Transcript - Julie: Hi Bill. My name is Julie and I’m in my 50s so my reproductive years are behind me. Yet I expect to live for about 40 more years. So my question is why? What is the evolutionary advantage to living way beyond the years it takes to see your children born and raised? How has that been selected for and why does that happen? Thanks.
Bill Nye: So Julie, I’m sure you’ve heard this many times. Julie, Julie, Julie. No you have great value to the tribe as an elder. Every tribe, every human tribe around the world has elders. They look to elders for guidance, for experience. Furthermore what is every bumper sticker in certain neighborhoods about? Grandchildren. Grandkids love grandparents. Grandparents have a great role and how many times have you Julie, I don’t know you, heard your mother’s words coming out of your mouth? It’s frustrating I know. But you’ve heard it. It’s like I can’t stop it, my mother is speaking through me I know. So you have great worth as an elder in the tribe. Don’t set that aside. And furthermore I’m delighted that you expect to live 40 or more years but until recently nobody lived all that long. So I mean not to be dismissive at 50, way to go. I’ve been there for years. But to get into the 90s is – a lot of people are doing it now but they didn’t used to. So enjoy it. Carry on. Offer your advice. Furthermore now I don’t know if this is people working backwards to get the answer they expected or if they really made the discovery here but there’s a very reasonable claim that our brains change as we get older and we are not as excitable. We don’t fly off the handle as readily and this is the word that you would use in English is your judgment becomes tempered or managed or evened out. When you temper steel you give it certain properties. As you get older your brain develops certain properties. As you get older your brain develops certain properties. So Julie, carry on as a tribal elder. I mean I discourage you from going up to everyone you meet and just start giving them advice that you might have trouble with that. But I’m sure you’re a force in your family and if you have grandkids I can guarantee you’ll be a force in their lives. So carry on Julie. That’s a great question.

Transcript - Jason Gots: Hi Bill. This is Jason Gots from Big Think. I’m reading a question that somebody submitted in written form who wished to remain anonymous. But it seemed like a question that it would be good to have you answer. "I have a question about homosexuality," he asks. "If the purpose of a species is to reproduce and survive, how would it make sense evolutionarily for humans to have same sex preferences? Are humans the only ones who practice homosexuality? And if so does this mean that homosexuality is a product of human’s personal whim as opposed to instinct?"
Bill Nye: So when I was growing up there was this controversial and super bestselling book called The Naked Ape. And this guy, the author, Desmond Morris claimed, I guess he documented that there is homosexual behavior among primates. And from what I remember – I haven’t read it in many years – was chimpanzees and Bonobo’s exhibit homosexual behavior. And the answer nowadays we give to everybody about this is it’s a spectrum. I don’t know about you but I have known a great many gay men who are married, who have babies, who have kids. So apparently – I’m not an authority on this. I’m an observer of the human condition. Apparently there’s a spectrum. Some people are more inclined to have sex with people of their same sex than others. And I think if you just watch the news right now you can see that for yourself. And so being somewhere on the spectrum of heterosexual with homosexual being on that it’s not genetically lethal, you still have kids anyway. And you’ll hear people talk about the feminine side. You’ll hear people talk about the masculine side. You’ll hear women use the expression well she’s got a lot of balls which can’t literally be true if we’re using balls in that conventional construction. So I would say that it’s something that happens in nature and I remember very well in this book – now I haven’t read it in a long time but man it was a big deal. Openly talking about sex in the 1960s was a big deal that he claimed that there was more homosexuality in zoos than he observed in nature. And that may be just because we happen to capture a couple of homosexual Bonobos or whatever. In other words the sample size is way too small to extrapolate. So let’s celebrate being alive everybody. Apparently it’s just something that happens in nature and look, we’re all here.

Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. According to Bill Nye, aka "the science guy," if grownups want to "deny evolution and live in your world that's completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine, but don't make your kids do it because we need them."
-- Transcript:
Denial of evolution is unique to the United States. I mean, we're the world's most advanced technological—I mean, you could say Japan—but generally, the United States is where most of the innovations still happens. People still move to the United States. And that's largely because of the intellectual capital we have, the general understanding of science. When you have a portion of the population that doesn't believe in that, it holds everybody back, really.
Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. It's like, it's very much analogous to trying to do geology without believing in tectonic plates. You're just not going to get the right answer. Your whole world is just going to be a mystery instead of an exciting place.
As my old professor, Carl Sagan, said, "When you're in love you want to tell the world." So, once in a while I get people that really—or that claim—they don't believe in evolution. And my response generally is "Well, why not? Really, why not?" Your world just becomes fantastically complicated when you don't believe in evolution. I mean, here are these ancient dinosaur bones or fossils, here is radioactivity, here are distant stars that are just like our star but they're at a different point in their lifecycle. The idea of deep time, of this billions of years, explains so much of the world around us. If you try to ignore that, your world view just becomes crazy, just untenable, itself inconsistent.
And I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world, in your world that's completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine, but don't make your kids do it because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future. We need people that can—we need engineers that can build stuff, solve problems.
It's just really hard a thing, it's really a hard thing. You know, in another couple of centuries that world view, I'm sure, will be, it just won't exist. There's no evidence for it.

Bill Nye author of, "Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation" in conversation with Vikram (Vik) Bajaj.
"Evolution is one of the most powerful and important ideas ever developed in the history of science. Every question it raises leads to new answers, new discoveries, and new smarter questions. The science of evolution is as expansive as nature itself. It is also the most meaningful creation story that humans have ever found."—Bill Nye
Sparked by a controversial debate in February 2014, Bill Nye has set off on an energetic campaign to spread awareness of evolution and the powerful way it shapes our lives. In Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation, he explains why race does not really exist; evaluates the true promise and peril of genetically modified food; reveals how new species are born, in a dog kennel and in a London subway; takes a stroll through 4.5 billion years of time; and explores the new search for alien life, including aliens right here on Earth.
With infectious enthusiasm, Bill Nye shows that evolution is much more than a rebuttal to creationism; it is an essential way to understand how nature works—and to change the world. It might also help you get a date on a Saturday night.

Transcript - Many, many, many, many more hundreds of eggs are fertilized than become humans. Eggs get fertilized and by that I mean sperm get accepted by ova a lot. But that’s not all you need. You have to attach to the uterine wall, the inside of a womb, a woman’s womb. But if you’re going to hold that as a standard, that is to say if you’re going to say when an egg is fertilized it’s therefore has the same rights as an individual, then whom are you going to sue? Whom are you going to imprison? Every woman who’s had a fertilized egg pass through her? Every guy who’s sperm has fertilized an egg and then it didn’t become a human? Have all these people failed you? It’s just a reflection of a deep scientific lack of understanding and you literally or apparently literally don’t know what you’re talking about. And so when it comes to women’s right with respect to their reproduction, I think you should leave it to women. This is really – you cannot help but notice. I’m not the first guy to observe this, you have a lot of men of European descent passing these extraordinary laws based on ignorance. Sorry you guys. I know it was written or your interpretation of a book written 5,000 years ago, 50 centuries ago, makes you think that when a man and a woman have sexual intercourse they always have a baby. That’s wrong and so to pass laws based on that belief is inconsistent with nature. I mean it’s hard not to get frustrated with this everybody. And I know nobody likes abortion, okay. But you can’t tell somebody what to do. I mean she has rights over this, especially if she doesn’t like the guy that got her pregnant. She doesn’t want anything to do with your genes, get over it, especially if she were raped and all this. So it’s very frustrating on the outside, on the other side. We have so many more important things to be dealing with. We have so many more problems to squander resources on this argument based on bad science, on just lack of understanding.
It’s very frustrating. You wouldn’t know how big a human egg was if it weren’t for microscopes, if it weren’t for scientists, medical researchers looking diligently. You wouldn’t know the process. You wouldn’t have that shot, the famous shot or shots where the sperm are bumping up against the egg. You wouldn’t have that without science. So then to claim that you know the next step when you obviously don’t is trouble. Let me do that again. Let me just pull back. At some point we have to respect the facts. Recommending or insisting on abstinence has been completely ineffective. Just being objective here. Closing abortion clinics. Closing, not giving women access to birth control has not been an effective way to lead to healthier societies. I mean I think we all know that. And I understand that you have deeply held beliefs and it really is ultimately out of respect for people, in this case your perception of unborn people. I understand that. But I really encourage you to look at the facts. And I know people are now critical of the expression fact based but what’s wrong with that? So I just really encourage you to not tell women what to do and not pursue these laws that really are in nobody’s best interest. Just really be objective about this. We have other problems to solve everybody. Come on. Come on. Let’s work together.

