What are they? Would you be considered pretty and attractive in Easter Europe?

Contrary to the "Great Illusion" that the end of World War I heralded a new era of peace, the interwar period can be considered to form part of a Thirty Years' War, spanning the period from 1914 to 1945. Under Soviet rule, young people in Central and Eastern Europe were drilled into the ideology of communism - indoctrinated with its sense of purpose, of structure, of belonging. The collapse of communist authoritarian rule has brought greater freedom of choice and opportunity for all. But it's also created a climate of growing uncertainty, especially for the 65 million young people in the region. As the gulf between the "have's" and the "have not's" has widened, the former safe and well-trodden road from childhood to adulthood has increasingly been swept away. Stripped of their sense of "belonging", many young people in Eastern Europe have become "outsiders", as this Life programme shows.

Purchase the DVD and find bonus clips at http://www.hli.org/CEEurope.
In Hungary and Poland we find two European nations whose people and deep Christian roots have suffered terribly under the most destructive ideologies in history -- Nazism and Communism. Although both nations fought valiantly, sometimes together, against the forces of oppression, both are missing millions of fellow citizens lost to war, concentration camps and abortion.
Yet the neighbors of Hungary and Poland in the European Union and around the world are watching as both have made dramatic moves to restrict abortion: Poland with a 1993 law that has virtually eliminated abortion on demand; and Hungary with 2011′s "Easter Constitution," which lays the groundwork for a possible elimination of legal abortion and other assaults on innocent life and the family. Even as pressure increases on Hungary to get in line with the rest of the EU and abandon its Christian identity and morality, Poland finds that returning to a culture of life takes more than changes in law, since Western consumerism has eclipsed the more overt attacks on life and family.
We find both important lessons and hope in the efforts of Poland and Hungary to reclaim their Christian identity, and to return to a Culture of Life.

The Berlin Wall fell twenty years ago, marking the end of the Cold War and the demise of communism. Eastern Europe freed itself from the yoke of the Kremlin and the Red Empire fell apart. Two years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Soviet Union collapsed, paying the way for the independence of its former republics...and the introduction of capitalism.
And today, twenty years on? Have these former Soviet republics overcome their communist past to find a new cultural identity? ARTS.21 reporters set off to find out, heading to Ukraine, where the search for identity has become a battle over culture and language,to Georgia, where a new generation of artists is confronted with a new set of conflicts - and to Kazakhstan, where the national culture is imposed by the country's political leadership - just as the Communists used to dictate a world view. ARTS.21 embarks on a journey from Kiev across the Caucasus to the Kazakh Steppe.

American troops are returning to their base in Germany after NATO military drills in the Baltics. The vehicles are usually transported by rail but U.S. commanders decided to drive the convoy all the way from training grounds in Estonia, Lithuania and Poland to a base in Germany. The ride kicked off on Saturday and will take more than a week. The troops are scheduled to make stops along the way, to boast their heavy metal to the locals. The drills themselves involved 750 US army tanks, helicopters and other military vehicles and around 3,000 US troops. But it's Russian military drills within Russia's own borders which raised more concern. Why? We asked Asia Times correspondent Pepe Escobar.
"In the Now" with RT's Senior Political correspondent Anissa Naouai is the first dedicated nightly Primetime show to air live out of our Moscow headquarters. Host Anissa Naouai has worked in the field for almost a decade and has reported from over 80 cities across the globe. Now from Monday to Thursday viewers can enjoy fresh, honest, and hard-hitting news coverage on some of the world's most pressing issues with one of RT's most experienced journalists . We'll put the spotlight on stories you'll never hear on mainstream networks or even in RT's daily news bulletins. "In the Now" - 8pm Moscow, 5pm London, 12pm New York.

European Civilization, 1648-1945 (HIST 202)
Contrary to the "Great Illusion" that the end of World War I heralded a new era of peace, the interwar period can be considered to form part of a Thirty Years' War, spanning the period from 1914 to 1945. In the wake of the Treaty of Versailles, Europe was divided both literally and figuratively, with the so-called revisionist powers frustrated over their new borders. One of the most significant and ultimately most pernicious debates at Versailles concerned the identity of states with ethnic majorities. For those nations that resented the new partition of Europe, ethnic minorities, and Jews in particular, furnished convenient scapegoats. The persecution of minority groups in Central and Eastern Europe following the First World War thus set the stage for the atrocities of World War II.

