Pan of people walking in market STORYLINE Yemen is calling on the international community to support the country''s development financially, as the country''s withering economy is buckling further in the wake of ongoing internal conflict with Al Qaida, multiple political crises, poverty, and widespread corruption. The United States increased its counter-terrorism aid to the Yemeni government, from zero in 2008 to 67 (m) million US dollars last year, an amount Washington says will double in 2010. But the Yemeni government says the United States and other nations must also provide economic aid to tackle deepening poverty that it says fuels support for al-Qaida among Yemen''s swelling population of 22 (m) million. Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi told reporters on Tuesday that an upcoming international conference on Yemen''s fight against al-Qaida, to be held in London on January 27, should also address the government''s war with Shiite rebels, known as the Hawthis, and possibly address reform. The conference, to be attended by the United States and European countries, should focus on promises of counter-terrorism help as well as economic aid for Yemen, the poorest country in the Arab world, al-Qirbi said. Yemen''s government recently vowed to work with the US in stamping out the estimated hundreds of Al-Qaida fighters who have built up strongholds in the country''s remote regions. Many regional observers say Saleh''s regime itself must change.
