The Portuguese are among Europe's most ancient Portuguese genes along with the Basques and Galicians come directly from pre-history blends with virtually no other people.
It's totally ridiculous the story of the Portuguese were a "mixture" of people, maybe a bit of history knows that the colonization of the Arabs was made from the political and military elites, like the Roman. that is, there was never even many Romans not many Arabs in Portugal and then to the "mix" was insignificant.
And besides that Portugal was created in 1143, almost 900 years ago, is the European country with the oldest definite boundaries, so was the first to close borders to influence other people as opposed to only Spaniards expel the Arabs in 1492 .
Most Portuguese are of Celtic origin because the Celts are the original inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula, all archaeological sites and link to it directly to a succession of people, from builders and menhirs Cromlechs (Megalithism) from there 8000 years ago, the Tartessos who were the direct ancestors of the Celts.
The Celts then came here and then emigrated to northern Europe. The Celts were originally brown, short, dark hair and brown eyes, and yet had absolutely nothing to do with peoples of North Africa, as demonstrated by the investigation of the DNA of the Portuguese.
Also, how can the Portuguese be Moors, if the Moors were Muslims and the Portuguese Catholics?
It was an outrage that a Portuguese had a relationship with a Muslim, was just a trip to the gallows. Therefore, no interbreeding.
As for race, the Portuguese are white (Caucasian), having a majority of these characteristics: black hair, dark brown, brown eyes, men - 1.70m, 1.80m tall women - 1.60m, 1.75m. These are the main features in most of the Portuguese, HOWEVER, there are also many with blond hair, red hair and blue eyes, green.
Also, do not use the term hispanic, your family is PORTUGUESE/LUSITANIC, therefore european. For another mysterious reason many americans seem to think the spaniards or portuguese can be named "latinos" like they were some kind of separate race from the other europeans. They are not, Europe is a multicultural entity, there are europeans blond with blue eyes and dark skinned with brown eyes, they're all european, only ones are northern european and others southern european.
So be very proud of your portuguese origins.

What's up! This is Ken! I'm from Japan!
I have been backpacking over Europe since October 1st (Portugal⇨Spain⇨France⇨Luxembourg⇨Belgium⇨Netherland⇨Germany⇨Poland⇨⇨⇨more)
Don't worry! The title is just a joke to take people's eyes!
I hardly ever hit on girls (i'm not just chicken though)
But seriously Portuguese people are super friendly and easygoing! I love them! I love this country! Try to say 'Hola~!' if you visit Portugal!
If Japan were closer to Portugal, I could come here every weekend. I wish I could live in Portugal.
As I mentioned at the end of the video, please follow my Twitter if you want to know me more! I'm reporting what's happening around me and what I'm thinking about during the trip.

The History of Portugal by WanderTooth. We spent about 2 months in Portugal and found the stories of its history fascinating. From the first settlers, the Romans, the Moors, all the battles won and lost, Kings, Queens and other nobility and eras of dominance followed by eras of oppression. All of this has shaped the Portuguese people, from the food they eat, to the songs they sing, to they way they interact with others and so on. A visit is highly recommended and there is something for everyone. Landscapes, castles, Roman ruins, Port wine tasting, Fado music, beaches, and more. And being a relatively small country, everything is easily within reach! GO! ENJOY!

A visit is highly recommended and there is something for everyone. Landscapes, castles, Roman ruins, Port wine tasting, Fado music, beaches, and more. And being a relatively small country, everything is easily within reach! GO! ENJOY!

Cristiano Ronaldo demands a crowd to stop laughing at a young Japanese boy while he is trying to interview the Ballon d'Or winner in Portuguese.
During an interview at a promotional event in Japan Ronaldo found himself being questioned by a young Japanese boy who was attempting to speak to the star in Portuguese.
The boy's Portuguese is stuttered and unsurprisingly not up to scratch, which is met by the sound of giggles from around the room.
At this point Ronaldo becomes visibly irked by the behaviour of the crowd and turns to his translator to say.
Why they smile? He speaks good Portuguese! They should be happy, because he tries very hard!"

