STORYLINE:
France's minister for Veteran Affairs visited a camp in Jordan for Syrian refugees on Tuesday and warned President Bashar Assad's regime not to use chemical weapons or risk changing France's stance towards the conflict there.
"You are aware that we have a concern about the potential use of chemical weapons," Kader Arif told reporters after speaking to Syrian refugees and the French doctors treating them.
"If these weapons are used, I think our position today of making a democratic transition happen without an armed conflict, we will see what changes could come about if chemical weapons are used."
Syrian refugees have complained about conditions at Zaatari camp, which is now home to more than 45-thousand refugees.
"The services provided in the camp are very limited, and it's worse than services offered to animals. There is a shortage of medicine, the service which we used to receive inside Syria is better than here," said Abu Mohammad, a refugee from Deraa in southern Syria.
According to Jordanian officials, Jordan hosts more than 250-thousand Syrian refugees - the largest number in the region.

STORYLINE:
A Japanese MP visited refugee camps in Jordan on Thursday and said her country can use its disaster relief experiences to help Syrians who have fled their homes.
Yuriko Koike, Chair of Japan's Parliamentary League to support Syrian refugees, visited the Zaatari camp near the Jordan-Syria border and the new Mrajeeb al-Fhood camp which opened last month.
Koike was shown around the Zaatari camp by officials from the UN High Commission for Refugees and the World Food Program.
She also spoke to refugees in a meeting organised by JEN, a Japanese Non-Governmental Organisation providing emergency assistance and helping Syrian refugees rebuild their lives.
One of the refugees in the camp Abu Mohammad from Deraa drew attention to the poor sanitary conditions in Zaatari.
"We are all thirsty here, look at these children, we don't need water to clean, we need water to drink, go and have a look at the bathrooms and see how bad it is," he said.
Koike agreed with him.
"As a former Minister of the Environment, I thought the managing system of waste management not in good shape, especially in Zaatari, and also to keep the pure water, clean water is so essential," she said.
Koike next visited Jordan's second camp for Syrians, Mrajeeb al-Fhood which is funded by the United Arab Emirates and run by the Red Crescent Society.
Koike said that after inspecting all the facilities at both camps she was going to go back to Japan to try to raise more support.

Displaced Syrians living at Jordan's Zaatari camp are enjoying pizza - delivered to their door.
A family has set up the food business - and it appears to be proving popular.
Another batch of freshly made pizzas baking in the oven.
But this is no ordinary pizza shop, this busy store has been set up inside Jordan's Zaatari refugee camp.
Peace Pastries was opened a year ago by pizza maker Muhannad al-Khairat - a Syrian refugee from Deraa.
His family also works in the shop, helping to make the dough by hand.
Nephew, Yahia al-Khairat learned how to make pizza dough in Deraa when we was ten years old.
"The idea of this business came while sitting with friends as we discussed and chatted about what individuals can do, so we stared this venture and soon all the people in Zaatari started welcoming this idea," says Muhannad al-Khairat.
The family strives to make the pizzas affordable for the residents of Zaatari, despite price rises in cheese, cooking oil, vegetables and wheat.
They even try to save money of delivery costs.
"The primary problem was the price hikes, generally speaking. We delivered the pizzas by bicycles ridden by the kids who work here. From outside the camp, our prices are very cheap because the refugees have very low incomes inside the camp," says Muhannad.
The smallest and most basic pizzas sell for 10 piastres (14 US cents) - the largest and most expensive pizzas cost five Jordanian Dinar (7 US dollars).
"Pizza is not considered a traditional meal for Syrians. Maybe 45 percent of the Syrians eat this kind of food," says al-Khairat.
The men work fourteen hours a day, sometimes selling thousands of pizzas a week.
The family used to run a pizza shop in Deraa before they fled.
Yahia says: "I started this business with my brothers in Syria making pizza dough. Then we became refugees in Jordan, and my uncle opened this shop and I started working with him and helped him open the restaurant, and now I make the pizza here. Thank God, the work is good, I am happy with my work, and I hope to continue."
The family bought a bicycle and have begun delivering the pizzas for free.
They deliver to UN workers too, and do a lot of business during weddings in the camp.
Abu Fahd al-Hraki, also a Syrian refugee from Deraa, enjoys the free delivery service.
But he says the pizza remains expensive for his family: "I heard from my neighbours about this new restaurant that comes to your house with free delivery, but the prices are still high. We can afford it only once every two or three months, and we wish they make the prices even cheaper."
Jordan says there are 85,000 Syrian refugees in Zaatari.
More than 600,000 refugees are registered with the UNHCR in Jordan.

