Gary S. May (EECS M.S. ’88, Ph.D. ’91), Dean of the College of Engineering and Southern Company Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology delivered the 2016 Kuh Lecture on March 10, 2016.
Dean May's talk was titled “Broadening Participation in STEM: How Far We’ve Come, How Far We Have to Go.”
The 2016 lecture is the fifth in a series that brings to the Berkeley campus a distinguished speaker of international stature and accomplishment in industry and/or academia in the fields of engineering and technology, information, and computer sciences.
Financial support for the annual event comes from a generous endowment gift from Dean Emeritus Ernest S. Kuh and Mrs. Bettine Kuh. Dean Kuh passed away in fall 2015.
Past speakers have been Andy Grove (Intel co-founder); Bill Sullivan (former CEO of Agilent Technologies); Sehat Sutardja (Marvell co-founder and CEO); and Wayne Dai (CEO of VeriSilicon Holdings, Co.).
This year the Kuh Lecture was the keynote presentation of the Berkeley Engineering Stars in Technology (BEST), a daylong workshop hosted by the EECS department to showcase the accomplishments of outstanding Berkeley Engineering alumni and faculty and bring them together with students who aspire to become leaders in technology.
This year’s first annual workshop celebrated the accomplishments and discuss challenges for African-American engineers.
The College of Engineering sponsored the 2016 Kuh Lecture, in collaboration with EECS and UC Berkeley chapters of the Black Engineering & Science Student Association (BESSA) and Black Graduate Engineering & Science Students Association (BGESS).

At the Sacramento Region Innovation Awards lunch on November 7, UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May accepted the award on behalf of UC Davis for Innovation "Champion" of the Year. During his acceptance speech May relayed aspects of his strategic vision which includes strengthening its ties to the Sacramento region. He invited the audience to,"Imagine an innovation ecosystem in the urban core of Sacramento. Imagine this hub as an extension of the UC Davis campus, one that links the world-renowned research, faculty, and students with local businesses." These and other remarks exemplify his vision for UC Davis to strengthen its ties to the Sacramento region.

The new UC Davis chancellor has a plan for the university and want to move forward from the controversies that unfolded under Linda Katehi’s leadership. Gary May wants to see more diversity on campus and build stronger business partnerships with Sacramento for research and development opportunities. May, who is a father to two college students, said he is sensitive to the financial pressures of tuition and addressed ways to make college more affordable for UC Davis students.

Gary S. May
Gary Stephen May (born 1964) is the dean of Georgia Tech's College of Engineering. From 2005 to 2011, he was the Steve W. Chaddick School Chair of the School of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech.
Biography
Early life
May was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Georgia Tech, where he was a member of the ANAK Society, an elite and secretive honor society. May graduated in 1985 with a B.E.E. degree in electrical engineering. He then attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned an M.S. (1987) and Ph.D. (1991), both in electrical engineering and computer science.
Georgia Tech
May joined the Georgia Tech ECE faculty in 1991 as a member of the School's microelectronics group. His research is in the field of computer-aided manufacturing of integrated circuits. He was a National Science Foundation "National Young Investigator" (1993–98) and was Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Semiconductor Manufacturing (1997-2001). He has authored over 200 articles and technical presentations in the area of IC computer-aided manufacturing. In 2001, he was named Motorola Foundation Professor, and was appointed associate chair for Faculty Development.

The University of California, Davis (also referred to as UCD, UC Davis, or Davis), is a public research university and one of the 10 campuses of the University of California system. Located in Davis, California, just west of Sacramento, it encompasses 7,309 acres of land, making it the largest UC campus in terms of land ownership. UC Davis also has the third-largest enrollment in the UC System after UCLA and UC Berkeley.
The Carnegie Foundation classifies UC Davis as a comprehensive doctoral research university with a medical program, and very high research activity. The UC Davis faculty includes 23 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 25 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 17 members of the American Law Institute, 14 members of the Institute of Medicine, and 14 members of the National Academy of Engineering. Among other honors, university faculty, alumni, and researchers have won the Nobel Peace Prize, Presidential Medal of Freedom, Pulitzer Prize, MacArthur Fellowship, National Medal of Science, Blue Planet Prize, and Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering.

Engineering education
Engineering education is the activity of teaching knowledge and principles related to the professional practice of engineering. It includes the initial education (Bachelor and or Masters degree) for becoming an engineer and any advanced education and specializations that follow. Engineering education is typically accompanied by additional post graduate examinations and supervised training as the requirements for a professional engineering license. The length of education, and training to qualify as a basic professional engineer is typical 8 years with 15-20 years for an engineer that takes responsibility for major projects.
Technology education in primary and secondary schools often serves as the foundation for engineering education at the university level. (Douglas, Iverson & Kalyandurg, 2004). In the United States, engineering education is a part of the STEM initiative in public schools. Service-learning in engineering education is gaining popularity within the variety of disciplinary focuses within engineering education including mechanical engineering, construction science, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, and other forms of related education.

