The Great Irish Famine and Transatlantic Historiographies, 1847-1914 (séance organisée avec Mondes anglophones, politique et société)
Professor Peter Gray
(Queen's University Belfast)
Famine and Transatlantic Historiographies 1847-1914 The second half of the 19th century saw in the Anglophone world the growing prestige of ‘History’ as an authoritative genre for the interpretation of past events, and to some extent the growing prominence of ‘historians’ (some self-defined, others holding prestigious professional positions) as public intellectuals commenting on current affairs. This lecture will focus on the self-consciously ‘historical’ constructions of the Great Irish Famine in the decades preceding the First World War, aware that these occurred in the contexts of both a frenzy of politicised instrumentalisation of the crisis by Irish nationalists and the salience of recalled memory on the part of many of the writers who had been observers or participants in the events they depicted. It gives particular emphasis to the transatlantic nature of the historical formation of the Famine, not just because of the immense importance of Irish America as a site of Famine memorialisation, but also because of the role played by Anglo-America as the focus for much of the public contestations of meaning articulated by British and Irish liberal as well as Irish nationalist writers.

This is a song written by the legend " Johnny McEvoy" He has written some classics, this song is typical of his style, a simple melody yet powerful words that tell you all you need to know. The Great Famine or the Great Hunger was a period of mass starvation, disease, and emigration in Ireland between 1845 and 1852. It is sometimes referred to, mostly outside Ireland, as the Irish Potato Famine, because about two-fifths of the population was solely reliant on this cheap crop for a number of historical reasons. During the famine, approximately 1 million people died and a million more emigrated from Ireland, causing the island's population to fall by between 20% and 25%. The cause of the famine was a potato disease commonly known as potato blight which ravaged potato crops throughout Europe during the 1840s. However, the impact in Ireland was disproportionate, as one third of the population was dependent on the potato for a range of ethnic, religious, political, social, and economic reasons, such as land acquisition, absentee landlords, and the Corn Laws, which all contributed to the disaster to varying degrees and remain the subject of intense historical debate. The famine was a watershed in the history of Ireland. Its effects permanently changed the island's demographic, political, and cultural landscape. For both the native Irish and those in the resulting diaspora, the famine entered folk memory and became a rallying point for various Irish Home Rule and United Ireland movements, as the whole island was then part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
The massive famine soured the already strained relations between many of the Irish people and the British Crown, heightening Irish republicanism, which eventually led to Irish independence in the next century. Modern historians regard it as a dividing line in the Irish historical narrative, referring to the preceding period of Irish history as "pre-Famine".
wn.com/The Famine Song

A brief clip from a documentary in progress by Professor Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin, the Johnson Chair in Québec and Canadian Irish Studies Concordia University, Montréal (DrGearoid.com) and Peter Murphy (SeaBright Productions).
Cap-des-Rosiers on the edge of the Gaspé peninsula -10 hours drive northeast from Montreal (2012)
Kavanagh family are 5th generation Quebecois of Irish origin. Their great-great grandparents were tenants of Henry John Temple, III Viscount Palmerston (1784-1865), one of the most powerful British politicians in history. Serving twice as Prime Minister, Palmerston was in office almost continuously from 1807 until 1865. His immense estates in Ireland—20,000 acres and 14,000 tenants—were managed by his lawyers in Dublin and his land agents in Sligo.
At the height of the famine year known as Black ’47, the Irish speaking ‘Kaveneys’ and their six young children were transported across the Atlantic on a two-mast brig built in 1812, the 242 ton Carricks of Whitehaven. The Carricks made exceptional time crossing the Atlantic. However, when it reached Cap-des-Rosiers on the edge the Gaspé, it was wrecked off the rocks and sunk within hours in the darkness. Of the 183 people who left Sligo, only 48 survived the journey.
This tri-lingual film will retrace the Irish speaking Kaveneys’ voyage to Canada and follow the French speaking Gaspé Kavanaghs as they reverse the journey –168 years later.

