West African truck drivers spend days, weeks, and sometimes months dealing with corrupt border officials and illegal checkpoints on harrowing delivery trips that should take just a few hours.
--
The truck driver holds a mythic stature in American music, from the hayseed hagiographies of Slim Jacobs and Bobby Sykes to the liner notes of Big Black's Songs About Fucking. There aren't as many country songs about African truckers, but they are no less the virile champions of industry and gluteal fortitude as their US counterparts. On their backs rest the burden of an entire continent's economic development and through their bloodstreams runs a hell of a lot of the continent's HIV.
Trade in West Africa is perennially fucked, partially because the colonial powers of the 19th and early 20th centuries chopped the place up into a pizza pie of nonsensical borders, but also because most post-colonial governments in the area were so unabashedly corrupt we had to coin the term "kleptocracy" to describe them. Driving a semi full of margarine a US state's length to its delivery point often involves passing through 3-4 separate countries and navigating the byzantine customs and immigration processes at each port of entry. Then there are the internal checkpoints manned by local police and customs agents on the lookout for smugglers, or non-smugglers who can be intimidated into coughing up a bribe. Then there's just fuckers who'll pull you over and straight-up rob you. Infrastructure ain't always so hot here, either.
All of which turns shipments which would take a few hours in Europe or America into grueling, day-cum-week-cum-monthlong affairs punctuated by long and unpredictable periods of complete standstill. Which, in addition to wasting fuel and driving up the cost of goods with every unplanned stop, also fuels the sort of boredom that can only be fought by dumping money into the less savory sectors of the economy. Namely booze sales and roadside prostitution. Which is where the AIDS come in.
Intrigued by the African long-haul trucker's dual reputation as the foundational building block of West Africa's would-be robust economy and lotharious Johnny AIDS-leseed, we hitched a ride with a trailer full of soap to see just how hard it is to get from point-A to point-basically-A-and-a-half.

Unrest in the Civil War-torn West African state of Liberia continues to erupt.
On Thursday rebels from the United Liberation Movement for Democracy (ULIMO armed with grenades and spears took over the National Bank in protest at the dismissal of its governor.
The protest was resolved without violence, but the incident has added to a growing sense of tension in the country.
A West African peace keeping force is trying to implement a peace accord signed last August, but has been attacked by rebel forces in the diamond rich region in the north west.
The rebel convoy of ULIMO and the Liberian Peace Council leave the capital Monrovia for the frontline.
On Thursday their supporters took over the National Bank for the day after its governor was replaced.
The bodyguards of the leaders Roosevelt Johnson and George Boley mete out rough justice to a hapless motorist who happened to crash into the convoy.
The bodyguards then took the man's car as compensation for wrecking their own.
They continued on to the West African peacekeeping force ECOMOG's checkpoint at the Po River bridge.
They had to wait before permission was given, but they were soon on their way again.
Two miles beyond the bridge ECOMOG's influence ends and bandit country begins.
These are the lawless roads that British novelist Graham Greene wrote about so vividly in his book, Journey Without Maps.
Along the way the bodyguard remove the barriers as they approach the ULIMO frontline.
ULIMO has been waging a running battle against ECOMOG forces. Clashes have killed 10 peace keepers and dozens of civilians in the last week.
ULIMO and L-P-C supporters greeted their comrades from Monrovia with war dances and song.
Next stop was the town of Klay, 25 miles north west of the capital.
Just beyond was the burnt out ECOMOG convoy which rebels had destroyed in the recent fighting.
The destination was Tubmanburg, scene of clashes between ECOMOG troops and rebels.
Residents say the West African peacekeeping force shelled the town, killing many people.

Liberia's civil war began in December 1989 and formally came to end in August 1995.
An interim government was installed in September to prepare for elections this year, but the violence continues despite the ceasefire.

Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia, is a country in West Africa bordered by Sierra Leone to its west, Guinea to its north and Cote d'Ivoire to its east...
Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia, is a country in West Africa bordered by Sierra Leone to its west, Guinea to its north and Cote d'Ivoire to its east. It covers an area of 111,369 km sq and is home to about 3.7 million people.
Liberia is a country with historical ties to the United States. It was founded by freed black slaves during the pre-Civil War antebellum era of the nineteenth century. The capital, Monrovia, was named after James Monroe. Liberia's flag closely resembles the American flag, reflecting the historical ties of Liberia to the United States.
History
Anthropological research shows the region of Liberia was inhabited at least as far back as the 12th century, perhaps earlier. Between 1461 and the late 17th century, Portuguese, Dutch and British traders had contacts and trading posts in Liberia. The Portuguese had named the area Costa da Pimenta, later translated as Grain Coast, because of the abundance of grains of melegueta pepper.
In 1822, the American Colonization Society which was the primary vehicle for returning black Americans to greater freedom in Africa, established Liberia as a place to send people who were formerly enslaved. This movement of black people by the A.C.S. had broad support nationwide among white people in America. While the institution of slavery in America grew, reaching almost four million slaves by the mid 1800s, a growing population in the U.S. chose to emigrate to Liberia as well. African-Americans gradually migrated to the colony and became known as Americo-Liberians, from whom many present day Liberians trace their ancestry. On July 26, 1847, Americo-Liberian settlers declared independence of the Republic of Liberia.
Liberia retained its independence during the Scramble for Africa, but lost its claim to extensive territories that were annexed by Britain and France. Economic development was hindered by the decline of markets for Liberian goods in the late 19th century and by indebtedness on a series of loans, payments on which drained the economy.
On April 12, 1980, a successful military coup was staged by a group of noncommissioned army officers led by Master Sergeant Samuel Kanyon Doe. The soldiers were a mixture of the various ethnic groups that claimed marginalization at the hands of the minority Americo-Liberian settlers. In late 1989, the First Liberian Civil War began and the country was in state of war to varying degrees until 2003. Liberia is recovering from a devastating civil war that ended with a ceasefire in August 2003.
While the country is now on the mend, it has not yet redeveloped the necessary infrastructure to sustain a large increase in tourism, with little for the average visitor outside Monrovia. Towns like Buchanan, Ganta etc are little more than a collection of shanty houses with no decent hotels or food. Monrovia in general is calmer than the more far-flung areas although the situation countrywide is improving with the presence of UN Peacekeepers. Fear should not stop you enjoying your visit but act with caution. Travel outside Monrovia is very difficult and not advisable on your own.
Climate
The equatorial climate is hot year-round with heavy rainfall from May to October with a short interlude in mid-July to August. During the winter months of November to March dry dust-laden harmattan winds blow inland causing many problems for residents.

Last night on OWN’s Where Are They Now?, Raven Symone sat down with Oprah and made a comment that is stirring up a lot of controversy on social media.
When pressed by Oprah about others thinking of her as a gay person first and foremost, Symone turned the focus to race as well. “I want to be labeled a human who loves humans,” she said. “I’m tired of being labeled. I’m an American, I’m not an African-American. I’m an American.”
You can tell from Oprah’s reaction that she knows how people are going to react to that one, and if this small sampling from Twitter this morning is any indication, people are not happy with Symone:
It will be interesting to see if/how Symone chooses to follow up on her comments later today. If she says anything, we’ll be sure to let you know.

The Voodoo Macbeth is a common nickname for the Federal Theatre Project's 1936 New York production of William Shakespeare's Macbeth, featuring an all-African American cast directed by Orson Welles. The production relocated the setting of the play from Scotland to a fictional Caribbean island based on Haiti, and acquired its nickname due to its use of voodoo imagery in place of the witchcraft in the original play. A box-office sensation, the production is regarded as a landmark theatrical event for several reasons: its innovative interpretation of the play, its success in promoting African-American theatre, and its role in securing the reputation of its 20-year-old director.

2015 presented numerous challenges and various initiatives have helped to alleviate the immediate suffering of vulnerable populations and provide solutions to transform and uplift their lives.
In the coming years, UNFPA intends to pursue its mission to support countries in accelerating the demographic transition and benefiting from the demographic dividend. This demographic dividend, which is an opportunity to seize, corresponds to the acceleration of the inclusive growth that could result from the age structure of the population.

On an estimate, illegal and unregulated fishing costs West Africa alone US$1.3 billion a year. The livelihoods of artisanal fishing people are being destroyed, Africa is losing a vital source of protein and nutrition, and opportunities to enter higher value-added areas of world trade are being lost. Unregistered industrial trawlers and ports at which illegal catches are unloaded are the economic equivalent of mining companies evading taxes and offshore tax havens.

