East Asia Symposium: Shifting Great Power Relations in East Asia
There is now no doubt that the greatest shifts in power are taking place in East Asia. In 1980, according to IMF statistics, in PPP terms, China’s share of the global economy was only 2.2% while that of the US was over ten times larger. Yet, by 2014, China’s share had become larger. Similarly, there have been equally significant shifts taking place among the three great Asian powers of China, Indi

Travel video about destination South East Asia.
South East Asia is a fascinating, atmospheric and exotic world full of unspoiled nature and cultural treasures and a region in which both past and present live side by side and unite in a wonderful way. Myanmar, The Land Of Golden Pagodas: for decades the rulers of what was once known as Burma closed the country’s doors to the outside world and many of its fine religious sanctuaries were badly neglected but they have now gradually been given the respect that they deserve. Inlay Lake is home to the Inthas, one of the many tribes that came to Myanmar from various of South East Asia’s neighbouring countries. Throughout the area are the floating plantations of the Inthas on which tomatoes, cucumbers and beans are cultivated. A journey on the Shan State Express provides passengers with a fascinating insight into the life of the Shan people whose lives are dominated by agriculture. The north west of Myanmar is known for its many splendid sacred buildings such as Mingun’s Hsinbyume Pagoda that was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It was constructed according to the architectural rules of Hindu Buddhist cosmology and symbolizes the World Mountain of Meru.. One of Taiwan’s most important centres of arts and crafts is located in the west of the island, Lukang, an ancient and idyllic town full of age-old traditions whose large number of beautiful temples is most impressive. In Cambodia and around forty kilometres north of Phnom Penh is the former capital city of Udong. Today only the remains of the city’s former splendid buildings indicate that it was the last centre of Angkor’s power with hundreds of dwellings and temples. The ruins of Ayutthaya indicate the impressive dimensions of the former capital of ancient Thailand and one of the mightiest royal cities in South East Asia.

There is now no doubt that the greatest shifts in power are taking place in East Asia. In 1980, according to IMF statistics, in PPP terms, China’s share of the global economy was only 2.2% while that of the US was over ten times larger. Yet, by 2014, China’s share had become larger. Similarly, there have been equally significant shifts taking place among the three great Asian powers of China, India and Japan. As their relative weights shift, adjustments have to be made and will be made.
China has sought to assuage concerns over its rising power. The United States, prompted by concerns over the impact of China’s long-term ambitions on its strategic weight as well as those of its allies in the region, has announced a “pivot” or rebalance towards the Asia-Pacific region. Japan is also undergoing a period of soul-searching in its domestic and foreign policies as it seeks to deal with the changing geopolitical landscape. India, which is traditionally not a major player in the East Asian region, is now becoming a significant player as a result of its warming ties with the United States, Japan, and ASEAN. A security and economic community, ASEAN plays a significant role in shaping and influencing the regional architecture. What do these changes in the strategic and policy postures of major powers in the region entail for the stability and prosperity of the region?
In this open discussion panel, our list of panelists will share their views and opinions, and answer pressing questions from the public.
The distinguished panelist consists of:
1) Prof Kishore Mahbubani, Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, NUS
2) Prof Michael H. Armacost, Shorenstein Distinguished Fellow at the Stanford University
3) Prof Cui Liru, Senior Advisor at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations
4) Dr C. Raja Mohan, Head of Strategic Studies and Distinguished Fellow of the Observer Research Foundation
5) Prof Takeshi Shiraishi, President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies
6) Mr Peter Ho, Senior Advisor of the Centre of Strategic Futures
================================================
This opening panel is part of the East Asia Symposium conference held at the Fullerton Hotel on 11 - 12 August 2015. This conference is a donor sponsored event under the Centre on Asia and Globalisaion (CAG), a research centre in LKY School. CAG is a research centre focused on producing quality academic research relevant to public policy, concentrating on how globalisation impacts Asia and Asia’s increased role in an integrated world. Its motto “Objective Research with Impact” reflects the Centre’s commitment to ensuring its analysis informs policy and decision makers in and about Asia. This takes place through a combination of rigorous academic inquiry, expert collaboration, high level dialogue, public outreach, strategic networks and capacity building and training.

