On our 08:00 am Sanctuary Cruises whale tour, just outside the harbor in Moss Landing, two kayakers on a tandam kayak were almost crushed to death by a massive, near full-size humpback whale. We stopped to see a large aggregation of humpbacks feeding and carrying on with random acts of hijinks. There were also a lot of kayakers right in the middle of it all. Humpbacks were coming up next to and in the middle of many kayakers. It was amusing. It's all fun and games until someone gets jumped on. The next thing we knew, this thing launched right on top of these two kayakers. That was heavy. The video was shot by Sanctuary Cruises passenger Larry Plants.

A kayak is a small, relatively narrow, human-powered boat primarily designed to be manually propelled by means of a double blade paddle. The traditional kayak has a covered deck and one or more cockpits, each seating one paddler. Their cockpit is sometimes covered by a spraydeck (or "skirt") that prevents the entry of water from waves or spray and makes it possible for highly skilled and specially trained kayakers, to roll the kayak: that is, to capsize and right it without it filling with water or ejecting the paddler. In modern kayaks, such recovery methods have been replaced by a preventive approach based on increasing the kayak's stability, and by that reducing the likelihood of its capsize. Many modern kayaks have modified the traditional design in various ways, such as: eliminating the cockpit by seating the paddler on top of the boat ("sit-on-top" kayaks); having inflated air chambers surrounding the boat; replacing the single hull by twin hulls ("W" kayak), and replacing paddles with other human powered propulsion methods, such as foot-powered rotational propellers and 'flippers'. Kayaks are also being sailed, as well as propelled by means of small electric motors, and even by outboard gas engines, when possible.

I was trolling for bonito off the coast of Gaviota State Beach when my kayak was hit in the back. I turned around to see a very aggressive hammerhead shark ramming/biting my kayak and decided I needed to defend myself. I hit the shark over and over and over with my paddle before he finally settled down. He then stalked me all the way back to shore, occasionally approaching me again and receiving another paddle to the face. Even after I was on shore, he remained in about 4 feet of water pacing back and forth like he was just waiting for round #2. Haha.

On our 08:00 am Sanctuary Cruises whale tour, just outside the harbor in Moss Landing, two kayakers on a tandam kayak were almost crushed to death by a massive, near full-size humpback whale. We stopped to see a large aggregation of humpbacks feeding and carrying on with random acts of hijinks. There were also a lot of kayakers right in the middle of it all. Humpbacks were coming up next to and in the middle of many kayakers. It was amusing. It's all fun and games until someone gets jumped on. The next thing we knew, this thing launched right on top of these two kayakers. That was heavy. The video was shot by Sanctuary Cruises passenger Larry Plants.

I hit the shark over and over and over with my paddle before he finally settled down. He then stalked me all the way back to shore, occasionally approaching me again and receiving another paddle to the face. Even after I was on shore, he remained in about 4 feet of water pacing back and forth like he was just waiting for round #2. Haha.

Here I am sanding the raw strips for the first pass with a Festool Rotex 125 sander. I've got the sander on "coarse" mode and 80 grit sandpaper with a contour pad.
Prior to starting the sanding, I did a quick scraping with a paint scraper to remove glue drips and a quick pass with a block plane to start knocking the corners off between the strips.
The primary goal of this first sanding is to blend together the strips into a seamless smooth surface. The boat should be fair lengthwise, but there are facets formed by the flat surfaces of the strips.
If everything goes right, it shouldn't take long to do this first pass. By moving the sander at a moderate, but consistent, speed the sander will easily knock down the higher spots in one pass.
I do a cross-hatch pattern on each section 12 to 14 inch (30 - 35cm) with vertical/transverse motion followed by horizontal/longitudinal motion. Overlapping each pass by about 1/3rd. After finishing each section I move on to the next section.
The sander is generally kept flat to the surface or with pressure about centered on the pad on curve surfaces.
While I started with 80 grit on this boat, for some boats with more distinct transitions between strips due to tighter curves, I may start with 60 grit sandpaper. After leveling the whole boat with the coarse sandpaper, I will work my way up through the grits using the same technique to remove the scratch marks.

Sea Kayak Around Ireland is 45 minute documentary the tells the story of 2 Irish Sea Kayakers who take on their dream journey of circumnavigating their country.
2015 will go down, for myself (Jon Hynes) and my paddling partner, Sean Cahill as being one of our most memorable years. We both have enjoyed a lifetime of adventures from a very young age. This has been one of our most satisfying adventures yet.
We really hope you enjoy our documentary “Sea Kayak Around Ireland”. It’s been a dream of our to paddle around our own country for many years. In fact we were inspired by many of our kayaking friends who have taken on the journey in the past. Over the year both Sean and I have kayaked all over the world, we’ve had great victories over nature and the elements both on the sea and on the river. Sometimes we fared less well against those elements, however we always maintained a grounded sense and a willingness to learn. With these experiences behind us we embarked upon our dream trip around Ireland in June & July 2015.
Not only did the weather and elements test us but our trip was a celebration of life, fitness, adventure and most of all, Irish people. Every day we met people, who were so kind to us, we are forever grateful to each and everyone of you. Hopefully this film in some small way reflects how much that kindness means to us. Ireland truly is, one of the world’s most special places to come and sea kayak.

