My Carolina recognizes Parker Evatt with the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award
A degree in mechanical engineering usually leads to a career in manufacturing, but Parker Evatt’s bachelors led him to a life of building people’s lives.
Evatt, BS ’57, MCJ ’78 was the first director of the Alston Wilkes Society, an organization that helps inmates re-enter society, provides housing and job placement for veterans and operates group foster homes for children.
“I believe in helping other people especially the downtrodden,” says Evatt, who gives a lot of credit to his strong Christian faith.
Evatt worked at the non-profit for more than 20 years, even after being elected to the S.C. General Assembly. One of his greatest accomplishments in the legislature was his work to create a department of education inside the prison system.
“If you just send a person to prison, lock them up and throw away the key, then you haven’t helped anybody. Because when they get out, they’re still going to be illiterate with no job skills. What are they going to do? Go back to their old friends,” says Evatt.
Evatt left elected office to head up the state Department of Corrections, where he continued to work to reduce the recidivism rate of inmates. Twenty years after retiring, he continues to volunteer to help vulnerable populations.
The alumni association named Evatt the recipient of its 2014 Algernon Sydney Sullivan award, which is given to the alumnus who exhibits outstanding service to his country that goes beyond what’s required by his profession.

Sydney Vacation Travel Guide - Travel Australia 2015
Perched on the East Coast of Australia, Sydney, is the vibrant capital of New South Wales.
The Sydney Tower is the perfect way to get acquainted with the city. From Circular Quay it's possible to get almost anywhere else in the city. Nearby is Sydney Harbour Bridge. Just across it is Luna Park, renowned for its vintage fairground rides.
A short ferry ride from Luna Park is Darling Harbour, home to the National Maritime Museum. A few blocks away is the Powerhouse Museum.
Sydney Opera House is Sydney's most iconic sight. Behind it are the Royal Botanic
Gardens and the Sydney Domain, containing Government House, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Across the Pyrmont Bridge is the Sydney Sea Life Aquarium. More creatures can be found at the Wild Life Sydney and Taronga Zoo.
Bondi Beach is famed for its sands. The seaside suburb of Manly provides a quieter beach experience. The coastal paths to North Head offer stunning views of Sydney from afar.

Sydney, Australia Travel Guide - Must-See Attractions
http://bookinghunter.com
Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia. Sydney's urban area is in a coastal basin, which is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Blue Mountains to the west, the Hawkesbury River to the north and the Royal National Park to the south.
The most important places to visit in Sydney are: Sydney Opera House (among the world's most recognized landmarks. Set on the Sydney harbor, it is an unforgettable sight), Sydney Harbor Bridge (simply called "the bridge" by locals, courageous ones can even climb up the bridge), Bronte Beach (lesser known than Bondi, it is a beautiful beach, popular amongst families), Blue Mountains (an unspoiled mountain range filled with Eucalyptus trees. It is located 30 miles from Sydney, and there are plenty of hiking trails), Bondi Beach (Sydney's most famous beach, its lively promenade is as exciting as the beach) and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. If you want to save time and money, the most important Sydney travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. Today Sydney is one of Asia-Pacific's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its sunny weather, fine beaches and great landmarks like the Opera House.

Hey guys! Alexis Joy, from www.alexisjoyvipaccess.com here! In April 2015, I went on a mesmerizing and remarkable trip to the "Land Down Under" - Sydney, Australia. I was blessed to go for the very first time to Sydney, Australia in 2013 and INSTANTLY fell in love with the country. From the relaxed, laid-back vibe to all the breathtaking wonders like the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, I was yearning to go back ever since my last trip. I had the most phenomenal time returning back to Sydney, Australia and on this trip I was able to see the Sydney Opera House again, go to the Taronga Zoo and have the once in a lifetime opportunity to CLIMB THE SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE!
Since I can't take you all with me on the trip, I wanted to take you all virtually around Sydney, Australia! See my trip in 3 minutes as I show you Sydney, Australia's greatest landmarks and show you things to do in Sydney!
Hope to meet many more viewers all across the world - until then, comment below and tell me or tweet me at @alexisjoyvipacc / @thealexisjoy what YOU would like to see more on this channel? Where do YOU want to see me do another "Exploring ... With Alexis Joy" video - I want to know!

XOXO,
Alexis Joy

My Australia: Sydney 2015
My week in Sydney, Australia was simply the most memorable week I can recall. ..Maybe I'm being a bit biased since it's quite recent but it was a week for the ages and I got a chance to spend it with an incredible host who I met in Guangzhou, China 6 weeks prior. I call her the Queen of Australia and the goddess of Oceania because she's quite something to behold...an incredible human being!
She really set the highest standard possible for what every vacation week should be. I tried so much and did even more and said "wow" more than a million times. Every moment felt so natural and special and of course the foods were as delicious as they were diverse. Omelettes, meat pies, pizzas, even sweet potatoes and regular fries delivered such tantalizing flavors to my senses. And of course I can't forget the people...The people in Sydney were extremely welcoming, friendly and adorable with hospitality and "tiny crowds." I often joked about how cute and tiny the crowds were and how fast and seamless you could get things done even during the supposedly "crowded" Vivid events (there's only about 4.5 million people in Sydney so the crowds were pretty small compared to other places I've visited, especially Shanghai, China.)
I did occasionally forget about the driving on the left side of the road and of course walking on the same side as well. Apparently, I crossed the streets extremely slowly. This trip truly expanded my horizon in every area imaginable and my passion for traveling has only been infused with more energy. There's so much to do, so much to taste and so much to experience. God grant me the strength because I am forever an Explorer and I refuse to age with regrets of things and places I didn't do and go! I do hope to see the Queen again. I certainly owe her one and I've made it clear to her that if she ever sets foot in North America, I'd be her host and I'll do my best to return the favor. Please enjoy our summary video below and live vicariously through me! http://humoredin.com/myaustralia/

William Sydney Porter (September 11, 1862 – June 5, 1910), known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American writer. O. Henry's short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization and clever twist endings. William Sidney Porter was born on September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina. His middle name at birth was Sidney; he changed the spelling to Sydney in 1898. His parents were Dr. Algernon Sidney Porter (1825–1888), a physician, and Mary Jane Virginia Swaim Porter (1833–1865). They were married on April 20, 1858. When William was three, his mother died from tuberculosis, and he and his father moved into the home of his maternal grandmother. As a child, Porter was always reading, everything from classics to dime novels; his favorite works were Lane's translation of One Thousand and One Nights, and Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy.
Porter graduated from his aunt Evelina Maria Porter's elementary school in 1876. He then enrolled at the Lindsey Street High School. His aunt continued to tutor him until he was fifteen. In 1879, he started working in his uncle's drugstore and in 1881, at the age of nineteen, he was licensed as a pharmacist. At the drugstore, he also showed off his natural artistic talents by sketching the townsfolk.
The Four Million is the second book written by O. Henry while he served time for embezzlement in a penitentiary in Ohio. The book is a series of short stories which take place in New York City in the early years of the 20th century and are representative of the surprise endings that popularized O. Henrys work. They also capture his use of coincidence or chance to create humor in the story. O Henry wrote about ordinary people in everyday circumstances. He is quoted as once saying, There are stories in everything. I've got some of my best yarns from park benches, lampposts and newspaper stands.

Ive got some of my best yarns from park benches, lampposts and newspaper stands.
