J. Stuart Blackton, the author of "The Enchanted Drawing", silent animation movie, is an unsung pioneer in the history of animation possibly because many of his short film projects had techniques that have been improved time and time again. Having said that, "The Enchanted Drawing" (1900) in which he draws a face with a cigar, a glass, and a wine bottle and proceeds to take many of those objects off the drawing in split-time seamless editing has an old-fashioned charm that still resonates some 107 years later. And the various expressions of the drawn man's face whenever any of these objects are taken from him must have truly enchanted audiences of the day. With this and Humorous Phases of Funny Faces, Blackton deserves some recognition for contributing to the art of animation.
While Winsor McCay is often treated as the father of animated film, others like Emile Cohl (working for a studio, unlike McCay) and Stuart Blackton definitely were on the scene before. Their styles are all very different (especially Cohl's), but Blackton does wonderful things with the medium of animation, which are, in spirit, much the same as the animation films and episodes we come to know and love.
James Stuart Blackton (January 5, 1875 -- August 13, 1941) (usually known as J. Stuart Blackton) was an Anglo-American film producer, most notable for making the first silent film that included animated sequences recorded on standard picture film -- "The Enchanted Drawing" (1900) - and is because of that considered the father of American animation. Both stop-motion and drawn animation techniques were used in his films. The first of these films is "The Enchanted Drawing", with a copyright date of 1900 but probably made at least a year earlier. In this film, Blackton the lightning artist sketches a face, cigars, and a bottle of wine. He appears to remove the last drawings as real objects, and the face appears to react. The "animation" here is of the stop-action variety (the camera is stopped, a single change is made, and the camera is then started again) first used by Méliès and others. He was also director of the Silent Era, the founder of Vitagraph Studios.

Based upon the Tennyson poem which itself is based upon the story of the Countess Godiva, an Anglo-Saxon lady who, according to legend, rode naked through the streets of Coventry after her husband promised that he would remit oppressive taxes on his tenants if she agreed to do so nude. The name "Peeping Tom" for a voyeur originates from later versions of this legend in which a man named Tom had watched the woman ride and was struck blind or dead.

The videoclip incudes ALL “Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend “ (Winsor McCay, 1921) episodes : “Bug Vaudeville”,”The Flying House” and “The Pet”.
1. Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend: Bug Vaudeville-1921-Winsor McCay- Creative, Detailed, & Enjoyable-Silent cartoon
“Winsor McCay's 1921 cartoon 'Bug Vaudeville' has almost precisely the same plot and premise as Karel Capek's stage satire 'The Insect Play', which was first produced in Czechoslovakia in 1922. I wonder if Capek saw McCay's cartoon. We have here a series of variety turns by various species of insects and arachnids. In several cases, McCay amusingly matches a particular vaudeville act to an appropriate species: a daddy-long-legs does an eccentric dance, while two tumble-bugs perform as acrobats. Some of the other pairings of species and performance seem more arbitrary: the potato bugs stage a boxing match, while a cockroach is a bicyclist.
McCay uses a framing device to include 'Bug Vaudeville' in his sporadic series of 'Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend' cartoons: a tramp has cadged some cheese from a housewife, and the bugs' antics are apparently his cheese-induced nightmare. In Capek's play, the tramp's slumber is induced by alcohol, and the antics of the various insects are parodic reflections of various forms of human behaviour. McCay, a major newspaper cartoonist in his day, made very few animations because his toons were so labour-intensive: McCay executed all the drawings himself, without the use of 'in-betweeners'. In his early toons, he drew on paper rather than acetate cels, forcing McCay to re-draw background art even when the background didn't change. “ (Author: F Gwynplaine MacIntyre from Minffordd, North Wales)
2. Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend: The Flying House -1921-Winsor McCay- The most lirical silent cartoon
This movie is definitely the most impressive looking one out of the 'Dream of the Rarebit Fiend' animated movies, by Winsor McCay. It's also the longest one and overall it's just far more detailed and stylized looking.
“The Flying House” (an instalment in McCay's 'Rarebit' series) is the most lyrical of his cartoons, and only slightly nightmarish. A woman joins her husband Bert in bed after eating a rarebit. But she awakens to discover that Bert has gone up to the attic to tinker with some odd machinery. It develops that Bert has changed the house into an aeroplane, which he takes into the stratosphere, and then to outer space.
McCay's visuals are impressive, the more so since he drew them all himself without the help of 'in-betweeners'. During the outer-space climax, I was intrigued that he drew Earth from an oblique angle ... rather than the usual cliché of putting it 'right-side up' with the Antarctic lowermost. The flight of the house is lyrical, rapturous, and -- unlike McCay's other 'Rarebit' adventures -- not remotely nightmarish ... until the very ending, when the house explodes and the husband and wife plummet to Earth
3. Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend: The Pet -1921-Winsor McCay- A wild imagination- Silent cartoon
“The Pet” is another entry in Winsor McCay's animated series “Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend”. In this one, a man has just eaten a rarebit of the title. His wife has warned him about having bad dreams for doing so to no avail. As he dreams, we see outside of the house a small animal that's hard to identify but-according to the word put on screen-says, "Meow." The woman picks him up and decides to keep him. She gives him a bath and feeds him milk on a saucer a little bigger than him. After he's done, however, he becomes a little bigger than the bowl which turns over on his entire body as he leans his head forward. He later eats a cat under the table and then an electric lamp on it (and doesn't even get electrocuted!). The husband then goes to the store to get a barrel of rat poison in order to kill this "pet". After the pet eats it, he develops some splotches on his body but they disappear quickly as he keeps growing. He eventually grows as tall as the tallest building in the city as more than dozens and dozens of planes appear and shoot him to pieces as the man finally wakes up...As always, McCay gives great detail in backgrounds that make you almost forget you're watching animation. Many humorous touches throughout as when the "pet" swallows a hose before spewing water through a neighbor's window at a neighbor! And that final sequence with all those pieces of the "pet" falling down. Wow! As with anything that McCay has done, The Pet is certainly essential viewing for animation fans.