wn.com/Syrian Family Set Up Pizza Delivery Business At Zaatari Refugee Camp

STORYLINE:
An international aid organisation is appealing for more funds to help Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Jordan, saying warmer weather will increase health risks due to lack of shelter, water and basic sanitation.
Oxfam says it needs 53 (m) million US dollars to improve access to water and proper sanitation for the refugees. So far the aid group has received 10.6 (m) million dollars.
The British-based group said in a statement on Monday that diarrhoea and skin infections had already been noted among refugees in Jordan and Lebanon.
The two countries host the bulk of 1.5 (m) million Syrians who have fled the civil war at home, seeking shelter in neighbouring countries.
Oxfam says it needs the funds quickly as temperatures are expected to soar in the region in the coming weeks.

CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The tribal alliance led by Auda abu Tayi (Anthony Quinn) overruns the port city of Aqaba with the Turkish guns only pointed to the sea.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This sweeping, highly literate historical epic covers the Allies' mideastern campaign during World War I as seen through the eyes of the enigmatic T. E. Lawrence (Peter O'Toole, in the role that made him a star). After a prologue showing us Lawrence's ultimate fate, we flash back to Cairo in 1917. A bored general staffer, Lawrence talks his way into a transfer to Arabia. Once in the desert, he befriends Sherif Ali Ben El Kharish (Omar Sharif, making one of the most spectacular entrances in movie history) and draws up plans to aid the Arabs in their rebellion against the Turks. No one is ever able to discern Lawrence's motives in this matter: Prince Feisal (Alec Guinness) dismisses him as yet another "desert-loving Englishman," and his British superiors assume that he's either arrogant or mad. Using a combination of diplomacy and bribery, Lawrence unites the rival Arab factions of Feisal and Auda Abu Tayi (Anthony Quinn). After successfully completing his mission, Lawrence becomes an unwitting pawn of the Allies, as represented by Gen. Allenby (Jack Hawkins) and Dryden (Claude Rains), who decide to keep using Lawrence to secure Arab cooperation against the Imperial Powers. While on a spying mission to Deraa, Lawrence is captured and tortured by a sadistic Turkish Bey (Jose Ferrer). In the heat of the next battle, a wild-eyed Lawrence screams "No prisoners!" and fights more ruthlessly than ever. Screenwriters Robert Bolt and Michael Wilson used T. E. Lawrence's own self-published memoir The Seven Pillars of Wisdom as their principal source, although some of the characters are composites, and many of the "historical" incidents are of unconfirmed origin. Two years in the making (you can see O'Toole's weight fluctuate from scene to scene), the movie, lensed in Spain and Jordan, ended up costing a then-staggering $13 million and won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The 1962 Royal Premiere in London was virtually the last time that David Lean's director's cut was seen: 20 minutes were edited from the film's general release, and 15 more from the 1971 reissue. This abbreviated version was all that was available for public exhibition until a massive 1989 restoration, at 216 minutes that returned several of Lean's favorite scenes while removing others with which he had never been satisfied.

