Due to a growing trend of users using linux, using open source software and then spitting in the faces of the developers, the community as a whole, the open source ecosystem, how it works and what this side of the fence stands for in comparison to the proprietary Microsoft windows operating system and proprietary software world.... I think we need to take a step back, get educated, acknowledge and appreciate how this wonderful operating system and open source ecosystem came into existence. Many of us take the history for granted and make uninformed criticisms with the mind set of a paying Microsoft Windows customer wanting the SAME experience, SAME technical direction and vision with an ideology that is thankfully completely and utterly incompatible with this view. If you don't like it or appreciate the diversity within the open source world then ask for a fucking refund and go back to using Windows, proprietary and adaware infected free software you whiny pathetic cunts. Enjoy

In this talk, Christian Hoera explains the difference between Free And Open Source Software (FOSS) and proprietary software and elaborates on why these differences matter. Furthermore, he gives a historical background to Linux and explains why using Free Software and open formats is important. Learn how you can get full control over your data!
This talk is part of the LinuxDays of the student association TheAlternative.ch, the digital arm of [project21]. In the digital age, we want to draw attention to a sustainable interaction with knowledge and culture. We want to encourage usage and comprehension of Free and Open Source Software (also known as FOSS) as an alternative to proprietary software, as well as promote similar open alternatives in other areas.
Our LinuxDays are a series of events designed to introduce Linux to beginners and help those who already have it enhance their knowledge. They are created mainly for users of other operating systems who want to discover and/or eventually switch to Linux. We start all the way from the bottom and guide you on your way up to a safer and more comfortable digital lifestyle.
In our courses, we cover philosophical aspects as well as technical content. Users already familiar to Linux can jump in at any time to learn more about the wonders of Linux and Free Software. During our Install Events, we will personally assist you in installing Linux on your laptop. Don't worry - of course you can keep your existing OS and additionally use Linux if you want to.
After visiting our courses, you will not only have an easy-to-use and efficient operating system on your computer, but also know how to get the best out of it and find more information on your own in case you are enticed with Linux. You don't have to worry about the limits and costs of proprietary software anymore.
All students of Zürich may attend our events for free. In consideration of international participants, all courses are held in English.
Visit our Website: http://linux.thealternative.ch

Astronomy data has no economic value, which makes it tremendously valuable in testing models of information sharing. Astronomy data is also intrinsically beautiful, mystifying, and important, which inspires us to want to learn more about our Universe.
The WorldWide Telescope is an immersive visualization environment that allows users access to the world’s store of online astronomical data. It can be used to answer questions about the Universe ranging from “where is Pluto and why isn’t a ‘planet’ anymore?” to “what is the true nature of the structure of the Milky Way?” to “does the Illustris simulation output resemble observed large-scale structure in the distribution of luminous galaxies?”
In 2015, Microsoft Research open-sourced WorldWide Telescope onto GitHub after investing roughly $10M in its development over the previous 8 years. WWT code already runs on desktops, on the web, and in planetariums, and the user-base is in the tens of millions. Dr. Goodman will describe how WWT came to be, what the roles of researchers, educators and academics have been in creating it, and how anyone with an interest in the Universe can now contribute to the WWT effort.

Building and Maintaining a Healthy Community with Priyanka Nag
Most open source organizations and projects are driven by the strength of its community. We often experience incidences of communities falling apart due to misunderstandings, lack of good leaders and miscommunications among contributors. Through my talk, I am going to share my 3 years old experience of working with different open source organizations and what I have learnt during my journey as a community leader. A community manager’s role is very crucial in any open community and that is going to be the heart of my talk.

Saturday 12:45 - 13:15 - Main Ballroom
The New Era of Community with Jono Bacon
The last ten years have seen an incredible growth in collaborative communities. Open Source, Wikipedia, the maker movement, and more have demonstrated the power of connected people, united by open vision, tools, and knowledge. Many of these communities though have been accidental. Now is the opportunity to make them intentional. Jono Bacon will present how exponential technology, ubiquitous Internet access, Open Source, big data, and powerful structured communities are providing the opportunity to have a lasting impact across the world. Bacon will delve to the core of what makes us collaborative, illustrate the technological opportunity, and provide a practical structure for how we bring people together around a shared set of goals built on a foundation of existing successful community best practice and behavioral economics. As is usual, his presentation will be illustrated with practical examples, delivered in an entertaining and engaging package.

