Ralph Waite (June 22, 1928 – February 13, 2014) was an American actor, voice artist, and political activist, best known for his role as John Walton, Sr. on The Waltons, which he occasionally directed. In addition, Waite appeared in many guest roles on numerous television series, most recently in a recurring role in NCIS as Jackson Gibbs, the father of Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
Waite, the eldest of five children, was born in White Plains, New York on June 22, 1928, to Ralph H. Waite, a construction engineer, and Esther (née Mitchell) Waite. Too young for World War II, Waite served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946 to 1948, then graduated from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. He worked briefly as a social worker. Waite earned a master's degree from Yale University Divinity School and was an ordained Presbyterian minister and religious editor at Harper & Row, New York City before deciding on an acting career. He was a member of the Peninsula Players summer theater program during the 1963 season.
The Waltons is an American television series created by Earl Hamner, Jr., based on his book Spencer's Mountain, and a 1963 film of the same name. The show is centered on a family in a rural Virginia community during the Great Depression and World War II.
The series pilot aired as a television movie entitled The Homecoming: A Christmas Story and was broadcast on December 19, 1971. Beginning in September 1972, the series originally aired on CBS for a total of nine seasons. After the series was canceled by CBS in 1981, NBC aired three television movie sequels in 1982, with three more in the 1990s on CBS. The Waltons was produced by Lorimar Productions and distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution in syndication.
The main story takes place in Walton's Mountain, a fictional town at the foot of a mountain in fictitious Jefferson County, Virginia.
The actual place upon which the stories are based is in Nelson County, Virginia and is the community of Schuyler.

Very good television movie about the exploitation of migrant workers in US farm camps. What it lacks in subtlety it makes up in the truth of the situations it depicts. Features strong performances by Paul Winfield and Mr. Walton himself, Ralph Waite. Jennifer Jason Leigh portrays the type of character she would play for the next several films and TV appearances - a shy, withdrawn girl who undergoes traumatic events but emerges as a survivor. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Actor Ralph Waite, best known for playing family patriarch Papa Walton on the 70s era smash "The Waltons," has died. The 85-year-old reportedly died in his Palm Desert home. Waite played John Walton Sr., the tough but lovable head of a large family trying to live out a meager existence in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia in the Depression-era 1930s. The actor was born in White Plains, New York on June 22, 1928. He had small roles in big movies (including "Cool Hand Luke" in 1967 and "Five Easy Pieces" in 1970) and did a lot of stage work. "The Waltons," which ran for nine seasons on CBS (1972-81), made Waite a star. TV Guide ranked Papa Walton as TV's #3 all-time dad in 2004. Richard Thomas may always be remembered fondly as John-Boy from The Waltons, but hes also enjoyed a long career as a serious dramatic actor (he first appeared on Broadway at the age of 7). Hes received glowing notices for his work in Hamlet, Richard II, Edward Albees Tiny Alice, Lanford Wilsons Fifth of July and Terrence McNallys The Stendhal Syndrome. New York Times critic Frank Rich wrote that he was one of the few actors to have refined rather than forgotten his craft during a long career in television. In addition to dozens of film and TV credits, hes also published several volumes of poetry. Now that hes left Waltons Mountain far behind, were proposing to send him to an even more remote location. Lets ask him what hes packed in his survival kit for the trip. * Listen to the whole Inte...
