Stan Lee Biography brought to you by Lore in a Minute!
Before he was Stan Lee, he was your friendly neighborhood teenager, Stanley Lieber, who dreamt of writing the next Great American Novel. Stan Lee held various earthly jobs in his youth that included writing obituaries, delivering sandwiches, and selling newspaper subscriptions before he became an assistant at Timely Comics. There, he made his comic book debut as a text filler for Captain America No. 3 under the name “Stan Lee.”
Stan quickly bolted up through the ranks, going from text-filling to story-writing, then being appointed as editor-in-chief. From there, Stan’s spectacular rise to power knew no limits as he transformed Timely Comics into Marvel Comics and ushered in the Marvel Revolution becoming arguably the comic book creator of our time. With Jack Kirby, Stan created their first superhero group, the Fantastic Four. The Fantastic Four achieved astonishing success and led Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko to create some of Marvel’s finest heroes: Iron Man, The Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor, and the X-Men.
After revolutionizing comic books, Stan launched an iron-fisted invasion of the cinema world and spearheaded the Marvel assault on Hollywood. With Stan developing and producing, Marvel enjoyed another staggering victory on the silver screen as Hollywood fell in love with the flawed superhero archetype. But the work of producing films while presiding over a multi-million dollar company began to wear, and Stan decided it was time to step down as president of Marvel.
Stan Lee Biography:
Stan Lee, or Stanley Lieber, is an American comic book writer, media producer and the former chairman and president of Marvel Comics. He is most known for his collaborations with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko creating some of Marvel’s finest superheroes including: Iron Man, The Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor, and the X-Men. He is arguably the greatest comic book creator of our time and was inducted to the comic book industry's Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1995.
About Marvel Comics:
Marvel Comics, also known as Marvel Entertainment or Marvel Worldwide, is an American publisher of comic books and media. Marvel Comics began as Timely comics and quickly evolved as one of the greatest comic book creators of all time. Some of Marvel’s greatest Superheroes were co-created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Marvel was acquired by Disney on August 31st, 2009.

The Human Torch, also known as Jim Hammond, is a fictional character, a Marvel Comics-owned superhero. Created by writer-artist Carl Burgos, he first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 (Oct.1939), published by Marvel's predecessor, Timely Comics.
The "Human" Torch was actually an android created by scientist Phineas Horton. He possessed the ability to surround himself with fire and control flames. In his earliest appearances, he was portrayed as a science fiction monstrosity, but quickly became a hero.
The Human Torch was one of Timely Comics' three signature characters, along with Captain America and Namor the Sub-Mariner. Like many superheroes, the Human Torch fell into obscurity by the 1950s. In 1961, Marvel recycled his name and powers into a new, unrelated Human Torch, a member of the Fantastic Four (who actually was human). Unlike Captain America and the Sub-Mariner, the original Human Torch has had only a small presence in the post-1950s Marvel comic books and is closely associated with the Golden Age.

The Human Torch, also known as Jim Hammond, is a fictional superhero that appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics.
In 2012, Hammond was ranked 28th in IGN's list of "The Top 50 Avengers".

The Angel (Thomas Halloway, often shortened to Tom Halloway) is a fictional character, a superhero in Marvel Comics Universe. Created by artist Paul Gustavson and an unconfirmed writer during the Golden Age of Comic Books, the Angel first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 (Oct. 1939), the first publication of Marvel Comics' predecessor, Timely Comics.
The Angel is a non-superpowered detective who nonetheless wore a superhero costume.
Created by artist Paul Gustavson and written either by him or by Ray Gill[2] or another writer, the Angel debuted in Timely Comics' Marvel Comics #1 (Oct. 1939). The Angel was the next-most-popular Timely character after the "big three" of the Human Torch, the Sub-Mariner and Captain America, with more than 100 Golden Age appearances — starting in that initial Marvel title (which changed its name to Marvel Mystery Comics with issue #2), up through #79 (Dec. 1946); as the sole backup feature in Sub-Mariner Comics #1-21 (Spring 1941 - Fall 1946); and in occasional appearances in All Winners Comics (#1, Summer 1941), The Human Torch (#5[a], Summer 1941), Mystic Comics (vol. 2, #1-3, Oct.-Winter 1944), Daring Comics (#10, Winter 1944-45).
A simulacrum of the Angel was temporarily created from the mind of Rick Jones, along with those of the Blazing Skull, the Fin, the Patriot, and the Golden Age Vision, to aid the superhero team the Avengers during the Kree-Skrull War, in The Avengers #97 (March 1972).
The Angel is one of the central characters of the eight-issue miniseries The Marvels Project (Aug. 2009 - May 2010), by writer Ed Brubaker and penciler Steve Epting.