Jesse Lawrence: This is Jesse from central Texas. What are some of the reasons you think extraterrestrials will come to Earth and how should we react to them and how do you think we will react to them? And on top of that what are some of the consequences things like organized religion will have when they eventually make it here?
Bill Nye: Jesse I kind of thought that’s where you were going when you started with the aliens coming from some other world and then well how do you think religions will react. I guess it depends on the religion. The current Pope is going to roll with it. He’s going to send Vatican scientists out there to take a meeting with them and they’ll speak Latin or whatever the heck.
But I know what you’re driving at. If you want to think about this Jesse, talk about extraterrestrials. You say what’s going to happen when they visit. I don’t think they’re going to visit. However, it’s very reasonable that we will in Carl Sagan in fashion detect a signal to it from some other star system. That’s very reasonable. I make no guarantees. It’s the Christmas light problem, the holiday light problem where the lights are blinking. Our light of being able to receive electromagnetic wave from another civilization has to be on when another blinking civilization light is on so that we can cross paths not only in space but in time. We have to have both civilizations existing at the same time. And with the universe that’s at least 13.6 billion years old it’s not necessarily a given thing that everybody will be off – their lights will be on at the same time.
And if you want to think about this Jesse and religions it’s very reasonable, absolutely not proven. We may have the means to prove it very reasonable that you and I are a descendent of extraterrestrials. They just found liquid water on Mars, super salty water on Mars that flows every – apparently flows every Martian year, every time Mars goes around the sun it gets warm enough in this one area the liquid water flows for a while, briny water evaporates. It’s very reasonable that there’s something alive on Mars or certainly that there was something alive on Mars. Then it’s very reasonable that Mars was hit with an impact. You can show that Mars was hit with an impact or comet or asteroid about three billion years ago. And some of the material of Mars was thrown off into space and some if it landed here. We find rocks on Earth that are clearly of Martian origin. I bought one online for kicks. And suppose some especially robust Martian microbe, a Marscrobe was in this piece of material, landed on Earth in an especially fertile time era three billion years ago. And you and I are descendants of Martians. Do, do, do, do – do, do, do, do.
And one of the things you mentioned religion and you mentioned that you were in Texas. I will say I did this debate with this guy in Kentucky who has been very outspoken that he thinks NASA, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, is wasting tax dollars looking for life elsewhere because he – as near as I can tell believes that he has a book written 50 centuries ago translated into English, translated many times. He believes that’s what’s in this book overwhelms everything that we can observe and record and infer about nature. So I guess it depends on the religions how religions will react when we discover life on another world or we receive a signal from another civilization. That’s a cool question man. Carry on.

Carry on.

In “Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation”, Bill Nye urged caution about GMOs. But recently, Bill Nye famously changed his mind about GMOs. Now, as Bill explains to Chuck Nice, by using GMOs we’ll be able to raise more food on less land and feed more people. In this video, Bill talks about the science behind his reversal. You’ll hear about glyphosate, Shikimic acid pathway, Round-Up Ready® soybeans, corn, cotton, pigweed, and of course, the “be-hated Monsanto.”
This "Behind the Scenes" video was shot during the recording of our episode, " Cosmic Queries: GMOs with Bill Nye (Part 1)." If you'd like to listen to the full podcast, click here: http://www.startalkradio.net/show/cosmic-queries-gmos-with-bill-nye-part-1/

Bill Nye "The Science Guy" questions the science behind Bill Belichick citation of "atmospheric conditions" as the cause of the NFL playoff scandal involving the New England Patriots. Bill Nye also put in a last word for the Seattle Seahawks. Bill Nye argues that the most likely cause of deflation is a needle being used to remove air from the ball.