Although the potato crop failed, the country was still producing and exporting more than enough grain crops to feed the population. Records show during the period Ireland was exporting approximately thirty to fifty shiploads per day of food produce. As a consequence of these exports and a number of other factors such as land acquisition, absentee landlords and the effect of the 1690 penal laws, the Great Famine today is viewed by a number of historical academics as a form of either direct or indirect genocide.[8]

St Patrick's Day is being celebrated in America, Monday, with a special emphasis on the 150th anniversary of the Irish Potato Famine.
In New York, people celebrating the saint's day observed a moment of silence in memory of victims of the Irish famine.
The famine is also gaining popularity in schools -- from September, schoolchildren in New York will learn the history of the potato famine.
But there's controversy as some have compared the Irish famine to the Jewish Holocaust.
This year, the usual St Patrick's Day revery will be tempered by a more sombre remembrance of tragedy in Ireland a hundred and fifty years ago.
The Irish potato famine claimed the lives of up to a million-and-a-half people, and forced another two million to flee to countries such as America, Canada and Australia.
The famine of 1847 was the worse in Irish history and the year became known as Black 47.
A fungus, called "late blight," spread through the Irish potato crop, destroying the country's food supply.
This year the Irish are remembering "Black '47" with the help of the Internet.
Teachers in American schools hope to bring the story of Ireland's famine to the classroom.
In New York State, pupils will be taught the history of the famine next year as part of a human rights curriculum.
Advocates of the programme say there are critical lessons for today's American students.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Beginning next year, all the schoolchildren in New York will learn about the Great Hunger, I think in the long run, education is the best way to avoid similar human rights violations in the future and hopefully put in a little better context the current struggle in north-eastern Ireland."
SUPER CAPTION: John Lahey, President, Quinnipic College.
But there are concerns that this history lesson may be motivated by political needs.
Comparisons between the Irish famine and the Jewish Holocaust have attracted particular criticism.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"History can be very dangerous if it is used as a political weapon, and so the British government and the embassy are very keen to make sure that that wouldn't happen, and we took steps to put forward information which we believe balanced it out. But you know, looking at that famine it obviously was an enormous tragedy, and none of us would want to diminish that at all."
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Ancram, Minister of State, Northern Ireland
Ancram agreed that the British government of the time bore some degree of responsibility for the famine, but said the tragedy was not a premeditated policy.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"So to suggest that this was in some way a deliberate attempt, and the word holocaust tends to give that impression, would be not only wrong, but actually maliciously wrong. On the other hand, as I said, I think in looking at the ways that this particular tragedy were dealt with at the time by people on the spot, I think had we had our time all over again in Ireland and within Great Britain we'd have done things slightly differently."
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Ancram, Minister of State, Northern Ireland
In Ireland, preparations are beginning for events to commemorate the 1847 famine.
Travel bureaus across the Emerald Isle are already busy promoting the events.
Irish officials say famine remembrances may draw more than a hundred thousand descendants of those who fled Ireland for greener pastures.

During a Biblical seven years in the middle of the nineteenth century, fully a quarter of Ireland's citizens either perished from starvation or emigrated in what came to be known as Gorta Mor, the Great Hunger. Waves of hungry peasants fled across the Atlantic to the United States, with so many dying en route that it was said, "you could walk dry shod to America on their bodies." In this sweeping history Ireland's best-known historian, Tim Pat Coogan, tackles the dark history of the Irish Famine and argues that it constituted one of the first acts of genocide. In what The Boston Globe calls "his greatest achievement," Coogan shows how the British government hid behind the smoke screen of laissez faire economics, the invocation of Divine Providence and a carefully orchestrated publicity campaign, allowing more than a million people to die agonizing deaths and driving a further million into emigration. Unflinching in depicting the evidence, Coogan presents a vivid and horrifying picture of a catastrophe that that shook the nineteenth century and finally calls to account those responsible.

United Ireland, Human Rights and International Law
Dr Francis A. Boyle
Professor of International Law, University of Illinois
During the past three decades, international legal expert Francis A.
Boyle has dealt with some of the most difficult problems created by
Britain's continued military occupation of six northeast counties in
Ireland. In so doing, he along with other Irish Americans engaged the
formidable Irish American domestic lobby in support of the Irish resistance.
This book addresses some of the most important aspects of their historic
campaigns—the struggle to prevent deportation of Irish freedom-fighter,
Joe Doherty, the protest against the U.S.-U.K. Extradition Treaty of
2006, the effort to engage U.S. multinationals in implementing the
MacBride Principles to roll back discrimination against Catholics in
Northern Ireland.
But most significantly, Boyle makes the legal case for viewing the
horrific Irish "Potato Famine"—the Irish Hecatomb—as a result, not of
laissez-faire economic policy, but of intentional British genocide.
This is the definitive book on all legal/political/human rights aspects
of the Irish conflict, including Britain's international legal
obligation to decolonize Northern Ireland and going forward, a legal and
human rights framework for establishing a United Ireland where all Irish
can live in peace with justice for all irrespective of their differences.
United Ireland, Human Rights, and International Law is required reading
for Irish Americans, people living in Ireland, and the Irish Diaspora
around the world.