Veteran animator and director Don Lusk has one of the most wide–ranging resumes in the industry. He began his career in animation at the Walt Disney studios in 1933 as an in–betweener, but soon rose to the position of Assistant Animator, working with Eric Larsen, Milt Kahl and James Algar. By 1938 he had become a full animator, lending his artistry to such classics as “Pinocchio,” “Fantasia,” “The Wind and the Willows,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Peter Pan,” “Lady and the Tramp,” “Sleeping Beauty” and “101 Dalmatians.” Of his legendary animation of Tchaikovsky’s Arabian Dance from Fantasia, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston would write: “The scenes of the glowing white fish in the Arabian Dance section of ‘Nutcracker Suite’ amazed the whole Studio. No one had ever seen such a gossamer effect, and very few knew how it had been achieved.” After leaving Disney, Don went to work for Walter Lantz. He also animated for Chuck Jones on the 1962 feature “Gay Purr–ee.” Don then moved to Hanna–Barbera, where he spent the next three decades working as an animator, animation director and director before retiring in 1993. At the age of 101, Don Lusk remains one of the most accomplished and respected elder statesmen of animation.
On January 31, Don Lusk received the Winsor McCay Award in recognition of lifetime or career contributions to the art of animation.

Princess Nicotine; or, The Smoke Fairy is a 1909 five minute silent film directed by J. Stuart Blackton based on an earlier musical starring Lillian Russell.
In the film, a smoker (Paul Panzer) falls asleep and is visited by two fairies (one of which is played by Gladys Hulette). Audiences marveled at the primitive special effects featuring the fairies interacting with objects much larger than themselves.
Princess Nicotine; or, The Smoke Fairy was the first instance of tobacco product placement (for Sweet Corporal cigarettes and cigars) in the movies.
In 2003, the Library of Congress deemed it "significant" and preserved it in the National Film Registry.

History of animation
Animation refers to the creation of a sequence of images—drawn, painted, or produced by other artistic methods—that change over time to portray the illusion of motion. Before the invention of film, humans depicted motion in static art as far back as the Paleolithic period. In the 1st century, several devices successfully depicted motion in animated images.