In Amman, Jordan, many Syrians hope the British parliament will support a government resolution paving the way for a military strike against Syria.
Wael Ibrahim, a Syrian refugee from Homs told euronews:
"We support a military strike against Syria. We want to get rid of the regime. They've used chemicals against their people, they've killed children, they've made us homeless and displaced us from our homes, and we hope they will help us to get rid of him."[referring to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad]
Abu Hussein, a Syrian refugee from Deraa said:
"We expect that the regime will evacuate troops from the military bases and replace them with civilians and prisoners, so we hope for a strong military strike that can paralyse the regime, Hezbollah and Iran."
Um Salem, a Syrian national living in Amman said:
"I don't agree with a military strike against Syria, even if the regime is guilty. We are looking for a peaceful solution, more people will be killed if they conduct a military strike, it's enough, people are homeless."
Meanwhile, Israel has called up IDF reservists and deployed missile defence batteries in preparation for a possible Syrian response to an American attack.
Many locals are concerned for their safety, with one, Howard Shulman saying that "there is panic because the news is that there is going to be an imminent attack either sometime today or over the weekend and no-one wants to be caught without a mask."
Some beachgoers in Tel Aviv however did not seem so concerned. One surfer said that she was philosophical about the threat, and that staying away from the beach would make little difference.
A surfing instructor appeared optimistic: "Well life goes on, everything is cool. The ocean is waiting for us and gas masks must wait. We have them at home but life goes on," he said.

Syrian refugees call for military action in response to alleged chemical attack
There was overwhelming support from Syrian refugees in Zaatari camp in Jordan on Tuesday for a military intervention from the West against the regime of Preside...
There was overwhelming support from Syrian refugees in Zaatari camp in Jordan on Tuesday for a military intervention from the West against the regime of President Bashar Assad, following allegations of the deployment of chemical weapons against civilians.
US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday there was "undeniable" evidence of a large-scale chemical attack with intelligence strongly pointing to Assad's government.
Assad has denied the allegations.
The US, along with allies in Europe, appears to be preparing for the most aggressive response since Syria's civil war began more than two years ago.
US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said U.S. forces are now ready to act on any order by President Barack Obama to strike Syria.
The US Navy has four destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean Sea within range of targets inside Syria.
The British government said on Tuesday its military is drawing up contingency plans for a possible military attack on Syria and has called back parliament to debate the issue on Thursday.
At Zaatari, the world's second largest refugee camp with about 112-thousand residents, Um Mohammad a Syrian refugee from the city of Deraa said she supported airstrikes against the Syrian regime "100 percent".
She said that the Syrian people had been let down by Arab and Western countries but that "if they decide to military interfere, God bless them".
She claimed that Assad had attacked the Damascus suburb of Ghouta with chemical weapons, possibly killing more than 1700 people.
"They've given him a lot of time, it's enough for him," she added.
Her words were echoed by Abu Yasser, also from Deraa.
"We hope, the Syrian people hope, that a military operation will start soon. What are they waiting for? Thousands have been killed by chemical weapons, and the western countries are just watching and doing nothing," he said.
Abdullah Saeed, a Syrian refugee from Eastern Ghouta, said he had no faith in the United Nations to resolve the Syrian conflict.
"The United Nations have been lying to us for years, they have been lying since the beginning of the war. They talk about red and green and yellow lines, and they've done nothing," he said, adding: "We don't need food and water, we need only weapons."
Assad has meanwhile denied launching a chemical attack.
In an interview published Tuesday on the website of the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency, Assad accused the US and other countries of "disdain and blatant disrespect of their own public opinion".
The international community appeared meanwhile to be considering action that would punish Assad for allegedly deploying deadly gases, not sweeping measures aimed at ousting the Syrian leader or strengthening rebel forces.
The unrest in Syria began in March 2011 and later exploded into a civil war.
More than 100-thousand people have died in clashes between forces loyal to Assad and rebels trying to oust him from power over the past two and a half years.
While Obama has repeatedly called for Assad to leave power, he has so far resisted calls for a robust US intervention and has largely limited American assistance to humanitarian aid.

