Jack Doyle (31 August 1913 in Cobh, Ireland - 13 December 1978 in Paddington, London), known as "The Gorgeous Gael" was at one time or another a contender for the British Boxing Championship, a Hollywood actor and an accomplished tenor.
He was born into a working class family in Cobh, in County Cork, Ireland in 1913. At 6 foot 3 Doyle was always good with his fists and in 1929 he joined the forces of the Irish Guards based in Wales.
There he quickly excelled at boxing and was famed for his strong hooks that won him the British Army Championship. A sensational record of 28 straight victories, 27 by knockout, brought him to the attention of promoter Dan Sullivan. He turned pro and notched up 10 victories on the trot all inside 2 rounds, making him the hottest thing in the sport.
In July 1933, at the age of 19 he missed out on the British Heavyweight title to the holder, Welshman, Jack Petersen. Witnesses claim that he had done most of his warming up in a pub not far from the bout. Within the opening seconds he knew he was in trouble and decided to take the easy way out. He was disqualified for repeatedly punching low.
Sollie Paul Williams (August 23, 1917 – October 11, 1985), known professionally as Tex Williams, was an American Western swing musician from Ramsey, Illinois.
He is best known for his talking blues style; his biggest hit was the novelty song, "Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette)", which held the number one position on the Billboard charts for six weeks in 1947. "Smoke" was the No. 5 song on Billboard's Top 100 list for 1947, and was No. 1 on the country chart that year. It can be heard during the opening scenes of the 2006 movie, Thank You for Smoking.
Williams' backing band, the Western Caravan, numbered about a dozen members. They attained an enviable level of fluid interplay between electric and steel guitars, fiddles, bass, accordion, trumpet, and other instruments (even an occasional harp). At first they recorded polkas for Capitol Records with limited success. That was changed by the success of "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke" written in large part by Merle Travis.
In April 1956 Williams appeared on the Chrysler sponsored CBS TV broadcast "Shower of Stars".
Carrie Amelia Moore Nation (November 25, 1846 – June 9, 1911) was a radical member of the temperance movement, which opposed alcohol in pre-Prohibition America. She is particularly noteworthy for promoting her viewpoint through vandalism. On many occasions Nation would enter an alcohol-serving establishment and attack the bar with a hatchet. She has been the topic of numerous books, articles and even an opera.
Nation was a large woman, almost 6 feet (180 cm) tall and weighing 175 pounds (79 kg) and of a somewhat stern countenance. She described herself as "a bulldog running along at the feet of Jesus, barking at what He doesn't like," and claimed a divine ordination to promote temperance by destroying bars.
The spelling of her first name is ambiguous and both Carrie and Carry are considered correct. Official records say Carrie, which Nation used most of her life; the name Carry was used by her father in the family Bible. Upon beginning her campaign against liquor in the early 20th century, she adopted the name Carry A. Nation mainly for its value as a slogan, and had it registered as a trademark in the state of Kansas.
The Rank Strangers were an Australian bluegrass band that won multiple national and international awards during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Random House’s 1991 book Australian Country Music declared the Rank Strangers to be among the major figures of the 1990s Australian music scene, along with Keith Urban and country legend Slim Dusty. Australian Country Music observed that "the Rank Strangers have a musical immediacy that typifies the best of bluegrass and recalls such players as The Stanley Brothers and Bill Monroe."
Other occasional members included Belinda Moody on bass, Ian Tritt on mandolin, Di McNicholl on guitar and vocals, and other Australian and American instrumentalists.
The bulk of their record albums consisted of original material, although they also included time-honoured bluegrass standards in their repertoire. Following the band’s break-up in the early 1990s, Somerville and Hale went on to lead bands of their own, while Forrester embarked on a career as a writer. (See, e.g., Houseboating in the Ozarks, Dufour Editions, 2006, which includes a fictionalized account of the Rank Strangers.)
I've got my favourite pair of creps on
The ones with golden samaris sewn on
Each step is skipped when they are thrown on
Feet are swift so I bowl on
I got my favourite army dog tag
The one I got one day with my Dad
We watched the planes loop and the clouds sag
The sky was filled with smoke drag
Of course i know that these are all for show
To decorate my limbs and let me know
That through these things a constant love will flow
With them we are not on our own
I've got my favourite Westwood coat on
The one from Alice who I dote on
I am a pirate and I float on
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Of course i know that these are all for show
To decorate my limbs and let me know
That through these things a constant love will flow
With them were are not on our own
Got my favourite
Got my favourite
Got my favourite
Got my favourite
Got my favourite
I got my favourite gold signet ring
The one that gives me power to sing
From my mum who I owe all things
Love forevers written within
Of course we know that these are all for show
To decorate my limbs and let us know
That through these things a constant love will flow
With them we are not on our own
Got my favourite
Got my favourite
Got my favourite
Got my favourite
On city streets you need to
Be careful who you speak to
Or look at or touch
As that’s enough
To get you in too deep
Oh what a laugh to hurt one
Humiliate and merc one
A country in need
Where bloods don’t bleed
What are you going to do?
