Azerbaijan (i/ˌæzərbaɪˈdʒɑːn/ AZ-ər-by-JAHN; Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan [ɑzærbɑjdʒɑn]), officially the Republic of Azerbaijan (Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan Respublikası), is a transcontinental country in the Caucasus region, situated at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is bounded by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west and Iran to the south. The exclave of Nakhchivan is bounded by Armenia to the north and east, Iran to the south and west, while having a short border with Turkey in the northwest.
The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic proclaimed its independence in 1918 and became the first Muslim-majority democratic and secular republic. It was also the first Muslim-majority country to have operas, theaters and modern universities. The country was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1920 as the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. Azerbaijan proclaimed its independence on 30 August 1991, before the official dissolution of the USSR. In September 1991, the disputed Armenian-majority Nagorno-Karabakh region re-affirmed its willingness to create a separate state as the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. The region, effectively independent since the beginning of the Nagorno-Karabakh War in 1991, is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan until a final solution to its status is found through negotiations facilitated by the OSCE.
Turkish people (Turkish: Türk milleti), or the Turks (Turkish: Türkler), also known as Anatolian Turks (Turkish: Anadolu Türkleri) are a Turkic ethnic group living mainly in Turkey and they speak Turkish, a Turkic language. They are the largest ethnic group in Turkey, as well as the largest ethnic group among the speakers of Turkic languages. Ethnic Turkish minorities exist in the former lands of the Ottoman Empire. In addition, a Turkish diaspora has been established with modern migration, particularly in Western Europe.
The ethnonym "Turk" may be first mentioned in Herodotus' (c. 484–425 BCE) work "Targitas"; furthermore, during the first century CE., Pomponius Mela refers to the "Turcae" in the forests north of the Sea of Azov, and Pliny the Elder lists the "Tyrcae" among the people of the same area. They attest that these people are followers of Buddha. The first definite reference to the "Turks" come mainly from Chinese sources in the sixth century. In these sources, "Turk" appears as "Tujue" (Chinese: 突厥; Wade–Giles: T’u-chüe), which referred to the Göktürks. Although "Turk" refers to Turkish people, it may also sometimes refer to the wider language group of Turkic peoples. They are closely related to Azerbaijani people, also known as "Azerbaijani Turks", who live primarily in Azerbaijan Republic and Iran. Azeri Turkish and Istanbul Turkish are mutually intelligible.

The small Central Asian country of Azerbaijan has found itself caught up in the rising international tensions over neighboring Iran and its nuclear program. Despite traditional ties with Iran, the former Soviet republic has increasingly aligned itself with the West, and with Israel. An incident at a recent soccer match in the Iranian city of Tabriz is still a point of pride in Azerbaijan. In the middle of the match, hundreds of ethnic Azeris in the crowd broke out their national flags and began to chant that the city belongs to them. The video was a big hit in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. It was a rare demonstration by Iran's ethnic Azeri minority, many of whom argue that northern Iran should be part of a greater Azerbaijan — a sentiment that is shared by many in Baku. And tha...

Unrest in Iran has now spread to the ethnic Azerbaijani regions of the country. Azerbaijanis make up more then a third of Iran's total population. They have played a decisive role in the last four revolutions in Iran. Despite this there are major problems in Iran for Azerbaijanis, mainly cultural oppression. There are no Azerbaijani language schools in Iran, yet other minorities have dozens of schools. For the past few decades Tehran has been attempting to assimilate the Azerbaijanis into a new Persian identity. In this video thousands upon thousands Azerbaijanis in Iran express their opinions on matter.

As the Western media continues to report on Iran's Green Movement, we invite all to consider another very important protest, three years before the infamous election of June 2009. Every year in May 22nd members of Azerbaijani community in Iran commemorate the event they call 'cartoon incident'. Four years ago, on May 12, 2006, an Iranian State newspaper, Iran Daily, published a cartoon depicting Azerbaijani Turks (in Iran) as cockroaches. The cartoon strip showed a cockroach speaking Azeri-Turkic—the native language of Azerbaijanis—and suggested people deny the cockroach food until it learned to speak Persian. This invective was far too much for Azerbaijanis and it led to several peaceful protests in the northern cities of Iran. By May 22nd, hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis took t...

Caucasus map expert Rouben Galichian (of Armenian descendance) calling Azerbaijan a Soviet creation. In his book “Clash of Histories in the South Caucasus: Redrawing the Map of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Iran,” Rouben Galichian talks about the motives and methodology employed by Azerbaijani historians and geographers over the past century to officially recreate the history, boundaries and even the ethnicity of this historically volatile region. As the only former Soviet republic not to be created from an established ethnic group, ever since its formation in 1918, Azerbaijan has used strategies adapted especially from the USSR and Pan-Turkism movement to create a nationalistic ethnos/mythos at odds with the historical and geographical reality. Particular focus is given in the aforementi...
Azerbaijan or Azarbaijan (Persian: آذربایجان Āzarbāijān; Azerbaijani: آذربایجان), also Iranian Azerbaijan, is a region in northwestern Iran. It is also historically known as Atropatene and Aturpatakan. The region is referred by some as South Azerbaijan or Southern Azerbaijan; however, some scholars and sources view these terms as being irredentist and politically motivated. The name Azerbaijan itself is derived from Atropates, the Satrap (governor) of Medea in the Achaemenid empire, who ruled a region found in modern Iranian Azerbaijan called Atropatene. Atropates name is believed to be derived from the Old Persian roots meaning "protected by fire." The name is also mentioned in the Avestan Frawardin Yasht: âterepâtahe ashaonô fravashîm ýazamaide which translates literally to: "We worsh...
