The History of Portugal by WanderTooth. We spent about 2 months in Portugal and found the stories of its history fascinating. From the first settlers, the Romans, the Moors, all the battles won and lost, Kings, Queens and other nobility and eras of dominance followed by eras of oppression. All of this has shaped the Portuguese people, from the food they eat, to the songs they sing, to they way they interact with others and so on. A visit is highly recommended and there is something for everyone. Landscapes, castles, Roman ruins, Port wine tasting, Fado music, beaches, and more. And being a relatively small country, everything is easily within reach! GO! ENJOY!

In which John Green teaches you about the beginning of the so-called Age of Discovery. You've probably heard of Christopher Columbus, who "discovered" America in 1492, but what about Vasco da Gama? How about Zheng He? Columbus gets a bad rap from many modern historians, but it turns out he was pretty important as far as the history of the world goes. That said, he wasn't the only pioneer plying the seas in the 1400s. In Portugal, Vasco da Gama was busy integrating Europe into the Indian Ocean Trade by sailing around Africa. Chinese admiral Zheng He was also traveling far and wide in the largest wooden ships ever built. Columbus, whether portrayed as hero or villain, is usually credited as the great sailor of the 15th century, but he definitely wasn't the only contender. What better way to settle this question than with a knock-down, drag-out, no holds barred, old-fashioned battle royal? We were going to make it a cage match, but welding is EXPENSIVE.

wn.com/Columbus, De Gama, And Zheng He 15Th Century Mariners. Crash Course World History 21

The ruins of the A Famosa fortress are an impressive piece of history, even though only the gatehouse remains.
This fort, built by the Portuguese in 1511, is located in Malacca, Malaysia, once a part of the Portuguese Empire.
Construction on the fort began almost immediately after the Portuguese captured Malacca, to prepare for potential resistance.
A Famosa later was transferred to Dutch control and then to British, who wanted to destroy it for strategic military reasons.
When pickaxes and crowbars proved to be insufficient to damage the walls, explosives were used in the demolition.
Near the end of the demolition, Sir Stamford Raffles was able to preserve the last bit of A Famosa, the gatehouse.

Spread across steep hillsides that overlook the Rio Tejo, Lisbon has captivated visitors for centuries. Windswept vistas reveal the city in all its beauty: Roman and Moorish ruins, white-domed cathedrals, grand plazas lined with sun-drenched cafes. The real delight of discovery though, is delving into the narrow cobblestone lanes.
As yellow trams clatter through tree-lined streets, lisboêtas stroll through lamplit old quarters, much as they’ve done for centuries. Gossip is exchanged over fresh bread and wine at tiny patio restaurants as fado singers perform in the background. In other parts of town, Lisbon reveals her youthful alter ego at bohemian bars and riverside clubs, late-night street parties and eye-catching boutiques selling all things classic and cutting-edge.
Just outside Lisbon, there’s more – enchanting woodlands, gorgeous beaches and seaside villages – all ripe for discovery.
Plan Your Lisbon Vacation
======================
Spread over a string of seven hills north of the Rio Tejo (Tagus River) estuary, Lisbon presents an intriguing variety of faces to those who negotiate its switchback streets. In the oldest neighborhoods, stepped alleys whose street pattern dates back to Moorish times are lined with pastel-color houses decked with laundry; here and there, miradouros (vantage points) afford spectacular
river or city views. In the grand 18th-century center, calçada à portuguesa (black-and-white mosaic cobblestone) sidewalks border wide boulevards. Elétricos (trams) clank through the streets, and blue-and-white azulejos (painted and glazed ceramic tiles) adorn churches, restaurants, and fountains.
Of course, parts of Lisbon lack charm. Even some downtown areas have lost their classic Portuguese appearance as the city has become more cosmopolitan: shiny office blocks have replaced some 19th- and 20th-century art nouveau buildings. And centenarian trams share the streets with "fast trams" and noisy automobiles.
Lisbon bears the mark of an incredible heritage with laid-back pride. In preparing to host the 1998 World Exposition, Lisbon spruced up public buildings, overhauled its subway system, and completed an impressive second bridge across the river. Today the former Expo site is an expansive riverfront development known as Parque das Nações, and the city is a popular port of call for cruises, whose passengers disembark onto a revitalized waterfront. Downtown, all the main squares have been overhauled one by one.
In its heyday in the 16th century, Lisbon was a pioneer of the first wave of globalization. Now, the empire is striking back, with Brazilians and people from the former Portuguese colonies in Africa enriching the city’s ethnic mix. There are also more than a few people from other European countries who are rapidly becoming integrated.
But Lisbon's intrinsic, slightly disorganized, one-of-a-kind charm hasn't vanished in the contemporary mix. Lisboetas (people from Lisbon) are at ease pulling up café chairs and perusing newspapers against any backdrop, whether it reflects the progress and commerce of today or the riches that once poured in from Asia, South America, and Africa. And quiet courtyards and sweeping viewpoints are never far away.
Despite rising prosperity (and costs) since Portugal entered the European Community in 1986, and the more recent tourism boom, prices for most goods and services are still lower than most other European countries. You can still find affordable places to eat and stay, and with distances between major sights fairly small, taxis are astonishingly cheap. All this means that Lisbon is not only a treasure chest of historical monuments, but also a place where you won’t use up all your own hard-earned treasure.