Portugal's silent revolt and desertion of the young

People in Portugal started casting their ballots on Sunday in the first general election following the country's exit from an international bailout program in May last year.
Polling stations opened at 8 a.m. local time (0700 GMT), and preliminary results are expected around 8 p.m.(1900 GMT).
The 9.6 million eligible voters will choose between the center-right ruling coalition, led by Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho, and the main opposition socialist party headed by Secretary-General Antonio Costa.
The Portuguese prime minister voted on Sunday in Massama, around 16 km from Lisbon, and called for people not to abstain.
The leader of the Social Democrat Party said Sunday was a "day of hope" and that the next four years would be very different to the past four years.
Portugal signed a 78-billion-euro bailout deal in 2011 with international lenders and has been implementing tough austerity measures to reach deficit targets.
"I think that ... [we] don't need a change; what we need is [to] continue some measures to maintain the stability for the country," said Carlos, a voter.
Isabel, another voter, expressed concern about the cost of living, taxes and employment. "We have a lot of taxes. And, the life is expensive in Portugal. ... Whichever the government that comes, I hope that we [don't] have more taxes and we can have more employees in Portugal," she said.
Sixteen political forces, comprising three coalitions and 13 parties, are contesting this year's election.
Election opinion polls have shown that the ruling center-right coalition has a good chance of winning but is unlikely to secure a parliamentary majority.

Back in 2008 I had the chance to do a project in my hometown of Cascais, a 650 years old village near Lisbon. I really wanted to do something that would define its history and that would also identify myself as a Portuguese.
At that time I was working as a freelance illustrator (as I am still today) so I thought I could use my weird illustration universe, forming a Portuguese tile pattern. Visually, the result turned out really good so I felt this was something I needed to explore.
I think that nowadays it’s important for us, as citizens of a fast pacing and technological advanced world, to think about what our traditions mean to us and how can they can be preserved. Growing up in Portugal I’ve seen these tile panels all my life, inside and outside the buildings.

STORYLINE:
Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of the Portuguese capital Lisbon on Saturday to protest against the austerity measures announced by the government.
The protest was organised by the main trade union confederation, CGTP (General Confederation of the Portuguese Workers).
Leader Armenio Carlos said they were fighting against austerity policies and the "unlimited sacrifices that they are putting on the Portuguese people, and the disgrace (bad things) that it brings to the Portuguese people."
Workers, students, retired people and police officers took part in the demonstration that ended in "Praca de Comercio" Square.
Off duty police officers shouting "We are with the people" marched through the streets, as well as other members of the security forces.
"We know the limit between our work when we are in service (working) and our response when we are fighting against policies we don't agree with," said police officers union spokesperson, Paulo Rodrigues.
"To be police officers does not mean we are not going to fight for our rights."
Retired banker Joaquim Cruz, 71, said it was the first time he had taken part in a protest, but it was also the first time he had felt there was a crisis in his country.
"It's the first time I come to a protest, but I have such a anger that I feel obligated to join the people. And this is a way to rise our voice so they (government) can listen," he said.
Portugal is locked into a programme of budget cuts in return for last year's 78 (b) billion euro 101 (b) billion US dollar) bailout.
The government has announced new measures in return for the money that the European Central Bank, European Commission and International Monetary Found gave the country to avoid the bankruptcy.

People on the streets on Lisbon expressed uncertainty over the future of Portugal on Friday after their government submitted a formal request for a financial bailout to the European Commission.
Portugal submitted a formal request for help on Thursday evening, officially kicking off negotiations for a bailout that had been anticipated for months.
Finance Minister Fernando Teixeira dos Santos now has to convince his 16 eurozone counterparts that Lisbon has the authority to implement structural reforms and budget cuts designed to get the country's public finances back into shape.
The front pages on Portuguese newspapers on Friday painted a grim picture of times to come.
"Five years of austerity with more taxes and less social protection," was the headline of the Diario de Noticias daily, while Correio de Manha revealed that there had been an "order to fire in the public sector".
In Ribiera Market in Lisbon people were pessimistic about their country's finances.
"Things may get better now but we'll have to pay for it," said 57 year old Afra Maia.
72 year old vegetable seller Maria Alice voiced her confusion about the situation.
"I don't really understand what is happening, I don't know... people don't have money and there's no jobs," she said.
European finance ministers will wrangle over the size and terms of a rescue loan for Portugal in their two-day meeting in Hungary which started on Friday, however uncertainty over how much the caretaker government in Lisbon can offer in return made an imminent deal unlikely.
Teixeira dos Santos, who together will the rest of the government is only acting as a caretaker until elections in June, has indicated how difficult it may be to reach at a deal, since opposition parties will have to be involved in negotiations.
The Portuguese government resigned late last month after opposition parties rejected new tax hikes and spending cuts that had been worked out together with the European Commission, the EU's executive, and the European Central Bank.
That package of reforms - also sanctioned by other eurozone governments - will now form the basis of discussions for any bailout program.

