Bahrain ( البحرين ), officially the Kingdom of Bahrain (Arabic: مملكة البحرين About this sound Mamlakat al-Baḥrayn), is a small island country situated near the western shores of the Persian Gulf. It is an archipelago with Bahrain Island, the largest land mass, at 55 km (34 mi) long by 18 km (11 mi) wide. Saudi Arabia lies to the west and is connected to Bahrain by the King Fahd Causeway while Iran lies 200 km (124 mi) to the north across the Persian Gulf. The peninsula of Qatar is to the southeast across the Gulf of Bahrain. The population in 2010 stood at 1,234,571, including 666,172 non-nationals.[7]
Bahrain is the site of the ancient land of the Dilmun civilisation.[8] Bahrain was one of the earliest areas to convert to Islam in 628 AD. Following a period of Arab rule, Bahrain was occupied by the Portuguese in 1521, who in turn were expelled in 1602 by Shah Abbas I of the Safavid dynasty under the Persian Empire. In 1783, the Bani Utbah clan captured Bahrain from Nasr Al-Madhkur and has since been ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family, with Ahmed al Fateh as Bahrain's first hakim. In the late 1800s, following successive treaties with the British, Bahrain became a protectorate of the United Kingdom. In 1971, Bahrain declared independence. Formerly a state, Bahrain was declared a Kingdom in 2002. Since early 2011, the country has experienced sustained protests and unrest inspired by the regional Arab Spring, particularly by the majority Shia population.[9]
Bahrain has the first post-oil economy in the Persian Gulf.[10] Since the late 20th century, Bahrain has invested in the banking and tourism sectors.[11] The country's capital, Manama, is home to many large financial structures. Bahrain has a high Human Development Index (ranked 48th in the world) and was recognised by the World Bank as a high income economy.

The 'Little India' district in Bahrain has moved closer to becoming a reality as discussions are underway to rejuvenate the area around a Hindu temple in Manama to acknowledge the strong relations the country has with its Asian expatriate community. The project was announced by the then Culture Ministry in August as part of Bahrain's tourism strategy for the next three years and will cover an area around Bab Al Bahrain and the Hindu temple.
"We are aiming to do a bit of work on the alleyways, such as having a street with shops serving Indian food, and a celebration of the Indian festival of colours and overall making it focus on India in all aspects," said Heba Abdul Aziz, tourism affairs adviser and project head.
"Discussions are now underway on how to make the place look more like India", she said. "This is a gesture to acknowledge the strong relations Bahrain has with its Asian expatriate community, which has always been part of the history, trade and the social fabric of the GCC"
The Little India project is a way to artificially package the Indian experience in Bahrain and make it a tourist attraction. Discussions are now taking place with the Indian business community, whose members could potentially spearhead the project.
Jaihind Television is a Malayalam channel based out of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It was launched on August 17, 2007 in Delhi by Indian National Congress President and United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, with the aim of meeting the aspirations of the family and the nation. It has consistently remained at the forefront with innovative programming, and continuously setting new industry benchmarks in news coverage and entertainment packaging. It also boasts of a multigenre infotainment package for the whole family.
This channel is promoted by the Congress party with the support of non-resident Indians. The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president is the ex-officio Chairman of the Channel, while Shri. MM Hassan, former Minister and official spokesperson of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, holds the office of the Managing Director. Veteran journalist KP Mohanan, winner of the Rajiv Gandhi Award for excellence in Journalism, is the Chief Executive Officer, while JS Indukumar, formerly of Asianet, is the Executive Editor for News.

Known for its oil and pearls, Bahrain is also home to many large structures, including the Bahrain World Trade Center and the Bahrain Financial Harbour, with a proposal in place to build the 1,022 m (3,353 ft) high Murjan Tower. The Qal'at al-Bahrain (the harbour and capital of the ancient land of Dilmun) was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix takes place at the Bahrain International Circuit.

The Central Business District (CBD) of Manama, Bahrain, is the most vital part of the capital. Many of the city's hotels, office buildings, shops and restaurants are located in the CBD. It lies along the northern coast of Manama.
The CBD is considered one of the best shopping areas in the city; it has the Manama Souq (market, in Arabic), located near the Bab Al Bahrain (the Gateway of Bahrain). The old souq with its old world charm has a wide variety of goods, anything from spices, condiments, textiles, electronics to a dazzling array of jewelry.
In addition, the Bahrain World Trade Centre and the Bahrain Financial Harbour; this has Bahrain's tallest towers, and many of the country's largest banks and companies are also situated in the CBD.
Moda Mall is a high-end shopping complex in the ground floor of Bahrain World Trade Centre.. The Mall is home to some 160 designer stores, including Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Christian Lacroix, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Gucci, Hermés, Kenzo, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Emporio Armani, Furla, Roberto Cavalli, Vertu, Ermenegildo Zenga, Agent Provocateur, Versace, Bottega Veneta, Escada, Max Mara, Loewe, Mathew Williamson, Valentino, Viktor & Rolf, amongst others. The mall will also house some of the finest jewellery stores such as De Beers, Tiffany & Co., Boucheron, Chopard, Chanel Jewellery, Van Cleef & Arpels and Folli Follie among others.

