, and independently deploy surface ships prior to deployment. Prior to this he commanded Navy Region Hawaii and Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific from 2013 through 2015. Captain Chris Barnes will serve as a temporary replacement at CSG 15 until a permanent replacement is named.