Churchgoers on Sunday rose earlier than normal to attend a service before casting their ballots in Portugal's general election. Most agreed change is what the embattled country needs.
Portuguese voters elect a new government on Sunday amid a steep decline in living standards as the deeply indebted country enacts painful austerity measures in return for a 78 (b) billion Euros (114 (b) billion US Dollars) international bailout.
"We have to vote for someone, we need a change, we can't quit and keep the same person there," said 50-year old Justino Rios.
"We have to vote for someone different and see and if things don't change we then stop voting," he added.
Conceicao Miranda, 65, says she feels anxious because she has two daughters in their late 30's struggling to keep jobs and provide for their children. Plus she says she feels unsafe walking the streets of the town she has known for decades.
"This has to change and I want to give strength to the person I'm voting for so they can lift this up because this is horrible, it's chaos," she said before heading into church. After the service, Miranda walked next door to a local school, voter card in hand, to cast her ballot.
As in Greece and Ireland - other eurozone countries that required financial rescue to avoid imminent bankruptcy - the ballot is forecast to unseat the government and bring the main opposition party to power.
Though all the main parties have given their blessing to further pay cuts and tax hikes aimed at restoring Portugal's financial health, any signs the country is straying from debt-reduction targets would place more strain on Europe's efforts to draw a line under a debt crisis that has dragged on for more than a year.
The election, the second in two years, comes after opposition parties rejected the outgoing Socialist government's austerity policies three months ago, prompting the resignation of Prime Minister Jose Socrates' administration and an unscheduled ballot.
Opinion polls indicated the centre-right Social Democratic Party would collect around 36 percent of the vote and the centre-left Socialist Party, which has governed over the past six years of economic decline, about 31 percent.
That result would leave the Social Democrats short of an absolute majority in the 230-seat Parliament, potentially enabling opposition parties to group together and defeat their plans.
Analysts expect the Social Democrats to invite the smaller, conservative Popular Party - forecast to gather about 12 percent - to join a coalition government if they need to bolster their parliamentary majority.

As East Timorese Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri held a news conference on Sunday, calling for calm in the streets of Dili, assailants burned at least half a dozen buildings near the airport of East Timor's capital and terrified residents pleaded for a permanent police presence in their conflict-torn neighbourhoods.
Alkatiri told news media the only way his state would have peace, was for his people to respect the law, and avoid violence.
"Now a claim for national unity? What kind of national unity is this?" he asked, referring to the recent outbreaks of violence.
Alkatiri had firm words for anyone questioning his ability.
"If they are trying to ask us, to recognise that we are not able to govern the country, then they will never do that, because we are able to govern the country," Alkatiri said.
Also on Sunday, about 120 Portuguese military police arrived as part of an international build-up of forces, to much jubilation from Dili residents who greeted them with flowers and cheers.
The forces belong to the Republican National Guard, a unit that previously served in East Timor under UN authority.
Violence has dwindled since foreign soldiers arrived in East Timor more than a week ago to restore order amid fighting that killed at least 30 people.
But the latest attacks exposed the limits on what the two thousand troops from Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia can do to curb the unrest.
Peacekeepers have confiscated hundreds of weapons, and have temporarily detained gang members, yet have refrained from firing their weapons and have often driven by scenes of looting or vandalism.
Violence first erupted on April 28 when a demonstration by the dismissed soldiers escalated into a night of riots which left at least five dead and damaged several government offices.
The soldiers, who claim the army opened fire on unarmed civilians, fled to the hills surrounding the city and are demanding the resignation of Alkatiri.

