Queensland State Election Night (31-01-2015), Part 1
The previous state election saw Labor, which had governed the state for all but two years since 1989, suffer the worst defeat of a sitting government in the state's history. The LNP won 78 seats - the largest majority government in Queensland history - compared to just 7 seats for Labor. Even with an unpopular Premier in Campbell Newman (fighting for survival in his own seat) and an unpopular Prim

In our latest travel video 'Things to do in Queensland Australia' you will find all of the top attractions, events, dining, sports and wildlife encounters you've ever dreamed of.
This morning we are visiting the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary here in the Gold Coast and we are going to be having lots of animal encounters.
During our visit to Currumbin National Park, we had a chance to get up close and personal with Kangaroos.
Spotting animals we had previously never heard of was also part of the program, including the orange tree Kangaroo and one of Australia's most dangerous birds the Cassowary.
And no trip to Currumbin would be complete without spending a little bit of quality time with the adorable koalas.
Overall, we had a really cool experience here. I like that it had more of a conservation environment as opposed to being like a zoo.
Boarding the Derwent Hunter, we went sailing along the Whitsunday Islands of the Great Barrier Reef located in Queensland, Australia.
It's a beautiful day here in the Whitsunday Islands. After sailing for a while we had the chance to enjoy some beach time with an opportunity to go snorkeling.
Located just a few kilometers from Townsville, Magnetic Island was the perfect city getaway.
The island offers lots of walking trails, great beaches and a hint of rugged charm.
Here is a look at some of the activities we got to try during our visit to Maggie Island.
We also got to try a Bush Tucker Champagne breakfast which featured a delicious spread of food including pancakes, fresh fruit and grilled meats.
We have some free time this afternoon on the island and we've decided to do the Magnetic Island forts walk, which is supposed to be 4 kilometers. It is a return trip and it should take about an hour and a half. This is supposed to be Northern Australian's largest colony of Koalas in the wild.
We are here in Nelly Bay. We were just enjoying a walk along the waterfront and we noticed that there are some Wallabies over there on the rocks.
We are here at the Horseshoe Ranch on the north end of the island and we are going to be going horseback riding.
Also, what makes this experience unique is that at the end of the horseback riding lesson you get to go swimming with the horses in the ocean. That is what a lot of the riders are doing right now.
If you find yourself on Magnetic Island going horseback riding is a lot of fun.
Today we're going to be doing something really cool. We're going to have authentic Australian animal encounters. We're going to be putting snakes around our necks, hugging koalas and you have never had a snake around your neck so this should be kind of interesting.
Our morning at Bungalow Bay Koala Village was the perfect opportunity to get up close with some of Australia's local wildlife.
First we met various lizards, including the the two-headed lizard which has a tail that resembles the shape of its head.
Next it was time to hold a snake. I was quite nervous about it at first, but the ranger reassured me that this non-venomous python was one of the most well-behaved snakes she had every encountered. That was enough to get me to wrap it around my neck.
And lastly, we had the opportunity to hold cute koalas. These sleepy little creatures spend up to 20 hours a day napping, and the one we met dozed off right after its photo op.
Over the last year we've had the opportunity to try kayaking in both Vietnam and Finland.
When the opportunity came to try it in the Whitsundays with Salty Dog we jumped at the chance.
At times it was hard to concentrate on paddling given the spectacular scenery of the Whitsunday Islands.
During the outing we also got to spend a bit of time relaxing on an island with a pristine beach.
Overall, we'd recommend sea kayaking to just about anyone given that it is a safe and fun activity.
Rising to a height of some 286 meters above sea level. Castle Hill, a pink granite monolith, dominates Townsville as its most iconic landmark.
Having the opportunity to hike up to the top was something we couldn't pass up. This moderately challenging hike was certainly a good workout. We noticed many locals exercising along the way.
There are a number of vantage points on the way up but nothing beats the landscapes from the very top.
So they say you should do at least one thing that scares you every day. For me it is going to be riding the Ocean Jet.
After buckling up we began our Turbo Jet adventure. This 880 horsepower vessel ripped through the water like a speeding race car.