Poland: Eastern Europe needs more NATO presence
The country’s foreign minister said during a visit to Hungary that stationing troops from the US-led alliance in Eastern Europe is QUOTE a preventive measure, not a confrontational one. He was responding to questions about the US plans to quadruple spending on troops and training in Europe in 2017 as part of what the alliance calls efforts to deter Russia. NATO has ramped up its military presence

Russia's biggest private oil firm Lukoil is selling around 240 of its filling stations in Lithuania, Latvia and Poland to Austrian company AMIC Energy Management. The deal is to be closed in the second quarter of 2016, according to the company.
Lukoil said that the decision was part of a “program to optimize Lukoil’s retail asset structure in Eastern Europe.”Petrol stations in Lithuania and Latvia will continue to operate under the Lukoil brand for 5 years, while in Poland they will most likely be rebranded this year, business media RBC quotes AMIC. However, the final decision is still pending.
In December, Lukoil CEO Vagit Alekperov announced the company would leave the Baltic countries due to “anti-Russian sentiment.”“We began to lose money and felt a negative attitude towards us," he said.
In June 2015, Lukoil decided to sell 100 percent of its Estonian subsidiary Lukoil Eesti to the Estonian energy company Olerex.
According to Lukoil Vice President Vadim Vorobyev the sale of assets in Estonia is part of Lukoil’s plan to optimize its participation in Europe.
Since 2014, Lukoil has sold its gas stations in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Ukraine. At the end of 2014, the company said asset sales will raise $1.862 billion.

A US think tank, which notably receives funding from the military sector, has lashed out at Russia’s Sputnik news agency, claiming in a new report that the media organization “discredits” Western governments and institutions such as NATO.
The Washington-based Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), which helps the US and central and eastern Europe to shape strategies and policies, has now shifted its focus towards Russia’s “modern warfare”, shining a specific spotlight on the English-language agency.
CEPA has compiled a five-page report, in which it gives a cursory analysis of Sputnik’s reporting, focusing on just one aspect – “European Parliament context” – out of all of its global, 24/7, multilingual coverage.
Referring to it as “one piece of the Kremlin’s media machine,” the author Ben Nimmo accuses Sputnik of contributing to the discreditation of “western governments, policies and institutions such as the European Union and NATO.”
Nimmo’s analysis implies that Sputnik is a platform for merely “a small number of anti-establishment politicians” after calculating the number of quotes and citations of individual eastern European politicians and parties.

NATO has ramped up its military presence in Eastern Europe following the conflict between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russia militia in eastern Ukraine in 2014. The West blames Moscow for the crisis; a charge that Russia denies.

On the 4th February 1945 the Yalta Conference began. Attended by the “Big Three” Allied leaders, the conference saw United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin meet to discuss the government of post-war Europe.
The three leaders had previously met at the Tehran Conference in 1943 where they set out a unified military strategy, but at Yalta the focus was exclusively on the end of the war and its aftermath. It was clear that the war in Europe was in its final stages, so they agreed to demand Germany’s unconditional surrender after which the country – and Berlin – would be split into four zones of occupation. Germany was to undergo a process of demilitarization and denazification, and Nazi war criminals were to be hunted down and brought to justice.
Furthermore, the three allies considered the fate of Eastern European countries that had been under Nazi occupation. Poland was the focus of much of the discussion, but the agreement reached was intended to apply to every country. The Protocol of Proceedings stated that the allies would assist the liberated countries to form “interim governmental authorities broadly representative of all democratic elements in the population…and the earliest possible establishment through free elections of governments responsive to the will of the people.”
The terms of the agreement, when they were made public, were met with harsh criticism in Britain and the United States. Some of these criticisms came to be justified when, at the end of the war, the Soviet Union installed communist governments throughout Eastern Europe.

Moldavia (Moldova) is a historical region, and former principality in Eastern Europe, corresponding to the territory between the Eastern Carpathians and the Nistru river. An initially independent and later autonomous state, it existed from the 14th century to 1859, when it united with Wallachia as the basis of the modern Romanian state; at various times, the state included the regions of Bessarabia and all of Bukovina. The western half of Moldavia is now part of Romania, the eastern side belongs to the Republic of Moldova, while the northern and southeastern parts are territories of Ukraine.

