Once one of Australia's busiest ports, Maryborough, located in the Australian state of Queensland, is now better known as a place of significant cultural heritage sites, with well-maintained colonial streets and historical buildings. The only outbreak of Pneumonic Plague in Australia occurred in Maryborough, when, in 1905, a freighter ship from Hong Kong (which itself had an outbreak) docked in the port, and a wharf worker took some sacking home for his children to sleep on. The plague was contained to one household, and now the population of Maryborough is 21,501 people.
The city's economy is supported by tourism and engineering, in particular Downer Rail, which builds many of Queensland Rail's trains, as well as ships. Maryborough experiences a maximum temperature of 26.9 °C per year and a minimum temperature of 15.3 °C.
The author of Mary Poppins, P.L. Travers, was born in Maryborough in 1899.