XD Story: May and Gary are together, however everywhere they go, some kind of trouble always comes up. Gary meets Dawn and nothing has happened. Getting May's close friends, Brock and Ash, Gary tells the story and May happens to have seen Ash with Gary. Ash gets upset after hearing it (hint of Advance shipping. XP). Brock and Dawn try to calm him down. and May hears that part of it. and Gary breaks up with her a bit later. That night May gets upset, even though she did have the upper hand to dumping him first. She gets upset and decides to sing a song and tell a story to the world and Gary as well. Eventually, she meets up with Drew, but still has feelings for Gary. That's the end of the story. this is my first non-contestshipping vid, involving May. And the first to have a bunch of shippings involved. [5 to be exact]. and the First to also have a full story in it. XD Also please note that Gary and Dawn sing somewhere towards the end of the vid. as they try to forget may. Dawn was may's best friend and of course gary was her ex-boyfriend. XD Sorry for the long wait. This year the Kuh Lecture was the keynote presentation of the Berkeley Engineering Stars in Technology (BEST), a daylong workshop hosted by the EECS department to showcase the accomplishments of outstanding Berkeley Engineering alumni and faculty and bring them together with students who aspire to become leaders in technology.
This year’s first annual workshop celebrated the accomplishments and discuss challenges for African-American engineers.

my second request in a while, however i think someone did request something a long time ago so this is my third officially. XD
Story:

(May 3, 2014) -- Gary Becker, a University of Chicago professor who received the Nobel Prize in economic sciences in 1992 died Saturday at age 83. Becker was cited for applying economic analysis to a wide range of human behavior and interactions. The economics and sociology professor studied issues such as marriage and divorce, crime and punishment, addiction and household decisions. The University of Chicago is planning a memorial service to honor Becker's life and work, with details to be announced at a later date. The front pages of Gary Taubes’ new book on sugar feature a blurb excerpted from the magazine Scientific American:

Gary’s most recent obsession is documented in “The Case Against Sugar,” a book that argues that increased consumption of sugar over the past 30 to 40 years has led to a diabetes epidemic not only in the United States, but an epidemic that’s now spreading around the world.
Episode 37 of STEM-Talk features a more than two-hour conversation with Gary about his latest research as well as a look back at other nutrition and science topics that have dominated Gary’s journalistic investigations since the 1980s.
Gary first burst onto the national scene in 2002 with an article in the New York Times Magazine titled, “What If’s It’s All Been a Big Fat Lie?” Gary made the point that Robert Atkins and his high-fat, low-carb diet had a better history and scientific record of helping people lose weight than the low-fat diet that was and remains the centerpiece of the nation’s health policy and food pyramid.
The article had an immediate impact. As Michael Pollan pointed out in the introduction of “The Omnivore’s Dilemma,” in the fall of 2002 bread “abruptly disappeared overnight from the American dinner table.” Virtually overnight, wrote Pollan, Americans changed the way they eat.
Gary did not set out to become a science journalist. He graduated from Harvard College in 1977 with an S.B. degree in applied physics and went on to earn an M.S. degree in aeronautical engineering from Stanford University. But while at Stanford, he realized he wasn’t that passionate about becoming an aeronautical engineer and decided to enroll in the Columbia School of Journalism to become an investigative reporter.
In the ‘80s, Gary became fascinated with flawed science and started writing a series of magazine articles about bad science. That eventually led to a pair of books: “Nobel Dreams” in 1987 and “Bad Science: The Short Life and Weird Times of Cold Fusion” in 1993. After “Bad Science,” Gary turned to nutrition reporting and that resulted in the 2002 article in the New York Times Magazine.
He followed up on his research for the article with two books: “Good Calories, Bad Calories” in 2007; and “Why We Get Fat” in 2010. Both books detailed how refined carbohydrates are largely responsible for America’s rising obesity rate and a primary cause of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other chronic diseases of the Western diet. His new book, “The Case Against Sugar,” takes this argument a step further and shows how the explosion of sugar consumption and sugar-rich products in the United States has led to a global diabetes epidemic.
Dan Barber, author of “The Third Plate,” wrote in a New York Times review of Gary’s book, “Comparing the dangers of inhaling cigarettes with chowing down on candy bars may sound like a false equivalence, but Gary Taubes’s “The Case Against Sugar” will persuade you otherwise. He graduated from Harvard College in 1977 with an S.B. degree in applied physics and went on to earn an M.S. degree in aeronautical engineering from Stanford University. But while at Stanford, he realized he wasn’t that passionate about becoming an aeronautical engineer and decided to enroll in the Columbia School of Journalism to become an investigative reporter.
In the ‘80s, Gary became fascinated with flawed science and started writing a series of magazine articles about bad science. That eventually led to a pair of books: “Nobel Dreams” in 1987 and “Bad Science: The Short Life and Weird Times of Cold Fusion” in 1993. After “Bad Science,” Gary turned to nutrition reporting and that resulted in the 2002 article in the New York Times Magazine.
He followed up on his research for the article with two books: “Good Calories, Bad Calories” in 2007; and “Why We Get Fat” in 2010. Both books detailed how refined carbohydrates are largely responsible for America’s rising obesity rate and a primary cause of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other chronic diseases of the Western diet. His new book, “The Case Against Sugar,” takes this argument a step further and shows how the explosion of sugar consumption and sugar-rich products in the United States has led to a global diabetes epidemic.
Dan Barber, author of “The Third Plate,” wrote in a New York Times review of Gary’s book, “Comparing the dangers of inhaling cigarettes with chowing down on candy bars may sound like a false equivalence, but Gary Taubes’s “The Case Against Sugar” will persuade you otherwise.
