How does a band return from a recording hiatus that could have permanently displaced it from the audience's eye? If you are Zach Condon and Beirut, you just go about your business and pick up where you left off three years earlier. The group's First Listen Live show at Brooklyn's intimate Bell House on a rainy September night, a concert debuting many of the songs from the brand new No No No, its first album since 2011, showed that Beirut works through its obstacles. Maybe it helps when the initial idea behind a band is ahead of the curve to begin with, no?
When Condon's Beirut first came to prominence in 2006, it emerged from Santa Fe with a fully conceived, pan-global folk sound unlike any indie sensibilities popular on the day. Zach's trumpet and flugelhorn playing was informed by local Mexican mariachi horns, his engagement with the Roma brass bands of the Balkans, and modal jazz changes via a percolating bossa nova; he favored timeless instruments (ukuleles, accordions) and images, to the rush of the modern; and the songs his quavering tenor delivered, also traveled the old continents. Live, the group grew into a formidable sextet, heavy on keyboards, horns and harmony, a world onto themselves.
At the Bell House, Beirut ran down its entire career before a sold-out audience, and the songs from No No No, the band's fourth studio, fit snuggly alongside the older material, even as it heralded directions new and familiar. "Perth," for instance, featured a touch of the Memphis soul energy, with Ben Lanz's trombone adding a brassy bump; "Fener," a song about a neighborhood in Istanbul, is built around the motorik beat interplay between Aaron Arntz's keyboards and Nick Petree's drums, before dropping down into a great g-funk slink, guided by Condon's Moog. So seemingly apart from Beirut's musical environment, yet, here they were, a natural part of it, making the audience sway endlessly. The hiatus, it seems, simply made full hearts grow fonder.

Beirut (Arabic: بيروت Bayrūt, Greek: Βηρυττός, Latin: Berytus, French: Beyrouth, Hebrew: ביירות Beyrut) is the capital and largest city of Lebanon. As there has been no recent population census, the exact population is unknown; estimates in 2007 ranged from slightly less than 1 million to slightly more than 2 million. Located on a peninsula at the midpoint of Lebanon's Mediterranean coast, it serves as the country's largest and main seaport. The Beirut metropolitan area consists of the city and its suburbs. The first mention of this metropolis is found in the ancient Egyptian Tell el Amarna letters, dating from the 15th century BC. The city has been inhabited continuously since then.
Beirut is Lebanon's seat of government and plays a central role in the Lebanese economy, with many banks and corporations based in its city centre, Hamra Street, Rue Verdun and Ashrafieh. The city is the focal point of the region's cultural life, renowned for its press, theatres, cultural activities and nightlife. After the destructive Lebanese Civil War, Beirut underwent major reconstruction, and the redesigned historic city centre, marina, pubs and nightlife districts have once again made it a tourist attraction. Beirut was named the top place to visit by The New York Times in 2009, and as one of the ten liveliest cities in the world by Lonely Planet in the same year.

How does a band return from a recording hiatus that could have permanently displaced it from the audience's eye? If you are Zach Condon and Beirut, you just go about your business and pick up where you left off three years earlier. The group's First Listen Live show at Brooklyn's intimate Bell House on a rainy September night, a concert debuting many of the songs from the brand new No No No, its first album since 2011, showed that Beirut works through its obstacles. Maybe it helps when the initial idea behind a band is ahead of the curve to begin with, no?
When Condon's Beirut first came to prominence in 2006, it emerged from Santa Fe with a fully conceived, pan-global folk sound unlike any indie sensibilities popular on the day. Zach's trumpet and flugelhorn playing was informed by local Mexican mariachi horns, his engagement with the Roma brass bands of the Balkans, and modal jazz changes via a percolating bossa nova; he favored timeless instruments (ukuleles, accordions) and images, to the rush of the modern; and the songs his quavering tenor delivered, also traveled the old continents. Live, the group grew into a formidable sextet, heavy on keyboards, horns and harmony, a world onto themselves.
At the Bell House, Beirut ran down its entire career before a sold-out audience, and the songs from No No No, the band's fourth studio, fit snuggly alongside the older material, even as it heralded directions new and familiar. "Perth," for instance, featured a touch of the Memphis soul energy, with Ben Lanz's trombone adding a brassy bump; "Fener," a song about a neighborhood in Istanbul, is built around the motorik beat interplay between Aaron Arntz's keyboards and Nick Petree's drums, before dropping down into a great g-funk slink, guided by Condon's Moog. So seemingly apart from Beirut's musical environment, yet, here they were, a natural part of it, making the audience sway endlessly. The hiatus, it seems, simply made full hearts grow fonder.

Filmed in June 2006, 2 weeks before the latest outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, Megan McCormick travels to Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. It is a city with a long history of political and social unrest, but retains an atmosphere of optimism and hope for the future.
Megan finds a warm welcome at her traveller’s hostel, before heading out in search of a decent falafel. After lunch Megan gets a briefing on the current political landscape and history of Lebanon from the editor of a national Lebanese newspaper. They visit a few of the city’s key areas, where fighting during the civil war took place, but keep a safe distance from the volatile southern suburbs.
The Beirut future rests with the young. After learning about the past and the present, Megan meets up with a group of young rap artists, eager to live in peace and move forward in the future.
Leaving the city, Megan takes a day trip to the fishing village of Byblos. She visits the souk, and finds an amazing collection of fossils. She decides to head in to the hills to uncover some of her own. In time, Megan travels back to Beirut via Jeita Grotto, a beautiful series of underground caves and lakes.
Again in Beirut, Megan tries to master the art of Belly Dancing with the legendary teacher Khanito. Megan finishes her trek with a trip to the beach, having discovered Beirut to be a welcoming city, providing her a fulfilling and fascinating journey.
To finish the episode, we take look back at Beirut 10 years ago, when Globe Trekker visited the city just after the civil war had ended. Merrilees Parker visited Tripoli, the Bekaa Valley and the ancient ruins at Baalbek, while Ian Wright took a trip down to Damascus.