Captain America is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by cartoonists Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (cover dated March 1941) from Timely Comics, a predecessor of Marvel Comics. Captain America was designed as a patriotic supersoldier who often fought the Axis powers of World War II and was Timely Comics' most popular character during the wartime period. The popularity of superheroes waned following the war and the Captain America comic book was discontinued in 1950, with a short-lived revival in 1953. Since Marvel Comics revived the character in 1964, Captain America has remained in publication.
Captain America wears a costume that bears an American flag motif, and is armed with a nearly indestructible shield that he throws at foes. The character is usually depicted as the alter ego of Steve Rogers, a frail young man enhanced to the peak of human perfection by an experimental serum to aid the United States government's imminent efforts in World War II. Near the end of the war, he was trapped in ice and survived in suspended animation until he was revived in the present day. Although Captain America often struggles to maintain his ideals as a man out of his time with its modern realities, he remains a highly respected figure in his community which includes becoming the long-time leader of the Avengers.

Namor the Sub-Mariner first appeared in April 1939 in the prototype for a planned giveaway comic titled Motion Picture Funnies Weekly, produced by the comic book packager Funnies Inc. The only eight known samples among those created to send to theater owners were discovered in the estate of the deceased publisher in 1974. When the giveaway idea fell through, creator Bill Everett used the character for Marvel Comics #1, the first comic book by Funnies, Inc. client Timely Comics, predecessor of Marvel Comics. The final panel of the earlier, unpublished eight-page Sub-Mariner story had included a "Continued Next Week" box that reappeared, sans lettering, in an expanded 12-page story. The series Marvel Comics was retitled Marvel Mystery Comics with issue #2 (Dec. 1939).
Namor's first cover appearance: Marvel Mystery Comics #4 (Feb. 1940). Art by Alex Schomburg.
In his first appearances Namor was an enemy of the United States. Comics historian Les Daniels noted that "Namor was a freak in the service of chaos. Although the Sub-Mariner acted like a villain, his cause had some justice, and readers reveled in his assaults on civilization. His enthusiastic fans weren't offended by the carnage he created as he wrecked everything from ships to skyscrapers." Everett's antihero would eventually battle Carl Burgos' android superhero, the Human Torch, when in 1940 Namor threatened to sink the island of Manhattan underneath a tidal wave. When the U.S. entered World War II, Namor would aid the Allies of World War II against Adolf Hitler and the Axis powers. Supporting characters included Betty Dean, a New York City policewoman introduced in Marvel Mystery Comics #3 (and later known as Betty Dean-Prentiss), who was a steady companion, and his cousins Namora and Dorma.
Namor starred in the Golden Age comic book Sub-Mariner Comics, published quarterly, then thrice-yearly, and finally bimonthly, from issues #1–32 (Fall 1941 – June 1949). A backup feature each issue starred the detective-superhero the Angel. Along with many other Timely characters, Namor disappeared a few years after the end of World War II and the decline in popularity of superhero comics. He briefly fought crime as a member of the post-war superhero team the All-Winners Squad, and, through a 1970s retcon, was given a history of having fought with the Allies during World War II in the superhero team the Invaders. Both these super-groups were built around the core of Namor, Captain America, and the original Human Torch.
The Sub-Mariner experienced a brief revival in the mid-1950s at Atlas Comics, the 1950s iteration of Marvel. Along with Captain America and the original Human Torch, he was revived in Young Men #24. Soon afterward, Sub-Mariner Comics was revived with issues #33–42 (April 1954 – Oct. 1955). During this time, Namora had her own spin-off series. A planned live-action television program starring Namor did not appear and the revival of the comic book series was cancelled a second time.

