Eng/Hindi/Nat
A small Jewish community living in the Indian city of Bombay is learning to come to terms with its shrinking population.
The community's numbers are dwindling fast, as most of the young Jews have migrated to Israel.
But for the older generation Jews, uprooting a link that dates back 2000 years is not easy.
They continue to live in the shadow of the past, in the hope their history in India will not fade away entirely.
A traditional way to herald the Jewish new year.
For the Jewish community living in the western Indian city of Bombay, it's also a time to look back on fond memories of years gone by.
Their memories are of times when the synagogue was filled with Jews, both young and old.
The history of this Jewish settlement in India dates back more than 2000 years.
The community includes Baghdad Jews living in Calcutta, White Jews who have settled in Cochin, as well as this congregation in Bombay.
Today, the once 25-thousand strong community which settled in various parts of India has dwindled to about one-fifth of its size.
About two-thousand of them now live in Bombay, while most of the young Jews have migrated to Israel.
Those who are still here say it's a spiritual call that beckons the Jews to their Holy Land.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
\"It is written in our Bible that from all over the world Jews will come together to Israel, and one time will come, you see, when all the Jews will go there.\"
SUPER CAPTION: Abrahim Samson, Indian Jew
As elsewhere in the world, it is religion that has kept the community bound closely together.
Synagogues and prayer halls are centres for social interaction and get-togethers.
Concern about widespread migration of the young is often reflected in pleas published in the newspapers.
Ancestors of Jews living in Bombay were known as Bene Israelis, meaning the children of Israel.
The Bene Israelis have brown skins, unlike the White Jews of Cochin.
The desire to keep the ethnic identity of the community intact has meant few inter-religious marriages.
Jonathan Daniel, who works for Israeli Airlines in Bombay, says the search for better prospects and suitable life partners drives most young Jews to Israel.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
\"It is restricted. We don't usually go outcaste because if you want to marry outcaste you have to convert her to the Jewish religion and then we marry her.\"
SUPER CAPTION: Jonathan Daniel Chewoolkar, Indian Jew
Bombay's minority Jews have assimilated themselves well into the local Indian culture.
They speak fluent Marathi - the local language - even though learning Hebrew is still a must.
The attire for the Jewish women is the Indian sari, just like their Hindu counterparts.
But cultural assimilation remains strictly within the parameters set by the Jewish religion.
Religious rites and rituals are practised in the traditional manner, and the ethnic signature of the community remains distinct.
Conscious of the historical persecution of the Jewish race in many parts of the world, Jews in India say the country's policy of religious tolerance is largely responsible for their long history in an alien land.
SOUNDBITE: (Hindi)
\"There are no restrictions on us in practising our religion here. We have adopted a few things from India but only those permitted by
our religion.\"
SUPER CAPTION: Gabriel Abrahim Galsovrkar, Indian Jew
Every new year for the Jews in India brings with it the growing reality of their dwindling numbers.
The occasion of Jewish new year is traditionally heralded by offering prayers at the ferry wharf in Bombay.
It is believed that praying near the sea will rid the community of all its ills.

Visitors at the Maison des Metallos cultural centre in Paris took time to view the 'Doctors Without Borders' (MSF) exhibition 'In Between Wars', an expo dedicated to the daily life in the State of Palestine, despite coming under fire by prominent leaders in the French Jewish community.
Roger Cukierman, the president of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France (CRIF) attacked the exhibition on twitter, calling for French authorities, who fund the space, to shut the exhibition down, saying it glorifies so-called 'terrorists'. The president of Doctors without Borders Mego Terzian has said while he understands the controversial nature of the expo, he thought Cukierman irresponsible and his accusations "unacceptable."

Devorah Stubin, 22, of Passaic, was last seen Thursday night in Maywood Township driving a gray Mitsubishi Galant, according to New Jersey State Police.
Woman Accused of Fatally Stabbing Boyfriend Claims Self-Defense
A car was located late Saturday afternoon in the Passaic River in Wallington. Scuba divers were dispatched to the scene and identified the car and a body presumed to be Stubin.
The car apparently crashed through a fence behind a funeral home and plunged into the river.

More than 100 people, many of them members of the Orthodox Jewish community, had gather early Saturday to search for her. Many broke the Sabbath to conduct the search because a life was at stake, they said.

WALLINGTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — The car of a 22-year-old New Jersey woman who has been missing since Thursday night has been pulled from the Passaic River and authorities said a body was found inside.
CBS2 video shows Devorah Stubin’s 1998 gray Mitsubishi Galant being lifted out of the water around 8 p.m. Saturday after it somehow wound up submerged in the river in Wallington.
“It is in fact a vehicle that has been missing from Passaic and there was a person in the vehicle,” said Wallington Police Capt. Kim Lucas.
“We sent divers into the water, ” said Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino. “They were able to grab the license plate and, sadly, it was determined that it’s the license plate of the young lady.”
It was devastating news for the volunteer searchers from the tight-knit Orthodox Jewish community.
“We are broken by it,” said volunteer Moshe Jacobitz. “It’s a close community, a small community. Everyone knows the family. Everyone is very heartbroken.”
Lucas said officers were led to the scene after getting a call about some property damage to a fence behind a funeral home.
“When the officer arrived, he felt that because there was some vehicle debris there, that possibly something occurred,” she said.
Just beyond the fence is a 15-foot embankment and the car was found in about 10 feet of water, 1010 WINS’ Carol D’Auria reported.
The Passaic woman, who suffers from an epilepsy-like seizure disorder, disappeared Thursday night.
She was on her way to pick up her brother when she was stopped by Maywood police for driving without headlights at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday. She told the officer she was lost and he tried to point her in the right direction.
But somehow Stubin wound up in nearby Wallington and apparently drove right though the fence behind the funeral home, her car plunging down the embankment and landing upside down in the river below, CBS2’s Brian Conybeare reported.
In an exclusive interview, funeral home owner Brian Warner told CBS2 he heard something at about 9:15 p.m. Thursday.
When asked by Conybeare if he thought that noise was a car going through the fence and into the river, Warner said, “Yes, I have no doubt.”
Warner said he looked around after hearing that noise Thursday night but didn’t notice the damaged fence until 3 p.m. Saturday.
Lucas said they have not yet determined exactly why the car went into the river.
“All we can do from here on in is expand our camera search and see if perhaps we can see the vehicle coming into the area to give us a better idea of when this occurred,” she said.
Police are awaiting official confirmation on the identity of the body.

On May 21, the late Robert N. Bellah, Rabbi David Ellenson, and Toby Rubin sat down with Ari Kelman for a fascinating panel discussion about the value of the Jewish community. Each brought a different perspective on how community is valued, and offered a diversity of opinions in how he or she engages in questions of value in his or her work. The discussion was particularly interesting around the issue of free vs. fee based programs, trends in philanthropy and institutional giving, and how people make meaning in their lives vis-à-vis community.

Speaking at the Woodrow Wilson Center on October 22, 2014, author Roya Hakakian describes the existential threats faced by Iran's Jews since the establishment of the Islamic Republic. Analyzing a meeting between Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and representatives of the Iranian Jewish community in 1979, Hakakian demonstrates that Khomeini's distinction between Iranian Jews and Zionists spared the community from attack by Islamic revolutionaries. Yet despite professed policies of tolerance toward Jews, Hakakian illustrates how Iran's theocratic government has systematically repressed Jews and other religious minorities. Seeing past the regime's use of the Jewish community to deflect accusations of anti-Semitism, Hakakian explains: "Nothing is more telling about Iran and the regime's conduct than the way it has dealt with the Jewish community since 1979."
