Serious concerns have been raised over the possible exploitation of young, vulnerable women in bars in the Spanish resort of Magaluf, after video footage of a teenage girl apparently performing sex acts in a nightclub there continues to circulate across the internet.
The incident is reported to have occurred during a 12-hour bar crawl led by Carnage Magaluf, as the girl took part in a drinking game involving over 20 men.
Carnage Magaluf regularly hosts bar crawls and parties in the holiday destination, which, according to their website, include “four hours of unlimited drinking four hours [of] unlimited free shots”.
Witnesses told The Sun the girl, who has not been identified but is thought to be British, had been encouraged to drink copious amounts of alcohol as part of a game in order to win a “free holiday”, which was actually a cocktail of the same name.
The video, which lasts for over two minutes, was first posted on Facebook. After it was shared across various social media platforms, one witness in the club told the newspaper: “It was a game that got completely out of hand. The girl was being encouraged to drink more and more and was told she would win a ‘holiday’ if she took part in this game.”
Women’s charities have condemned such drinking games, which are reportedly known as 'mamading' and involve women being encouraged to perform lewd acts in return for free alcohol. Mamading is becoming a growing trend across Magaluf, according to reports.
They highlighted issues surrounding consent, particularly as consuming alcohol could make women more vulnerable to exploitation.
Katie Russell, a spokesperson for Rape Crisis said: “The exact circumstances are unclear but we are very concerned about girls and young women being coerced or exploited in situations where they are potentially vulnerable for example through alcohol consumption.
“There are obvious issues of consent here; it is not clear whether this video was made with the young woman’s consent and it is not clear whether those who have posted and shared the video widely did so with her consent."
Holly Dustin, Director of End Violence Against Women said: “This incident and the wide online sharing of the video points to enormous questions of lack of consent and abuse.
“Just this week Justice Secretary Chris Grayling has discussed possible new law to tackle ‘revenge porn’. The Government needs to urgently consider whether any new law would cover this problem.
“Club promoters like Carnage Magaluf need to ensure they are not promoting exploitation, coercion or abuse.”
The Spanish mayor Manuel Onieva has insisted he “absolutely rejects” the incident and has called for police to conduct an investigation “in order to eradicate similar situations in our leisure zones”, telling the Mallorcan Daily that bars found breaking the law could face closure.
In a statement, he said: "As Mayor of the Municipality of Calvia, I wish to express my total rejection and absolute indignation at the practises which are being carried out in a video which is on the social network circuit.”
The Guarda Civil confirmed to the BBC that they are investigating the incident, saying: "We're on it. The girls are not Spanish, the customers are not Spanish either, but the fact is that it has happened here in Spain. [...] It's an ongoing investigation and I can't give you anymore details."
The Independent has tried to contact Carnage Magaluf, which is a separate company from Carnage UK, but has not received a response.
