PABRADE, Lithuania — On a desolate plain where Soviet tanks once prepared for a possible invasion of Western Europe, American troops are training to deter Moscow from another invasion.
Through a dense smokescreen, soldiers of the Second Cavalry Regiment advance amid intense gunfire on the imaginary positions of a NATO enemy. On their flanks are fellow NATO soldiers from Lithuania where the war game is being held — who just a quarter century ago would have been enemies, as Lithuania was one of the fifteen republics of the Soviet Union.
The U.S. and NATO are ramping up their deterrence capabilities against any Russian threat to Europe's borders —and this joint exercise is aimed squarely at Russia. NATO is drawing a red line in the three Baltic states, all of them alliance members, with a message to Moscow: "Don't cause trouble here and don't try to invade!"
American Stryker armored vehicles speed across the churned ground; later this year they will be replaced in Lithuania by Abrams main battle tanks and another rotation of American troops will arrive.
U.S. Army Capt. Russell Moore, who is leading the troops involved in the current exercise, said the war games show not just that the "the U.S. is willing to stand with all of its NATO alliance partners — It shows that we're strong, Europe is strong and there's a collective defense ready to defend against any foreign aggression."
Lieutenant Evaldas Milkintis, his Lithuanian comrade, agrees.
"We feel safer training together," he said. "We're trying to be ready to react to any threat from outside."
Lithuania has good reason to feel threatened. It was ruled by Moscow for decades until the end of the Cold War — and doesn't want to be ruled by Vladimir Putin now. That's why the small nation has watched with growing alarm as Ukraine's borders were torn up by Moscow-backed fighters.
To its west is the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, home to Russia's Baltic warships. And in the skies above the Baltic Sea, it watches Russian warplanes test NATO's responses.
Lithuania has become one of Russia's main adversaries because it has sent military help to the Kiev government.
Russian warplanes are constantly tweaking the West's nose, flying in formation along the borders of NATO members such as Lithuania and sometimes violating their airspace. While the flights could be merely an intimidation tactic, NATO is taking no chances because many in the Alliance believe Russia's real aim is not just to test it, but to split and destroy it.
Certainly, Lithuania doesn't trust Vladimir Putin.
"We cannot trust anything... they say, not a single word," says Lithuania's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius. "What's happening now it's not just about us. It's about the security of our continent."
When asked what exactly Putin wants, the minister laughs."Who knows the answer because what he's doing is irrational," Linkevicius said.

Baltic leaders have raised the alarm following Putin's defence of the 1939 Nazi-Soviet pact that divided eastern Europe and led to World War Two.
Lithuania's Foreign Minister called on Europe to wake up to Putin's recent remarks that there was nothing wrong with the Molotov-Ribbentrop treaty that led to the carving-up of Poland.
Linas Linkevicius told the UK's Guardian newspaper that Putin's statement was part of a bigger Russian plan to seek endorsements for its agressive and revisionist foreign policy. The minister goes onto say that Russia's land grabs and full use of military, economic and political aggression against Ukraine can not just be described as an alternative but 'simple divergence of views'.

The minister goes onto say that Russia's land grabs and full use of military, economic and political aggression against Ukraine can not just be described as an alternative but 'simple divergence of views'.

Documentary The Hidden Story of The Baltic States tells about the history and causes of rise in the Baltic States the government systems based on succession of states which existed until 1940 and succession of local governments established during the Nazi occupation.
According to the authors opinion, in the modern Europe people don't want to see problems in the Baltic States, don't want to discuss the real history of the Baltic. While discussing the situation with human rights or the glorification of the Nazis in the Baltic States, European politicians use the standard phrase -- "hidden problem". This hidden problem is the threat for the foundations of European integration and security.
The short version of documentary The Hidden Story of The Baltic States was to be in the exposition Building of Democracy or Rehabilitation of Nazism - Baltics at the Crossroads in European Union Parliament. This exposition was organized by a member of parliament Tatyana Zhdanok and was forbidden because mentors could not believe in the facts about glorification of former Nazis which is called the Freedom-Fighters in the modern Baltic States.

Russia is examing the legality of recognition of the independence of the Baltic republics by the State Council of the USSR according to Russia's state news service Interfax.
The decision to review recognition of the indepednence of EU-member Baltic nations follows the Prosecutor General's Office ruling last year that Crimea was illegally handed to Ukraine in 1954, and is certain to alarm the small Baltic Nato-member nations of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

Baltic Sea Voyage Small Ship Cruise Tour, and set sail on a voyage along the coast of the briny Baltic Sea, from Denmark to Poland … from the Baltic states of Latvia and Estonia to Mother Russia … and back again to the Nordic lands of Finland and Sweden. Aboard our 98-passenger, all-suite Corinthian, you’ll first explore the countries of Scandinavia, a region filled with ice-capped waters, wind-blown beaches, bucolic farmlands, and acre upon acre of lush, verdant forestry. Depart Copenhagen—gateway to the Baltic Sea and beyond—and discover a land of breathtaking natural beauty peppered with stunning medieval cities. The population is small in this part of Europe, but places such as Rønne, Visby, Stockholm, and Helsinki blend harmoniously with the mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and woodlands that dominate much of the landscape. You’ll also get a taste of Polish life in the port cities of Gdynia and Gdańsk before making your way to Riga and Tallinn, two cities populated with turrets, spires, and cobbled streets. After decades of Soviet occupation—and a bloodless revolution filled with national songs and patriotic hymns—the Baltic states have reemerged as independent countries with open arms for visitors. Then glide to St. Petersburg for an in-depth tour of this glorious city, founded by Peter the Great in the early 18th century as a showcase for Russia’s imperial might. You can also enhance your experience with our optional extensions to Copenhagen, Denmark and Stockholm, Sweden.