Manama (Arabic: المنامة Al Manāma) is the capital and largest city of Bahrain, with an approximate population of 155,000 people. Long an important trading center in the Persian Gulf, Manama is home to a very diverse population. After periods of Portuguese and Persian control and invasions from the Al Sauds and Oman, Bahrain established itself as an independent nation during the 19th century period of British hegemony. In the 20th century, Bahrain's oil wealth helped spur fast growth and in the 1990s a concerted diversification effort led to expansion in other industries and helped transform Manama into an important financial hub in the Middle East.
Manama was mentioned in Islamic chronicles at least as far back as 1345. It was conquered by Portugal in 1521 and then by the Persians in 1602. Since 1783 it has been under the control of the Al-Khalifa dynasty. Manama was declared a free port in 1958, and in 1971 it became the capital of independent Bahrain.

Bahrain ( البحرين ), officially the Kingdom of Bahrain (Arabic: مملكة البحرين About this sound Mamlakat al-Baḥrayn), is a small island country situated near the western shores of the Persian Gulf. It is an archipelago with Bahrain Island, the largest land mass, at 55 km (34 mi) long by 18 km (11 mi) wide. Saudi Arabia lies to the west and is connected to Bahrain by the King Fahd Causeway while Iran lies 200 km (124 mi) to the north across the Persian Gulf. The peninsula of Qatar is to the southeast across the Gulf of Bahrain. The population in 2010 stood at 1,234,571, including 666,172 non-nationals.[7]
Bahrain is the site of the ancient land of the Dilmun civilisation.[8] Bahrain was one of the earliest areas to convert to Islam in 628 AD. Following a period of Arab rule, Bahrain was occupied by the Portuguese in 1521, who in turn were expelled in 1602 by Shah Abbas I of the Safavid dynasty under the Persian Empire. In 1783, the Bani Utbah clan captured Bahrain from Nasr Al-Madhkur and has since been ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family, with Ahmed al Fateh as Bahrain's first hakim. In the late 1800s, following successive treaties with the British, Bahrain became a protectorate of the United Kingdom. In 1971, Bahrain declared independence. Formerly a state, Bahrain was declared a Kingdom in 2002. Since early 2011, the country has experienced sustained protests and unrest inspired by the regional Arab Spring, particularly by the majority Shia population.[9]
Bahrain has the first post-oil economy in the Persian Gulf.[10] Since the late 20th century, Bahrain has invested in the banking and tourism sectors.[11] The country's capital, Manama, is home to many large financial structures. Bahrain has a high Human Development Index (ranked 48th in the world) and was recognised by the World Bank as a high income economy.

The 'Little India' district in Bahrain has moved closer to becoming a reality as discussions are underway to rejuvenate the area around a Hindu temple in Manama to acknowledge the strong relations the country has with its Asian expatriate community. The project was announced by the then Culture Ministry in August as part of Bahrain's tourism strategy for the next three years and will cover an area around Bab Al Bahrain and the Hindu temple.
"We are aiming to do a bit of work on the alleyways, such as having a street with shops serving Indian food, and a celebration of the Indian festival of colours and overall making it focus on India in all aspects," said Heba Abdul Aziz, tourism affairs adviser and project head.
"Discussions are now underway on how to make the place look more like India", she said. "This is a gesture to acknowledge the strong relations Bahrain has with its Asian expatriate community, which has always been part of the history, trade and the social fabric of the GCC"
The Little India project is a way to artificially package the Indian experience in Bahrain and make it a tourist attraction. Discussions are now taking place with the Indian business community, whose members could potentially spearhead the project.
Jaihind Television is a Malayalam channel based out of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It was launched on August 17, 2007 in Delhi by Indian National Congress President and United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, with the aim of meeting the aspirations of the family and the nation. It has consistently remained at the forefront with innovative programming, and continuously setting new industry benchmarks in news coverage and entertainment packaging. It also boasts of a multigenre infotainment package for the whole family.
This channel is promoted by the Congress party with the support of non-resident Indians. The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president is the ex-officio Chairman of the Channel, while Shri. MM Hassan, former Minister and official spokesperson of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, holds the office of the Managing Director. Veteran journalist KP Mohanan, winner of the Rajiv Gandhi Award for excellence in Journalism, is the Chief Executive Officer, while JS Indukumar, formerly of Asianet, is the Executive Editor for News.

