Learn how capitalism arose from the industrial revolution, and then gave rise to socialism. Stops along the way include the rise of industrial capitalism, mass production, disgruntled workers, Karl Marx, and the Socialist Beard. Bernie Sanders to Talk at Georgetown on Democratic Socialism in America.
November 18, 2015 – Presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont will speak at Georgetown this week about what it means to be a democratic socialist in America.
The talk, which takes place on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the university’s historic Gaston Hall, is sponsored by the university’s newly created Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service at the McCourt School of Public Policy.
Sanders’ talk will be webcast live at politics.georgetown.edu.
“This speech is one of those defining moments in a presidential campaign,” said Mo Elleithee, the institute’s executive director and a 20-year veteran of national politics. “For weeks, Senator Sanders and his team have been signalling that he intends to have a thoughtful discussion about what it means to be a ‘democratic socialist.’ We are psyched he chose Georgetown as the place to have that conversation.”
The institute has extended an invitation to every major candidate in the 2016 presidential election to speak at Georgetown.
Following his remarks, Sanders will engage in a question-and-answer session with the university community, moderated by Elleithee. A Georgetown University ID is required for entry into the event.
Georgetown students, faculty and staff can share questions and join the conversation at @GUPolitics and #BernieAtGU.
Launched in the fall of 2015, the Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service is dedicated to reconnecting young people with the idea that politics is a noble vehicle for public service.

Bernie Sanders delivered his long-awaited speech advocating for democratic socialism in America. He pointed to the example of FDR’s New Deal which was part of a massive social movement to secure rights for workers against the corporate/owner class. Ana Kasparian (The Point), John Iadarola (Think Tank), and Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show Podcast), hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"In a speech at Georgetown University on Thursday afternoon, Sen. Bernie Sanders, the independent from Vermont who's seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, did something unprecedented for a major candidate: He made the case for democratic socialism.
The address, which Sanders wrote himself, had been in the works for weeks, and in it Sanders embraced a label that has most often been used to attack him. (At the first Democratic presidential debate last month, front-runner Hillary Clinton distanced herself from Sanders' "democratic socialist" views.) At times, this address sounded much like Sanders' stump speech: He railed against Wall Street, the "ruling class," and the billionaire Koch brothers. But he tied those stances to an ideology that he contended was an essential part of the United States' heritage.”*

Here's how the State of the Union Turned into a Socialist RANT
The best thing about President Obama’s State of the Union speech was that it will be his last one. Obama basically treated it as a giant pat-yourself-on-the-back party where he self-congratulated himself on any little thing he could find. He even boasted about things he hasn’t done, like curing cancer, as if giving the go ahead was the same as accomplishing it.

A paper published Jan. 13, 2016, in Scientific Reports shows that cells in a bacterial community take a communal approach to antibiotic resistance, with individual cells assuming, and trading off, varying levels of resistance.
This time-lapse video demonstrates an element of this finding.
The diverse colors at the opening of the video show the range of antibiotic resistance in the bacterial community. The more cyan-hued the cells are, the greater their resistance. After an antibiotic is introduced, the most cyan-colored cells "filament," turning into elongated tubes, as a way of surviving the antibiotic. The darker cells, which had the least antibiotic resistance, die, as shown by a red dye indicating cell death. After the antibiotic disappears, the filamented cells will return to normal growth via dividing.
Members of a bacterial community, the study shows, essentially tag team levels of resistance.
This finding could have application for how persistent infections like those associated with cystic fibrosis are treated. Altering the frequency and timing of antibiotic treatment could be a way of waiting out an infection as bacteria trade off antibiotic resistance among its members, enabling the drug to kill the entire culture.

wn.com/Why Do Some Infections Persist Blame Bacterial Socialism, Says New Study

Question: What is the difference between Socialism and Communism and how does it relate to your political views?
"If you're looking for a broad stroke view, Communism was a government that was put together where 1% told the other 99% what to do."
"The communists took away the church so people would only have allegiance to the state."
"Socialism became a bad word because it was married to dictatorships. It was married to a dictatorship that kept the church in business."

