On August 23rd, 1944 a Mosquito aircraft of the 60th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron loaded up with camera and film to fly a long 1,200 mile mission over southern Poland. The aircraft was based at the recently captured Foggia airfield in south-east Italy and the use of this airfield enabled Allied photo-reconnaissance flights to cover much more of occupied Europe than had previously been possible. The mission of this flight was to photograph the I.G. Farben chemical plant near a town called Monowitz, near Krakow in southern Poland. Allied intelligence had picked up evidence that this chemical plant was being expanded in order to produce synthetic oil. As access to the oilfields and refineries of south-eastern Europe was being lost to the Germans, the production of synthetic oil was now crucial for the Nazi war machine. And destroying this petro-chemical industry was becoming a priority for the Allies.

Drone video shows the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp as it is today - 70 years after it was liberated by Soviet troops. The camp in Poland is now maintained as a World Heritage Site and is visited by thousands of tourists and survivors every year. Auschwitz was the largest camp established by the Germans during World War II. More than a million people - the vast majority of them Jews - died there between 1940, when it was built, and 1945, when it was liberated by the Soviet army.
Railway tracks into Auschwitz-Birkenau - Trains filled with victims from throughout occupied Europe arrived at the camp almost every day between 1942 and the summer of 1944.
Ruins of wooden huts at Birkenau - Birkenau (or Auschwitz II) was erected in 1941 solely as a death camp, the wooden huts are now in ruins with only brick fireplaces and chimneys remaining.
Entrance to Auschwitz I -The wrought-iron sign over the entrance bears the words Arbeit Macht Frei - "Work sets you free".
Auschwitz I - The brick-built buildings were the former cavalry barracks of the Polish Army.
Courtyard between blocks 10 and 11 at Auschwitz I - Block 11 was called "the Block of Death" by prisoners. Executions took place between Block 10 and Block 11 and posts in the yard were used to string up prisoners by their wrists.
Auschwitz Birkenau is now a museum run by the Polish Culture Ministry, and a Unesco world heritage site.

Warning - This historical documentary contains some explicit Scenes that are of a violent nature and may be disturbing to some viewers!
This Film contains footage taken by Soviet cameramen after the liberation of the Auschwitz camp in January 27, 1945.
Among other things, it depicts the camp area immediately after entry by the First Ukrainian Front of the Red Army.
Documentary pictures are interspersed with an interview with Alexander Vorontzov, the cameraman who accompanied the Red Army soldiers and did most of the filming. The whole is accompanied by commentary describing, among others, the selection and extermination process, medical experiments and everyday life in the Auschwitz concentration camp.
The film was previously released in 1985, for the 40th anniversary of the liberation of the camp. The commentary accompanying the current edition of the film reflects the latest findings
by researchers studying the KL Auschwitz.
The Auschwitz Camp is a world symbol to the Holocaust, genocide and terror. Never before in the history of mankind were so many people murdered in a planned and industrial manner in such a small area.
In the years 1940-1945, German Nazis brought here over a million Jews, nearly 150 thousand Poles, 23 thousand Roma, 15 thousand Soviet prisoners of war and over ten thousand prisoners from other nations.
A vast majority of them perished in the camp.
This film is dedicated to their memory.
Runtime: 52 minutes, Production year: 1985, Director: Irmgard von zur Muehlen

Some died in medical experiments, some by summary execution, many by starvation, but most died by systematic killings in extermination camps built by the Nazi government in Germany and in German-control

This is one large video compilation of the trip put together, I'll upload individual videos of each places soon. This was m y first trip away and all though I enjoyed it, it was an absolute disaster as well lol Firstly I couldn't get the hire car I had payed for, ruining 90% of my plans which was a lot of abandoned buildings. So I only managed the tour side of things, visiting the Wieliczka Salt Mine and Auschwitz Concentration Camp.Being tours it was hard to get decent footage as I was rushed in keeping up with the rest of the group, so this is the best I could do. Second disaster was the bank machine taking my card, leaving me with hardly any money for the first 3 nights. Being alone this wasn't the most pleasant thing that has ever happened to me. Despite those issues, I had a great time. I stayed in Krakow which is an amazing city! And I have to say the Polish woman are quite nice to look at too hehe. I'll hopefully return soon in a couple of months and retry the Urbex side of things. I kept passing by abandoned places in the bus and taxis and it was torture being unable to go in them, so next time I'll make sure I get the hire car! Hope you guys enjoy! :-)

Recorded on 23 May 2015 at Auschwitz II (Birkenau), official Auschwitz guide Ewa Pasterak and Auschwitz survivor Elzbieta Sobczynska explain why the Nazis built the Birkenau concentration camp. Initially, as they describe, it was not constructed as an extermination camp but as a source of cheap labor for the IG Farben pharmaceutical and chemical Cartel. The Buna industrial plant, known as IG Auschwitz, was a 100% subsidiary of IG Farben and was located about 6 kilometers from Auschwitz in the direction of Krakow.

A visit to Auschwitz Concentration-Extermination Camp 2014-05-14

About 11 million victims, mostly Jews, and also Romanis, homosexuals, to name a few groups of human beings, were unilaterally determined by Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler to be unworthy of living. Some died in medical experiments, some by summary execution, many by starvation, but most died by systematic killings in extermination camps built by the Nazi government in Germany and in German-controlled territories in the early 1940s. The number killed in the complex Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau in Nazi-occupied Poland topped the number systematically killed.
This video contains three parts:
1. Minibus travel from Krakow in southern Poland to Auschwitz (Oświęcim in Polish), during which a video introducing the camp's operation is shown to passengers on the minibus.
2. Visit to Auschwitz I: mostly outdoors; some indoor locations, for example, gas chambers built early on, and in mate latrine facilities; this is followed by a half hour break for the visitor to feed and recuperate before moving to the intensity of Auschwitz II-Birkenau, the second part of the tour.
3. Visit to Auschwitz II & Birkenau (the "Arbeit mach frei" gate, sentencing room, gas chambers built on a large scale later on, victims' personal property ...). This part of the tour is mostly indoors, where the guide's narrative is transmitted to each visitor through a wireless headset for greater efficiency; due to the distance between the headset and the camera microphone, it is not possible for all comments to be recorded on the sound track of the video.

Extensive scholarship in print and on video on the Holocaust and extermination camps exist. This video is to document one visitor's experience from the time of departure from Krakow, a major "staging city" today for the visit. The visit requires, at a minimum, half a day, followed perhaps by a lifetime of contemplation over the liabilities and the responsibilities of being human.