BRAZIL: PEOPLE HIT HARD BY GOVERNMENT'S NEW ECONOMIC MEASURES

The people of Brazil are facing a harder time this week after the government took hard measures to tighten the country's economy in the wake of stock market turmoil.
The government has introduced price hikes on fuel, car tax and goods such as alcohol since Saturday as part of an 18 (b) billion U-S dollar savings plan.
Brazil, the world's tenth largest economy, faces months of economic austerity ahead as a result of a sudden crisis in foreign investor confidence.
Brazil's economy has been battered about in recent weeks by speculative attacks on its three-year-old currency, the real.
Spending is down, while tax and interest rates have begun a steady rise.
What was, until recently, hailed as Latin America's economic miracle has been forced into economic austerity and there are already signs that fewer people are spending less money.
Bars, like this one in the Bohemian district of Cinelandia in Rio de Janeiro, already feel the pinch, but though Brazil has been battered, it is not yet beaten.
SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese)
"They (prices) will be hard-hitting. I believe they will be, but not that much. Christmas and New Year parties are coming. People still have some money. We will try to help as much as we can. We don't want to exploit anyone. We want customers in our house, and we're lacking them. We're not having many consumers at the moment."
SUPER CAPTION: Francisco de Assis, bar owner
The Brazilian consumer will be hit hard by increases in personal tax rates and production taxes on basic items like cars and petrol.
Gross Domestic Product (G-D-P) growth is expected to stagnate for the next two quarters as a result.
And the though of lean months ahead has angered many activists who are trying to draw the public's attention to the impact it will have on them.
SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese)
"That's very complicated for the worker to understand. What does the Hong Kong stock market have to do with the AIDS programme and the salary of the worker in Brazil? So, that's what we are doing here, explaining to the population the real meaning of the new economic measures, which mean recession, putting the people out of their jobs."
SUPER CAPTION: Jurema Batista, Rio de Janeiro city councilwoman from the Workers Party
Brazil's car manufacturing industry has been among the hardest hit by the recent stock market plunge.
Many workers have had their hours cut back this week as severe cuts take hold.
Showroom prices are fated to rise and customers are less confident about spending their money.
SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese),
"We were living in a stable economy and suddenly we are told that tomorrow things can be totally different. That gives you so much fear of taking the money out of your pocket and buying the car without knowing if you're going to need this money tomorrow....It's very dangerous. I feel very scared of this uncertainty."
SUPER CAPTION: Clicia Helena Tavares Manoel, Customer
The government hopes to improve financing conditions for Brazilian exporters.
But it will take time for Brazil to recover the losses incurred through a global shake up of financial markets.
And consumer attitudes appears to be shifting rapidly from that of buoyant confidence to nervous expectation.

Thousands of people attended a concert for East Timor in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, on Saturday night.
Portugal has been outspoken in its criticisms of Indonesia over the bloodshed in its former colony and support for a multinational peacekeeping force is widespread.
On Saturday the Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres said a peacekeeping force should be sent immediately to restore security in the territory, even without a U-N mandate,
The Portuguese feel a strong bond with the people of East Timor and on Saturday came together to show their solidarity with them.
Thousands attended a concert for East Timor in the country's capital Lisbon.
Ordinary Portuguese have been showing their support for the Timorese ever since August's U-N referendum on independence.
White sheets have been hung from windows across the country as part of a campaign of support and pro-independence car stickers have proved popular.
On Saturday night there were repeated calls for a peacekeeping force to be sent to the province.
VOXPOP: (Portuguese)
"I think we are here to show our solidarity with the people of East Timor. They are suffering a lot. The importance of this event is to see if we can convince the international community to send a peace force to Timor. They need it."
SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop
SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese)
"This is very important. This shows, this reflects everything that we feel for the people of East Timor. I never thought Portugal could do so much. It's incredible. It's incredible."
SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop
After the concert many of those attending took part in a candlelit parade, and then arranged the candles in the shape of a cross.
The Portuguese government has been among the most outspoken of those calling for a multi national peacekeeping force for the province.
It has even suggested a force could be sent in without a U-N mandate.
On Saturday the Portuguese Prime Minister compared what is happening in the province to the recent events in Kosovo.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The question is whether the will of a people can be destroyed by the force of the gun, whether ethnic cleansing is acceptable in modern times. It was not accepted by the international community in Kosovo, it cannot be accepted in East Timor."

On Sunday thousands of Portuguese are again expected to turn out, to attend a mass given by Bishop Carlos Belo, East Timor's spiritual leader.