We stopped in to check out the some of the great natural experiences that can be enjoyed in Tropical North Queensland. We started in Cairns and went out for a trip to the Great Barrier Reef.
We sailed out to the reef to Michaelmas Cay with Passions of paradise. The great thing about this location is that you can snorkel right of the beach and if you are a certified diver you can also scuba dive this location.
We then decided to head north to check out the Daintree Rainforest. To get to the Daintree head towards Port Douglas. On your way to the Daintree be sure to check out Mossman Gorge, if its a hot day its a great place to go for a swim.
When you get to the Daintree there are many great walking tracks. As you adventure out along these tracks there are many different experiences that will enjoy and if you are lucky enough you may even see a Cassowary in the wild.
The Atherton Tablelands offers a range of things to do and see. Some of the places to visit are the crater lakes of lake Eacham and Barrine through to the Curtain Fig a must see. Heading further into the Great Dividing range you visit Mount Mulligan.

The previous state election saw Labor, which had governed the state for all but two years since 1989, suffer the worst defeat of a sitting government in the state's history. The LNP won 78 seats - the largest majority government in Queensland history - compared to just 7 seats for Labor. Even with an unpopular Premier in Campbell Newman (fighting for survival in his own seat) and an unpopular Prime Minister in Tony Abbott (unintentionally injecting himself into the campaign by knighting Prince Philip on Australia Day), the margin of their previous victory led most to predict an almost certain LNP majority win.

Queensland is proudly known as the sunshine state of Australia, and any time of year makes a good time to visit Brisbane (often called Brizzy by locals). Brisbane sightseeing is marked by parks, coastline, gardens, and more. Whether you want to play in the water or partake in some epic shopping, this Australian city welcomes you.
Start your Brisbane tour with a stop at Mount Coot-tha. The name of this mountain peak is derived from the Maori word for honey, which was once found in abundance here. While you’re at Mount Coot-tha, explore the stars of the Southern Hemisphere at the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium. Next, visit a laughing kookaburra at Brisbane Botanical Gardens.
Don’t forget about the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, where you can visit koalas, kangaroos, and other local animals. Once you’re ready to commune with humans again, head to Queen Street Mall for the heart of Brisbane’s shopping. The South Bank is rich with free activities, markets, and a lagoon where you can cool off.
Spare some time to take the public ferry to Newfoundland Park, where you can visit the restored Brisbane Powerhouse, filled with art installations. To end your day, climb the Story Bridge, an ideal spot to watch the sun set over the city. Don’t worry, Brisbane tourism includes many fine and casual dining options.

https://www.expedia.com/Gold-Coast.d180064.Destination-Travel-Guides
Australia’s Gold Coast is in the heart of subtropical Queensland, rife with natural beauty and a human spirit dedicated to vitality, fun, and enjoying life. The skyline of Gold Coast practically dips its toes in the ocean, and much of the area is rich in lush greenery and waterfalls. The north coast of this city began as a vacation retreat in the 1850’s, and maintains its position as the Gold Coast’s heart and soul of entertainment and surfing.
Many Gold Coast tours begin in the north and work their way south. The atmosphere in the north is quite bustling, while the south coast has a slower vibe and is a bit more relaxed. Start your trip to Gold Coast with a trip to the SkyPoint observation deck, one of the Gold Coast sightseeing gems. The deck grants stunning views of area beaches, parks, and water.
Head south to Burleigh Heads next, where you will be met with a national park and ideal surf breaks. This area is known as an aboriginal gathering place. Once you’ve had your fill of sun-soaked activities in Burleigh Head, head even further south to Coolangatta, a gateway for international travelers and home to the likes of sheltered beaches, a river, and plenty of shady parkland.
Remember that Gold Coast also happens to be the theme park capital of Australia, which helps drive Gold Coast tourism and serves as a nice complement to the lazy beach life also available. After hitting the water for some surf, go to Dreamworld, which is the largest theme park in Australia, and get an adrenaline rush on one of the many rollercoasters. SeaWorld™ and Warner Bros.® Movie World™ are also nearby.
Top off your trip down under with a trip to Mount Tamorine, a 30 minute drive inland from the coast. On the ridge of a volcano, Mount Tamborine offers a bounty rainforest trails and you can sip on local wines in Tamborine Village.

