Jetstar cancels Perth to Bali flight after flight attendant calls in sick

Jetstar has apologised for cancelling a Perth flight to Bali on Saturday after one of its flight attendants called in sick.

Passengers waiting to board the flight were told over the airport loudspeaker at 6.20am that the flight was cancelled, the same time the flight was scheduled to depart Perth.

A Jetstar spokesman said the airline was forced to make the last-minute cancellation when it was unable to find a replacement crew member for the attendant, who "became unwell" shortly before the plane was due to take-off.

Under Australian aviation regulations, the Airbus A320 requires four flight attendants be on board.

A passenger due to board the flight told WAtoday it was not rescheduled and most passengers were asked to collect their bags and return to the front of the airport.

"Ten people got on the next flight in an hour and the rest of us had to walk back downstairs," she said.

"When we asked why [the flight was cancelled], they said a staff member didn't turn up. We saw the pilots on the plane so assumed it was a flight attendant.

"[Afterwards] the lines were huge and going nowhere at the Jetstar counter."

After boycotting the line and contacting Jetstar by phone, the passenger was offered an alternative flight at 8pm later that day but chose instead to make a last-minute earlier booking with another airline due to her short stay in Bali.

"My [Jetstar] refund won't be processed for a few weeks so I had to come up with the extra flight money, plus it was more," she said.

A Jetstar spokesman apologised for the disruption to travellers.

"While these types of cancellations are very rare, we understand it would have been extremely frustrating and our team worked to get passengers to their destination as quickly as possible on alternative flights," he said.

Most passengers flew to Bali later that day on alternative Jetstar flights but some were forced to wait until Sunday morning to fly out.

Jetstar provided delayed customers with food and beverage vouchers and accommodation.

    • That shocking!! This sort of stuff happens all to frequently with Jetstar. I'll never use them. Would rather pay the extra $20/$30 to guarantee the flight happens

      • That's what you get when you 'streamline' and cut staff levels to the bare minimum to save a few dollars here and there. In days gone by (before cheap airlines like Jetstar) there would have been plenty of staff to call upon. Sad really!

        • This is NOT the attendant's fault. It's down to the Ryan Air-style cost-cutting at JetStar. What next, pilots forced to fly while they're sick, surgeons forced to operate when they're sick?
When you're too sick to work, you should not work, as the employers' insurance is voided.

            • Jon, having travel insurance & credit cards will never compensate for cancelled flights.

Even if the passengers got a full refund on the spot there & then, nothing will compensate for the inconvenience of a cancelled flight. Even if a flight is found later in the day, the holiday is already stuffed psychologically, leading to passengers to think what else is might go wrong?

          • TypicalJetstar, seems like they don't have any training in CUSTOMER SERVICE. There is something wrong in their training programs. So much like the arrogant Qantas of old. Anyone but Jetstar for me

            • This could happen with any airline. Earlier this week NZ176 from Perth to Auckland was cancelled due to one of the pilots complaining of chest pain. In Oct 2014 the news was worse when the pilot of incoming flight NZ175 collapsed just after she landed her aircraft and died 2 days later. Nothing unusual about airline cancellations.

          • Rare? This happened on our Jetstar trip last week. First the 6pm flight was delayed for at least an hour because the plane hadn't arrived. Then after they had lined us all up to board, they announced a further delay b/c a staff member had become sick and they would need to find a replacement. Then when we finally got on the plane and had begun to take off, the pilot suddenly slammed the brakes on and announced something 'unusual' had appeared on one of the radars but they thought it was OK now and would try and take off again. Also, rude staff, staff arguing in front of passengers and grotty planes. I saved a couple of hundred dollars flying Jetstar. It wasn't worth it!

            • Me too.
JS cancelled Maroochydore to Sydney , 2 hour bus trip , then over night in Brisbane , (5 hours sleep ) and dragged to Briz AP at 5 am.
Has happened at least once more this month.
              Buyer beware