Early examples of attempts to capture the phenomenon of motion into a still drawing can be found in paleolithic cave paintings, where animals are often depicted with multiple legs in superimposed positions, clearly attempting to convey the perception of motion. [2]
An earthen goblet discovered at the site of the 5,200-year-old Burnt City in southeastern Iran, depicts what could possibly be the world’s oldest example of animation. The artifact bears five sequential images depicting a Persian Desert Ibex jumping up to eat the leaves of a tree.[3]
Ancient Chinese records contain several mentions of devices that were said to "give an impression of movement" to human or animal figures,[4] but these accounts are unclear and may only refer to the actual movement of the figures through space.[5]
In the 19th century, the phenakistoscope (1832), zoetrope (1834) and praxinoscope (1877), as well as the common flip book, were early animation devices that produced an illusion of movement from a series of sequential drawings, but animation did not develop further until the advent of motion picture film and cinematography in the 1890s.
The cinématographe was a projector, printer, and camera in one machine that allowed moving pictures to be shown successfully on a screen which was invented by history's earliest film makers, Auguste and Louis Lumière, in 1894.[6] The first animated projection (screening) was created in France, by Charles-Émile Reynaud, who was a French science teacher. Reynaud created the Praxinoscope in 1877 and the Théâtre Optique in December 1888. On 28 October 1892, he projected the first animation in public, Pauvre Pierrot, at the Musée Grévin in Paris. This film is also notable as the first known instance of film perforations being used. His films were not photographed, but drawn directly onto the transparent strip. In 1900, more than 500,000 people had attended these screenings.
A projecting praxinoscope, 1882, here shown superimposing an animated figure on a separately projected background scene
The first film that was recorded on standard picture film and included animated sequences was the 1900 Enchanted Drawing,[7] which was followed by the first entirely animated film - the 1906 Humorous Phases of Funny Faces by J. Stuart Blackton,[8] who, because of that, is considered the father of American animation.
The first animated film created by using what came to be known as traditional (hand-drawn) animation - the 1908 Fantasmagorie by Émile Cohl
Charlie in Turkey (1916), an animated film by Pat Sullivan for Keen Cartoon Corporation.
In Europe, the French artist, Émile Cohl, created the first animated film using what came to be known as traditional animation creation methods - the 1908 Fantasmagorie.[9] The film largely consisted of a stick figure moving about and encountering all manner of morphing objects, such as a wine bottle that transforms into a flower. There were also sections of live action in which the animator’s hands would enter the scene. The film was created by drawing each frame on paper and then shooting each frame onto negative film, which gave the picture a blackboard look.
The author of the first puppet-animated film (The Beautiful Lukanida (1912)) was the Russian-born (ethnically Polish) director Wladyslaw Starewicz, known as Ladislas Starevich.[citation needed]
The more detailed hand-drawn animations, requiring a team of animators drawing each frame manually with detailed backgrounds and characters, were those directed by Winsor McCay, a successful newspaper cartoonist, including the 1911 Little Nemo, the 1914 Gertie the Dinosaur, and the 1918 The Sinking of the Lusitania.[10]
During the 1910s, the production of animated short films, typically referred to as "cartoons", became an industry of its own and cartoon shorts were produced for showing in movie theaters. The most successful producer at the time was John Randolph Bray, who, along with animator Earl Hurd, patented the cel animation process which dominated the animation industry for the rest of the decade.
El Apóstol (Spanish: "The Apostle") was a 1917 Argentine animated film utilizing cutout animation, and the world's first animated feature film.[11] Unfortunately, a fire that destroyed producer Frederico Valle's film studio incinerated the only known copy of El Apóstol, and it is now considered a lost film.
Computer animation has become popular since Toy Story (1995), the first feature-length animated film completely made using this technique.
In 2008, the animation market was worth US$68.4 billion.[12] Animation as an art and industry continues to thrive as of the mid-2010s, because well-made animated projects can find audiences across borders and in all four quadrants. Animated feature-length films returned the highest gross margins (around 52%) of all film genres in the 2004-2013 timeframe.[13]