Victorian, Georgian, Roman or Norman
Before the Gregorian, violence breeds
Don’t matter what era, there’s always a fear there
Hop’s to make beer there, that’s all you need
It’s bait to be fateful but nasty and hateful
People aren’t grateful, they sow the seed
Into their offspring, most likely costing
Kids to be fostering idea’s that lead to
Fighting, biting
Run for your lives
Shanking, skanking
Run for you lives
Hitting, Spitting
Run for your lives
It’ll never change
It’ll never change
It’ll never change
It’ll never change
It’ll never change
Run for your lives
Run for your lives
Get your head down when hoods up
Don’t you look sharp or fix up
If weapons are words then don’t be heard
Silence equals peace
Victorian, Georgian, Roman or Norman
Before the Gregorian, violence breeds
Don’t matter what era, there’s always a fear there
Hop’s to make beer there, that’s all you need
It’s bait to be fateful but nasty and hateful
People aren’t grateful, they sow the seed
Into their offspring, most likely costing
Kids to be fostering idea’s that lead to
Fighting, biting
Run for your lives
Shanking, skanking
Run for you lives
Hitting, Spitting
Run for your lives
It’ll never change
It’ll never change
We will never change
We will never change
It’ll never change
Run for your lives
Run for your lives
Run for your lives
Boy in love, I wish that I was Meaulnes
Look above and watch your window glow
Feed the past even though I'm grown
Love can last, it never truly goes
So I sit and I wait, still I can't navigate to your castle
Home in a forest, overgrown
So I sit and I wait, still I can't navigate to your castle
Home in a forest, overgrown
My Yvonne, my Yvonne
My Yvonne, my Yvonne
My Yvonne
Through the years
We lost each other's souls
Through the years
So much to be resolved
So I sit and I wait, still I can't navigate to your castle
Home in a forest, overgrown
So I sit and I wait, still I can't navigate to your castle
Home in a forest, overgrown
My Yvonne, my Yvonne
My Yvonne, my Yvonne
The small divides along the sides of rulers always amazed me
Closer you look the more it took your eyes off reality
It's very rare that I don't stare at objects to find beauty
Hope I don't seem to talk pompously, try and look abstactly
If you don't see we're all made of codes
Deciphering is the game we're all in
If you don't see we're all made of codes
Deciphering is the game we're all in
The New York sky is cut by lines of metal tubes protruding
When one's within it gets quite dim as you're just one included
Look between the glossy sheen and the shapes emerging
Heaven laughs while breaking past tiny cracks that's serging
If you don't see we're all made of codes
Deciphering is the game we're all in
If you don't see we're all made of codes
Deciphering is the game we're all in
The different lands are trapped in hands of rulers making us think
The worlds not ours, these ancient scars do not show anything, but
This is trite, it is our right to do that's all we possess
No one owns what natures grown, this truth they must confess
It's a constant cycle so hurry
Do all you can before you're buried
Powers try to hide and ferry us through time
Ferry us through life
Ferry us through life
If you don't see we're all made of codes
Deciphering is the game we're all in
If you don't see we're all made of codes
When things have been said so many times
You repeat back as if your learning lines
It’s so easy to fall into this trap
Cos once you get there, you can’t get back
As I get older I wonder what I’ll do
When I make my own choices and they say its up to you
Cos right now I’m feeling safe its all the same
But in a few years if I’m nowhere its me to blame
Picture frame, books and shelves, not afraid by myself
Metal strings, glowing tubes, Bessie Smith, sings the blues
Key and lock, dirty clothes, misunderstood poets prose
Dreaming with open minds, repeating back, learning lines
Learing lines, learning lines, learning lines
People around seem to have their heads screwed on
But dreaming’s become my life I’m finding it hard to move on
It’d be so easy if I wanted to charter survey
Knowing my future down to a year or a day
Picture frame, books and shelves, not afraid by myself
Metal strings, glowing tubes, Bessie Smith, sings the blues
Key and lock, dirty clothes, misunderstood poets prose
Dreaming with open minds, repeating back, learning lines
We made amends but nothings mended
As what I gave can not be mended
I led you on but leadings wrong
I made a meal of it and stumbled
We both knew that my cookie crumbled
I led you on but leadings wrong
A kiss is just a kiss
I think that's what fools say
But that is what this is
Have I been a fool? Just say, say, say