It is an archipelago with Bahrain Island the largest land mass at 55 km (34 mi) long by 18 km (11 mi) wide. Saudi Arabia lies to the west and is connected to Bahrain by the King Fahd Causeway while Iran lies 200 km (124 mi) to the north across the Persian Gulf. The peninsula of Qatar is to the southeast across the Gulf of Bahrain. The population in 2010 stood at 1,234,571, including 666,172 non-nationals.[1]
Bahrain is believed to be the site of the ancient land of the Dilmun civilization[4] and later came under the rule of successive Parthian and Sassanid Persian empires. The country was one of the earliest areas to convert to Islam in 628 AD. Following a period of Arab rule, Bahrain was occupied by the Portuguese in 1521, who in turn were expelled in 1602 by Shah Abbas I of the Safavid empire. In 1783, the Bani Utbah tribe captured Bahrain from the Qajars[5] and has since been ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family, with Ahmed al Fateh the first hakim of Bahrain. In the late 1800s, following successive treaties with the British, Bahrain became a protectorate of the United Kingdom. Following the withdrawal of the British from the region in the late 1960s, Bahrain declared independence in 1971. Formerly a state, Bahrain was declared a "Kingdom" in 2002. Since early 2011, the country has experienced sustained protests and unrest inspired by the regional Arab Spring, particularly by the majority Shia population.[6] Oil was discovered in Bahrain in 1932, the first such find on the Arabian side of the Persian Gulf.
Bahrain has the first "post-oil" economy in the Persian Gulf because the Bahraini economy does not rely on oil.[7] Since the late 20th century, Bahrain has heavily invested in the banking and tourism sectors.[8] The country's capital, Manama is home to many large financial structures. Bahrain has a high Human Development Index (ranked 48th in the world) and was recognised by the World Bank as a high income economy. Bahrain was designated a major non-NATO ally by the George W. Bush administration in 2001.

While Arab Spring uprisings found favor with many in the West, unfortunately for the people of Bahrain, their own revolution was largely forgotten. But it never went away — for three years, near-nightly protests have been brutally quashed by militarized security forces.
Earlier this year, VICE News correspondent Ben Anderson travelled to London to speak with Nabeel Rajab, the unofficial leader of Bahrain’s uprising, and then headed undercover to Bahrain, where he met activists, protestors, grieving parents, and alleged torture victims.

As we mark the 4th anniversary of the uprising, protests continue to sweep across Bahrain, despite a heavy handed response from the security forces. With high profile leaders and activists in jail, the government continues its attack on the opposition. Activists say human rights abuses remain at an all time high and there is little in the way of reform. In this edition of Infocus we go undercover to investigate how the regime is cracking down on its citizens.
In 2011, in the wake of the Arab uprisings, both Sunni and Shia Bahrainis marched to the Pearl roundabout, protesting against the ruling family's monopoly on all power. The authorities responded by violently cracking down on the protestors; many were killed and injured. Mass arrests, detentions, trials and ongoing torture became a recurring feature.
Four years later, human rights activists say very little has changed, and life for many Bahrainis has worsened. Despite demonstrations being banned, protests continue on a daily basis. Critics accuse the authorities of creating an apartheid system, as the country's majority Shia population continue to be the targets of the ongoing repression and human rights violations.

Earlier this year, VICE News correspondent Ben Anderson traveled to Bahrain undercover to document the ongoing protests there. Bahrainis — inspired by the Arab Spring — have been taking to the streets every night for almost four years, calling for democracy.
One of the people Ben interviewed was Yousif Badah. His son, Ali Badah, was killed while protesting three years ago, when a police SUV repeatedly ran into him, pinning him against a wall.
On the third anniversary of his son's death, Yousif and others held a vigil for Ali. That vigil turned into a march, and was similarly met with police violence, this time resulting in injury to Yousif himself.

Bahrain’s largest Shia opposition bloc has condemned a bomb blast that has killed a policeman in the capital Manama. Al-Wefaq called on the opposition parties to remain peaceful and avoid violence. During her pregnancy, the woman managed to hide her growing belly from her employer for months, but she ended up giving birth to the baby prematurely before she was about to return to Indonesia.
She was found with a newborn baby in her lap inside the bathroom at her employer's home by other servants as friends gathered in the family’s house.
The boy’s lawyer Ebtasim Al Sabbagh said that the family didn’t know what was going on between the two until the baby was born.
During the investigation, she at first claimed that she was raped by the boy, but it was later determined that she actually had a relationship with him.

