Crime & Punishment in the Gaza Strip
We finally got a rare glimpse of the embattled Gaza Strip and a chance to see what life was like under the rule of Hamas. In 2007 we tried and failed to get into Gaza through the Israeli-controlled Erez Crossing. Back then the rival Palestinian factions of Hamas and Fatah were engaged in a bloody war for control of this tiny strip of land. Hamas won. When the post-Mubarak government of Egypt decid

The Debate - GAZA Strip Destruction (September 2nd)
The Gaza Strip could become uninhabitable for residents within just five years, the United Nations development agency has said. This sounds like a repeat after the 2008 war: 5 years earlier, and yet the world is standing idly by. The organizations that condemn, have failed to rally support against Israel, in which nearly a decade of its grueling blockade on Gaza, is responsible for the hardships.

Hamas won. When the post-Mubarak government of Egypt decided to start letting small numbers of folks into Gaza through their Rafah Crossing, we knew we could finally enter the region.

A Palestinian has been killed and dozens of others injured in the latest wave of violence in the occupied territories.
Protests are right now being held across the occupied West Bank over Israeli forces and settlers’ provocations in the al-Aqsa Mosque. A Palestinian youth was injured after an Israeli military vehicle ran over him in Beit El settlement near the city of Ramallah. Several protesters have also been arrested. Earlier, four stabbing attacks in the occupied territories left one Palestinian dead and six others injured. Several Israelis have also been wounded. The Palestinian Resistance Movement Hamas has called stabbing attacks against Israelis a new intifada or uprising.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

For years, the state of Israel and Palestine has been riddled with violence. But less than an hours drive from the heart of the conflict in Gaza, a Jewish-Arab community is working together for peace.
With a seemingly endless stream of rocket attacks, bombing campaigns and revenge killings, the state of Israel and Palestine can often seem devoid of any hope of reconciliation. In the village of Neve Shalom/What-al-Salam however, Arabs and Jews are working together to create a world separate from the world of violence and chaos that surrounds them. "We live the model where we share the land, the power and the everyday life and administration, and this is our message" says Evi, a village resident. Children from both communities come from miles around to share an education in peace and mutual understanding at the local school-the only one of its kind in Israel in its pioneering approach of teaching Arabic and Hebrew lessons alongside each other. Families live along side each other and as Nadine and Tali testify, children, who would otherwise most likely be enemies, become best friends: "we grew up together and for high school classmates it was difficult to understand that this is our reality whereas for them it’s the first encounter". But as Tali's father, Cobi insists, the village is not a Utopia: "it's not that we will all think alike, it’s not that we are all the same, we are different and the issue is how to coexist in spite of the differences." But still the village exists in peace. And the example it sets has sparked the imagination of their fellow compatriots and the waiting list to live in the village is long. With the influx of new inhabitants questions about the peace they all cherish arise: "does community come first, or do we have to step outside and try to change things even when we know there’s little chance of success?"

War Between Israel and Palestine - THE GAZA CONFLICT - Documentary Films
The Gaza-- Israel dispute belongs of the larger Israeli-- Palestinian problem.
Palestinian militant activities escalated in the Gaza Strip following the frustrating election to government of the Islamic political event Hamas in 2005 and 2006. The conflict escalated regarding the split of the Palestinian Authority to Fatah government in the West Bank and the Hamas Government in Gaza and the following violent ousting of Fatah. Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel and Israel's blockade of Gaza have actually exacerbated the dispute.
Under its 2005 disengagement strategy, Israel retained special control over Gaza's airspace and territorial waters, continued to patrol and monitor the external land boundary of the Gaza Strip, with the exemption of its southernmost perimeter (where Egypt retained command of the boundary and boundary crossings were supervised by European displays) and continued to keep track of and blockade Gaza's coastline. Israel largely offers for and controls Gaza's water supply, power and communications facilities.

Watch Part Two “Trouble in the Tunnel” - http://bit.ly/1AKYBiI
During the devastating 50-day war in Israel and Gaza this past summer, around 18,000 homes in Gaza were destroyed or severely damaged, leaving around 120,000 residents homeless.
Now, with trouble in neighboring Sinai and infighting between Palestinian factions, reconstruction efforts in the beleaguered Gaza Strip are moving slowly. With the UN warning of a growing humanitarian crisis for the people of Gaza, many fear that another armed conflict is imminent. Six months after the end of fighting, VICE News returns to the region to investigate the progress on reconstruction.
In part one, VICE News correspondent Danny Gold returns to Shija'iyya, the neighborhood that bore the brunt of last summer's fighting, and investigates how the closure of the Rafah crossing and demolition of the underground tunnels to Egypt has impacted Gaza's fragile economy.

