In the early 1400s, the third Ming Emperor, YongLe, moved the capital of China to Beijing. In 1406, he began construction of a new 'Forbidden City' that would include an imperial palace complex of vast proportions - a grand design.
Located at the exact center of the ancient city of Beijing, the palace was the home and center of power for 24 emperors during the mid to later Ming and Qing dynasties.
In this guide, we open the doors of the Forbidden City and tour inside this beautiful palace with its 500 years of history. The guide includes over 600 photographs, 2 videos, and describes in detail all the main places of interest. It also presents a useful map.
An overview of the palace
A bird's eye view of the layout and location
Now officially renamed as the 'Palace Museum' ('GuGong' in Chinese, meaning simply 'Old Palace'), the extensive grounds cover over 700,000 square meters. There are around 800 buildings that have about 9,000 rooms in total. The Forbidden City is the world's largest palace complex. Indeed, it is listed by UNESCO as the world's largest collection of preserved ancient wood-based structures and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987.
Although the founations are stone and the walls made of brick, the buildings themselves are constructed almost entirely of wood. The skills for this are quite amazing, but there is the problem of fire, especially with candlelight and incense burning. That's why ne sees many large vats all around the palace, to store water for any outbreak of fire. The vats are raised on stone feet so that a fire could be lit underneath to stop the water freezing during harsh winter weather.
The Forbidden City is encircled by a 50 meter wide moat then a 10 meter high purple wall; the perimeter is almost 3.5 kilometers long and the enclosed area about twice the size of Tian'AnMen Square. It lies at the center of YongLe's reconstructed Beijing, and symbolically between the Temple of Heaven (TianTan) to the south, and the Temple of Earth (DiTan) to the north along a central axis 8 kilometers in length. It was to be a reflection of heavenly order and a symbol of the emperor's heavenly mandate. At the heart of the walled city, and also a walled inner city, the palace was a city within a city.
The Forbidden City is located directly to the north of Tian'AnMen Square and can be accessed from the square via Tian'AnMen Gate. This takes you through the grand and enveloping south gate of the palace (WuMen), the 'front door'.
The Forbidden City remains a national symbol and an image of its entrance gate is part of the official seal of the People's Republic of China.
The last emperor of China, PuYi, ascended the throne aged 3, but just four years earlier the republcan movement brought an end to imperial era in 1912. PuYi was forced to stay in the palace during the following twelve years but was evicted in 1924, and in 1925 ordinary folk entered the palace for the first time.
Today, the Palace Museum is open to the public and has become one of the world's most popular tourist attractions. Visitors can wander through the traditional palace architecture, view the art and artefacts in exhibitions and recreations, and learn of the many legends involving the imperial family and court. Electronic audio tours in many languages are available. Over 1 million treasures are stored here in total.

The Chinese is one of the worlds oldest civilizations. The capital, Beijing with its 11 million inhabitants is now a modern city with skyscrapers, highways and shopping malls. Its several ancient monuments are all oases of silence. The Tien’anmen square is possibly the largest and most famous square of the world. The former imperial palace, surrounded by wall was called ‘the forbidden city’ because a commoner could not enter here. At least that beautiful is the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven, where pieces from the ancient artist await the visitors. When in Beijing, one must not forget the Buddhist temples, and the zoo, where the very rare panda bears are living. Let us not forget about the gastronomical part of China, since the country’s cuisine is one of the best on Earth. From Beijing we can travel to the old capital, Xian, where the famous clay soldiers can be seen. The Ming Dinasty Tombs are only 50 kilometres far from Beijing, but the Great Wall of China is not far either.

Noah - After 3 weeks of overland travel starting from HongKong, we were ready to enter the final phase of our trip through China with a high-speed train ride to Beijing.
Under normal circumstances, we would have taken the slower yet cheaper over night train, but because we failed to plan our route far enough in advance, we we’re left with few other options.
In the end though, we didn’t let the extra cost bother us too much, since it gave us an opportunity to experience high speed train travel for the first time, while also furthering our goal of traversing the length of the country entirely overland.
Carrying a quarter of the world’s total rail traffic, China’s railway network is one of the largest and busiest in the world. In 2007, high speed rail service was introduced and since then, ridership has skyrocketed to over 1.3 million passengers per day on the HSR network alone.
In December of 2012, the high speed route between the Xi’an North and Beijing West railway stations was opened.
With the trains approaching a maximum speed of 300km/hr, the journey between these two monster cities can be made in just under 5 hours.
Lynn - Built in 1406, the Forbidden City is an enormous complex that consists of 980 buildings, spanning 180 acres. It took 14 years to complete this behemoth city and required over a million laborers and 100,00 artisans.
The Forbidden City was named as such, because it was forbidden for any commoner to enter. Not only that, any commoner who even saw the emperor with his commoner eyes was killed, even if the emperor was outside the city gates! So I’m not going to lie, when I crossed through that threshold as a foreigner, it gave me goosebumps.
For 500 years, 24 emperors lived and ruled from this ceremonial and political center. Many servants and even some emperors lived their entire lives within these walls. We started to feel the same sense of being in a bubble as all the halls, gardens and temples started to look the same.
There are signs in English scattered all over the city but even after reading them, the significance of what we were looking at was still a bit lost on us. Our favorite signs though, were the ones that included the imperial names of the buildings, some of our favorites being: Belvedere of Embodying Benevolence, Pavilion of Auspicious Clarity, Palace of Gathered Elegance and...
The irony of the once forbidden city, is that it’s now one of the most touristed places in all of China with over 7 million visitors a year! Here you can also get your fill of knick knacks and even a DVD experience of flying over the city… if you’re into that sort of thing! You have to use your imagination, but if you find yourself in a quiet corner of the city, it’s possible to get a feeling of being in ancient China. Hopefully, you’ll imagine yourself as royalty and not as a concubine… or a eunuch.