Relatives of those on board the Gulf Air flight, which crashed into shallow waters on Wednesday night after circling and trying to land in Bahrain, have been waiting for news of their loved ones.
All 143 onboard the Gulf Air flight from Cairo to Manama, including 36 children, died in the crash.
Relatives gathered at an airport in Bahrain waiting for confirmation of their worst fears.
There were no survivors from the doomed flight GF072 and by daybreak all the bodies had been recovered.
63 of the passengers were Egyptians, many of them headed for jobs in Bahrain or elsewhere in the Gulf.
Gulf Air has organised a special flight to bring 134 relatives from Egypt to Manama airport so they can help with the identification of the dead.
As well as the Egyptian passengers, there were 34 Bahraini, 12 Saudi Arabian, nine Palestinian, six from the United Arab Emirates, three Chinese, two British and one each from Canada, Oman, Kuwait, Sudan, Australia and a diplomatic courier from the United States.
The crew included two Bahrainis and one each from Oman, the Philippines, Poland, India, Morocco and Egypt.
An investigation into the cause of the accident has begun.
Dr Ali Ahmadi, Acting Vice President of Personnel, Gulf Air said the black boxes have been found and he added that there was no suggestion of any terrorist activity.
Gulf Air's most recent disaster came in 1983, when a 737-200 crashed during its approach to Abu Dhabi after a bomb exploded in the baggage compartment.
The crash killed all six crew members and 105 of 111 passengers.

"It is certainly something difficult to express, as a tragic event, obviously reaction - well you've seen certainly all the news, and the government officials have made statements already before about this, but an accident happened and I believe Gulf Air, in coalition with all government authorities, are trying to deal with it with their best effort."

Answer: "There is no news so far of that, you know there are certain processes that are followed as far as aviation experts are concerned. The black box has been already recovered to our understanding and I believe that that black box, the news will certainly be published as and when (an) analysis has been established. "

More crackdown in Bahrain- a court in Manama sentences 12 people to life imprisonment and strips them of their nationality.
A judicial source in the kingdom said the convicts have carried out six bomb attacks against police in 2013 and 2014. The defendants were also charged with attempting to kill policemen and possessing explosives.Many people have been arrested for membership in what Manama calls terrorist organizations since the outbreak of pro-democracy protests in 2011. Security forces have responded to the demonstrations with an iron fist. Dozens of people have been killed and many more wounded or jailed since then.
Head of Bahrain International Mission Qasim al-Hashimi says the Bahraini regime has never paid attention to the global human rights bodies ‘condemnation of the kingdom’s rights violations.

This archaeological site features a tell, a mound created by continuous, overlapping civilizations.
Continuous occupation of this area is thought to have begun around 2300 BC and continued into the 16th century.

HELLO EVERYONE! Welcome back to my channel! It is the last video of my Middle Eastern adventures. I know, I know, there's so much unseen footage BECAUSE either I didn't have my camera with me OR no video was allowed, OR I took photos instead. Not to worry, full detailed blogposts will be up on my blog http://www.abstractorganza.com so check back for updates! If you're bummed out I missed filming something you wanted to see, not to worry, I will be back in the Middle East VERY SOON. Any requests on what to see just comment below!

-My friend took me abaya shopping at Abu Hail Centre which is about a 15-20 minute drive from JBR. It was my first time shopping for abayas so I was having a field day! So many patterns, prints, colors, at very reasonable prices! These shop owners are more than willing to bargain a good price with you as well so don't be scared to haggle! I got a beautiful abaya for only $80 thanks to my lovely pal who talked her way to a great price! Just FYI, this is a small indoor shopping centre mostly selling abayas & muslim wear so try to dress conservative as it is frequented by locals!
-Dubai was surprisingly chilly. During the day there was a cool breeze with clear, sunny skies. At night the temperature would fall drastically around high 50s, low 60s. It was beautiful throughout my stay however the water WAS a bit too cold for me at Jumeirah Beach. It was perfect tanning weather though!
-Make sure you visit the Spice & Gold Souks in Old Dubai. And while you're at it, take an "abra" down Dubai Creek, it costs just 1 dirham and you can easily get to the souks by the abra!
-FlyDUBAI has deals throughout the year, flying out of Dubai Terminal 2 which is its local low cost airline. We flew out to Bahrain to visit some friends and got a great deal on flights! If you're in Dubai make sure to check out Fly Dubai to explore other countries nearby! For it being a low cost airline, I was very impressed. I had lots of legroom to stretch, on board entertainment (f.r.i.e.n.d.s THANK THE LORD!) complimentary drinks, friendly staff, and mood lighting. Definitely recommend flying with Fly Dubai! Just make sure you tell your driver TERMINAL 2.
-The Domain Hotel in Bahrain is an absolute must if you're in Manama. The staff was very helpful, rooms are one of the best and state of the art and the views are just to DIE FOR! Not to mention, The Domain has a great Spa, several restaurants and even a lounge where ladies drink for free EVERY DAY. Could it get any better?
-If you're ever in Bahrain, make sure you take a scenic drive to Amwaj Islands. Visit the Dragon Hotel to eat at their restaurant and be prepared to have lunch with a fabulous view!
-Bahrain was amazing and I will make sure to film more when I return!