Bikutsi is a musical genre from Cameroon. It developed from the traditional styles of the Beti, or Ewondo, people, who live around the city of Yaoundé. It was popular in the middle of the 20th century in West Africa. It is primarily dance music.
The word 'bikutsi' literally means 'beat the earth' or 'let's beat the earth' (bi- indicates a plural, -kut- means 'to beat' and -si means 'earth'.) The name indicates a dance that is accompanied by stomping the feet on the ground.
Bikutsi is characterized by an intense 6/8 rhythm, though it is occasionally 9/8 and its tempo is usually quarternote.[2] it is played at all sorts of Beti gatherings, including parties, funerals and weddings.
Beti gatherings fall into two major categories:
Ekang phase: the time when imaginary, mythological and spiritual issues are discussed
Bikutsi phase: when real-life issues are discussed
A double sided harp with calabash amplification called the mvet is used during these ceremonies, by Beti storytellers, who are viewed as using the mvet as an instrument of God to educate the people. The Ekang phase is intensely musical, and usually lasts all night. There are poetic recitations accompanied by clapping and dancing, with interludes for improvised and sometimes obscene performances on the balafon (a type of xylophone). These interludes signal the shift to the bikutsi phase, which is much less strictly structured than Ekang. During bikutsi, women dance and sing along with the balafon, and lyrics focus on relationships, sexuality and the lives of famous people. These female choruses are an integral part of bikutsi, and their intense dancing and screams are characteristic of the genre. Traditional bikutsi was often ironic in its content, as many modern bikutsi songs still are.
In its modern form, bikutsi is very popular, and rivals makossa as the country's most renowned style.
Popular bikutsi first appeared in the 1940s with the recording of Anne-Marie Nzie. Some twenty years later, the style was electrified with the addition of keyboards and guitars. The most popular performer of this period was Messi Me Nkonda Martin, frontman for Los Camaroes and known as "the father of modern bikutsi music".[1] In an effort to translate the sound and spirit of traditional bikutsi music to more modern terms, Messi incorporated the sound of a balafon into the electric guitar by linking together the guitar strings with lengths of cotton cord. Played in this way, the electric guitar sounded similar to the balafon. The music itself, then, was only slightly altered, while the image and outside perception of bikutsi music was changed enormously. Other bands during this time, such as Les Vétérans, were also popular.
International acclaim began in 1987 with the formation of Les Têtes Brûlées by Jean Marie Ahanda. The late guitarist of Les Têtes Brulées, Zanzibar, invented the trick of damping the strings of his guitar with a strip of foam rubber to produce the music's characteristic balafon-like thunk. (The balafon is a marimba-like instrument that is widely used in African folk music.) More modern performers include Jimmy Mvondo Mvelé and Mbarga Soukous.
Present-day bikutsi as performed by artists like Lady Ponce, K-Tino, Racine Sagath and Natascha Bizo is sometimes regarded as controversial. It has been criticized for the perceived sexual content of its lyrics and dancing style. In this respect bikutsi resembles mapouka from Côte d'Ivoire, which is also considered indecent by many Africans. The main difference is that present day bikutsi is still often performed by female artists who use it as a means of self-expression in a traditionally male-dominated society.
Thus a singer like K-Tino, self-styled femme du peuple (woman of the people) sees herself as having an important part to play in the emancipation and liberation of the women of Cameroon.
Among the current crop of artists are Patou Bass and Ovasho Bens, the promoter of a dance and philosophy called "zig zag". His first album is composed not only of Cameroonian traditional rhythms but also West Indian zouk and Jamaïcan-style reggae.
Bikutsi has influenced Western musicians such as Paul Simon on his 1990 album The Rhythm of the Saints.

We need Human Rights with teeth in our trade relations! The European Commission is close to finalising her free trade agreement with the West African countries. But the commission forgot that she wants to put human rights and sustainable development at the core of her trade policy. There is nothing in this agreement that makes human rights really enforceable. And we know from other trade agreements that the monitoring mechanisms do not work, as it is almost impossible to sanction against human rights violations.

West Africa has a long and complex history. Although much has been lost in the shadows and fogs of a time before people created written accounts, historians, like detectives, search for clues in language patterns, artifacts unearthed by archeologists, and oral accounts passed down from generation to generation.
Using this evidence, they can reconstruct areas of history that have been long forgotten. We're going to look at three aspects of West African history that will give us a taste of the richness of the culture found in this area of the world.
First, let's talk about the Bantu migrations. Bantu was an ancient language spoken by people who lived in what is now Cameroon and Nigeria in West Africa. These people were primarily farmers who lived in villages along rivers.
By about 1500 BCE, their crops, including newer foods like bananas, yams, and cereals, were flourishing, their population was expanding, and their lands were becoming a bit overcrowded. Some of them decided it was time to move on.
Over the next 2,000 years, the Bantu people moved slowly and gradually in two directions: south down the coast of Western Africa and east across the continent, with a turn to the South as they progressed. As they moved, the Bantu spread their agricultural practices, their language, and their culture.
Along the way, they developed iron tools and weapons that aided their spread and made their agricultural endeavors more efficient. The Bantu peoples did not move into empty lands. They often encountered resistance from those already living on their prospective new homelands.
The Bantu, however, had the advantage of iron weapons, as well as the force of movement that pushed native people off their land or assimilated them into the Bantu way of life.
By about 500 CE, the Bantu migrations were complete; the Bantu peoples occupied nearly all of Africa south of the Sahara Desert. Today, in fact, about 90 million people speak modern descendants of the Bantu languages, which include Swahili and Zulu.

From these 18, only 15 will advance to the Academy where they will be drilled and trained in the art of music for weeks.
The show runs for a total of 10 weeks, during which one contestant will be evicted every week for the duration of the show. One winner will emerge and win the star prize, while first and second runners up go home with consolation prizes.
Project Fame West Africa is sponsored by MTN Nigeria and produced by Ultima Studios.

For maverick entrepreneur Ian Cox, Africa is the last frontier of free enterprise. The former small-time hustler has been busting his ass on the continent for years, selling and moving merchandise. In 2012 he nabbed a lucrative United Nations contract to transport equipment from South Africa to South Sudan, a country on many countries' embargo list. The other problem: the journey north entails passing through countless checkpoints and dealing with bribe-happy officials and their nonsensical paperwork and regulations.
Photographer and filmmaker Tim Freccia followed around Ian and the guys he hired for this job. "Cowboy Capitalists" documents their attempts to navigate the continent's dangerous roads and bureaucratic chaos.
