Samuel Willenberg and Kalman Taigman were slave labourers who escaped in a dramatic revolt in August 1943. One would seek vengeance in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, while the other would appear in the sensational trial of Adolf Eichmann in 1961. The Treblinka extermination camp operated between 23 July, 1942 and 19 October , 1943. Historians estimate that during this time between 780,000 and 870,000 men, women and children were murdered at Treblinka.
In the documentary film Shoah, directed by Claude Lanzmann and released in 1985, Franz Suchomel, a former member of the SS, was secretly interviewed and filmed at a hotel in Braunau am Inn and provided details on the criminal operations in Treblinka.
This is that interview.
Franz Suchomel was a Sudeten German Nazi and Unterscharführer in the SS. During World War II he participated in the Action T4 euthanasia program, Operation Reinhard, and the Einsatzgruppen in the Adriatic operational zone. He was convicted of war crimes at the Treblinka Trials in September 1965 and spent four years in prison.

Treblinka (Polish pronunciation: [trɛˈblʲinka]) was a Nazi extermination camp in occupied Poland during World War II near the village of Treblinka in the modern-day Masovian Voivodeship of Poland. The camp, which was constructed as part of Operation Reinhard, operated between 01942-07-23July 23, 1942 and 01943-10-19October 19, 1943. During this time, approximately 870,000 men, women and children were killed at Treblinka. This figure includes more than 800,000 Jews, as well as an undetermined number of Romani people.
The camp, which was operated by the SS and Eastern European Trawnikis, consisted of Treblinka I and II. The first camp was a forced-labour center. Inmates worked in either the nearby gravel pit or irrigation area. Between June 1941 and July 23, 1944, more than half of its 20,000 inmates died from execution, exhaustion, or mistreatment.
Treblinka II was designed as a death factory. The small number who were not killed immediately became Sonderkommandos. These slave labor groups were forced to bury the victims' bodies in mass graves. Later corpses were burned on massive open-air pyres.

Kurt Franz was born in 1914 in Düsseldorf. His father was a merchant and he also had a sister. After attending the elementary school in Düsseldorf for 12 years, he worked as a cook for the restaurant "Hirschquelle" before he gave his final exam. He enlisted in the German army in 1935 and eventually entered service in the SS. He was sent into the Buchenwald concentration camp before being transferred in 1939 of the Action T4 'euthanasia' project. In late 1941 or early 1942 he was sent to the Belzec death camp.... -

Holocaust survivor Eliahu Rosenberg was deported to the Treblinka Extermination Camp in September 1942. One of the few chosen for slave labor in the camp, he personally witnessed the murder of thousands of Jews in the gas chambers of Treblinka. Forced to dispose of the bodies, he witnessed every part of the extermination process in Treblinka. Escaping during the revolt in the camp on August 2, 1943, Eliahu Rosenberg gives testimony here about the gas chambers and process of mass murder in Treblinka, a place where over 13 months, approximately 870,000 Jews were murdered.

Introduction to the Treblinka site together with some photographs taken by deputy commandant Kurt Franz and discovered in his home and the time of his arrest in 1959 in West Germany.
Kurt Franz was born in 1914 in Düsseldorf. His father was a merchant and he also had a sister. After attending the elementary school in Düsseldorf for 12 years, he worked as a cook for the restaurant "Hirschquelle" before he gave his final exam.
He enlisted in the German army in 1935 and eventually entered service in the SS. He was sent into the Buchenwald concentration camp before being transferred in 1939 of the Action T4 'euthanasia' project.
In late 1941 or early 1942 he was sent to the Belzec death camp. Later he assumed the post of deputy commandant at the Treblinka camp under Franz Stangl. Stangl later suggested that he was frightened of Franz.
Franz was known for his unusual amount of cruelty and sadism. Franz had a dog Barry which had originally belonged to Stangl. The dog was a Saint Bernard which is usually a very friendly breed. This dog however had a mixture of another breed which may have been the cause for its violence. The dog was trained to bite the genitalia of the prisoners under the command 'Man get that Dog'. However once out of Franz's possession the dog behaved normally and died in 1948 in the care of a doctor in Ostrów Mazowiecki..
During the revolt in Treblinka on 2 August 1943, Franz was visiting a lady friend in Kosów Lacki and was too drunk to do anything about the escape.
He was also drunk when arrested in 1959 when these photographs were found by the police. In 1965 he was sentenced to life. During his imprisonment he complained that he got a life sentence whilst others got off and was very bitter that he had not been released for his wife's funeral in 1992. He was released in 1993 for health reasons. Kurt Franz died in Wuppertal in June 1998.
Franz along with Wagner from Sobibór and their superior Christian Wirth are amongst the most cruel sadists of the war.
My channel is one of the most prolific from Poland, although not amongst the most visited. With almost one film per day, one may be forgiven for thinking I do nothing else but I do have a day job as well. I have produced around 1,000 original films, most in English but also in Polish, French, Italian, Spanish and the occasional hint of German and Hebrew. My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects

However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!