Have I been a fool? Just say
Have I been a fool? Just say
Have I been a fool? Just say
You made a mountain of a molehill
Well that's what I will tell myself still
I led you on and leadings wrong
I made a meal of it and stumbled
We both knew that my cookie crumbled
I led you on but leading's wrong
A kiss is just a kiss
I think that's what fools say
But that is what this is
Have I been a fool? Just say, say, say
Have I been a fool? Just say
Have I been a fool? Just say, say, say
Have I been a fool? Just say
I've been told I'm cruel
Due to what I do
I've been told I'm cruel
To you
Have I been a fool? Just say, say, say
Have I been a fool? Just say
Have I been a fool? Just say, say, say
Have I been a fool? Just say
When we die, when we die
When we die, when we die
Will our bones be left in strange lands
And our grave be dug by cold hands
When we die, when we die
When we die, when we die
Will their tears wash the church away
And their cries smash the stain glass panes
When we die, when we die
Or will it be another lonely morning for the preist
No dearly beloved gathered for the deceased
When we die, when we die
Will you cry, will you cry
Will you tie ribbons round blue flowers
Then you place them to be devoured
By the sky, when we die
When I die, when I die
Or will it be another lonely morning for the preist
No dearly beloved gathered for the deceased
When we die, when we die
When I die, when I die
When I die, when I die
So small, oh so small are we
By we I mean all humanity
Endless universe out in front of me
Some say earth’s a tiny obscurity
Maybe in size, but if your wise
And close your eyes
Lose all you’re guise
Part of the deal
Is do not conceal
That we can feel
This is all real
The stars can’t feel a lovers touch
The kiss that makes your body rush
Embrace your sleeping sweetheart with hush
And the words I love you mean so much
Above in the sky
Diamond lights fly
Makes us think why
We’re here then we die
Questions are asked
But Answers don’t last
We look to the past
For comfort so Fast
The stars can’t feel a lovers touch
The kiss that makes your body rush
Embrace your sleeping sweetheart with hush
And the words I love you mean so much
I can wish upon a star but wouldn’t wish to be that far
I can wish upon a star but wouldn’t wish to be that far
I can wish upon a star but wouldn’t wish to be that far
I can wish upon a star but wouldn’t wish to be that far
I can wish upon a star but wouldn’t wish to be that far
When times passed so long
When the world has gone
There won’t be this song
But that isn’t wrong
Love will be here
In atoms of tears
Kisses and fears
Live on all years
The stars can’t feel a lovers touch
The kiss that makes your body rush
Embrace your sleeping sweetheart with hush
And the words I love you mean so much
I can wish upon a star but wouldn’t wish to be that far
I can wish upon a star but wouldn’t wish to be that far
I can wish upon a star but wouldn’t wish to be that far
I can wish upon a star but wouldn’t wish to be that far
I can wish upon a star but wouldn’t wish to be that far
Once more just before Im leaving
Torn on the platform
Once more just before Im leaving
Torn on the platform
Cos Ill miss you and I love you
I know this is over just for mow
Cos I miss you, ohh, how I miss you
Youre not my girl you're my town
A weekend away, leave the city today
Dont want the big smoke to leave me behind
The train leaves at 2, platform 3 Waterloo
50 p to the tramp makes me feel kind
I get a good seat , with a window my feet
Are up on the one in front everyone stares
Why do they care, like theres feelings in chairs
Trapped for 3 hours until I get there
Cos my
Eyes, eyes, eyes
Are not
Dry, dry, dry
As I
Realise, ise, ise
That in a few minutes this train will be gone
Sighs, sighs, sighs
City
Fly's, fly's, fly's
Wonder
Why, why, why
Would anyone want to leave where I come from?
Torn on the platform
Torn on the platform
Torn on the platform
It's 1.58 wish that I had been late
And missed the train and given them an excuse
But what is the use, I've less slack than a noose
Do or die stay or go what shall I choose
Cos my
Eyes, eyes, eyes
Are not
Dry, dry, dry
As I
Realise, ise, ise
That in a few minutes this train will be gone
Sighs, sighs, sighs
City
Fly's, fly's, fly's
Wonder
Why, why, why
Would anyone want to leave where I come from?
Torn on the platform
Torn on the platform
Torn on the platform
Like in a film the motion starts to slow
As the beeping carriage doors begin to close
Momenterily I'm standing froze
Then I jump between the gap
Land on the platform flat
I'm not
Torn on the platform
Torn on the platform
Living with no reason, dwarfed, alone, imprisoned;
Wonder why I'm here at all?
