Michael Byron "Mike" Nifong (born September 14, 1950) is a former North Carolina attorney. He was the district attorney for Durham County, North Carolina (the state's 14th Prosecutorial District) but was removed, disbarred and jailed following court findings concerning his conduct in the 2006 Duke University lacrosse case. Several criminal justice bills passed by the North Carolina legislature later that same year are believed to have been generated by Nifong's actions in the Duke lacrosse case.
Nifong was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) in 1971 with a degree in political science. He registered as a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War era and participated in anti-war protests. After working as a teacher and social worker, he returned to UNC in 1975 and earned a law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1978. He was admitted to the North Carolina bar.
The Duke Blue Devils men's lacrosse team represents Duke University in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I men's lacrosse. Duke currently competes as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and plays its home games at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, North Carolina.
The first lacrosse game played by Duke took place on April 9, 1938, when the Blue Devils traveled to meet their nearby rivals, North Carolina, which itself had just formed a team the year prior. Duke won that contest, 2–1. The first home game occurred a week later when they hosted Syracuse, who beat the Blue Devils, 17–5. Duke finished the season with a 2–5 record, with their second win also over North Carolina, this time in Durham. The following season, the Blue Devils compiled a 7–1 mark and secured the Dixie Lacrosse League championship.
Ray Brown became Duke's first lacrosse All-American in 1940 and was honored as such again the following year. In 1946, Duke opened the season with an upset over national power Maryland in College Park, 12–4. Despite finishing the season with a 2–3 record, the Blue Devils were awarded the Southern Lacrosse Association championship.

The case evoked varied responses from the media, faculty groups, students, the community, and others. The case's resolution sparked public discussion of reverse racism, media bias, due process on campuses and ultimately led to the resignation and disbarment of the lead prosecutor, Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong.
In March 2006, Crystal Gail Mangum, an African-American student at North Carolina Central University who worked as a stripper, dancer and escort, falsely accused three white Duke University students – all members of the Duke Blue Devils men's lacrosse team – of raping her. The alleged rape occurred at a party held at the house of two of the team's captains in Durham on March 13, 2006. Many persons involved in or commenting on the case, including District Attorney Nifong, stated or suggested that the alleged rape was a hate crime.
A duke (male) (British English: /djuːk/ or American English: /duːk/) or duchess (female) can either be a monarch ruling over a duchy or a member of the nobility, historically of highest rank below the monarch. The title comes from French duc, itself from the Latin dux, 'leader', a term used in republican Rome to refer to a military commander without an official rank (particularly one of Germanic or Celtic origin), and later coming to mean the leading military commander of a province.
During the Middle Ages the title (as Herzog) signified first among the Germanic monarchies. Dukes were the rulers of the provinces and the superiors of the counts in the cities and later, in the feudal monarchies, the highest-ranking peers of the king. A duke may or may not be, ipso facto, a member of the nation's peerage: in the United Kingdom and Spain all dukes are/were also peers of the realm, in France some were and some were not, while the term is not applicable to dukedoms of other nations, even where an institution similar to the peerage (e.g., Grandeeship, Imperial Diet, Hungarian House of Magnates) existed.