STORYLINE:
With thousands fleeing their country daily to escape the ongoing violence in Syria, refugees seeking safety in neighbouring Jordan and Lebanon now face severe winter conditions in camps and makeshift accommodation.
The United Nations refugee agency said on Friday that it is concerned about the severe conditions faced by about 612 thousand Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt.
"The ceiling of the house is leaking water. My daughters have no milk. We have no more bread, no gas, no blankets. What can I say? Whatever I say, it will never express our suffering," said Umm Mohannad, a Syrian refugee from Homs who has taken refuge in Tripoli in northern Lebanon.
Syrian refugee Mohammad Agha fled to Lebanon with his family, including his child who was wounded in the fighting in Syria.
"We are now hosting wounded Syrians in a house that is not even suitable for a normal size family, so imagine what this situation is like now, with the wounds and with infection in his wounds," Agha said.
The UN says at least 60 thousand people have been killed in the war and millions have fled their homes.
In Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, many Syrians are saying not enough is being done to look after them.
"The tents have flooded with people inside them. There are no heaters, there is no electricity, there are no blankets - the situation is miserable," said Abu Abdullah, a Syrian refugee from Deraa.

CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Lawrence (Peter O'Toole) shows no mercy when ordering an attack on a column of retreating Turkish soldiers.

Syrian refugees in Zaatari camp in Jordan were calling for help from European Union states ahead of a conference in Geneva on Tuesday.
The meeting under the auspices of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will focus on providing resettlement and other forms of admission for up to 30-thousand Syrian refugees by the end of year.
The refugees urged participants to fulfil their pledges and to reduce the humanitarian burden on Syria's neighbours.
Thousands of Syrians have fled into neighbouring countries to escape fighting between the Syrian government and rebels, which began in March 2011.
An estimated 80-thousand refugees live in Zaatari camp near the Syrian border.
According to Jordanian officials, more than 1.4 (m) million Syrians currently live in Jordan, 640-thousand of whom are registered as refugees.
Abu Ra'fat al-Atmeh, a refugee from Deraa said the international community had abandoned Syrian refugees
"The western countries are not supporting us, they have put the burden (of Syrian refugees) on the neighbouring countries to Syria and left us without help" Abu Ra'fat said.
Another refugee Alia Hassan said she hoped that European countries would grant her disabled son a humanitarian visa so he can receive proper healthcare.
Andrew Harper, who heads the UNHCR office in Jordan, said one of the objectives for the Geneva meeting is to ensure that people with vulnerabilities and medical cases were given assistance.
The UNHCR is calling on states to make commitments towards an additional 100-thousand places for Syrian refugees by 2016.
In response to these appeals, 25 states have made available more than 52-thousand places for Syrian refugees on resettlement or other forms of admission, plus a significant number to the United States of America.
On Monday, the United Nations appealed for 16.4 (b) billion US dollars to pay for global humanitarian needs in 2015, saying the number of people affected by conflicts and natural disasters around the world has reached record levels.
More than 40 percent of the appeal - 7.2 (b) billion US dollars- would go to help 18.2 million people suffering from the war in Syria.

This suspiciously edited video is Syrian State TV's portrayal of him. The clip is clearly edited in 2 parts where the image cuts to his paperwork and the subject he is discussing is altered.

Narrator: "The Palestinian revolution was at its peak, and many times Fatah carried out 60 special operations a day. Among the leading operations of the Prince of Martyrs (Abu Jihad): the explosion of the Zohar reservoir in 1955, the explosion of the Israeli National Water Carrier in 1965, the 1975 Savoy Hotel operation in Tel Aviv, in which 10 Israelis were killed, the Dalal Mughrabi operation in 1978, in which more than 37 Israelis were killed, the shelling of the Eilat Port in 1979, and the Dimona Reactor operation in 1988 (bus hijacking and killing of 3 civilians), which was the principle reason for his assassination on April 16, 1988."

Syrian refugees living in a camp in Jordan staged a protest on Thursday demanding that the international community set up a buffer zone around Syria and provide more support to the Free Syria Army.
About one hundred protesters chanted slogans against Syrian President Bashar Assad and held up placards and flags in support of a revolution.
Abu-Ali, a refugee from Deraa, said people still in Syria are being attacked rockets and missiles.
"We demand a buffer zone, we demand, if we have to, for a foreign intervention to protect us," he said.
The protesters are among more the 150-thousand refugees that Jordanian officials say live in the Zaatari camp near the Syrian border.
Small business owners in the camp closed their shops and stalls on Thursday in support of the protest.
State media and activists reported on Thursday that in Syria, government troops captured a strategic town near Damascus, cutting an arms route for rebels.
By taking the town of Otaybah, east of the capital, the army has dealt a major setback to opposition forces, who in the past months have made gains near the city they eventually hope to storm.

