More general views of the US camp with American soldiers STORYLINE: As part of the Bush administration's efforts to defeat global terrorism, nearly two thousand US troops have been stationed in the Horn of Africa. 18 months ago, a counter-terrorism task force was set up in Djibouti under the command of US Marine Brigadier General Mastin Robeson. He says they're there to track down the many al-Qaida operatives who are believed to be active in the African continent, having fled Afghanistan after the massive US military campaign two years ago. The CJTF-HOA (Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa) actions are part of Operation Enduring Freedom. The CJTF-Horn of Africa region covers the airspace and land areas of Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Yemen and Ethiopia and the coastal waters of the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean. Djibouti provides the American troops with key access and infrastructure to the countries engaged in counter-terrorism operations across this part of Africa. General Robeson says his troops are cooperating very closely with the over three thousand French military personnel permanently based in Djibouti. The two forces are regularly training together, especially with the French Foreign Legion, at the French Commando Training Centre in Alta-Plage. They also exchange intelligence and information. The American troops are stationed in Camp Lemonnier, near the airport of Djibouti. This camp is a former French Foreign Legion post owned by the Djibouti government.