Can an artificial life form ever be human? That's the question that always bedevils a certain Marvel superhero.
The first Vision was created by the writer-artist team of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in Marvel Mystery Comics #13 (Nov. 1940), published by Marvel predecessor Timely Comics during the 1930s and 1940s, a period which fans and historians call the Golden Age of Comic Books.
Decades later, editor Stan Lee and writer Roy Thomas decided to add a new team member to the superhero-team series The Avengers. Thomas wanted to bring back the Golden Age Vision, but Lee was set on introducing an android member. Thomas ultimately compromised by using a new, android Vision. The second Vision first appeared in The Avengers #57 (Oct. 1968). Thomas wanted the character to be white as befitting his ghostly name, but the printing at the time would have rendered the page transparent. He settled on red as he did not want Vision to be green like the Hulk or blue like the Atlanteans. The character has been compared with Spock from Star Trek, but Thomas said that he was barely aware of the TV series at the time.[3] He acknowledged being influenced by the Adam Link character by Otto Binder, one of the first robots treated as a sympathetic character rather than as a mechanical tool.
In The Avengers #75 (April 1970), the Scarlet Witch is reintroduced to the team and soon becomes a love interest for the Vision. Thomas recounted, "I felt that a romance of some sort would help the character development in The Avengers, and the Vision was a prime candidate because he appeared only in that mag... as did Wanda, for that matter. So they became a pair, for just such practical considerations. It would also, I felt, add to the development I was doing on the Vision's attempting to become ‘human.’" Thomas also came up with the idea of the Vision having been created from the body of the Human Torch, but only planted a vague clue to this (in The Avengers #93) before leaving the series. It was finally followed up in The Avengers #134–135. Writer Steve Englehart explained, "That plot was well known in-house for years, and since Roy [Thomas] and Neal [Adams] hadn't had a chance to do it, I did it on my watch with Roy’s blessing."
The Vision and Scarlet Witch were married in Giant-Size Avengers #4 (June 1975). The couple starred in the limited series Vision and the Scarlet Witch #1–4 (Nov. 1982 – Feb. 1983), by writer Bill Mantlo and penciller Rick Leonardi. This was followed by a second volume numbered #1–12 (Oct. 1985 – Sept. 1986), written by Steve Englehart and penciled by Richard Howell, in which the Scarlet Witch gives birth to twin boys conceived with the Vision through magical means.
The "Vision Quest" story in West Coast Avengers #42–45 (March – June 1989) by writer/penciller John Byrne took the character away from his earlier depictions as a "synthetic human" and emphasized his android nature. The story had the Vision's memory and human brain patterns wiped out, severed his relationship with his wife, revealed their children to be essentially imaginary constructs, and included a two-page spread showing a dismantled Vision. Journalist Karen Walker later commented, "This image alone has probably done more to shape how future writers (and readers) perceive the character than anything before or since. Once seen broken down into component parts, it’s hard to truly move past that image and think of the Vision as a synthetic man, not a machine."
The Vision appeared in a solo limited series, Vision, #1–4 (Nov. 1994 – Feb. 1995), by writer Bob Harras and penciller Manny Clark. Nearly a decade after that came a second four-issue volume (Oct. 2002 – Jan. 2003), written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Ivan Reis.
The series Young Avengers, which ran 12 issues from April 2005 to August 2006, introduced a new Vision, who is a combination of the synthezoid Vision's program files and the armor and mental engrams of the hero Iron Lad.
Vision appeared as a regular character in the 2010–2013 Avengers series, from issue #19 (January 2012) through its final issue #34 (January 2013).

Marvel Comics # 1, cover date October 1939 featured the first Marvel superhero – the Human Torch (also Sean wants to say this was also the debut of a certain sub-mariner named Namor). Eventually the publisher – Timely would become what we now know as Marvel Comics. We decided to honour that first appearance on our first appearance … in cocktail form.

Marvel started in 1939 as Timely Publications, and by the early 1950s had generally become known as Atlas Comics. Marvel's modern incarnation dates from 1961, the year that the company launched The Fantastic Four and other superhero titles created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and many others.
Marvel counts among its characters such well-known properties as Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, Thor, the Silver Surfer, Daredevil and Ghost Rider, such teams as the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Guardians of the Galaxy and the X-Men, and antagonists such as Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Kingpin, Magneto, Doctor Doom, Loki, Thanos, Hydra and the Red Skull. Most of Marvel's fictional characters operate in a single reality known as the Marvel Universe, with locations that mirror real-life cities. Characters such as Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, Daredevil and Dr. Strange are based in New York City, whereas the X-Men have historically been based in Salem Center, New York and the Hulk's stories often have been set in the American Southwest.

This Play-doh set is Marvel Hero Adventures version.
Mold some mighty friends and save the day! This super-fun Super Hero Squad set comes with molds so you can create the figures and faces of some of your favorite heroes. Roll out some of the PLAY-DOH modeling compound and put it in the body mold to create a figure of the "web-slinging" Spider-Man character. Then, press the molds to create the faces of the "metal clad" Iron Man character and others. Add them to the playmat to complete the action-packed scene or use them to act out bad guy-busting adventures. No matter how badly your heroes get squished in their "battles", you can always make them fresh all over again

Issue 1 - Human Torch
Marvel Comics # 1, cover date October 1939 featured the first Marvel superhero – the Human Torch (also Sean wants to say this was also the debut of a certain sub-mariner named Namor). Eventually the publisher – Timely would become what we now know as Marvel Comics. We decided to honour that first appearance on our first appearance … in cocktail form.
The Human Torch:
1 part Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey
2 parts Dr. Pepper
In this issue we introduce the concept of our podcast – which is three dudes talking about the comics that came out over the last few weeks, picking their favourites and drinking a themed cocktail or craft beer. Future episodes will include a segment called Required Reading – where we all read the same classic story line and discuss how well it holds up today. We will introduce the next issues Required Reading on each episode as well if you want to read along at home. In issue 2 we will be discussing 1984’s Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars – a twelve issue crossover that was conceived to promote a line of Mattel action figures.
We had two picks of the week for this episode.
SW 1985
CaptureBatman #44 (DC Comics) co-written by Scott Snyder and Brian Azzarello with art by Jock. We all agreed this was a great issue and the art was fantastic. A little different tone than recent stories from Snyder that addresses some real world issues
DD 18Daredevil #18 (Marvel Comics) written by Mark Waid with art by Chris Samnee. Say it ain’t so! Mark Waid’s award winning and record setting (for length) run on the man without fear comes to a satisfying conclusion. Waid writes a great Kingpin and throws in some nods to the past with references to the classic Born Again story arc. Nice work Waid … we’re glad you signed it.