Syrian refugees in Jordan on Wednesday expressed disappointment with international efforts to end the three-year civil war in their country.
Refugees in the Zaatari camp, near the Syrian border, said the second round of peace talks in Geneva had achieved nothing.
"Geneva, Geneva, Geneva, we've been waiting for Geneva conference to solve our problem, but it didn't have any benefits for us," said Dahi al-Hammadi, a refugee from Deir al-Zur.
Abu Mohammad, a refugee from Deraa, said the conference was unsuccessful.
"It hasn't achieved anything for the Syrian people; on the contrary, even more people have been killed in Syria," Abu Mohammad said.
The second round of Geneva talks has been accompanied by a sharp rise in violence on the ground in Syria.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 4,959 people have died in Syria in the three-week period since January 22, when the first round of talks began in Switzerland.
Delegates from the Syrian government and opposition arrived at the United Nations building in Geneva on Wednesday for face-to-face meetings on the third day of peace talks.
The refugees in Zaatari said President Bashar Assad's "regime can't be trusted".
"The regime has been lying for three years, and they are trying to gain time, in order to end the revolution," said Issam Hammadi, from the embattled city of Homs, where more civilians were expected to leave before an extended cease-fire expires at midnight Wednesday.
The UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is mediating the joint meeting between the the two warring sides.
It follows a tense session a day earlier during which delegates traded bitter accusations for the talks' failure to take off.

Syrian Rebels Seek Israelis' Help

Israeli officials say Syrian rebels are urging them to launch airstrikes against foreign Hezbollah militants and Iranian Shi'ite fighters backing President Bashar al-Assad's forces along the Jordanian and Israeli borders in southern Syria, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Assad's commanders turned to the Lebanon-based radicals and Iranian fighters in a bid to thwart Syrian rebels from ramping up attacks near Damascus, said a representative from the UK-based pro-opposition monitoring group, which gets information from a network of informants on the ground inside Syria.
The group also says Syrian government forces have recently made “significant progress” both in the border regions near Jordan and in parts of the Golan Heights not already under Israeli control.
Activists say aerial support was an important factor in the Syrian forces' advance. The Syrian Observatory says Assad’s warplanes have carried out more than 650 airstrikes across the country this month alone, with most of those raids targeting southern Syria and suburbs of Damascus.
"Regime troops and their Hezbollah-led allies are advancing in the area linking Deraa, Quneitra and Damascus provinces," the Syrian Observatory said.
In a recent interview with Reuters, a senior rebel commander in the south, Abu Osama al-Jolani, predicted “the battle could be lengthy.” The rebels' tactics, he said, "will be hit and run — this is the system we are going to use in battle.”
Israeli raids
Israeli jets have attacked Hezbollah forces in Syria before, but not at the bidding of Syrian rebel commanders. They have focused their strikes on Lebanese Shia militiamen at times when Israeli commanders suspected they were transporting advanced weaponry — from Syrian arsenals or from their Iranian patrons — back into Lebanon for use in any future conflict with Israel.
An exception was a January 18 airstrike on a convoy in the Syrian Golan Heights that killed six Hezbollah fighters and an Iranian general. The general, Mohammad Allahdadi, was a senior figure in Tehran's military mission supporting the Syrian government. Israeli officials said they carried out that strike because they believed Hezbollah was planning an attack on Israel.
In Beirut, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah afterwards extolled the “fusion of Lebanese-Iranian blood on Syrian territory.” Hezbollah last fought Israel in 2006 in a 34-day war.
Former Israeli government official Mendi Safadi told The Jerusalem Post last week that “the Syrian opposition contacted me … and asked for me to relay a message to the [Israeli] prime minister that Israel should give Hezbollah and Iran another hard hit to stop their progress.”
He said Syrian government forces and their allies, Hezbollah and Iran, are “using all means” to seize control of territory in southern Syria that borders Israel.
Syria’s southern provinces are the last stronghold of moderate and Islamist insurgents battling the Assad government. They have lost much of their former territory in the north and east, either to militants from the so-called Islamic State group or to Jabhat al-Nusra, an al-Qaida affiliate. In western Syria, Hezbollah forces advanced rebel forces last year, and have since consolidated their gains.
Southern provinces fighting
The southern struggle has received the least international media coverage in the four-year-long civil war — in part because Western reporters have difficulty accessing the area.
“The rebels in the south comprise a diverse array of fighters,” according to analyst Aymenn Jawad al-Tamimi of the Middle East Forum, a U.S.-based think tank. A “relative lack of in-fighting and increased cooperation” between them has made it difficult for the Assad government to make decisive gains against them, he said. Notably, the Islamic State has little presence in the south, just as Jabhat al-Nusra has made little headway outside the Damascus suburbs.
Moderate and Islamist brigades have been supplied with arms shipments by Western and Gulf powers via Jordan, say rebel commanders. Those supplies have continued apace while some rebel brigades in the north have this year seen their shipments and aid reduced by the U.S., according to rebel commanders.
US officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, acknowledge that they have cut all support to four of sixteen brigades they had been aiding in the north. Of the remaining 12, some brigades have also seen reductions in American financial support.
They say the funding cuts are a reflection of brigades collapsing in the face of jihadist attacks, or because of a failure to perform.
A moderate rebel commander in the north told VOA that the southern rebel brigades — some of which have received anti-tank missiles — are kept on a tighter leash by U.S. and Gulf backers than the northern brigades and are more directed in their fighting and operations.