There is the option to reach to Kurdistan by flying to Turkey: - Purchase a ticket to Diyarbakir (the nearest large city to the Turkish / Iraqi Kurdistan border). Upon arrival to the Diyarbakir airport, you will need to take a taxi to the border (Ibrahim Khalil / Habur). Once you have crossed the Turkish border into Iraqi Kurdistan (Ibrahim Khalil/Habur), you will be greeted by the Kurdish customs officials who will issue you a visa and further information on your destination.

Kalar, is the administrative center of Garmyan district. It lies 140 Km southeast of Sulaimani prefecture and 30 Km from the Iranian border. Kalar consists of 27 quarters of a population of about 250,000 residents. Kalar is located on a large plain area embracing many historical sites related to different periods; BC, AD, and Islamic periods. Shirwana Citadel, Pasha Citadel and Christian Canal are examples of AD historical sites. In winter, temperatures may reach 2˚C.

Getting There: Iraqi Kurdistan has two international airports, Erbil and Sulaimany. Currently there are direct international flights from Kurdistan to Dubai, Amman, Beirut and Frankfort.
There is the option to reach to Kurdistan by flying to Turkey: - Purchase a ticket to Diyarbakir (the nearest large city to the Turkish / Iraqi Kurdistan border). Upon arrival to the Diyarbakir airport, you will need to take a taxi to the border (Ibrahim Khalil / Habur). Once you have crossed the Turkish border into Iraqi Kurdistan (Ibrahim Khalil/Habur), you will be greeted by the Kurdish customs officials who will issue you a visa and further information on your destination.
Getting Around Iraqi Kurdistan: Taxi, Bus, and Private Car Hire. If you are mainly interested in staying in a city, taxi is reliable and good value for money. An average charge within a city drive is 2 dollers, as for the Bus it is definitely cheaper. To hire a car with or without driver could be the option for you. You can have your own chauffeur at your disposal throughout your stay. This will offer you the choice to travel short or long distances. A local driver has the knowledge and will advise you throughout your visit.

Each evening, the famous cliff jumpers of Acapulco congregate when, from a height of 42 metres, they jump fearlessly from the top of the La Quebrada Cliff into the narrow bay below. In the legendary ruins of Palenque, numerous monuments of the Maya culture can be found such as a palace, and several pyramids and temples. From the air, there is a unique view of the lush growth of the impenetrable forests around Palenque, and of Mexico’s most beautiful waterfalls of Agua Azul. Chichen Itza is thought to have been built by the Mayas around 450 AD and over 500 years later the fighting TOLTEKEN took over the deserted city, which led to two hundred years of prosperity. Located in the north, Tequila is situated at the foot of the likewise named volcano and is world famous because it is here that the Mexican national drink is produced. Combroux und seine Team treffen Beiruter Frauen mit unterschiedlichstem Hintergrund: Freiberuflerinnen, Angestellte, Hausfrauen, Intellektuelle und vor allem junge Mädchen. Die Gespräche mit ihnen zeigen, trotz der vielen, unterschiedlichen Religionsgruppen, die Rollenmuster fast in der gesamten Gesellschaft gleich sind.
Die Libanesinnen gelten als die schönsten Frauen des Orients. Beirut, die libanesische Hauptstadt, gilt als das mondänste Pflaster der arabischen Welt. Dabei ist es alles andere als eben; doch die Libanesinnen beherrschen die Kunst, über jedem Boden und durch jede Alltagssituation auf schwindelerregenden Absätzen zu balancieren. Perfektes Aussehen, perfektes Styling, keine Falten, keine großen Nasen, keine dünnen Lippen, das sind die Gesetze, an denen ab dem Mittelstand in der Beiruter Gesellschaft kaum eine Frau vorbeikommt.

"In der libanesischen Gesellschaft zählt der schöne Schein", konstatiert gleich zu beginnt des Films eine Architektin, "selbst während des Krieges waren die einzigen Läden, die durchgehend vollen Betrieb hatten, die Friseursalons." Noch immer sind der Bürgerkrieg und die Grüne Linie, an der sich 15 Jahre lang Christen und Moslems in Beirut bekämpften, das gemeinsame Trauma der libanesischen Gesellschaft. Il Libano, che diede anticamente i natali al gran popolo dei Fenici, navigatori e inventori del moderno alfabeto è ancora oggi un mondo da scoprire. Beirut, che ne è la capitale, dopo millenni di cultura si sposa con le evidenti contraddizioni di benessere e di modernità. Nonostante una guerra civile terminata solo venticinque anni fa, questo paese si caratterizza per la sua enorme vivibilità. Feconda di nuovi spunti culturali e di architetture avanguardistiche Beirut è tutto ciò che non ti aspetti. Gli italiani, storici amici dei libanesi, aiutano da sempre questo paese, dalla ricostruzione al monitoraggio dell’inquinamento, alle dolorose manifestazioni della guerra in Siria. Beirut, città in fermento, divisa fra le contraddizioni di un popolo con una forte identità e il dolore causato da eventi che sono ancora al di fuori della portata di ognuno di noi.