Cairns is a regional city in the far north of Queensland, Australia, founded 1876. The city was named after William Wellington Cairns, then-current Governor of Queensland. It was formed to serve miners heading for the Hodgkinson River goldfield, but experienced a decline when an easier route was discovered from Port Douglas. It later developed into a railhead and major port for exporting sugar cane, gold and other metals, minerals and agricultural products from surrounding coastal areas and the Atherton Tableland region. As of June 2012, the population is approximately 153,075.
The most important places to visit in Cairns are: The Great Barrier Reef, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, Kuranda Scenic Railway, Daintree and Cape Tribulation, Dine and Wine at the Atherton Tablelands and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. If you want to save time and money, the most important Cairns travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. The Sunshine Coast is famous for its beautiful long sandy beaches, and with so many idyllic beaches on offer, there's a stretch of sand to suit every occasion.
So we made our way just north of Brisbane to escape for a few days to Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
From the moment you dig your toes into the golden sand or breathe in the clean hinterland air, you'll begin to feel different.
After checking out some of the great beaches we made our way through the Sunshine Coasts Hinterland to enjoy some breath-taking views. The scene-stealing Glasshouse Mountains are the headline act, and are ably supported by lush rainforests, mist-shrouded waterfalls, and spectacular flora and fauna.
Australia Zoo is in the foothills of the Hinterland is the home of the famous Steve Irwin also known as the Crocodile Hunter. this place will definitely provide you with some up close and personal wildlife experiences.

Cairns is a small port city, yet what it may lack in size it makes up for with its access to a bounty of natural beauty. In fact, Cairns is considered a gateway to tropical North Queensland. This eastern Australia city is where the rainforest meets the reef, with Daintree Rainforest to the north and the Great Barrier Reef to the east.
Start your day in Cairns by visiting some of the open parkland in the city center or going for a short swim in the man-made lagoon. Rent a bike on the promenade or hit the waves at Trinity Beach if you want to experience some Aussie surfing.
After a morning of activity, you might be ready to slow things down. A trip on the Skyrail® Rainforest Cableway is Cairns sightseeing at its best. The cable car will take you over the canopy of tropical rainforest and waterfalls. The last stop on this breathtaking 90-minute ride is Kuranda, a small mountain village where you can do a bit of shopping before heading back down to Cairns. The rail also takes passengers to Smithfield, which is less than one hour from Port Douglas, an excellent destination for upscale shopping and dining.
After your spectacular rail ride, consider checking out some of the Cairns tourism that puts you up close and personal with some of Australia’s more… dangerous wildlife. Hartleys Crocodile Adventures lets you immerse yourself in the daily life of a croc by taking a boat ride through a swamp-like habitat where several of the reptiles live.
If softer animals are more up your alley, fear not. Cairns tours should always include a stop to the Cairns Tropical Zoo, where you can make some kangaroo and koala friends.

We decided to take on the ultimate Australian 4WD adventure and head up Queenslands Cape York Peninsula to Australias most northern point.
There are a number of ways you can tackle this drive experience. You can take on the OTT or OTL (Old Telegraph line track) where you will experience the great remote wilderness of Australia. This track starts at Bramwell junction and finishes at the Jardine River. There are two bypass roads that allow travellers to get from the Peninsula Development Road to The Tip without having to navigate all of the creek crossings and rough roads. They pass mainly through the highlands to the east and west of the route, and are heavily corrugated which makes for a rough drive.
If you decide to take on the challenge of the OTT there are a number of creek crossings along the way, some more challenging than others. Along the way the track reconnects with the Bypass road so you can bypass some of the more challenging crossings if need be.
Palm creek, Gunshot, cockatoo creek are some of the more challenging crossings we take on, however there is some pretty spectacular places you will come across on the track like the beautiful elliot falls, twin falls and fruit bat falls all of which provide a great place to cool of or camp for the night.

I go on an adventure up a tropical creek and get stuck in there for the night. I catch lots of big fish, including Barramundi (barra), Mangrove Jack (Mangrove snapper) and Cod (grouper). Totally alone and in the wild I sleep on the boat and have a great time.
Barramundi Fishing, Permit Fishing, Tusk Fish Fishing are among my most popular video's.
Fly fishing Airlie Beach / Whitsunday Islands / Great Barrier Reef / Bowen / Peter Faust Dam / Lake Proserpine area. Filmed using GoPro video camera, edited on an Apple Macintosh using iMovie and sound tracks made using Garageband. Some video's are also made using Youtube's Free Audio Library as the soundtrack.