The Free Syrian Army (Arabic: الجيش السوري الحر, Al-Jayš Al-Suri Al-Ḥurr) is the main armed opposition group operating in Syria that has been active during the Syrian civil war. Composed of defected Syrian Armed Forces personnel and volunteers, its formation was announced on 29 July 2011 in a video released on the internet by a uniformed group of deserters from the Syrian military who called upon members of the Syrian army to defect and join them. The leader of the group, who identified himself as Colonel Riad al-Asaad, announced that the Free Syrian Army would work with demonstrators to bring down the system, and declared that all security forces attacking civilians are justified targets.
Riad al-Asaad has stated that the Free Syrian Army (FSA) has no political goals except the removal of Bashar Assad as president of Syria. The FSA has also claimed that the conflict is not sectarian, that they have in their ranks Alawis who oppose the government, and that there will be no reprisals if it falls. On 23 September 2011, the Free Syrian Army merged with the Free Officers Movement (Arabic: حركة الضباط الأحرار, ħarakat al-ḍubbaṭ al-aħrar) and became the main opposition army group. By early December, there were an estimated 15,000 to 25,000 defectors from the armed forces according to activist and media sources, western intelligence sources estimated greater than 10,000 defectors. The actual number of soldiers defecting to the Free Syrian Army is unknown.
The FSA operates throughout Syria, both in urban areas and in the countryside. Forces are active in the northwest (Idlib, Aleppo), the central region (Homs, Hama, and Rastan), the coast around Latakia, the south (Deraa and Houran), the east (Dayr al-Zawr, Abu Kamal), and the Damascus area. The largest concentration of these forces appears to be in the central region (Homs, Hama, and surrounding areas), with nine or more battalions active there. The Free Syrian Army has stated that it does not have the resources to occupy and take control of territories, and instead relies primarily on hit and run attacks to prompt the Syrian army into withdrawing. The head of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon has said that the Free Syrian Army controlled significant parts of some cities.

This is a community effort bringing together many community leaders from different organisations and masajid, as a means for the community to stand together in support for our brothers and sisters in Syria.
The situation in Syria has come to a climax in the last few weeks with political and military defections, persistent protests and an increasingly brutal crackdown by the regime on those seeking change. Over 10000 Muslims have now been killed by the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad, and many more have been injured and displaced. Nevertheless, the uprising which started in January 2010 and took off from Deraa has now persisted for almost a year and spread to all cities in Syria -- a testament the courage of the Muslims of Syria.
Join us to send a strong message of support for our brothers and sisters in Syria and against the brutality and oppression of the Syrian regime.