Biographical account of the work of Thomas Edison and Edison Studios.
Opens with montage of still images including portrait of Eadweard Muybridge's and his photographs of horses, and Edison with a cylinder phonograph. Footage of Edison's and William Dickson's prototype kinetoscope. The horizontal feed camera, and footage of 'exercising boy from Newark' film from 1891.
Clip of Edison's Boxing Cats film from 1894. Edison and his wife demonstrate the fascinating and complex Kinetoscope film travels horizontally across dozens of spools. Clip of The Pie Eating Contest from 1897 shows to men with their hands behind their back eating huckleberry pie. Clip of Dickson doffing his hat.
Footage of man unfurling a spool of film, and a paper copy of the print. Footage of Fred Ott's Sneeze from 1894. Footage of Fatima of 'Little Egypt' who performed belly dancing at the 1893 Chicago World Fair. The May Irwin - John C. Rice Kiss of 1896 shows the male protagonist twirling his moustache before kissing the leading lady. Footage of a muscular man flexing in Sandow the Strongman of 1894. Series of footage of trains, including train in Tokyo, Philadelphia Express, the Black Diamond Express. Market scene in Mexico. Street scene in Hawaii.
Clips of Eagle Dance of Pueblo Indians and The Circle Dance both of 1898, in the latter dozens of male dances can be scene dancing in a slow revolving circle, with two tepees in the background.
Baseball game in 1898, and also a home movie by Edison showing a baseball game turning into a scuffle. A cigarette commercial from 1897 for Admiral Cigarettes shows a person jumping out of an oversized cigarette box and then proceeding to hand out cigarettes, while three seated men dressed in theatrical dress, including a 'red Indian' style headdress with feathers and another man dressed in what appears to be an 'Uncle Sam' outfit, unfurl a banner which reads 'WE ALL SMOKE'.
Edison's 'revolving photographic building', also known as the Black Maria. The building is unusual with its steep sloping hinged roof which opens to allow in sunlight. A short excerpt of the sharpshooter Annie Oakley shooting targets thrown up into the air by a man knelt in front of her throwing up targets into the air. William Dickson's Experimental Sound Film where Mr Dickson records the sound to accompany the kinetoscope film of him playing violin, while two of his male colleagues dance together. A revolving merry-go-round (carousel) is ridden by women wearing long dresses. A re-enactment of an ambulance attending a street car accident. An instructional film of rescue and resuscitation for the United States Coastguard shows men wearing white uniforms pulling a tethered man onto shore before laying him over a barrel shaped object to resuscitate him. Footage of the Spanish - American War, including both real footage of the wreck of battleship USS Maine. Also recreation footage of men firing rifles from a trench before two are shot and receive attention from field medics bringing over a stretcher. The Galveston Hurricane footage shows rescuers searching for bodies in 1900 and chopping through mounds of planks of wood and other debris. An excerpt from the newsreel footage 'Rocking the Gold in the Klondike' of 1901 shows gold miners shaking sluice boxes.
A moment of comedy ensues in a film called 'What happened down 23rd street' as we see a couple walking down a New York street busy with pedestrians and horses and carriages, a woman accompanied by a male walks over a street air vent blowing air upwards and also blowing the skirt of the unfortunate woman up almost to her knees. In 'Fun in a Butcher's Shop' a 'butcher' and his accomplices operate 'Swatzenfugle's Patent Sausage Machine' which involves dogs being dropped into the machine while the butcher turns a handle crank to produce a string of sausages, until finally one of the sidekicks throws another person into the sausage meat machine. 'What happened in the barber shop' shows barbers being somewhat distracted from their duties by two pairs of legs in stockings at the top of a flight of stairs. Optical illusions are employed in the Bibulous Clothier to show a clothier having to cope with a shape shifting client whose gets, taller, fatter, or thinner every time the clothier returns with a new garment.
Happy Hooligan in an Airship utilizes a split screen effect. A charming piece of footage from the film The Enchanted Drawing by the artist J. Stuart Blackton shows a man drawing a face, a wine bottle and a glass on an easel before removing the bottle and glass from the artwork which become real objects. The drawing becomes independently animated with expressions, such as disgruntlement as the artist removes a cigar from its mouth.
