When dealing with a person having a seizure, do NOT put anything in their mouth, ever. Period. Don't. Got it? Good.
Next, put them on their side - doesn't matter which - in a sort of face-down on the side kind of position. The key is to make sure the saliva can run OUT of the mouth, and not back into the throat and the lungs. Remove glasses and loosen clothing where you can.
Try to prop up the person's head with something soft like a jacket or your thigh. If you see them bashing their foot or hand or any other part, try to pad that, too.
When they start to flail, very -VERY- gently keep them from crashing into stuff and flopping around and hurting themselves. DO NOT restrain them in a hard way as you can tear muscles and so on. Just keep them from hurting themselves. Gently.
DO NOT call 911 immediately. Some people with epilepsy do not want to deal with ambulances and hospitals (and COPS!!!!) just because of ONE seizure. DON'T presume. Let them ride it out and come to. After 30-40 minutes, the "waking self" is back, so let them decide what to do next. Ask them questions and see how quick the answer. The alphabet, simple stuff. You will see them come around fairly quickly, tho times can vary.
If the person has hit their head or is otherwise injured - of if they go into another seizure immediately after the first, call 911.
Check for drug allergy ID. The wrong drug can kill them.

I went into the hospital for an EEG and FINALLY got to see what it looks like when I have a seizure. Apparently this scares people. I actually think it is a little funny. Not in a bad way or anything. I just think I look and sound funny. I don't think it is scary at all. Maybe it is because I have been actually experiencing these for 16 years. I don't know. But here it is!
I was eating breakfast, a strawberry, when I had the seizure. The nurses run in and do the standard stuff that happens when you're in the hospital having a seizure during an EEG. Give me oxygen, suck out some slobber from my mouth. They talk to me when they think I can maybe hear. But I don't start coming out of the seizure until the very end.

A viral video has been floating around of Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton having what appears to be a seizure. She is being bombarded by a series of questions by reporters in a place that appears to be like a Starbucks, then when she turns around to one of them to answer, she jerks her head back several times within a few seconds... in a strange way. Some have said that this is her just being silly because of all the people surrounding her, others have said that this is a case of epilepsy, or a mild seizure caused by her previous concussion that she suffered from a fall in 2012.
In December of 2012, she fainted and suffered a concussion after an alleged stomach virus which caused dehydration. This, conveniently or not, came right before she was supposed to testify before the House Foreign Affairs Committee about the Benghazi situation.
Suffering a concussion can lead to long lasting tertiary illnesses that may also be latent and/or dormant. Sometimes a person may suffer a concussion and not have any other complications at all for a year, while others may have severe complications right away. NFL players often have problems after they retire from a long career of sustaining concussions, same with boxers who receive repeated blows to the head. However, a person like Hillary Clinton, who was concussed at age 65 and is not a professional athlete, may suffer symptoms that are more severe, both right away and throughout life afterwards.
Some medical professionals have reviewed videotape of her appearances after the concussion and said that there is cause for concern. Also, there may be an issue with her coughing fits, which have been recorded on video since at least 2008 when she was running against Barack Obama to gain the Democrat nomination. Then there was the extended bathroom break at the Democrat debate featuring O'Malley and Sanders, where some allege she took the extended break to recover from dizziness and fatigue. Being medically unfit should be an automatic disqualification from becoming the President. Why elect someone that won't be able to fulfill their duties from the beginning? Whatever the case may be, the American electorate have the right to know.

Here her mother, Susan Meehan, administers activated-THC, present in oils extracted from the Cannabis (Marijuana) plant, as an emergency anti-seizure medication. When applied orally between the gums and lower lip, the medication is able to soak directly to her bloodstream through the mucus membranes in her mouth. Which, as you can see, knocks out the seizure in a matter of seconds and with virtually no side effects.

