The Houchins Cornet Band

“The Houchins Cornet Band” was organized 1896-7, by nine young men, sons of the brothers, Reuben and Clayton M. Houchins. Later on a grandson joined. James F. was leader. Some concerts were given in the spring of 1898 that went more than half way toward paying for the instruments. A snare drum and a fife were added to the equipment. After several of the members had fallen victims to matrimony the organization passed out of existence.

James F. is a newspaper man, a writer of pungency and force, a close student of politics, and a firm advocate of woman’s suffrage. He edited the only journal that has appeared in the Indian Creek valley. His interest in the preparation of this volume [A History of Monroe County, West Virginia] has been most exemplary.

Ōlloclip

I posted the other day about how I’d been fiddling around with a homemade macro lens for my iPhone and creating some interesting shots. My friend Az left a comment about the the Ōlloclip lenses for iPhone so I thought I should check them out.

There are a range of lenses for iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, wide-angle, fish-eye, telephoto, and macro. After mulling it over I decided to order the 4-in-1 (fish-eye, telephoto, and 10x and 15x macro lenses) for iPhone 4 and iPod touch.

These were the first photos. I have to do a bit more fiddling but I am pleased with the results, so far.

As a matter of fact, I am thinking of ordering the Macro 3-in-1 (7x, 14x, and 21x) IF it works on the 4… (It’s for the 5). I have to find out.

Reworked Florals

Some older photographs I have reworked using a number of iPhone and iPad apps.

The Queen Anne’s Lace image reminds me of old tintypes.

I love the coloured ones because they have a very retro look. They remind me of old Technicolor postcards.

Home-made iPhone Macro Lens

After reading a few posts about using the lens from a laser-pointer to make a macro lens for your iPhone, I decided to try it out. I took the lens out of the pointer, used a medium-sized paperclip to hold the lens, and placed the paperclip between my Roots case and my phone the lens can then be adjusted over the phone’s lens. Hey! Presto! A macro lens.

I would like to build the larger microscope but I am carpentry-challenged, so may have to have someone do that for me.

I have done a little experimenting and here are a few of the resulting images.

Happy New Year! (and belated Christmas…)

New Work

Image

Image

It’s been over two years since I posted. i guess it is about time I started trying to get  back to it.

I’ve been posting on Google+, mostly.

I am no longer working, spending all my time looking after my Mom full-time. Earlier this year I was still doing a bit of very, very part time working for my old company but the contract ended and I just decided that unless they offer me something I won’t make much of an effort to get work. The necessity of working from home and being unable to schedule my day, due to my Mom’s needs.

I’ve been spending a lot of time fiddling with my iPhone and iPad and related apps. The above photos were some of the results.

New stuff, in brief

Okay, I will post an update in as few words as possible…

Deer ran into my car.

Got a new car. Barcelona Red Metallic Toyota Corolla, 2012…

Quit my job to look after my mother full time.

Managed to post without deleting the fucking thing.

Fuck!!!!!!!

I just spent half an hour writing a post on this fucking laptop and accidentally hit a key (I have no idea what the “magic” key IS) and lost the entire fucking post. AND WordPress didn’t save the damn draft! No wonder I haven’t been posting in months. My PC is fucked and I haven’t been able to get anything loaded on my new PC and I HATE laptop keys. I keep hitting SOMETHING that causes me to go back a page when I don’t want to (why I lost the post earlier) or a key that pops me back up a line or two and I end up typing over what I typed before. In fact, I hate using laptops altogether. HATE!

I have been using my iPhone for everything and just don’t want to bother with the frustration of posting.

A lot has been going on and I really have wanted to share it but I am not even going to bother.