From the ownCloud Contributor Conference 2015:
Commercial organizations based on an open source project can have a rich and at the same time complex relationship between their internal engineering efforts and the open source communities that are core to their existence, whether they are composed of users, developers, administrators, or others. ownCloud as a growing commercial operation linked to its core to a successful open source project and community has evolved this relationship through the years. In this talk, I will describe the current initiatives in place from the company standpoint and open a channel to talk with participants about how to continue to develop and grow the collaboration threads with the communities at large.

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, so too does Russian President Vladimir Putin’s denial of any Russian involvement. But a recent report from think tank the Atlantic Council used open source information and social media to find evidence of Russian troops across the border.
Using the Atlantic Council’s methodology, VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky follows the digital and literal footprints of one Russian soldier, tracking him from eastern Ukraine to Siberia, to prove that Russian soldiers are fighting in Ukraine.

This 23-minute tutorial uses all open-source software (MapWindow, qGIS, R, Google Earth), to simulate the effect of an industrial pollution abatement program (cap-and-trade) on neighboring districts, using simulated data from an emissions trading scheme pilot program initiated jointly by the Indian government and J-PAL (MIT Poverty Action Lab). This tutorial should serve as a plug-and-chug guide (along with its associated .pdf file) to navigating the basics of using open-source GIS software in applied economics research, including converting .kml to .shp files, creating polygon centroids, calculating a distance matrix, spatial queries, field calculations, projections, and symbologies. Manually adjust the video quality if it appears too low. Tutorial materials can be found here: https://bepp.wharton.upenn.edu/profile/21811/research

Jacob Appelbaum at GNU Project - On Open Source Hardware and Software, XKeyscore & Utah NSA site
In this talk at the GNU project entitled "you broke the internet, we're making a GNU one", Jacob Appelbaum discusses how the world will be a safer place with open source software and hardware. He notes that usually academics and open source developers don’t work well together but they must in order to succeed against proprietary software and hardware companies.
Jacob Appelbaum is a developer on the Tor Project and investigative journalist for Der Spiegel in Germany, where he currently resides.
Jacob speculates that eventually we will make normal websites, like dating sites, private through the use of cryptography and open source equipment and we should be looking 50 years into the future in order to ensure that mass uptake of open source tools is attained.
Cryptography and verifiability is essential for software and hardware so users can check the signature and know what they are using is legitimate. Open source allows for this as there are 100's or 1000's of developers all checking each others work. This also allows for rapid improvement.
The talk is reasonably technical and is being delivered to a technically proficient audience but can be understood by non technical people too.
In the second part of talk Jacob takes questions from the audience, one of the longest answers is on the NSA program, XKeyscore which is a distributed TCP dump for the entire planet where they store multiple days worth of data, they then can search through the data for anything they are interested in.
Appelbaum then answers a question on the TAO or "tailored access operations" which is the black hat arm of NSA. They break into your computer and steal private keys etc
Jacob then talks about the Utah Data centre in Bluffdale which is a NSA MDR (massive data repository). It stores around 100 years of data.

If you want to help improve the subtitles, you can download the SRT files here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/vdgyzne3wq86rgw/Subtitles_for_The_Code_2001_Story_of_Linux.zip?dl=0
If you want to help spread this video, you can make a new subtitle for your native language. If it's not one of the languages already available. In that case, you can just help edit (and improve/correct) the SRT file for that language.
Just send me a message here on YouTube if you want to help with the subtitles. Please use the SRT format for your subtitle and save it with UTF-8 (Unicode) character encoding.

Apologies about the distortion on the upper levels of the volume, had the gain up a bit too high, to ensure my audio was still caught when I faced the projector. If anyone knows how I can fix the distortion (perhaps a screenflow filter) that will be awesome if you could let me know in the comments below!
