Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941) - Ingrid Bergman Lana Turner Spencer Tracy - Trailer no audio
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a 1941 horror film starring Spencer Tracy, Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner. Rather than being a new film version of the novel, it is a direct remake of the 1931 film of the same title, which differs greatly from the novel, due to both film's heavy dependence on the Thomas Sullivan stage version. The movie was based on Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella the Strange Case

Lydia Suite from the 1941 film 'Lydia' composed by Miklós Rózsa
(arranged for the piano four-hands by Panayotis Archontides)
Having started off as a composer for the concert hall, Miklós Rózsa turned to film music at the suggestion of his friend and colleague Arthur Honegger.
His first two projects in Hollywood were done in collaboration with the producer Alexander Korda, and the films, The Thief of Bagdad (1940) and Jungle Book (1942) became an instant success for both men. One of the reasons the music was successful was due to the fact that Rózsa, being a musicologist and teacher, always engaged in painstaking research. This would eventually make him a specialist in films depicting historical, biblical, or ethnic subjects (Ben-Hur, El Cid, Quo Vadis, Ivanhoe, Knights of the Round Table, King of Kings are just some of his masterpieces).
The music for Thief and Jungle Book is presented here in the Exotic Suite for four-hands (comprising of the Procession, followed by Eternal Love and excerpts from Jungle Book). The audience immediately gets the taste of the Middle-east and the orient through the composer's utilisation of the scales of the region (pentatonic scales and whole-tone scales). This was a bold move, since most of the film music of the 1930s and 1940s stemmed from 19th century Viennese traditional harmonies (the major and minor tonalities of the scores of Max Steiner, Franz Waxman and others).
Lydia shows a more traditional side to the composer. The musical treatment is carried out in homage to Franz Liszt (notice the character of the third movement -- Sleigh Ride -- which resembles a Hungarian Rhapsody).

Command Performance is a radio program which originally aired between 1942 and 1949. The program was broadcast on the Armed Forces Radio Network (AFRS) with a direct shortwave transmission to the troops overseas. It was not broadcast over domestic U.S. radio stations. Troops sent in requests for a particular performer or program to appear, and they also suggested unusual ideas for music and sketches on the program, such as Ann Miller tap dancing in military boots. Top performers of the day appeared, including Jack Benny, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Fred Allen, Ginger Rogers, Judy Garland and The Andrews Sisters.

In 1937, filming began on "I, Claudius," from the Robert Graves novel, with Charles Laughton in the title role. The cast also included Merle Oberon, Flora Robson, Emlyn Williams and Robert Newton. Producer Alexander Korda hired Josef von Sternberg to direct but once the cameras started rolling it became evident that Laughton was having great difficulty in getting into his part. Matters went from bad to worse, so that when Merle Oberon was involved in a car crash and hospitalised for several weeks, it was looked on, in Emlyn Williams's words, "as a godsend" and the film was abandoned altogether.
In 1965, the BBC investigated this unfinished project in a documentary narrated by Dirk Bogarde entitled 'The Epic That Never Was.' The surviving participants (including Oberon, Williams, Robson and von Sternberg) were interviewed and several of the finished scenes were shown. Also shown were the fascinating rushes and out-takes in which Laughton forgot his lines or stormed off the set. It is clear from what has survived that had he been able to bring off another great performance, this could have been another of his classic 1930s movies. However, we must be grateful for what has survived in this excellent and remarkable documentary.

Hotel (1967 Film) Pete's French Quarter Apartment With Jeanne
Released by Warner Bros. on January 19, 1967 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The copyright for this film is owned by Warner Bros. Pictures and The Warner Group. There is no intent to infringe upon that copyright. Indeed, this video is for the purpose of creating enough public interest to encourage Warner Bros. to re-release the film.
There is an inexcusable error in both the opening and closing credits; Carmen McRae's name is incorrectly spelled as "MacRae". Her performances, alone, are worth the price of admission. The song, "Bourbon Street", prominently featured here. is played throughout the film and was composed and conducted by Johnny Keating. It is the haunting jazz melody of this song that stayed with me throughout the years since I saw the film in 1967, as well as the beauty of Catherine Spaak.
HOTEL is not a good film; it is an outstanding film. Yet, it lost more than $650,000 at the box office. One may ask why a film so good lost so much money and the answer is simple; the film was released either a year or two too late, or a decade or two too early. HOTEL was one of the last, if not the last film, to have a complete all-star cast. But, the interests of younger audiences had changed and other 1967 films (it was a bumper year for film releases) had changed to films with new stars such as BONNIE AND CLYDE and THE GRADUATE, and other films like THE DIRTY DOZEN. The viewer is directed to the review of the film by Bosley Crowther in the New York Times in this link: http://www.nytimes.com/movie/review?r...
Directed by Richard Quine; Written and Produced by Wendell Mayes; Musical Score and Original Songs by Johnnie Keating; Costumes by Howard Shoup; Gowns by Edith Head; Based on the novel HOTEL by Alex Hailey. Starring: Rod Taylor as Peter McDermott, Catherine Spaak as Jeanne Rochefort, Karl Malden as Keycase Milne, Melvyn Douglas as Warren Trent, Richard Conte as Det. Dupere, Merle Oberon as the Duchess Caroline, Michael Rennie as the Duke of Lanbourne, Kevin McCarthy as Curtis O'Keefe, Alfred Ryder as Capt. Yolles, Roy Roberts as Bailey(Head Desk Cerk), Al Checco as Herbie Chandler, Sheila Bromley as Mrs. Grandin, Harry Hickox as Sam, William Lanteau as Mason, Ken Lynch as Joe Laswell, Clinton Sundberg as Lawrence Morgan,Tol Avery as Kilbrick, Davis Roberts as Dr. Elmo Adams, And A Special Appearance by Carmen McRae (as Christine) and her band.
Some interesting trivia: Roy Robbins played a similar role two decades earlier in the 1947 Academy Award winning film, GENTELEMEN’S AGREEMENT, turning Gregory Peck away because he was Jewish; HOTEL was so great a failure that it inspired a highly successful NBC TV Series titled HOTEL that ran from 1983 through 1988, moving the hotel from New Orleans to San Francisco; Karl Malden as the hotel thief Keycase Milne said in both his autobiography and in several interviews that he enjoyed that role more than any other he played because his entire role had virtually no dialogue but was highly successful. Indeed, Malden had a smile or grin throughout the film that, while he did not invent the acronym, he gave clear definition to S.E.G.; Warner Bros. spent a great deal of money to bring Catherine Spaak to Bubank, only to lose her when the film failed to make money, as she returned to Paris to continue her highly successful career as both an actress and vocalist. Her official site shows, prominently, the hat she wore when she had lunch in the film with Rod Taylor at Pat O’Brien’s in New Orleans; Merle Oberon wore her own jewels in the film, featuring a broche that had once belonged to Marie Antoinette. Her jewel collection was valued at about $325,000 in 1967, multiply by 7.1 for current dollars. Despite all this, Taylor rates this movie as one of the least favorite of his career: "It made a lot of people a lot of money, but personally I didn't like "Hotel. 'I was so restricted I could not be my usual gregarious self. I was so stiff, I hated myself in that'".-- TV Times (Australia), Dec. 18, 1976 But the critics felt otherwise; Rod Taylor's performance received rave reviews. Taylor always underestimated his dramatic skills. Rod Taylor passed away on January 7 this year...Rest In Peace Rod Taylor, May The Grace Of G-d Be With You.