In practice Chomsky has tended to emphasize the philosophical tendency of anarchism to criticize all forms of illegitimate authority. Many have long praised Scandinavian countries for their high levels of welfare provision and for their economic and social outcomes. It is, indeed, true that they are successful by most reasonable measures.
However, Scandinavia’s success story predated the welfare state. Furthermore, Sweden began to fall behind as the state grew rapidly from the 1960s. Between 1870 and 1936, Sweden enjoyed the highest growth rate in the industrialized world. However, between 1936 and 2008, the growth rate was only 13th out of 28 industrialized nations. Between 1975 and the mid-1990s, Sweden dropped from being the 4th richest nation in the world to the 13th richest nation in the world.
Many analyses of Scandinavian countries conflate correlation with causality. It is very clear that many of the desirable features of Scandinavian societies, such as low income inequality, low levels of poverty and high levels of economic growth, predated the development of the welfare state. It is equally clear that high levels of trust also predated the era of high government spending and taxation. All these indicators began to deteriorate after the expansion of the Scandinavian welfare states and the increase in taxes necessary to fund it.

PREPARED REMARKS
Senator Bernie Sanders on Democratic Socialism in the United States
NOVEMBER 19, 2015
In his inaugural remarks in January 1937, in the midst of the Great Depression, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt looked out at the nation and this is what he saw.
He saw tens of millions of its citizens denied the basic necessities of life.
He saw millions of families trying to live on incomes so meager that the pall of family disaster hung over them day by day.
He saw millions denied education, recreation, and the opportunity to better their lot and the lot of their children.
He saw millions lacking the means to buy the products they needed and by their poverty and lack of disposable income denying employment to many other millions.
He saw one-third of a nation ill-housed, ill-clad, ill-nourished.
And he acted. Against the ferocious opposition of the ruling class of his day, people he called economic royalists, Roosevelt implemented a series of programs that put millions of people back to work, took them out of poverty and restored their faith in government. He redefined the relationship of the federal government to the people of our country. He combatted cynicism, fear and despair. He reinvigorated democracy. He transformed the country.
And that is what we have to do today.
And, by the way, almost everything he proposed was called “socialist.” Social Security, which transformed life for the elderly in this country was “socialist.” The concept of the “minimum wage” was seen as a radical intrusion into the marketplace and was described as “socialist.” Unemployment insurance, abolishing child labor, the 40-hour work week, collective bargaining, strong banking regulations, deposit insurance, and job programs that put millions of people to work were all described, in one way or another, as “socialist.” Yet, these programs have become the fabric of our nation and the foundation of the middle class.
Thirty years later, in the 1960s, President Johnson passed Medicare and Medicaid to provide health care to millions of senior citizens and families with children, persons with disabilities and some of the most vulnerable people in this county. Once again these vitally important programs were derided by the right wing as socialist programs that were a threat to our American way of life.
That was then. Now is now.
Today, in 2015, despite the Wall Street crash of 2008, which drove this country into the worst economic downturn since the Depression, the American people are clearly better off economically than we were in 1937.
But, here is a very hard truth that we must acknowledge and address. Despite a huge increase in technology and productivity, despite major growth in the U.S. and global economy, tens of millions of American families continue to lack the basic necessities of life, while millions more struggle every day to provide a minimal standard of living for their families. The reality is that for the last 40 years the great middle class of this country has been in decline and faith in our political system is now extremely low.
The rich get much richer. Almost everyone else gets poorer. Super PACs funded by billionaires buy elections. Ordinary people don’t vote. We have an economic and political crisis in this country and the same old, same old establishment politics and economics will not effectively address it.
If we are serious about transforming our country, if we are serious about rebuilding the middle class, if we are serious about reinvigorating our democracy, we need to develop a political movement which, once again, is prepared to take on and defeat a ruling class whose greed is destroying our nation. The billionaire class cannot have it all. Our government belongs to all of us, and not just the one percent.
We need to create a culture which, as Pope Francis reminds us, cannot just be based on the worship of money. We must not accept a nation in which billionaires compete as to the size of their super-yachts, while children in America go hungry and veterans sleep out on the streets.
In practice Chomsky has tended to emphasize the philosophical tendency of anarchism to criticize all forms of illegitimate authority. He has been reticent about theorizing an anarchist society in detail, although he has outlined its likely value systems and institutional framework in broad terms. According to Chomsky, the variety of anarchism which he favors is
"... a kind of voluntary socialism, that is, as libertarian socialist or anarcho-syndicalist or communist anarchist, in the tradition of, say, Bakunin and Kropotkin and others. They had in mind a highly organized form of society, but a society that was organized on the basis of organic units, organic communities. And generally, they meant by that the workplace and the neighborhood, and from those two basic units there could derive through federal arrangements a highly integrated kind of social organization which might be national or even international in scope. And these decisions could be made over a substantial range, but by delegates who are always part of the organic community from which they come, to which they return, and in which, in fact, they live."
On the question of the government of political and economic institutions, Chomsky has consistently emphasized the importance of grassroots democratic forms. Accordingly current Anglo-American institutions of representative democracy "would be criticized by an anarchist of this school on two grounds. First of all because there is a monopoly of power centralized in the state, and secondly – and critically – because the representative democracy is limited to the political sphere and in no serious way encroaches on the economic sphere."
Despite his marginalization in the mainstream US media, Chomsky is one of the most globally famous figures of the left, especially among academics and university students, and frequently travels across the United States, Europe, and the Third World. He has a very large following of supporters worldwide as well as a dense speaking schedule, drawing large crowds wherever he goes. He is often booked up to two years in advance. He was one of the main speakers at the 2002 World Social Forum. He is interviewed at length in alternative media.[96] Many of his books are bestsellers, including 9-11.[92]
The 1992 film Manufacturing Consent, was shown widely on college campuses and broadcast on PBS. It is the highest-grossing Canadian-made documentary film in history.[97] Chomsky's popularity has become a cultural phenomenon. Bono of U2 called Chomsky a "rebel without a pause, the Elvis of academia". Rage Against the Machine took copies of his books on tour with the band. Pearl Jam ran a small pirate radio on one of their tours, playing Chomsky talks mixed along with their music. R.E.M. asked Chomsky to go on tour with them and open their concerts with a lecture (he declined). Radiohead has recommended Chomsky's works on their various websites and Thom Yorke in particular is an admirer.
Chomsky lectures have been featured on the B-sides of records from Chumbawamba and other groups.[98] Many anti-globalization and anti-war activists regard Chomsky as an inspiration.
Chomsky is widely read outside the US. 9-11 was published in 26 countries and translated into 23 languages;[99] it was a bestseller in at least five countries, including Canada and Japan.[92] Chomsky's views are often given coverage on public broadcasting networks around the world—in marked contrast to his rare appearances in the US media. In the UK, for example, he appears periodically on the BBC.[100]
Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez was known to be an admirer of Chomsky's books. He held up Chomsky's book Hegemony or Survival during his speech to the United Nations General Assembly in September 2006.