Portuguese/Nat
The Brazilian government is facing a disturbing change in the demographics of AIDS victims.
An estimated half a (m) million Brazilians have been identified as H-I-V carriers, but the fastest growing group of people with H-I-V is men over 55.
It's a new dynamic to the disease which has touched so many in this country.
And often the disease is not diagnosed in geriatric wards.
So it's not only the old people who need re-educating about their sex life, but doctors and nurses about their professional approach to these patients.
The Gafree-Guinle Hospital in Rio de Janeiro sees 1-thousand 300 people with AIDS every day.
Five percent of them are pensioners.
The United Nations Programme for AIDS says 540-thousand people are infected in Brazil.
Since 1997, cases amongst pensioners have been on the increase.
A number of factors have contributed.
Old-aged men do not want to use condoms.
Pensioners tend to think AIDS is a disease exclusive to the young.
Thirty percent of the old-aged people who come to hospital with AIDS are already in the advanced stage of the disease, with no possibilities of any kind of treatment.
This 70 year-old man was diagnosed too late.
He now has an advanced pneumonia, liver and neurological infections.
He has only a few days left to live.
Doctor Rogerio Neves Motta has been working AIDS patients for the last 10 years.
He says that doctors themselves rarely think to test for AIDS.
SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese)
"There is a prejudice, that also comes from within the medical profession, such as Doctors and Surgeons and Nurses, that a person with a advanced age, for instance, a man with 65 years-old that is ill, that he couldn't have AIDS."
SUPERCAPTION: Rogerio Neves Motta, AIDS Specialist
Another reason is the advent of Viagra and the subsequent increase in sexual activity amongst the elderly.
SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese)
A: The Brazilians have this tendency of having their sex life more active than others. So, if a person has a very active sexual life during their youth, when this person gets old, this activity is continued. We have to stress that nowadays we have some stimulants, such as the Viagra or other medicines that increase the sexual performance of the old-aged people. This, without a doubt, increased the number of sexual relations that people have during a year.
SUPERCAPTION: Rogerio Neves Motta, AIDS Specialist
The "University of the old-aged" has set up a program to educate the older generation.
Some 2-thousand pensioners take part in small weekly seminars to discuss their sexuality and learn how to prevent the disease.
Doctor Arnaldo Risman runs an Institute of Sexology.
Here, at the "University of the old-aged", he works with all social classes, teaching people about sex in old age and how to prevent STDs.
Risman says the old-aged tend to react like teenagers, when it comes to sexuality.
SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese)
"The difficulties for these aged people are similar to the difficulties of a teenager. Teenagers know everything. If you ask a teenager if he wants to learn about sexuality, he will say that he knows everything. The aged also have the same answer. He has already done that, he has already had sex, he may be widowed or married for many years, so, what does he have to learn? What more does he have to learn? To tell the truth, the prejudice is within society."

Pensioners here learn how to use a condom for intercourse and during oral sex.
For them, it is never too late to learn about sex.

Audio Only: One hour of relaxing Portuguese nature sounds to sooth you into complete calm and sleep. This is for people with excessive background noise at night ie traffic, people who find it hard to sleep, or people who simply love the sounds of the real world around us. Recorded over one year in the Portuguese forest; we start on the edge of the forest, move to a quiet brook, and then return to the village at night where the night rain begins...I recorded this myself and dedicate this to my good friend Nuno Martins for all of his help during my last year in Portugal. This audio loops twice only.

Porto Metropolitan Area, on the other hand, includes an estimated 1.8 million people. It is recognized as a Gamma-level global city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) Study Group, the only Portuguese city besides Lisbon with such recognition.
Located along the Douro river estuary in Northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres, and its historical core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. The western part of its urban area extends to the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. Its settlement dates back many centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its Latin name, Portus Cale, has been referred to as the origin of the name "Portugal", based on transliteration and oral evolution from Latin. In Portuguese the name of the city is spelled with a definite article ("o Porto"; English: the port). Consequently, its English name evolved from a misinterpretation of the oral pronunciation and referred to as Oporto in modern literature and by many speakers.
One of Portugal's internationally famous exports, port wine, is named for Porto, since the metropolitan area, and in particular the adegas of Vila Nova de Gaia, were responsible for the production and export of the fortified wine.In 2014, Porto was elected The Best European Destination by the Best European Destinations Agency.
