The ‘mud men’ tribe live near Goroka, along the upper reaches of the Asaro river. Their strange means of defence is to turn into spirits and frighten off their enemies.
For this, they make these masks of mud which, with their grotesque, exaggerated features.
Once they have finished their masks, the warriors daub their bodies with mud, which they will later dye grey with another, more liquid, type of mud.
They also decorate their waists with ferns which, spread with mud, take on an ethereal appearance, making the ghostly figures look even more convincing.
According to the legend, these methods of invoking the gods began a long time in the past. The Asaro were being hunted by the most numerous of their enemies. Then, one of the ancients, a man called Pukiro Pode,
had a dream in which he saw the image of grey, terrifying spirits. That same night they made the first masks of mud. The men attached bamboo canes to their fingers, like long fingernails, and daubed their bodies with mud.
Shortly before sunrise, in the shadows of the forest, the mud ghosts approached the enemy lines, with slow, sinuous movements. When they saw them, their enemies fled, terrified, and the Asaro were saved.

In this documentary we travel to Indonesia, the Sulawesi island, there we know the Toraja and Bajau, two ethnic groups who have a very particular culture and traditions. There, we attended a Toraja funeral, an event that they have become an amazing ritual of several days. We dive into the wonderful world that lies behind the coral reef that runs through large part of the Indonesian archipelago. And finally we boarded on the Bajau (sea gypsies) houseboats who live in even closer contact with the sea. In fact, they could not conceive of life without it.

The inhabitants of Sulawesi have always had a very close relationship with the sea.
These men belong to the Bugui ethnic group, considered the best boat builders and sailors in the Indian Ocean. But there is another ethnic group which lives in even closer contact with the sea. In fact, they could not conceive of life without it. That group is the Bajau.
At the other end of the island, in the calm waters of the Gulf of Tomini, these nomads have for centuries conquered the sea. They live out their lives on these small, fragile boats called leppas, where they are born, marry, reproduce and die. In them they move along the coast, propelled by the winds and the currents, and rarely set foot on dry land.
Their origins remain unknown, though some anthropologists believe they come from the south of the Malaysian peninsula.
Since then, innumerable legends have surrounded these the Sea Gypsies
They rarely venture far from the coast. Their lives are spent fishing close by the mangrove swamps and the coral reefs. Here, they find almost everything they need.
The Bajau know many different fishing methods, but perhaps the most curious of all is this one, fishing with kites.
The technique they use is simple but very effective. It consists of attaching a hook to the kite, which is made from fern leaves, and with the help of a pole, the fisherman can move the hook as far out as he wants.
The swaying of the kite keeps the bait in constant movement, attracting above all the flying fish.
The government tried to house the first families along the coast, but they were unable to adapt to dry land, and soon returned to their boats. Then, the Bajau suggesting building the village over the sea, and so Torosiaji was born.
Though the greatest number of Bajaus live in Sulawesi, there are also groups of them in Myanmar, where they are called Moken, or ‘the people drowned by the sea’; in Thailand, they are known as the Chao Nam, or ‘water people’, and they can also be found along the coasts of the Philippines and Vietnam. 16:50:00 The mosque and the school are the only buildings in Torosiaji standing on dry land. Well, not exactly dry land, because they have been build on foundations made of coral.
At midday, the waters are very shallow, and this is when the Bajau comb the sea bottom in search of food.
Their basic diet is fish and rice. The rice they buy in the markets on the coast, where once a week the women go to sell the fish they have caught, and buy basic necessities such as fresh water.
The Bajau are also magnificent divers, and can remain underwater for over five minutes, and dive down up to 15 metres.

In Papua New Guinea live a thousand different ethnic groups.
Some tribes practiced cannibalism and other head cut off their enemies. The natives attacked travelers and islands eventually becoming a scary place. The tribes were isolated keep alive their customs and traditions.
In this documentary we will know their kitchen (old pressure cooker), body painting rituals, weapons of war manufactured by themselves, mummification of the bodies of warriors, courtship ceremonies, customs of the crocodile men ...

---
These mysterious lands which seem to rise out of the clouds are the Highlands, in the east of the island of New Guinea, to the north of Australia. The western half of the island is Irian Java, part of Indonesia, and this, the eastern half, is Papua New Guinea. The country includes over 1,400 islands, both large and small
In PNG, as this country is popularly known, there are around a thousand distinct ethnic groups, speaking over eight hundred different languages. The fierce nature of these tribes, the practice of cannibalism and the fact that some groups cut off the heads of their enemies all this made the island a fearful place, which travellers tried to avoid.
This region is very rugged, a series of mountains reaching heights of up to 4,000 metres, and forming numerous valleys of dense vegetation, where the different ethnic groups live practically isolated from each other.
The majority of the villages are inhabited by just one family, or a single clan. The houses are made of bamboo, with rooves of palm leaf. Without a doubt, the rough Highland terrain, and the extremely warlike nature of these tribes, always in conflict with their neighbours, have contributed to the great ethnic variety we still find today.
Each group decorates their bodies in different ways specific, characteristic colours and designs.
They paint themselves for many different ceremonies, but perhaps the most typical is the sing-sing,
a ceremony at which they dance and sing. Sing–sings are organised to celebrate many different things, though some take place on specific days each year, and for these many different tribes come together, arriving from even the most remote villages.
The bird of paradise is now a protected species, and can only be hunted with bow and arrow before the sing-sing. The highlander peoples are proud and maintain their customs and traditions. Despite the daily impact of western influence, they never miss an opportunity to show off their feathers.