Islam’s Eastern European slave trade by Muslim Turks (Ottoman) and Arabs

The Ottoman penetration into Europe in the 1350s and their capture of Constantinople later in 1453 opened new floodgates for slave-trade from the European front. In their last attempt to overrun Europe in 1683, the Ottoman army, although defeated, returned from the Gates of Vienna with 80,000 captives.874 An immense number of slaves flowed from the Crimea, the Balkans and the steppes of West Asia to Islamic markets. BD Davis laments that the ‘‘Tartars and other Black Sea peoples had sold millions of Ukrainians, Georgians, Circassians, Greeks, Armenians, Bulgarians, Slavs and Turks,’’ which received little notice.875 Crimean Tatars enslaved and sold some 1,750,000 Ukrainians, Poles and Russian between 1468 and 1694. 876 According to another estimate, between 1450 and 1700, the Crimean Tatars exported some 10,000 slaves, including some Circassians, annually—that is, some 2,500,000 slaves in all, to the Ottoman Empire.877 The Tatar slave-raiding Khans returned with 18,000 slaves from Poland (1463), 100,000 from Lvov (1498), 60,000 from South Russia (1515), 50,000–100,000 from Galicia (1516), during the ‘harvesting of the steppe.’ Numbers from Moscow (1521), 800,000 were taken and from Valynia (1676), 400,000 were taken. 800,000 from Moscow (1521), 200,000 from South Russia (1555), 100,000 from Moscow (1571), 50,000 from Poland (1612), 60,000 from South Russia (1646), 100,000 from Poland (1648), 300,000 from Ukraine (1654), 400,000 from Valynia (1676) and thousands from Poland (1694). Besides these major catches, they made countless more Jihad raids during the same period, which yielded a few to tens of thousands of slaves.878 These figures of enslavement must be considered in the context that the population of the Tatar Khanate was only about 400,000 at the time. (1463-1694) while sources are incomplete, conservative tabulation of the slave raids against the Eastern European population indicate that at least 7 Million European people-men, women, children were enslaved by Muslims.
Sources suggest that in the few years between 1436-1442, some 500,000 people were seized in the Balkans. Many of the captives died in forced marches towards Anatolia (Turkey). Contemporary chronicles note that the Ottomans reduced masses of the inhabitants of Greece, Romania, and the Balkans to slavery eg from Moree (1460)-70,000 and Transylvania (1438) - 60,000-70,000 and 300,000-600,000 from Hungary and 10,000 from Mytilene/Mitilini on Lesbos island (1462) (Bulgaru p 567) and so it continued.
The vicious destruction of Constantinople in 1453 shows the religious zeal of the Muslims, their hatred of Christians, massacres, destruction and pillage and of course, the enslavement of 50,000-60,000 people!
Turkoman Archer massacre, enslavement, exile, destruction of farming, destruction of trade, depopulation, reduced productivity, and destruction of the normal exchange of knowledge around the Mediterranean and through Christian and Jewish societies, plus colonisation by Muslims---as also occurred in the conquest of Asia Minor. The states of Byzantium, Bulgaria, Serbia...had reached a high level of economic and cultural development before the Muslim attacks.
The conquest of the Balkan peoples was disastrous and for centuries trammelled their normal economic and social development. Yet its described as a blessing for the population (they had the chance to become Muslim) and we are fed lies of peace and economic unity. The Turks didnt have a higher culture or better civic organisationthey were semibarbarian tribes bent of pillage and war, enriching themselves with booty.(estates, slaves, money, jewels) and rendered fanatical by the dogmas of Islam
Even a brief look at the date list in the slavery series, shows the violence and oppression by the Muslims! Byzantine historian Georgius Pachymeres, a contemporary of the events in the 1262-82 invasion north of the meander, (Paphlagonia, Caria in Asia Minor) described the ruination of towns and monasteries, the fleeing population and the conversion of land into a Scythian desert. He notes indiscriminate massacres, large scale enslavement, the merciless crushing of any resistance and the death of the entire male population where people refused to surrender.
The 14th century Ottoman state had only a rudimentary economy with underdeveloped commerce and trades and money was rare. Enslavement served to weaken nations as populations were depleted and moved. Mass enslavements are documented.
The remaining populations were severely exploited peasants who laboured for others and were subjected to excessive taxes and fines. Similarly artisans were needed so, despite the routine massacres and deportations, the military was used to stop people fleeing and force them to remain.

Abstract
I will present an empirically grounded typology of labour migration patterns among migrants from Central and Eastern Europe. This typology is based on two dimensions: attachment to the destination country on the one hand and attachment to the country of origin on the other. We conducted an empirical survey among labour migrants from Poland, Bulgaria and Romania in the Netherlands. We found four migration patterns in our data: (i) circular migrants (mostly seasonal workers) with weak attachments to the country of destination, (ii) bi-nationals with strong attachments to both the home country and the country of destination, (iii) footloose migrants with weak attachments to both the home and the destination country, and (iv) settlers with weak attachments to the home country. Our findings demonstrate the relevance of distinguishing different migration patterns for the debates on transnationalism and the integration of labour migrants from Central and Eastern Europe in Dutch society.

The NATO Offensive in Eastern Europe & the Class & National Dynamics of The War in Eastern Ukraine
A free public talk @ SFU Harbour Centre, sponsored by the Institute for the Humanities.
The war in eastern Ukraine is at a crossroads. A ceasefire has been in place since February 12, 2015, but violations of it are frequent and the underlying political and economic issues that sparked the war are unresolved. The parties do not talk. Governments of the NATO counties are pushing a 'blame Russia' narrative, and three of them—the U.S., UK and Canada—have landed soldiers in western Ukraine in order to provide training to the Ukrainian army.
Roger Annis, a writer and Vancouver resident, participated in a five-day media tour to Donetsk city and region in mid-April 2015. He will present the tour's findings and offer his own views of the conflict. He is an editor and writer at the website, The New Cold War: Ukraine and Beyond.