Amigos, la jornada que vivimos junto a mi amigo Fabián Mateos quedara en nuestras memorias seguramente por la cantidad de emociones vividas a bordo de nuestras pequeñas embarcaciones, se puede decir rodeados literalmente por un cardumen de tiburones. La jornada comenzó cerca del medio día y la idea era hacerle el aguante hasta las 15hs, sabemos que en ese rango de horario pican los bacotas en la zona. Utilizamos los equipos de siempre compuestos por cañas de 60 a 100lb y reeles penn senator 6/0 de los viejitos pero buenos. Carnada calamar entero línea con anzuelo Mustad 3406 14/0 (ver línea en tutorial de You Tube)
Ni bien posamos los globos a los 10 minutos tengo una infernal llevada en mi caña que a juzgar por lo que llevo calculo que cuando freno un poco tenía unos 70 metros en el carretel (se verá en video) de ahí en más fue una lucha tremenda sin miedo a equivocarme era uno de los muy grandes pero como esta pesca es difícil en todo sentido luego de 20 minutos aprox largo el anzuelo limpito, a tragar saliva y a encarnar de nuevo….
A los pocos minutos arremetida tremebunda en caña de Mate de algo que a la postre nos iba a asombrar, fue tal la llevada que el reel se le calentó mal, lo comprobó al tocar la tuerca del freno que le quemo el dedo jajaj no podíamos creer ! estábamos ante la presencia de un verdadero monstruo. La contienda fue algo alucinante un ida y vuelta que te hacia estallar los brazos pero Mate se lo banco a fondo. En un momento a lo lejos vemos con asombro volar literalmente este pedazo de tiburón en su afán de escapar, un espectáculo único que te hacia reflexionar un poco pensando en lo que se venía. Luego de 40 minutos ya teníamos el animal a unos 20 metros de nuestros kayaks y contemplábamos la aleta dorsal y su lomo cortar el agua como un verdadero submarino. Al ratito quedamos atónitos por lo que vimos, un ataque a este maravilloso bacota de otro tiburón o varios, que lo hizo explotar en la superficie del agua (se verá en video) era un frenesí de tiburones jajaja y nosotros flotando en el medio de esa fiesta…. Lo arrimamos a duras penas tomando del líder ya que la bestia había depuesto un poco sus fuerzas mientras sus amigos nos rodeaban y trataban de ayudarnos con el peso pesado dándoles unos buenos tarascones jajaja que espectáculo!!
Venia la marcación biologíca que se pudo hacer sin inconvenientes y posterior liberación de este ejemplar que quedara en el recuerdo y en video, bien por Mate!!
La historia no finalizo en esta captura ya que se dieron dos ejemplares más de aprox 2 metros que logramos marcar y liberar con éxito, también en caña de Fabian Mateos, groso!! lleva 5 ejemplares al hilo y yo 5 ejemplares al hilo pero perdidos…Aunque parezca mentira pescamos con la misma línea y la que utiliza Mate es la del tutorial que se la regale para su cumple jajaj no se puede creer, continuando con el relato, cuando lo voy a asistir en la última captura se me prende otro terrible animal (teníamos dos captura a la vez) que me largo limpito el anzuelo luego de 5 minutos de batalla, lo bueno que desde que implementamos este sistema de líneas largas no tuvimos más cortes.
En resumen, una jornada maravillosa y como siempre indicamos quien realice esta pesca deberá tomar todos los recaudos posibles para evitar un mal momento, un ejemplar como el detallado sin miedo a equivocarme arriba de 130kg te puede matar, no porque te va a comer sino que puede causarnos un herida terrible arriba de estas pequeñas embarcaciones. Las marcas biológicas fueron, el primer ejemplar una hembra de aprox 2,7m Hembra Marca MACN 1324 el segundo macho de 2.m Marca MACN 1506 y una hembra también de 2m. Marca MACN 1513. Amigos, la jornada que vivimos junto a mi amigo Fabián Mateos quedara en nuestras memorias seguramente por la cantidad de emociones vividas a bordo de nuestras pequeñas embarcaciones, se puede decir rodeados literalmente por un cardumen de tiburones. La jornada comenzó cerca del medio día y la idea era hacerle el aguante hasta las 15hs, sabemos que en ese rango de horario pican los bacotas en la zona. Utilizamos los equipos de siempre compuestos por cañas de 60 a 100lb y reeles penn senator 6/0 de los viejitos pero buenos. Carnada calamar entero línea con anzuelo Mustad 3406 14/0 (ver línea en tutorial de You Tube)