The Red Bureaucracy: Authoritarian Socialism vs Libertarian Socialism

In anticipation of comments suggesting Leninists and anarchists should 'unite against the capitalists':

Notions of anarchists and statists 'uniting' against the capitalists have a pretty clear conclusion every time - the statists get their way and the anarchists get thrown under the bus.
In anticipation of Leninists calling me an anti-communist, let me reiterate that I am criticising authoritarian socialism for advocating means which are ineffective in establishing communist ends. I think it is true that the system created in the USSR and so on was merely replacing one hierarchy with another, however unlike anti-communists I do not believe it follows from this that hierarchy is somehow inevitable or written into our genetics. Hierarchy is, however, written into the state.

The Truth About Democratic Socialism
We keep hearing about the "new" form of socialism called Democratic Socialism being touted by men like Bernie Sanders. Tens of thousands are flocking to rallies where they hear Bernie's cries for greater wealth equality and freebies for all. Bernie is quick to correct anyone who refers to him as a run of the mill socialist. He is a Democratic Socialist and don't you confuse the two.
But what is the difference? What separates Bernies world view from that of your run of the mill socialist? Today on the show I dive into that discussion in detail uncovering the truth about what Democratic Socialism is, and what it means for your life.
I also pose a simple question to you. If socialism doesn't protect the worker, who does? It's one thing to rip apart the failures and misconceptions about socialism; it's another thing entirely to present a compelling argument about how we do protect those who work in our factories and department stores.
I think this is a discussion you're going to like. Listen NOW!