Travel video about destination Malaysia.
Malaysia is an exotic world located in the Far East, full of tradition and history. We begin our journey in Malacca, the oldest city on the southwest coast of the Peninsular Malaysia that boasts six hundred years of history. Both Portuguese and Jesuit settlers lived here for a hundred and thirty years and introduced their culture to the region. The city’s history dates back to 1403 when Hindu prince, Paramesware of the Sri Vijaya Realm in Sumatra, established a sultanate. The Chinese-dominated area of the city extends across the opposite banks of the river where the mainly two storey residential and business premises are densely packed together. In contrast, the Cheng Hoon Temple is one of the oldest temples in Malaysia and nearby is the Kampung Kling Mosque which is of ancient Sumatran design. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s modern capital city, is relatively young. It originated in the middle of the nineteenth century at the junction of two rivers. Chinese pioneers discovered an abundance of minerals here. Since then, however, things have much improved and Kuala Lumpur is now one of the cleanest cities in the world with two steel towers as its unmistakeable landmark, connected by an impressive bridge. Since 1926, tea has been cultivated in the Cameron Highlands where the mild and rainy climate is ideal for its growth. British surveyor, William Cameron, discovered this region in 1885 and soon afterwards its wooded hills were transformed into tea plantations that now attract tourists from all over the world. Sarawak is located in Borneo, the third largest island on the planet. We start our journey through this Malayan federal state, in the northwest of the island, in the capital, Kuching. The British Empire had various buildings constructed in the city but its ethnic groups were content to remain within their own surroundings. Malaysia is like a magnificent fairy tale, a melting pot of various cultures and ethnic groups amid abundant tropical vegetation. Although Malaysia has changed, it has not forgotten the rich traditions of its indigenous tribes yet it is now a country that is travelling into a new age.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Portugal.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Portuguese is spoken by the 10 million inhabitants of Portugal….and also by 230 million others all around the world. In fact, Portuguese is the official language of 9 countries and is the 6th most used language online.
2. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, and perhaps contrary to popular belief, S.L. Benfica is the world’s most widely supported football club, with 160,398 paid-up members. The record was acknowledged on 9 November 2006 during the celebrations for Guinness World Records Day.
3. In 1808, when the Portuguese Royal Court transferred itself from Portugal to Brazil, Rio de Janeiro became the chosen seat of the court of Queen Maria I of Portugal, who subsequently, in 1815, under the leadership of her son, the Prince Regent, and future King João VI of Portugal, raised Brazil to the dignity of a kingdom, within the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and Algarves. Rio stayed the capital of the pluricontinental lusitanian monarchy until 1822, when the War of Brazilian Independence began.
4. Portugal’s capital city Lisbon was hit by a devastating earthquake in 1755 (9.0 magnitude), which caused a tsunami soon after. In a cruel coincidence, the quake shook the city on All Saint’s Day when the churches were full of burning candles, which caused major fires to break out. 275,000 people were killed and 85% of Lisbon’s buildings were destroyed.
5. Portugal and England have the oldest diplomatic alliance in the world. The Anglo-Portuguese Alliance was signed in 1373 and is in force until this day! Both countries entered wars to defend the other, including the United Kingdom entering the Iberian Peninsular War and Portugal entering World War I.
6. In 711 the Umayyad Muslims invaded from the south, making Portugal a part of its Caliphate for well over 5 centuries (711 AD - 1249 AD). This situation was turned around two centuries later, when the Portuguese Empire became the first global empire in history. In addition, it was the longest-lived of the modern European colonial empires, spanning almost six centuries, from the capture of Ceuta in 1415 to the handover of Macau in 1999 or the grant of sovereignty to East Timor in 2002.

The entrance to this fascinating world is marked by a block of metal at the top of Rua da Conceicao which is only open to the public two days a year due to the dangerous conditions lurking below.

7. Beneath the streets of Lisbon's downtown shopping area lies a hidden Roman Underworld with chambers, rooms, bridges and corridors. The entrance to this fascinating world is marked by a block of metal at the top of Rua da Conceicao which is only open to the public two days a year due to the dangerous conditions lurking below.

