www.democracynow.org — Democracy Now! interviews Adrian Lamo, the former hacker who last year informed the U.S. military authorities of his conversations with Army Private Bradley Manning, in which Manning claimed to have leaked a large body of classified documents. In Internet chats with Lamo using a pseudonym, Manning allegedly disclosed he was providing materials to WikiLeaks founder and editor-in-chief Julian Assange. Lamo is now a witness in Manning's trial. "I very much regret the situation that his actions have put him in. He is on my mind every day. I remember what it was to be that young and that idealistic, and when he came to me, he created a situation where there was no right decision. There were simply choices that were between greater and lesser harm. I had to go with the one that resulted in lesser harm, but still resulted in harm," says Lamo. "The leaks have real potential to do harm or hazard. Additionally, they still do long-term damage to U.S. policy with other countries, which, in turn, weakens our international position."

5. Adrian Lamo
Lamo was arrested in 2003 after he managed to hack into the servers of the New York Times, Yahoo! an Microsoft. Lamo had become quite popular in the tech world for helping set up security systems for web servers. However, after the New York Times filed a complaint against him, a warrant was issued for his arrest. He also discovered and reported to U.S authorities that Bradley Manning was leaking classified information on Wikileaks.
4. Jonathan James
At 16 years old, James became the first juvenile to go to jail for hacking. He first hacked into the BellSouth server, but his real trouble started when he broke into the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, an agency in the federal government. He stole usernames and passwords from several military personnel. He even stole important software from NASA! After a six month sentence, he committed suicide in 2008.
3. Gary McKinnon
In 2002 Mr. McKinnon was accused of perpetrating the "biggest military computer hack of all time". McKinnon was accused by the United States of posting a notice on the military's website: "Your security is crap". After the September 11 attacks in 2001, he deleted weapons logs at the Earle Naval Weapons Station paralyzing munitions supply deliveries for the US Navy's Atlantic Fleet. He was never tried.
2. Kevin Mitnick
At the time of his arrest, Kevin Mitnick was the most wanted computer criminal in the US. He began his career in hacking at 15, when he hacked into the L.A Bus system to obtain free bus tickets. Later he broke into Pacific Bell’s server and obtained hundreds of cell phone users data to mask his location from the law. He was arrested and convicted in 1999 to 6 years in prison for 14 counts of wire fraud, among other charges.

In recent years, the Internet group known only as “Anonymous” has been a thorn in the side of many. These “hacktivist” consist of many users who often hack into government, religious or private sector servers as a form of retribution. Many people have been arrested in connection to Anonymous, and government officials have stepped up their counter cyber crime operations due to the efforts of Anonymous.

AKA Hackers Wanted
This film explores the origin of true hackers vs. today's computer criminals by following the adventures of Adrian Lamo and other well-intentioned hackers, who found security holes and pointed them out so they might be fixed, only to eventually be arrested.
Commonly thought of as computer criminals and vandals, a true hacker is an innovative thinker able to 'hack' himself out of a given problem or situation, whether it be computer related or not.
Historically, hackers have accounted for mankind's greatest inventions and discoveries and yet have repeatedly been persecuted for their new ideas by the powerful and fearful.
Experts on cyber-terrorism also examine our societal view of the hacker and debate as to whether or not we should recruit and utilize the skills of the helpful hackers to fight future cyber-wars, instead of continuing to punish what we do not understand.

Adrian Lamo is a Colombian-American threat analyst and "grey hat" hacker. He first gained media attention for breaking into several high-profile computer networks, including those of The New York Times, Yahoo!, and Microsoft, culminating in his 2003 arrest. In 2010, Lamo became embroiled in the WikiLeaks scandal involving Bradley Manning, who was arrested after Lamo reported to federal authorities that Manning had leaked hundreds of thousands of sensitive U.S. government documents.
Lamo was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Mario Lamo-Jiménez and Mary Lamo-Atwood in 1981. He spent his early childhood in Arlington, Virginia, until moving to Bogotá, Colombia around the age of 10. When his family moved back to the United States two years later, they settled in San Francisco, where Lamo lived until he tested out of high school a year early. Popularly called the "homeless hacker" for his transient lifestyle, Lamo spent most of his travels couch-surfing, squatting in abandoned buildings and traveling to Internet cafes, libraries and universities to investigate networks, and sometimes exploiting security holes. Despite performing authorized and unauthorized vulnerability assessments for several large, high-profile entities, Lamo refused to accept payment for his services.

