Most of us visualize emissions generated by human activity - such as power plants and cars - when we think about climate disruption. But is it possible that HUMANITY MAY NOW BE CONFRONTED BY A SOURCE OF CARBON *FOUR TIMES* LARGER THAN ALL WHICH HAS BEEN GENERATED BY HUMANS SINCE THE START OF THE INDUSTRIAL AGE ? Climate scientists call it a "ticking time bomb" and the most threatening yet under-reported story of our time. "Over hundreds of millennia, Arctic permafrost soils have accumulated vast stores of organic carbon - an estimated 1,400 to 1,850 billion metric tons of it...... In comparison, about 350 billion metric tons of carbon have been emitted from all fossil-fuel combustion and human activities since 1850." (NASA press release, June 2013)
Human-caused temperature rise in the Arctic is beginning to release this "sleeping giant". The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - made this stunning projection: "By the end of the 21st century, the area of permafrost near the surface is projected to decrease by between 37% to 81%." NASA: "Expert opinion says that approximately by 2040 as much as 20 to 50 billion metric tons of the carbon that is currently frozen in the permafrost soils might become available. By 2100 those estimates range from 160 to 250 billion metric tons. So by the end of the century, you might have a perturbation (impact) that would be almost as much as all of the fossil fuel carbon that's been released since 1850 or so." (Dr. Charles Miller, lead scientist, NASA's CARVE program)
Super greenhouse gas methane is a full 100 times more powerful than CO2 as a heat-trapping gas in the first 20 years after release. WHAT HAPPENS IF THIS MASSIVE AND POWERFUL VOLUME OF GREENHOUSE GAS IS ADDED ON TOP OF WHAT HUMANITY IS ALREADY GENERATING? Disruption would become vastly accelerated and kicked into higher gear. This immense release would feed on itself, raising temperatures that continue melting more and more permafrost in a vicious, frightening, and unstoppable cycle. A tipping point could well be crossed, and human intervention no longer possible. Temperatures across the planet could soar, with catastrophic levels of drought and food shortage. All life support systems could be placed under severe stress.
NEWS MEDIA, AND EVEN THE CLIMATE MOVEMENT ITSELF, ARE MISSING BOTH THE SCALE AND IMMINENCE OF THE PERMAFROST THREAT - The dominant focus has been human-generated emissions, as in the conflict over tar sands oil. But a huge story is not getting through - an even deeper and more profound urgency yet to be recognized. These emissions threaten to release a far larger and more menacing source that dwarfs what humanity is generating. And this upsurge cannot be relegated to a far-off future - the IPCC is talking about the end of this century.
When world-renowned climate expert Dr. James Hansen was asked about the impact that could result from large scale release of greenhouse gases in the Arctic, he replied: "It's not clear that civilization could survive that extreme of a climate change." Even if such cannot be predicted with absolute certainty, the colossal scale of the danger - and the observation of those factors lining up that could trigger it - demand that humanity exercise the precautionary principle. All political decision-making related to carbon emissions must be based on the understanding that a catastrophic consequence is looming, and the window of time for prevention quickly diminishing.

Scientists are increasingly concerned about the potential for permafrost to thaw in a warming world. This permanently frozen layer of earth contains huge amounts of methane that could exacerbate climate change if the gas leaches into the atmosphere.
To help study the issue, the US Army Corp of Engineers has built a tunnel into permafrost near Fairbanks, Alaska. It allows researchers to travel back in time to see how permafrost impacted the Earth over the past 40,000 years. BBC environment correspondent Matt McGrath travelled with them.

In geology, permafrost or cryotic soil is soil at or below the freezing point of water 0 °C (32 °F) for two or more years. Most permafrost is located in high latitudes (i.e. land close to the North and South poles), but alpine permafrost may exist at high altitudes in much lower latitudes. Ice is not always present, as may be in the case of nonporous bedrock, but it frequently occurs and it may be in amounts exceeding the potential hydraulic saturation of the ground material. Permafrost accounts for 0.022% of total water and exists in 24% of exposed land in the Northern Hemisphere.
The extent of permafrost varies with the climate. Today, a considerable area of the Arctic is covered by permafrost (including discontinuous permafrost). Overlying permafrost is a thin active layer that seasonally thaws during the summer. Plant life can be supported only within the active layer since growth can occur only in soil that is fully thawed for some part of the year. Thickness of the active layer varies by year and location, but is typically 0.6–4 m (2.0–13 ft) thick. In areas of continuous permafrost and harsh winters the depth of the permafrost can be as much as 1,493 m (4,898 ft) in the northern Lena and Yana River basins in Siberia. Permafrost can also store carbon, both as peat and as methane. The most recent work investigating the permafrost carbon pool size estimates that 1400–1700 Gt of carbon is stored in permafrost soils worldwide. This large carbon pool represents more carbon than currently exists in all living things and twice as much carbon as exists in the atmosphere.

