Jason-3 is an international Earth observation satellite mission that continues the sea surface height measurements begun in 1992 by the joint NASA/CNES TOPEX/Poseidon mission, followed by the NASA/CNES Jason-1 mission launched in 2001 and Jason-2 mission in 2008.
Jason-3 was originally planned for launch on July 22, 2015. However, this date was pushed back to August 19 following the discovery of contamination in one of the satellite's thrusters, requiring the thruster to be replaced and further inspected. The launch was further delayed following the failure of a Falcon 9 rocket on the SpaceX CRS-7 mission. The satellite was launched on January 17, 2016, in Falcon 9 Flight 21, aboard the final Falcon 9 v1.1 rocket.
The science objectives for Jason-3 are:
Waking up in this empty town again
Spring semester was slow, but it finally came to an end
It's been a couple months since I've seen your face
And oh how I'm longing for your warm embrace
Don't know if I can keep this up
3 months of love, it just ain't enough
Hate that its come down to an all or nothing
I'm not saying I'm not loving your loving
I just need to know you're in it, you're there
Baby I want more than a summer love affair
this time around things are gunna change
Well I'm moving on, I'm running away
But baby this don't have to be it
Don't you know true love is love that don't quit
So what do you say
Come with me, lets run away
Well here we are on this old highway
The summer wind in our face
I guess it was more than a love affair