Why I'm even trying, destined to be filing;
The higher you reach the harder you fall.
And then you say:
We're all the same, all got our dreams
Loose at the seams.
'Cause we all spit at stars,
We all spit at stars,
We all spit at stars.
Unifying fact, however we act when we feel
We've not made our true goal.
Something we can see, but not reach or be
Can leave you dead in a hole.
Dreams are the same; we're all the same,
All got our dreams loose at their seams
'Cause we all spit at stars,
We all spit at stars,
We all spit at stars.
You don't get what you don't deserve.
Don't expect the world with know what, that's absurd.
Learn to spit up towards the stars,
'Cause who knows soon, your spit will land on Mars.
And then you'll say:
We're all the same, all got our dreams
Loose at their seams.
'Cause we all spit at stars,
We all spit at stars,
Seperated, and negated,it seems fated,we have to find out more.
do you want me?tell me properly,or just stop me its you that i adore.
i can't wait for another second minute or hour
i can't wait it's all your choice it's in your power
i can't wait for another second minute or hour
i can't wait it's all your choice it's in your power.
i lost my head when i found my heart
but now with neither i've fallen all apart
with this voice and chord i'll tell you from the start
she never wanted me,she never wanted me.
i act stupid,due to cupid,my love's rooted,you'll have to dig down deep,
mixed emotion, fixed devotion, your magic potion you sprinkle as i sleep.
i can't wait for another second minute or hour
i can't wait it's all your choice it's in your power
i can't wait for another second minute or hour
i can't wait it's all your choice it's in your power.
i lost my head when i found my heart
but now with neither i've fallen all apart
with this voice and chord i'll tell you from the start
she never wanted me,she never wanted me,she never wanted me.
with you i can't imagine being alone
without you i can see how much i've grown
coz you made me what i am today
have you gave me all that i can take
i lost my head when i found my heart
but now with neither i've fallen all apart
with this voice and chord i'll tell you from the start
And on this casket's back sits a little lonely ghost. He
misses his old lungs and wishes he had his throat, those
good old days! Daylight will wash away. It's going to
fade, yeah it will fade, and the darkness will take it's
place. It's going to come, yeah it will come, so I'm
grateful for this consciousness oasis that paints the
darkest carpet with a sudden streak of white. We burn so
bright!
I will swallow it whole, I'm going to run, yeah I will
run until my body breaks down. I'm filling up, yeah fill
me up. Fill me up!
Don't look back: you'll turn to salt. So just march on,
let moments melt.
I'm awake. Wake up! Wake UP! I'm awake, I'm AWAKE! And
I'll never piss that away. Let's be loud, let's love,
What a game we play in this arena.
It's called:
"haul your ass, or you'll be eaten."
Fill your mouth, don't be shy, have a bite now.
He wasn't fast enough, so he's in the dark now.
That's the way it will be
in the land of the free.
And the man in the moon (made of dust)
laughs at us!
No! Don't laugh at us!
I'll keep me calm with a slew of convictions.
Nothing sings like a good distraction.
I wish my head was a page in a printer:
trash bad thoughts with the click of a finger.
With the crack of a gun
and the snap of a bone
we will fall to our knees,
and we're gone, and we won't come back.
NOW, I'm alive!
And my soul is on fire.
And I breathe, and I love,
and I sing, and you can't stop me!
No! No, you can't stop me!
Chorus:
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I knew it all along
I knew it
From the very start
I felt it in my heart
(If there's even
One to feel)
I bought you a gift
It's a picture frame
For my face
When you decide
To place me in the past
Because nothing lasts
Yeah
Nothing lasts
No nothing lasts
(Chorus 2x)
You're taking off
Your clothes
I hear echoes
Of her breathing
But she is fading
Into the past
At last
At long last
At long last
(Chorus)
Let me be
Let me alone
Water me
My memories
Are wilting
(Chorus)
(If there's even
I guess you're done. You're doomed. You can stop licking
your wounds. You're just recycled ash. You're just going
back
But the strong will survive! The poets will cry, but not
I. Not I.
The planets move, and all is right!
Draw the giant's outline in chalk next to the bloody
slingshot's rock, and we'll bury him along with your
statistics.
And the weak will comply, leak, and resign with still
eyes. Still eyes.
So you thought you had your mind glassed up in a jar?
Clear and cut and dry but dipped a bit in tar. And you’re
hoping for a troll to rob you of your gold and burn your
lovely home and keep you from the starlight. Current in
your hands and a trembling in your back; doubt your
hopeful can, and crystallize to lack. And the sun will
