The Science & Process of Healing from Grief | Huberman Lab Podcast #74
This episode, I discuss grief and the challenges of processing losses of different kinds. I explain the biological mechanisms of grief, including how neural circuits for emotional and factual memory combine with those for love and attachment, to create feelings of absence and yearning. I also provide science-based tools to assist with the grieving process, including how to reframe and remap the relationship with those we have lost while still maintaining a strong emotional connection to them. I also explain the importance of having and building strong foundational psychological and biological states so that we can better cope with grief when it happens. Finally, I describe tools to adjust those states, inclu...

We recorded this episode before the recent mass shooting tragedies in the United States. While we hope the information in this episode will be of use to anyone suffering from grief of any kind and at any time, we are also careful to acknowledge that many people require additional support and resources. For that reason, we include mention of such resources and we generally hope people will access them if needed.

“Grief is unpredictable, and it will go wherever it finds an outlet. If it can’t be expressed emotionally, it may find expression in the body.” (136)
Grief, like all emotions, isn’t just in your head; it shows up in your body in remarkable ways. But most people have never been taught what is common in the grieving process and how grief does show up in your body, and this can leave some people feeling stuck, spiraling through endless grief and pain. Grief has many physical symptoms.
When you learn the physical symptoms of grief, you can be more equipped to address it and work through the process of grief and loss. In this video we’ll learn from grief expert Dr. Dorothy Holinger the author of The Anatomy of Grief, how grief shows up in the body and what we can do to work through it.
Grief does not have a concrete number of stages of grief. But, when you learn about the physical symptoms you can gain more awareness of your body and be more accepting of those symptoms of grief and loss.
I recently recorded an interview with Dorothy about how grief impacts the body, but unfortunately some of the video files got corrupted, so I’m summarizing our conversation here. The full length interview is on my podcast. https://tinpodcast.podbean.com/e/how-grief-shows-up-in-the-body/
I’m not going to pretend that grief is some easy thing that can or should be fixed, but there are some things you can do that can help your heart and body work through the suffering.

In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/comeuntochrist/believe

What happens when you don’t process your grief? What happens when you avoid dealing with loss? People say that time heals, but I would argue that it doesn’t unless you allow yourself to work through your pain little by little.
Now it’s clear that each person’s grief is unique, there isn’t a concrete set of steps you can do in order, there isn’t a time limit for mourning. But there is a big difference between working through stuff and not working through stuff. People who process their grief allow themselves to face their pain, even in small doses. They address their feelings, they may talk about them or write about them, they mourn. When someone doesn’t work through their pain, they try to distract themselves, they keep busy, they desperately avoid their pain, which in the long run leads to more pain. So we’re going to talk about 7 signs that you’re not processing your grief. And you’ll learn 3 ways to start to face your grief in small steps.
Recently I partnered with Sarah Engler, LCSW, to create a course called ”Understanding Grief and Loss”. She teaches how loss can stem from a loved one dying, but it can also come from many more situations- like a divorce, an expectation that doesn’t happen, a lifecycle change like aging or change in employment, and so many more situations where you may experience strong emotions about losing something you care about. Sarah does a great job explaining how not dealing with your loss can lead to these 7 signs.

🔵 HOW GRIEF IMPACTS THE BODY
When you first hear about a loss your brain interprets it as a threat to your survival and your amygdala triggers the fight, flight and freeze response. You may scream, run away or feel unable to communicate. Grief can increase cortisol which is your bodies main stress hormone.
Have you ever heard a story about someones heart breaking from grief? It’s very rare but it is a real condition, it’s called broken heart syndrome. Broken heart syndrome is a temporary condition that occurs when the heart muscle becomes weakened or stunned in response to the loss of a loved one. The left ventricle, the main pumping chamber of the heart becomes enlarged and doesn't function properly. This can lead to a decrease in blood flow and a temporary decrease in heart function.
Scientists have discovered that tears are visually unique and vary in appearance depending on the type of tear and the reason for its production. Emotional tears are produced in response to a wide range of emotions and contain a higher level of stress hormones that other types of tears. Scientists have discovered that crying has a range of benefits, it’s self soothing and activates the parasympathetic nervous system which helps you relax. Shedding emotional tears release oxytocin and endorphins which are chemicals that ease both physical and emotional pain, so motional tears can act as a natural painkiller.
Bereavement can weaken your immune system and increase inflammation. According to a recent research study, if you are grieving you are more likely to have lower levels of natural killer cells and lymphocytes, which can increase your likelihood of illness or infection. There are other studies that show that vaccines may actually be less effective if you’re grieving because your body is not creating as many antibodies in respond to infection.
One common physical symptom of grief is appetite changes, which can include loss of appetite or increased appetite. Grief can alter the body's production of hormones that regulate appetite and metabolism. As you known grief can lead to an increase in the production of the hormone cortisol, this can stimulate appetite and lead to overeating. Grief can also increase activity of the hypothalamus, a brain region that plays a role in appetite regulation, so when the activity of the hypothalamus is increased this can lead to overeating. In addition to changes in appetite, grief may also lead to other physical symptoms that can affect your ability to eat, such as nausea, stomach problems, or changes in taste or smell. These physical symptoms can make it difficult to eat or enjoy food, this is why a lot of people lose weight when they are grieving.
Grief can lead to a state of hyperarousal, where the body is in a constant state of alertness and cannot relax enough to fall asleep. Also, when the cortisol is high it can interfere with the natural sleep-wake cycle and make it difficult to fall asleep. In addition to high cortisol levels, grief may also lead to other physical symptoms that can disrupt sleep, such as headaches, muscle tension and stomach problems. Grief can also cause racing thoughts, worries and other mental and emotional challenges that can make it difficult to relax and sleep.

'GRIEF' is a short film created for the Massey University paper Creative Processes. There were several compulsory elements we had to include as part of this assignment, these were: An overwhelming destruction, a door through which no one is allowed to enter, the phrase 'the human body is just an imperfect machine', and a song/chant/phrase/movement that keeps going around in circles. Additionally, it had to have a piece of music, an object and text that relates to our overall theme of 'Phoenix'.
The crew for this film were: Kaitlin Edmonds (me), Callum Goacher, Laura Wedlock and Ethan Brown. Filmed on a canon c100. Edited on Final Cut Pro.