Most of us visualize emissions generated by human activity - such as power plants and cars - when we think about climate disruption. But is it possible that HUMANITY MAY NOW BE CONFRONTED BY A SOURCE OF CARBON *FOUR TIMES* LARGER THAN ALL WHICH HAS BEEN GENERATED BY HUMANS SINCE THE START OF THE INDUSTRIAL AGE ? Climate scientists call it a "ticking time bomb" and the most threatening yet under-reported story of our time. "Over hundreds of millennia, Arctic permafrost soils have accumulated vast stores of organic carbon - an estimated 1,400 to 1,850 billion metric tons of it...... In comparison, about 350 billion metric tons of carbon have been emitted from all fossil-fuel combustion and human activities since 1850." (NASA press release, June 2013)
Human-caused temperature rise in the Arctic is beginning to release this "sleeping giant". The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - made this stunning projection: "By the end of the 21st century, the area of permafrost near the surface is projected to decrease by between 37% to 81%." NASA: "Expert opinion says that approximately by 2040 as much as 20 to 50 billion metric tons of the carbon that is currently frozen in the permafrost soils might become available. By 2100 those estimates range from 160 to 250 billion metric tons. So by the end of the century, you might have a perturbation (impact) that would be almost as much as all of the fossil fuel carbon that's been released since 1850 or so." (Dr. Charles Miller, lead scientist, NASA's CARVE program)
Super greenhouse gas methane is a full 100 times more powerful than CO2 as a heat-trapping gas in the first 20 years after release. WHAT HAPPENS IF THIS MASSIVE AND POWERFUL VOLUME OF GREENHOUSE GAS IS ADDED ON TOP OF WHAT HUMANITY IS ALREADY GENERATING? Disruption would become vastly accelerated and kicked into higher gear. This immense release would feed on itself, raising temperatures that continue melting more and more permafrost in a vicious, frightening, and unstoppable cycle. A tipping point could well be crossed, and human intervention no longer possible. Temperatures across the planet could soar, with catastrophic levels of drought and food shortage. All life support systems could be placed under severe stress.
NEWS MEDIA, AND EVEN THE CLIMATE MOVEMENT ITSELF, ARE MISSING BOTH THE SCALE AND IMMINENCE OF THE PERMAFROST THREAT - The dominant focus has been human-generated emissions, as in the conflict over tar sands oil. But a huge story is not getting through - an even deeper and more profound urgency yet to be recognized. These emissions threaten to release a far larger and more menacing source that dwarfs what humanity is generating. And this upsurge cannot be relegated to a far-off future - the IPCC is talking about the end of this century.
When world-renowned climate expert Dr. James Hansen was asked about the impact that could result from large scale release of greenhouse gases in the Arctic, he replied: "It's not clear that civilization could survive that extreme of a climate change." Even if such cannot be predicted with absolute certainty, the colossal scale of the danger - and the observation of those factors lining up that could trigger it - demand that humanity exercise the precautionary principle. All political decision-making related to carbon emissions must be based on the understanding that a catastrophic consequence is looming, and the window of time for prevention quickly diminishing.

JOBSITE EXPERIENCE IN RUSSIA
Project details
The job site is located about fifty kilometers from Novyj Urengoj, which is the center of extraction of Russia (approximately 68% of gas and 45% of oil of the entire Russia come from that region).
The project entails the creation of a 1,000 km-pipeline from Novjy Urengoj to a location close to Surgut. Pipe diameter is 18’’ with the TRS 1075 digging at 8 ft (2.44 m) deep. Before the arrival of the TRS 1075, drills and explosives were used with excavators cleaning the site.
However, this process was slow, expensive in the long term, and inaccurate regarding digging dimensions and directions.
Criticalities of the project
Actual temperatures ranged between -35 C and -45 C, with peaks at -55C. Due to the marshy nature of the land surrounding the right-of-way , it is necessary to conduct digging operations when the surface and the marshland are completely frozen.
Considering the soil conditions and the frequent change of season, which affects the properties of the soil, it requires an excavation of about 1.8 meters for the laying of a 18” pipe in order to avoid the risk of breaches/cracks in the pipe caused by the movement of the pipe itself once laid underground.
***Advantages of Tesmec machines***
Thanks to Tesmec bucket wheel trencher, different goals have been achieved:
• Productivity of up to 400m/h.
The trencher cuts the minimum required ditch width and yields less cubic meters dug for each linear meter of production.
• Possibility of executing a double cut (two parallel excavations) and finishing the digging operations using just three machines: one trencher, one bulldozer to smooth the way for the trencher and one excavator to cover the first dig and later reopen the implemented double dig. This also includes Logistic and
Environmental advantages.
• Perfection excavation (“rectangular” type, with well established
measures and not of “V” type such as that one made by the excavators with inaccuracy), and consequently less material moved.
Restoration of ditch is easier and less expensive than excavators because a vertical wall trench requires less backfill material than a “V” wall excavator trench.

This video shows Matthias Siewert and Gustaf Hugelius sampling permafrost affected soils on Qikiqtaruk–Herschel Island, Canada. First we remove the top organic layer, then we excavate the active layer. Photos are taken and a description of the soil pit is made. Then the active layer is sampled. To sample the permafrost a steel pipe is hammered into the ground. After the sampling is completed we restore the site to leave as little trace as possible. In this case, the entire process took 44 minutes.

A numerical model called SpongeBOB is used to simulate the hydrology and methane cycle on the Siberian continental shelf. Lowered sea level during glacial time exposed the sediment surface to the cold atmosphere, forming permafrost to a depth of a kilometre or more. Now in the interglacial time the permafrost is flooded by higher sea level, leading to its eventual melting. The model is used to predict how the glacial cycles, and future global warming, affect the methane budget of this area. The model predicts that methane hydrate is only stable near the bottom of the permafrost zone, hundreds of metres below the sediment surface. The hydrates are insulated from any rapid change in temperature that might occur in the overlying ocean. There is enough carbon in frozen sediments in the Arctic to drive a substantial carbon release in response to climate warming, but only on time scales of thousands of years.