Porto (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈpoɾtu]), also known as Oporto in English, is the second-largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon, and one of the major urban areas in Southwestern Europe. The urban area of Porto, which extends beyond the administrative limits of the city, has a population of 1.4 million (2011) in an area of 389 km2 (150 sq mi), making it the second-largest urban area in Portugal. Porto Metropolitan Area, on the other hand, includes an estimated 1.8 million people. It is recognized as a Gamma-level global city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) Study Group, the only Portuguese city besides Lisbon with such recognition.
Located along the Douro river estuary in Northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres, and its historical core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. The western part of its urban area extends to the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. Its settlement dates back many centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its Latin name, Portus Cale, has been referred to as the origin of the name "Portugal", based on transliteration and oral evolution from Latin. In Portuguese the name of the city is spelled with a definite article ("o Porto"; English: the port). Consequently, its English name evolved from a misinterpretation of the oral pronunciation and referred to as Oporto in modern literature and by many speakers.
One of Portugal's internationally famous exports, port wine, is named for Porto, since the metropolitan area, and in particular the adegas of Vila Nova de Gaia, were responsible for the production and export of the fortified wine.In 2014, Porto was elected The Best European Destination by the Best European Destinations Agency.

Sintra is approx. 25 km northwest of Lisbon and part of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra which became UNESCO world cultural heritage in 1995.
In the municipality of São Martinho you find the Royal Palace, Palácio Nacional de Sintra, essentially built by King Manuel I. It is known by the distinctive shape of the two chimneys.
Under the rule of Manuel I, Portugal developed into a world power. The sea route to India was discovered and the diplomatic representations were extended from Malacca to East Timor and Macao and thus broke the Arabs' trade monopoly for spices. In addition, Brazil was discovered and incorporated as a colony. As a result a considerable quantities of gold and silver came to Portugal.
The Seteais Palace, Palácio de Seteais, was built in 1787 by the Dutch Consul Daniel Gildemeester. In 1802, it was rebuilt in honor of Prince Regent John VI and Princess Carlota Joaquina in its present form. At present, it serves as a Tivoli Hotel.
The Monserrate Palace, Palácio de Monserrate, served as traditional summer residence of the Portuguese royal family. Its architecture was inspired by the Indian Mughal Empire and is unique in Portugal.
The Palácio National de Pena, which we show in a separate video, rises majestically above the landscape.

Portuguese Empire in Africa
It's amazing that a small country like Portugal could manage to be so long an important player in global affaires. Their african colonies achieved independence too soon ,and they still dont managed to become nations. Some History & Facts
As Portuguese Macau, it was administered by the Portuguese Empire and its inheritor states from the mid-16th century until late 1999, when it was the last remaining European colony in Asia under Portugal. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred to China on 20 December 1999. The Joint Declaration on the Question of Macau and Macau Basic Law stipulate that Macau operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer.
Starting in 1962, the gambling industry had been operated under a government-issued monopoly license. The monopoly ended in 2002 and several casino owners from Las Vegas attempted to enter the market. With the opening of the Sands Macao, in 2004 and Wynn Macau in 2006, gambling revenues from Macau's casinos were greatly prosperous. In 2007, Venetian Macau, at the time the second (now seventh) largest building in the world by floor space, opened its doors to the public, followed by MGM Grand Macau. Numerous other hotel casinos, including Galaxy Cotai Megaresort, opened in 2011, and plans for a $3.9 billion complex that will be known as Lisboa Palace is expected to be completed by 2017.
In February 2015, the gambling revenue in Macau fell by 48.6 percent from a year earlier to $2.4 billion, the biggest monthly decline that has ever been recorded. Reasons for this fall of revenue are related to the slowdown that the Chinese economy is having officials pursue a corruption crackdown that's confined in lavish spending.

We next made out way to the old town to see the Ruins of St. Paul's , a 17th-century Portuguese church dedicated to Saint Paul the Apostle. Today, the ruins are one of Macau's best known landmarks. In 2005, they were officially listed as part of the Historic Centre of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Europa Universalis IV The Cossacks expansion brought us a whole range of exciting new features and I'll be playing as Portugal to specifically test and experience the new and improved random new world mechanic, that can now include highly developed native empires. It definitely adds a whole new level to the exploration game and I will bravely go out into the unknown and fight to establish a brave new Portuguese world.
Expansion features:
- New diplomatic options: let the world know what you think of your neighbours by setting a public attitude to foreign powers.
-Tell the world what you want: designate neighbouring provinces as "places of interest", build trust with other nations, and entice allies with the promise of land for their support.
- Tengri: Tengrism is now a syncretic faith, allowing it to tolerate certain secondary religions as if it were a national faith.
- Horde unity and razing: nomadic nations now must pay attention to the horde unity of their tribes – a unity that can only be maintained by the occasional pillaging.
- Improved culture changes: you can now restore a previous culture to a converted province, or convert a province you hold to a culture that is not your own.
- Native policies: set your policy for colonial encounters with natives. Are you focused on quick subjugation, peaceful growth or trading advantages?
- Improved espionage: new spy actions allow you to study the technology of more advanced countries and prod your rivals' subjects towards independence.
- New diplomatic feedback: select provinces of interest, manage opinions, and a new trust and favors mechanic.
- An internal politics system called Estates which brings more risk and reward to country management

