With this mission, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket will deliver the Jason-3 satellite to low-Earth orbit for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), French space agency Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT).
The Jason-3 launch is targeted for a 18:42 UTC launch from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. If all goes as planned, the Jason-3 satellite will be deployed approximately an hour after launch.
This mission also marks an experimental landing of the first stage on the SpaceX drone ship “Just Read the Instructions”. The landing of the first stage is a secondary test objective.

The very last SpaceX Falcon 9 v1.1 rocket lifted off today from Space Launch Complex 4 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, January 17th 2016 at 18:42 UTC. The rocket carried Jason 3 satellite into orbit, Jason 3 is a joint mission between NASA, NOAA, CNES EUMETSAT and will monitor sea surface levels from space.
This was a historic launch for SpaceX, being the final 1.1 version of the Falcon 9 to launch, launching from the exact pad that the very first v1.1 Falcon 9 launched from back in September 2013.
After liftoff, the first stage shut down and separated from the second stage before firing its engines again and attempting a landing on an unmanned barge named 'Just Read the Instructions'. This attempt unfortunately was not successful. The Falcon had to perform a barge landing rather than on land at Vandenberg for environmental reasons for this mission.

Jason-3 is the newest in a series of satellites designed to maintain long-term satellite altimetry observations of global sea surface height. These data provide critical ocean information that forecasters need to predict devastating hurricanes and severe weather before they arrive onshore. Over the long term, Jason-3 will help us to track global sea level rise, an increasing threat to the resilience of coastal communities and to the health of our environment. The mission is a partnership between NASA, NOAA, Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales, France’s space agency, and the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites.

Jason-3
Jason-3 is an international Earth observation satellite mission that continues the sea surface height measurements begun in 1992 by the joint NASA/CNES TOPEX/Poseidon mission, followed by the NASA/CNES Jason-1 mission launched in 2001 and Jason-2 mission in 2008.
History
Jason-3 was originally planned for launch on July 22, 2015. However, this date was pushed back to August 19 following the discovery of contamination in one of the satellite's thrusters, requiring the thruster to be replaced and further inspected. The launch was further delayed following the failure of a Falcon 9 rocket on the SpaceX CRS-7 mission. The satellite was launched on January 17, 2016, in Falcon 9 Flight 21, aboard the final Falcon 9 v1.1 rocket.

With this mission, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket will deliver the Jason-3 satellite to low-Earth orbit for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), French space agency Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT).
The Jason-3 launch is targeted for a 18:42 UTC launch from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. If all goes as planned, the Jason-3 satellite will be deployed approximately an hour after launch.
This mission also marks an experimental landing of the first stage on the SpaceX drone ship “Just Read the Instructions”. The landing of the first stage is a secondary test objective.

As humans drive Earth's climate into a new regime, it is critical to keep our fingers on the pulse of the planet. Sea level rise is both a stark reminder of our impact on the climate and its impact on us. The oceans capture over 90 percent of the heat trapped by greenhouse gases, expanding as they warm. Le 17 janvier, depuis la base de Vandenberg en Calfornie, Space X lance un satellite développé par le CNES et la NASA. Il permettra d’accroître la précision des mesures océanographiques et de transmettre des données précises aux chercheurs. Prévu pour le mois de juin l’année dernière, le lancement a été reporté à cause d’un problème techniques, mais cette fois, les conditions météorologiques devraient être idéales pour ce lancement. Jason-3 satellite mission that measures the height of the ocean surface is scheduled to be launched on January 17 in California.
The spacecraft will be encapsulated into a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and the operation will take place in Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
The operation, started by the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite mission in 1992 and followed by Jason-1 in 2001 and OSTM/Jason-2 in 2008, will allow scientists to study global changes in the sea level and climate variations.

Jason-3 is the newest in a series of satellites designed to maintain long-term satellite altimetry observations of global sea surface height. During its mission -- planned to last at least three years, with a goal of five years – the satellite will monitor and precisely measure global sea surface heights, monitor the intensification of tropical cyclones and support seasonal and coastal forecasts. Jason-3 is a partnership between NASA, NOAA, Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales, France’s space agency, and the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites.

As humans drive Earth's climate into a new regime, it is critical to keep our fingers on the pulse of the planet. Sea level rise is both a stark reminder of our impact on the climate and its impact on us. The oceans capture over 90 percent of the heat trapped by greenhouse gases, expanding as they warm. They also collect water from melting glaciers and ice sheets, making sea level rise a doubly important indicator of global warming. Without adaptation, a 2-meter rise would displace 187 million people worldwide. Sea level will continue to rise, but how fast? Like its predecessors, Jason-3 will serve as our eyes on sea level rise. Measuring global sea level once every 10 days, it will chart out the global rise of the oceans--a rise that is unlikely to subside or reverse for generations. But Jason-3 will be more than a sentinel of climate change. It will also measure the tilt of the ocean surface providing oceanographers with information about ocean currents, measure wind and waves helping forecasters predict marine weather, and even find local warm spots that can intensify hurricanes.