"The Gaza Strip could become “uninhabitable” within five years, a United Nations report released Tuesday warns, as a result of Israeli military operations and a nearly decade-long blockade that have crippled its economy and infrastructure.
Gaza, a small territory that’s home to about 1.8 million Palestinians, had “no time for meaningful reconstruction or economic recovery” after eight years of a devastating Israeli economic blockade, wrote the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in its annual report. The agency, which has provided assistance to displaced Palestinians, also attributed the impoverished conditions to three successive Israeli military operations over the past six years."

In this edition of the debate, we’ll discuss why Israel is allowed to continue with its blockade which is making Gaza uninhabitable, unless that is the goal of the international community.

We begin in Gaza, where a 72-hour ceasefire that went into effect on Tuesday is holding.
Israel has withdrawn all of its ground forces... while delegates from both sides of the conflict are set to talk in Cairo,... hoping to hammer out a more permanent end to hostilities.
Connie Lee has more.
The gunfire has gone silent in the Gaza Strip... as a 72-hour ceasefire continues.
But the clock is ticking.
With the truce set to expire Friday morning,... Israeli and Palestinian officials have been sent to Cairo for talks,... with Egypt acting as mediator.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry speaking to the BBC urged both sides to negotiate a "two-state solution."
Meanwhile... in the Gaza Strip... the three-day ceasefire is a brief window of opportunity for residents to take in the devastation... stock up on supplies, and recover their dead.
"We found destruction everywhere-- a mosque, Koran books--decomposed children were found under the rubble after five days and public buildings that used to serve people are destroyed."
UNICEF, the children's body of the United Nations, says more than 400 Palestinian children have been killed since the beginning of the conflict.... with more than 140 schools damaged or destroyed in less than a month.
Along with the truce, Israel said it has withdrawn all of its ground forces... but according to a military spokesperson, the troops are still on the border, ready in defensive positions.
"We are taking a defensive stand. We are there in order to prevent further infiltration and further attacks from Gaza, originating from Gaza."
About a quarter of Gaza's population is now displaced, and more than 19-hundred Palestinians have been killed in the month-long conflict.

Israel, officially the State of Israel, is a country in Western Asia located on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Lebanon in the north, Syria in the northeast, Jordan in the east, and Egypt on the southwest, and contains geographically diverse features within its relatively small area. The West Bank and Gaza Strip are also adjacent. With a population of about 7.28 million, the majority of whom are Jews, Israel is the world's only Jewish state. It is also home to Arabs Muslims, Christians, Druze, and Samaritans, as well as other religious and ethnic minority groups.
The modern state of Israel has its roots in the Land of Israel (Eretz Yisrael), a concept central to Judaism for over 3000 years. After World War I, the League of Nations approved the British Mandate of Palestine with the intent of creating a "national home for the Jewish people." In 1947, the United Nations approved the partition of Palestine into two states, one Jewish and one Arab. On May 14, 1948 the state of Israel declared independence in accordance with the UN decision and this was followed by a war with the surrounding Arab states, which refused to accept the plan. The Israelis were subsequently victorious in a series of wars confirming their independence and expanding the borders of the Jewish state beyond those in the UN Partition Plan. Since then, Israel has been in conflict with many of the neighboring Arab countries, resulting in several major wars and decades of violence that continue to this day. Since its foundation, Israel's boundaries and even the State's very right to exist have been subject to dispute, especially among its Arab neighbors. However, Israel has signed peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan, and efforts are being made to reach a permanent accord with the Palestinians.
Israel is a representative democracy with a parliamentary system and universal suffrage. The Prime Minister serves as head of government and the Knesset serves as Israel's legislative body. In terms of nominal gross domestic product, the nation's economy is estimated as being the 44th-largest in the world. Israel ranks high among Middle Eastern countries on the bases of human development, freedom of the press, and economic competitiveness. Jerusalem is the country's capital, seat of government, and largest city, while Israel's main financial center is Tel Aviv.

The United States is prohibiting American carriers from flying to Israel's airport in Tel Aviv for 24 hours, because of rising violence between Israel and Hamas militants. The action was announced on Tuesday, after a rocket fired by Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip landed near the airport. As VOA's Carolyn Presutti tells us, international officials soon may have to determine which combat zones are too dangerous for commercial flights.