Bradley Edward Manning (born December 17, 1987) is a United States Army soldier who was arrested in May 2010 in Iraq on suspicion of having passed classified material to the whistleblower website, WikiLeaks. He was charged over the following months with a number of offenses, including communicating national defense information to an unauthorized source, and aiding the enemy, a capital offense, though prosecutors said they would not seek the death penalty.
Assigned as an intelligence analyst in October 2009 to an army unit based near Baghdad, Manning was given access to several databases used by the United States government to transmit classified information. He was arrested after Adrian Lamo, a computer hacker, told the FBI that Manning had confided during online chats that he had downloaded material from these databases and passed it to WikiLeaks. The material, much of it published between April and November 2010, included videos of a 2007 helicopter gun attack in Baghdad and the 2009 Granai airstrike in Afghanistan, 250,000 United States diplomatic cables, and 500,000 army reports that came to be known as the Iraq and Afghan War logs. It was the largest set of restricted documents ever leaked to the public.

Julian Paul Assange (
/əˈsɒnʒ/ ə-SONZH; born 3 July 1971) is an Australian computer programmer, political/internet activist, publisher, and journalist. He is best known as the editor in chief and founder of WikiLeaks, a media website which publishes information from whistleblowers. The site acts as a conduit for worldwide news leaks, with a stated purpose of creating open governance.
WikiLeaks has published material about extrajudicial killings in Kenya, toxic waste dumping in Côte d'Ivoire, Church of Scientology manuals, Guantanamo Bay procedures, and banks such as Kaupthing and Julius Baer. In 2010, WikiLeaks published Iraq War documents and Afghan War documents about American involvement in the wars, some of which was classified material. On 28 November 2010, WikiLeaks and its five international print media partners (Der Spiegel, The New York Times, Le Monde, The Guardian and El País) began publishing U.S. diplomatic cables.
Assange was a hacker-activist in his youth, before becoming a computer programmer and then becoming internationally renowned for his work with WikiLeaks. He has lived in several countries and has made public appearances in many parts of the world to speak about freedom of the press, censorship, and investigative journalism. He has received numerous awards and nominations, including the 2009 Amnesty International Media Award, Readers' Choice for TIME magazine's 2010 Person of the Year, the 2011 Sydney Peace Foundation gold medal and the 2011 Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism.Snorre Valen, a Norwegian parliamentarian, nominated him for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize.

In Internet chats with Lamo using a pseudonym, Manning allegedly disclosed he was providing materials to WikiLeaks founder and editor-in-chief Julian Assange. Lamo is now a witness in Manning's trial. "I very much regret the situation that his actions have put him in. He is on my mind every day. I remember what it was to be that young and that idealistic, and when he came to me, he created a situation where there was no right decision. There were simply choices that were between greater and lesser harm. I had to go with the one that resulted in lesser harm, but still resulted in harm," says Lamo. "The leaks have real potential to do harm or hazard. Additionally, they still do long-term damage to U.S. policy with other countries, which, in turn, weakens our international position."

5. Adrian Lamo
Lamo was arrested in 2003 after he managed to hack into the servers of the New York Times, Yahoo! an Microsoft. Lamo had become quite popular in the tech world for helping set up security systems for web servers. However, after the New York Times filed a complaint against him, a warrant was issued for his arrest. He also discovered and reported to U.S authorities that Bradley Manning was leaking classified information on Wikileaks.
4. Jonathan James
At 16 years old, James became the first juvenile to go to jail for hacking. He first hacked into the BellSouth server, but his real trouble started when he broke into the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, an agency in the federal government. He stole usernames and passwords from several military personnel. He even stole important software from NASA! After a six month sentence, he committed suicide in 2008.
3. Gary McKinnon
In 2002 Mr. McKinnon was accused of perpetrating the "biggest military computer hack of all time". McKinnon was accused by the United States of posting a notice on the military's website: "Your security is crap". After the September 11 attacks in 2001, he deleted weapons logs at the Earle Naval Weapons Station paralyzing munitions supply deliveries for the US Navy's Atlantic Fleet. He was never tried.
2. Kevin Mitnick
At the time of his arrest, Kevin Mitnick was the most wanted computer criminal in the US. He began his career in hacking at 15, when he hacked into the L.A Bus system to obtain free bus tickets. Later he broke into Pacific Bell’s server and obtained hundreds of cell phone users data to mask his location from the law. He was arrested and convicted in 1999 to 6 years in prison for 14 counts of wire fraud, among other charges.

In recent years, the Internet group known only as “Anonymous” has been a thorn in the side of many. These “hacktivist” consist of many users who often hack into government, religious or private sector servers as a form of retribution. Many people have been arrested in connection to Anonymous, and government officials have stepped up their counter cyber crime operations due to the efforts of Anonymous.
