Saint Cuthman of Steyning, Saxon Shepherd who built a church in a West Sussex village in the 7th Century, a film presentation of his life (suitable for use in classrooms and parishes).
Steyning is a little village in West Sussex where, in Saxon times, Saint Cuthman built a church in honour of Our Lord which still stands today. We take a look at the life of Saint Cuthman which was made famous in a play by Christopher Fry titled ‘The boy and his cart’, as well as at the actual church which is currently used by the Anglicans.
Cuthman’s story is of particular delight and affords a contemplative ponder due to his shepherding beginnings, his deep trust in God and his decision to push his mother in a handmade cart over the South Downs to a new home wherever the rope used to secure the cart broke.
Miracles and a little humour make this a wonderful encounter with Saxon Catholicism and England’s British Saints. A blend of historical paintings, artwork, maps and imagery combine with footage of nature and a selection of simple yet creative costumed visuals of Saint Cuthman and his cart.
St. Cuthman of Steyning is particularly noted for its uplifting soundtrack. This is a creative way to learn the life of St. Cuthman with visual aids to help the narrative flow.

Steyning is a small town and civil parish in the Horsham District of West Sussex, England. It is located at the north end of the River Adur gap in the South Downs, four miles (6.4 km) north of Shoreham-by-Sea. The smaller villages of Bramber and Upper Beeding constitute, with Steyning, a built-up area at this crossing-point of the river.
The parish has a land area of 1574 hectares (3888 acres). In the 2001 census 5812 people lived in 2530 households, of whom 2747 were economically active.
Steyning has existed since Anglo-Saxon times. Legend has it that St. Cuthman built a church, at one time dedicated to him, later to St Andrew, and now jointly to St Andrew and St Cuthman, where he stopped after carrying his mother in a wheelbarrow. Several of the signs that can be seen on entering Steyning bear an image of his feat. King Alfred the Great's father, Ethelwulf of Wessex, was originally buried in that church, before being transferred to Winchester - a Saxon grave slab (possibly his) remains in the church porch.

Saint Francis of Assisi (born Giovanni Francesco di Bernardone; 1181/1182 – October 3, 1226) was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher. He founded the men's Franciscan Order, the women’s Order of St. Clare, and the lay Third Order of Saint Francis. St. Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in history.
Francis was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant in Assisi, and he lived the high-spirited life typical of a wealthy young man, even fighting as a soldier for Assisi. While going off to war in 1204, Francis had a vision that directed him back to Assisi, where he lost his taste for his worldly life. On a pilgrimage to Rome, he begged with the beggars at St. Peter's. The experience moved him to live in poverty. Francis returned home, began preaching on the streets, and soon amassed a following. His order was endorsed by Pope Innocent III in 1210. He then founded the Order of Poor Clares, which was an enclosed order for women, as well as the Third Order of Brothers and Sisters of Penance. In 1219, he went to Egypt in an attempt to convert the Sultan. By this point, the Franciscan Order had grown to such an extent that its primitive organizational structure was no longer sufficient. He returned to Italy to organize the order. Once his organization was endorsed by the Pope, he withdrew increasingly from external affairs. In 1223, Francis arranged for the first Christmas manger scene. In 1224, he received the stigmata, making him the first recorded person to bear the wounds of Christ's Passion. He died in 1226 while preaching Psalm 141.

Steyning is a little village in West Sussex where, in Saxon times, Saint Cuthman built a church in honour of Our Lord which still stands today. We take a look at the life of Saint Cuthman which was made famous in a play by Christopher Fry titled ‘The boy and his cart’, as well as at the actual church which is currently used by the Anglicans.
Cuthman’s story is of particular delight and affords a contemplative ponder due to his shepherding beginnings, his deep trust in God and his decision to push his mother in a handmade cart over the South Downs to a new home wherever the rope used to secure the cart broke.
Miracles and a little humour make this a wonderful encounter with Saxon Catholicism and England’s British Saints. A blend of historical paintings, artwork, maps and imagery combine with footage of nature and a selection of simple yet creative costumed visuals of Saint Cuthman and his cart.

This film looks at the life of Saint Philip Howard who was the cousin of Queen Elizabeth I. Initially a worldly, ambitious man of the court, this Elizabethan nobleman converted to the Catholic Faith of his ancestors after hearing the disputations of Jesuit priest and future Martyr St. Edmund Campion.
Due to his conversion and work with recusant Catholics the Earl was arrested while leaving England from Littlehampton, not far from Arundel. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London, eventually condemned to death. He was offered his freedom if he simply attended one Protestant State service, which he refused to do.
The Queen, his cousin, delayed the execution, perhaps thinking he would die or give in to her demands. The Earl however lingered in the Tower of London for eleven long years, not even permitted to see his wife or children.
Philip Howard eventually died in the Tower and was beatified, later Canonised, an English Martyr. He leaves a great witness to Faith and courage for all peoples today.
In this film, Saint Philip Howard tells his own story over footage of the historic town of Arundel, paintings, maps and historical documents connected to his life and original music.
His feast day is celebrated on 19th October.

Polydore Plasden was the son of a musical instrument maker in London where customers to his father’s shop might have included William Byrd. He left England in secret to train to be a Catholic priest, returned on the English mission and was arrested while celebrating the outlawed Mass in the home of St. Swithun Wells. He defended every particle of the Eucharist from priest hunter Richard Topcliffe, promising to surrender his life if Mass was permitted to conclude.
Tortured at the Tower of London, Fr. Polydore was executed at Tyburn in 1591, permitted to hang until dead due to the intercession of Sir Walter Raleigh and is one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. This is a very popular beach resort here in the UK but not so much out of season.
There was an extremely strong off shore wind blowing that made for chilly conditions and challenging camera work.
However I was trying out my old Sony DCR-SR58 standard definition camera and it did amazingly well with the wind!
In this video you will see views of the sea of course, beach huts with the wind whipping up the sand.
Views across to Portsmouth Harbour and the Spinnaker tower. http://www.spinnakertower.co.uk/
You will also see Portsdown Hill that over looks Portsmouth http://www.portsdown.hampshire.org.uk/ with the Admiralty Surface Weapons Establishment (ASWE) sitting atop (now under new owners) http://www.portsdown-tunnels.org.uk/surface_sites/portsdown_main_p1.html