Epileptic seizure
An epileptic seizure (colloquially a fit) is a brief episode of signs or symptoms due to abnormal excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. The outward effect can vary from uncontrolled jerking movement (tonic-clonic seizure) to as subtle as a momentary loss of awareness (absence seizure). Diseases of the brain characterized by an enduring predisposition to generate epileptic seizures are collectively called epilepsy, but seizures can also occur in people who do not have epilepsy. Additionally, there are a number of conditions that look like epileptic seizures but are not.
A first seizure generally does not require treatment unless there is a specific problem on either electroencephalogram or brain imaging.
5–10% of people who live to 80 years old have at least one epileptic seizure and the chance of experiencing a second seizure is between 40% and 50%. About 50% of patients with an unprovoked apparent “first seizure” have had other minor seizures, so their diagnosis is epilepsy. Epilepsy affects about 1% of the population currently and affects about 4% of the population at some point in time. Most of those affected—nearly 80%—live in developing countries.

When dealing with a person having a seizure, do NOT put anything in their mouth, ever. Period. Don't. Got it? Good.
Next, put them on their side - doesn't matter which - in a sort of face-down on the side kind of position. The key is to make sure the saliva can run OUT of the mouth, and not back into the throat and the lungs. Remove glasses and loosen clothing where you can.
Try to prop up the person's head with something soft like a jacket or your thigh. If you see them bashing their foot or hand or any other part, try to pad that, too.
When they start to flail, very -VERY- gently keep them from crashing into stuff and flopping around and hurting themselves. DO NOT restrain them in a hard way as you can tear muscles and so on. Just keep them from hurting themselves. Gently.
DO NOT call 911 immediately. Some people with epilepsy do not want to deal with ambulances and hospitals (and COPS!!!!) just because of ONE seizure. DON'T presume. Let them ride it out and come to. After 30-40 minutes, the "waking self" is back, so let them decide what to do next. Ask them questions and see how quick the answer. The alphabet, simple stuff. You will see them come around fairly quickly, tho times can vary.
If the person has hit their head or is otherwise injured - of if they go into another seizure immediately after the first, call 911.
Check for drug allergy ID. The wrong drug can kill them.

I went into the hospital for an EEG and FINALLY got to see what it looks like when I have a seizure. Apparently this scares people. I actually think it is a little funny. Not in a bad way or anything. I just think I look and sound funny. I don't think it is scary at all. Maybe it is because I have been actually experiencing these for 16 years. I don't know. But here it is!
I was eating breakfast, a strawberry, when I had the seizure. The nurses run in and do the standard stuff that happens when you're in the hospital having a seizure during an EEG. Give me oxygen, suck out some slobber from my mouth. They talk to me when they think I can maybe hear. But I don't start coming out of the seizure until the very end.

A viral video has been floating around of Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton having what appears to be a seizure. She is being bombarded by a series of questions by reporters in a place that appears to be like a Starbucks, then when she turns around to one of them to answer, she jerks her head back several times within a few seconds... in a strange way. Some have said that this is her just being silly because of all the people surrounding her, others have said that this is a case of epilepsy, or a mild seizure caused by her previous concussion that she suffered from a fall in 2012.
In December of 2012, she fainted and suffered a concussion after an alleged stomach virus which caused dehydration. This, conveniently or not, came right before she was supposed to testify before the House Foreign Affairs Committee about the Benghazi situation.
Suffering a concussion can lead to long lasting tertiary illnesses that may also be latent and/or dormant. Sometimes a person may suffer a concussion and not have any other complications at all for a year, while others may have severe complications right away. NFL players often have problems after they retire from a long career of sustaining concussions, same with boxers who receive repeated blows to the head. However, a person like Hillary Clinton, who was concussed at age 65 and is not a professional athlete, may suffer symptoms that are more severe, both right away and throughout life afterwards.
Some medical professionals have reviewed videotape of her appearances after the concussion and said that there is cause for concern. Also, there may be an issue with her coughing fits, which have been recorded on video since at least 2008 when she was running against Barack Obama to gain the Democrat nomination. Then there was the extended bathroom break at the Democrat debate featuring O'Malley and Sanders, where some allege she took the extended break to recover from dizziness and fatigue. Being medically unfit should be an automatic disqualification from becoming the President. Why elect someone that won't be able to fulfill their duties from the beginning? Whatever the case may be, the American electorate have the right to know.