A revamped and expanded version of Bradt's Baltic Capitals, this guide recognises a shift in the nature of travel in the region. No longer limited to a Baltics' itinerary covering Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius, the guide incorporates the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, the Baltic coast from Klaipeda to Liepaja, and inland cities of Kaunas and Tartu.Whereas the Baltic states reflect western European influence, Kaliningrad - an offshoot of Russia - is very different: the Cyrillic alphabet remains and tourists can still see a statue of Lenin, or walk along a Revolution Road. The perfect companion, Baltic Cities details each city's historic sights, from museums to churches, together with scenic walking tours and essential details of where to eat and stay.

Curonian Spit - Lithuania Travel, Tours, Vacations HD
World Travel https://www.youtube.com/user/World1Tube
The Curonian Spit is a 98 km long, thin, curved sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea coast. Its southern portion lies within Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia and its northern within southwestern Lithuania. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared by the two countries.
Geography
The Curonian Spit stretches from the Sambian Peninsula on the south to its northern tip next to a narrow strait, across which is the port city of Klaipėda on the mainland of Lithuania. The northern 52 km long stretch of the Curonian Spit peninsula belongs to Lithuania, while the rest is part of the Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia (see the map). The width of the spit varies from a minimum of 400 m in Russia (near the village of Lesnoy) to a maximum of 3,800 m in Lithuania (just north of Nida).
Geologic history
The Curonian Spit was formed about 3rd millennium BC.[1] A glacial moraine served as its foundation; winds and sea currents later contributed enough sand to raise and keep the formation above sea level.
The existence of this narrow shoal is inherently threatened by the natural processes that govern coastal shoreline features.[2] It depends on a dynamic balance between sand transport and deposition. If (hypothetically) the source area to the south-west were cut off, say, by a large port construction with a pier, the Spit would erode and eventually disappear. It is thus a geologically speaking ephemeral coast element. The most likely development, however, is that the shallow bay inside the Spit will eventually fill up with sediment, thus creating new land.
Current state
The Curonian Spit is home to the highest moving (drifting) sand dunes in Europe. Their average height is 35 meters, but some attain the height of 60 meters. Several ecological communities are present on and near the Spit, from its outer beaches to dune ridges, wetlands, meadows, and forests.[4] Its location on the East Atlantic Flyway means it is frequently visited by migratory waterfowl. Between 10 and 20 million birds fly over the feature during spring and fall migrations, and many pause to rest or breed there.
The largest town on the spit is Nida in Lithuania, a popular holiday resort, mostly frequented by Lithuanian and German tourists. The northern shoreline of Curonian Spit is the site of beaches for tourists. Both the Russian and Lithuanian parts of the spit are national parks. The settlements of the Curonian Spit (from north to south) are:
Smiltynė
Alksnynė
Juodkrantė
Pervalka
Preila
Nida
Morskoe
Rybachy
Lesnoy
The first six are on the Lithuanian side, while the last three are on the Russian side. The Russian side of the Curonian Spit belongs to Zelenogradsky District of the Kaliningrad Oblast, while the Lithuanian side is partitioned among Klaipėda city municipality and Neringa municipality.
There is a single road that traverses the whole length of the Curonian Spit. In the Russian side it goes to Zelenogradsk, while on the Lithuanian side it goes to Smiltynė. The spit is not connected to mainland Lithuania. Car ferries provide a transportation link between Smiltynė, located on the spit, and the port town of Klaipėda.
Human history
According to Baltic mythology, the Curonian Spit was formed by a giantess, Neringa, who was playing on the seashore. This child also appears in other myths (in some of which she is shown as a young strong woman, similar to a female version of the Greek Heracles).
From ca. 800 to 1016, the Spit was the location of Kaup, a major pagan trading centre which has not been excavated yet. The Teutonic Knights occupied the area in the 13th century, building their castles at Memel (1252), Neuhausen (1283), and at Rossitten (1372). The Spit may have been the home of the last living speaker of a now-extinct Baltic language, Old Prussian.

We have recently embarked on a bus tour of the Baltic countries. Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, was the first city on the tour. The old town has a bustling atmosphere with musicians, markets and many shops. There is a little Bohemian Uzupis district just outside of the old town which we explored.
We ended our time in Lithuania with a visit to the Hill of Crosses which has more than a million crosses, an incredible sight to behold.