Portuguese Ceylon refers to the control of the Kingdom of Kotte by the Portuguese Empire, in present-day Sri Lanka, after the country's Crisis of the Sixteenth Century and into the Kandyan period.
Portuguese presence in the island lasted from 1505 to 1658. Their arrival was largely accidental, seeking control of commerce over territorial conquest. Their appearance coincided with the political upheaval of the Wijayaba Kollaya and were drawn into the internal politics of the island as they sought to establish control over the lucrative Cinnamon trade that originated there. The Portuguese used these internal divisions to their advantage during the Sinhalese–Portuguese War. Direct Portuguese rule inside the island did not begin until after the death of Dharmapala of Kotte, who died without an heir and who by 1580 bequeathed the Kingdom of Kotte to the Portuguese monarch. This allowed the Portuguese sufficient claim to the Kingdom of Kotte upon Dharmapala's death in 1597. Portuguese rule began with much resistance by the local population.

The Portuguese-speaking African countries consist of six African countries in which the Portuguese language is an official language: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and Equatorial Guinea. Besides having a common language, the five former colonies of the Portuguese Empire share a strong “cultural identity, a similar system of governance and a long tradition of contacts and exchanges amongst themselves”. In 1992, the five Lusophone African countries formed an interstate organization called PALOP, a colloquial acronym that translates to African Countries of Portuguese Official Language. The PALOP countries have signed official agreements with Portugal, European Union and the United Nations, and they work together to promote the development of culture and education and the preservation of the Portuguese language. Together with Portugal and Brazil in 1996, the Portuguese-speaking African countries established the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, which East Timor later joined in 2002 and Equatorial Guinea in 2014.

It's amazing that a small country like Portugal could manage to be so long an important player in global affaires. Their african colonies achieved independence too soon ,and they still dont managed to become nations. In the portuguese colonial war, at least in Angola and Mozambique the majority of the populations sustained Portugal and the independence movements were mostly extraterritorial with people from Congo and Tanzania. I also think that the colonial war was fought for nothing because eventually the portuguese dictatorship would had fallen anyway, and the colonies would have achieved independence peacefully.

Heya. So here's some interesting raid action we had on a group made exclusively with members of the kinships Portuguese Empire and Brasil. It was pretty fun and we hope to do more of this, the outcome of this 8/9 vs +13 fights has been really good in our point of view and we'll work to bring more of this out there to show and enjoy.
Comment it as you wish, but as I usualy say: "Against the zerg, every whole is a trench".
I hope you enjoy!

Great work too Rumple! :P
Cheers
Narthor.

Malians Campaign Part 1.
This is the first mission of the Portuguese in African Kingdoms expansion for AoE II HD.
I play African Kingdoms for my first time, without spoilers and without knowing civs, so sorry for my "NOOBity" :-).
Portuguese missions started, that means we are at the half way to complete the African Kingdoms.
But before we can move to Africa, we must first settle some score(s) with Queen Isabella and King Alfonso, in very unique first mission.
You can also remember King Alfonso from El Cid campaign in the Conquerors expansion ;-).
If you enjoyed this stay tuned, I planning to complete whole African Kingdoms campaigns.
You can get African Kingdoms here, now with weekend
discount ;-).

This is the second mission of the Portuguese in African Kingdoms expansion for AoE II HD.
I play African Kingdoms for my first time, without spoilers and without knowing civs, so sorry for my "NOOBity" :-).
Second mission is here, you start overwhelmed by enemies from all sides, only hope is a "Emir" if you convince him to help you and let him do all of the hard work while you rebuild.
But like almost all of the ends in AoE, AoE I style especially, your ally will betray you and you need to take him out too ;-).

In this Age of Empires 2 live stream game, Resonance22 plays as the Portuguese on the special map Canyons in a 4v4 with the viewers. This match shows the new Portuguese civilization that was added in The African Kingdoms expansion. I ended up going for a Knight Rush because of their 15% gold discount civ bonus on all units. In the late game I built several of the Portuguese unique building, the Feitoria, because it generates a steady stream of infinite resources (the gold and stone being very useful). I also got the chance to make some Organ Guns which are one of the Portuguese unique units, the other being the Caravel ship.
My Civilization: Portuguese
My Position in the Team: Pocket
Map: Canyons, Special Map
Strategy attempted: Knight Rush, Fast Castle Age, Mass Feitoria
Game Type: 4v4, Random Map, Conquest