Ouida, age 37, has complex partial seizures; she doesn’t lose consciousness or convulse, but she cannot respond and is unaware of her surroundings. She had her first seizure in 2006. One night her husband Brett woke up to a jerk in bed and saw Ouida completely stiff. Hoping for a cure, Ouida is taking a chance on a radical new surgery. A smart device will be implanted in her brain to detect a seizure and send electricity directly to try and stop it.
Ouida is one of three million Americans who have epilepsy. It affects more people than brain tumors, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy combined. For almost one third of all patients, epilepsy is uncontrollable, unremitting and all-consuming.
Caitlin is 26, and her seizures began when she was 18 months old. She has had more than 12,000 seizures in her lifetime, and many are unpredictable and violent. She takes massive doses of anti-epilepsy drugs, but they don’t stop her seizures and have life threatening side effects. Caitlin was running out of options when her family heard about a radical new treatment: a form of medical marijuana called cannabidiol or CBD. They immediately signed up for a CBD trial at NYU.
Lili’s seizures began when she was just six months old, and she is now 13. She has one of the worst seizure syndromes, which has left her profoundly disabled. Just like Caitlin, not a single drug has helped stop Lili’s seizures. So as soon as her family heard about the success of CBD, they also signed up to participate in a trial at NYU.
Even as doctors and patients push the frontiers of treatment forward, a fundamental question remains: What causes epilepsy? Two years ago, Andy had a massive seizure and woke up handcuffed to a gurney in the hospital. His girlfriend told him he had been violent, but he could not remember anything. Andy had served in the Army in Afghanistan, and in November 2010 a rocket grenade threw him down a mountain. His doctor suspects this blast caused a traumatic brain injury, which has led to post-traumatic epilepsy. For now, he takes medication to control his seizures.

Simple Partial Seizure patient remains concsious. Preictal phase of seizure consists of aura, similar to migraines and can be visual, auditory, smell or psychology. During the ictal phase of the seizure there is actual movement of the body part. Versive seizure is when the head turning, conjugate eye gaze. Post ictal phase of seizure doesn't exist.
Complex Partial Seizure patient is unconscious. Preictal phase of the seizure consists of loss of consciousness, aura, and automatism which are preprogrammed movements and this is common in this type of seizure. Ictal phase of seizure consists of automatism. It lasts longer the simple partial seizure and may lead to a generalized seizure.
GENERAL SEIZURE
Involves both sides of the hemisphere
Absence seizures consists of blank staring. Sudden cessation of motor activity, Flickering of the eyes and symptoms last less than 30 seconds. Characteristic EEG finding of this seizure is the 3Hz spike.
Tonic Clonic Seizure involves the whole body jerking. Preictal phase of the seizure consists of fever, aura, fever. Ictal phase of the seizure is the classic muscle contractions, incontinent, eyes roll back with loss of consciousness. Postictal phase of the seizure the patient is semi comatose and may want to sleep. Todd's paralysis consists of truncal ataxia, Decrease cognition.
Myoclonic seizures is associated with symmetric contractions of body with loss of body tone. Associated with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy, MERRF, Lenox Gastaut.
Atonic Seizure is a sudden loss of muscle tone, very often confused with fainting, but they are actually having a seizure.
CAUSES OF SEIZURES
Any insult to the brain may cause seizures. Causes include Vascular, Infection, Trauma, Alzheimer, Metabolic disorders, Idiopathic, Neoplastic, Neurocutaneous disorders, Psychogenic.
In the younger age group there are other causes of seizures such as Febrile, MERFF, Lenox Geuset.
INVESTIGATION of SEIZURES
Diagnosis of epilepsy is 2 seizures with EEG.
Must do CT or MRI to rule our tumor
Also do electrolytes to rule out those causes of seizures
MANAGEMENT OF SEIZURES
If this is the first seizures rule out common causes such as febrile, acute. Educate the patient on how to deal when patient is having a seizure.
If seizure lasts less than five minutes than do nothing. But if last longer than 5 minutes than give rectal diazepam and go to ER.
If recurrence than refer to neurologist and EEG to diagnose possible epilepsy.