The documented history of the Yoruba people begins with the Oyo Empire, which became dominant in the early 17th century. The peoples who lived in Yorubaland, at least by the seventh century BC, were not initially known as the Yoruba, although they shared a common ethnicity and language group. The historical Yoruba develop in situ, out of earlier (Mesolithic) Volta-Niger populations, by the 1st millennium B.C.E. Oral history recorded under the Oyo Empire derives the Yoruba as an ethnic group from the population of the older kingdom of Ile-Ife. Archaeologically, the settlement at Ife can be dated to the 4th century BC, with urban structures appearing in the 12th century (the urban phase of Ife before the rise of Oyo, ca. 1100-1600, is sometimes described as a "golden age" of Ife).

Description: A popular saying among the Dong people in Guizhou Province in southern China has it that rice nourishes the body and songs nourish the soul. Their tradition of passing on culture and knowledge in music is exemplified in the Grand Song of the Dong ethnic group, multi-part singing performed without instrumental accompaniment or a leader. The repertoire includes a range of genres such as ballads, childrens songs, songs of greeting and imitative songs that test performers virtuosity at mimicking the sounds of animals. Taught by masters to choirs of disciples, Grand Songs are performed formally in the drum-tower, the landmark venue for rituals, entertainment and meetings in a Dong village, or more spontaneously in homes or public places. They constitute a Dong encyclopaedia, narrating the peoples history, extolling their belief in the unity of humans and nature, preserving scientific knowledge, expressing feelings of romantic love, and promoting moral values such as respect for ones elders and neighbours. Grand Song is performed widely today, with each village boasting various choirs divided by age and sometimes gender. In addition to disseminating their lifestyle and wisdom, it remains a crucial symbol of Dong ethnic identity and cultural heritage.

The Republic of Buryatia is located in the south-central region of Siberia along the eastern shore of Lake Baikal. Over 80% of the republic's territory is located in the mountainous region, including the Baikal Mountains on the northern shores of Lake Baikal.
The area of the present-day Buryatia was first colonized in the 17th century by Russians in search of wealth, furs, and gold. In 1923, the Buryat-Mongolian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was created as a result of the merger of Buryat-Mongol and Mongol-Buryat Oblasts. In 1937, Aga Buryatia and Ust-Orda Buryatia were detached from the Buryat-Mongolian ASSR and merged with Chita and Irkutsk Oblasts, respectively. In 1958, the name "Mongol" was removed from the name of the republic. The Buryat ASSR declared its sovereignty in 1990 and adopted the name Republic of Buryatia in 1992. However, it remained an autonomous republic within the Russian Federation.
The Buryat Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was an Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in the former Soviet Union.

Sindhis (Sindhi: سنڌي (Perso-Arabic), सिन्धी (Devanagari), Sindhi khudabadi.png (Khudabadi)) are a Sindhi-speaking ethnic group native to the Sindh province of Pakistan.
Sindhi culture is highly influenced by Sufi doctrines and principles. Some of the popular cultural icons are Raja Dahir, Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai, Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, Jhulelal, Sachal Sarmast and Shambumal Tulsiani.
After independence of Pakistan in 1947, most Hindu and Sikh Sindhis migrated to India and other parts of the world, though, in 1998, Hindus constituted about 6% of the Sindhi population in Pakistan.[12][better source needed] Sindhi Hindus believe in tenets of Sikhism but are predominantly Sahajdhari. As a result, this group can be regarded as concurrently following Hinduism and Sikhism. Most of them live in urban areas like Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Mirpur Khas. Hyderabad is the largest centre of Sindhi Hindus in Pakistan with 100,000-150,000 people.[12]
Sindhi is spoken in India, especially in the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. It is spoken in Ulhasnagar, near Mumbai, which is the largest Sindhi Hindu enclave in India. Sindhi is also spoken as a minority language in other countries where communities of Sindhis can be found.

Saman (or the dance of thousand hands) is one of the most popular dances in Indonesia. Its origin is from the Gayo ethnic group from Gayo Lues, Aceh province, Sumatra, and is normally performed to celebrate important occasions. The dance is characterized by its fast-paced rhythm and common harmony between dancers. These two elements are key figures of Saman, and are among the reasons Saman are widely known and practiced in Indonesia, beside being relatively easy to learn.
On November 24, 2011, UNESCO officially recognized Aceh's traditional Saman dance as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, which needs UNESCO's urgent protection.
The ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA) named Saman dance as the best ASEAN cultural preservation effort at the 25th ASEANTA Awards for Excellence 2012.

An ethnicity, or ethnic group, is a socially-defined category of people who identify with each other based on common ancestral, social, cultural, or national experience. Membership of an ethnic group tends to be associated with shared cultural heritage, ancestry, history, homeland, language (dialect), or ideology, and with symbolic systems such as religion, mythology and ritual, cuisine, dressing style, physical appearance, etc.
The largest ethnic groups in modern times can comprise hundreds of millions of individuals (Han Chinese, Arabs, Bengalis) and the smallest can be limited to a few dozen individuals (numerous indigenous peoples worldwide). Larger ethnic groups may be organized into smaller sub-ethnic groups known as tribes, which over time may become separate ethnic groups themselves (a process known as ethnogenesis); ethnic groups derived from the same historical founder population often continue to speak related languages and may be considered to be ethno-linguistic groups (e.g. Iranian peoples, Slavic peoples, Bantu peoples, Turkic peoples, Austronesian peoples, Nilotic peoples, etc.).