================================================

Beautiful Vietnam! HD Flycam - Landscapes. Travel Guide
Vietnam is one of the most beautiful countries in South East Asia, with stunning landscapes, lush paddy fields, ethnic cultures, idyllic beaches & chaotic yet dynamic & charming cities.
With Vietnam’s long history of colonisation & War, there is a mixture of Eastern & Western influences whether it be in the guise of Chinese or French food or architecture, yet Vietnam is still very much Vietnam in its own right. The delicious food also signifies Vietnam’s personality; aromatic, gentile, strong & spicy!
The language is tonal & even the sounds of the traffic has its own language. It is truly amazing to see the amount of motorbikes & how one motorbike can hold so many people or transport such huge & sometimes strange objects! Crossing the road is certainly something you need to learn as the Vietnamese do not stop, instead they just ride or drive around you.
The spirit of the old & modern co exists in a country that is fast moving & developing in tourism. You will see a lot of beautifully preserved old colonial buildings, temples & Pagodas intermingled with modern ones.
With a population of over 86 million, Vietnam is ranked as the 13th most populous country in the world! Despite a huge population, you will always find children & people making time to say “hello” and you will certainly feel welcomed with open arms & warm smiles!
We hope this information page will help you to consider, not only volunteering in Vietnam to help the children we support but also to tour around our beautiful country on your time off & get to interact with the locals, culture & stunning landscapes that Vietnam has to offer, as well as enjoy the delicious food!

The Spread of Industrialization in East Asia: Pacific Rim Economies (1989)
The economy of East Asia is one of the most successful regional economies of the world. It is home of some of the world's largest and most prosperous economies ...
The economy of East Asia is one of the most successful regional economies of the world. It is home of some of the world's largest and most prosperous economies : China, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea.
Major positive factors have ranged from favorable political-legal environments for industry and commerce, through abundant natural resources of various kinds, to plentiful supplies of relatively low-cost, skilled and adaptable labor.
In modern societies, a high level of structural differentiation, functional specialization, and autonomy of the economic system from government is a major contributor to industrial-commercial growth and prosperity. Currently in the Far East, trading systems are relatively open; and zero or low duties on imports of consumer and capital goods etc. have considerably helped stimulate cost-efficiency and change.
Free and flexible labor and other markets are other important factors making for high levels of business-economic performance.
East Asian populations have demonstrated rapid learning capabilities – skills in utilizing new technologies and scientific discoveries – and putting them to good use in production. Work ethics in general tend to be highly positive.
Finally, there are relatively large and fast-growing markets for consumer goods and services of all kinds.
East Asia became an area of economic power starting with the Meiji Restoration in the late 19th century when Japan rapidly transformed itself into the only industrial power outside Europe and the United States. Japan's early industrial economy reached its height in World War II when it expanded its empire and became a major world power. After its defeat and economic collapse after the war, Japan's economy recovered in the 1950s with the post-war economic miracle in which rapid growth in the Japanese economy propelled the country into the world's second largest economy by the 1980s.
In the early 1960s, the British colony of Hong Kong became the first of the four Asian Tiger economies by developing strong textile and manufacturing industries and by the 1970s, had solidified itself as a global financial center and was quickly turning into a developed economy.[2] Following in the footsteps of Hong Kong, the nations of South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore soon quickly industrialized thanks to government policies. By 1997, the four Asian Tiger economies joined Japan as East Asia's developed economies. Additionally, the economy of Macau, then a Portuguese colony, was also experiencing rapid growth during this period through textile manufacturing and the development of a gambling industry, which resulted in high levels of foreign investment into the territory.[3] Macau replaced Las Vegas as the world's largest gambling center in 2007.[4]
Present growth in East Asia has now shifted to China and the Tiger Cub Economies of the Southeast Asian countries of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. As of early 2013, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore are the only East Asian nations that are considered developed markets by all economic indexes. Since the end of the 20th century, Japan's role as the principal economic power in the region has shifted to the Four Asian Tiger economies and more recently, China, which became world's second largest economy in 2010.[5] Furthermore, a 2012 report by The Economist noted that South Korea is expected to overtake Japan in terms of GDP per person at power purchasing parity by 2017, a feat already accomplished by Macau (2010), Taiwan (2010), Hong Kong (1997), and Singapore (1993).
Among the major policy choices commonly adopted in East Asia, and noticeably less so elsewhere in the developing world are openness to foreign trade, significant levels of government savings and an emphasis on education for both boys and girls. While these attributes were far from universally applied, they are conspicuously present in the region to a much larger degree than is the case elsewhere.
In 2005, East Asia had more than one-third of the world’s population, an estimated 2,075 Billion people. Growth during the decade is expected to 0.79% per annum, pushing the total to 2,154 million by 2010. South-east Asia is expected to grow more than twice as fast (1.32% p.a.) as North-east Asia (0.60% p.a.). 65.5% of the population is working age (15-59), slightly higher than the global average 61.4%.
The North-east / South-east divide holds for other demographic indicators, too. The average age in the North-east was 33.1 years in 2005, and 26 years in South-east Asia. Life expectancy (74.1 years vs. 70) is not as distinctly different, although infant mortality rates differ by nearly a third: 21.8 per 1,000 in North-east Asia vs. 28.3 in South-east Asia.

They met in Seoul, but what are the take aways from the meetings between Park, Abe, and Li? Tension in the South China Sea has been brewing for some time, but now that The Hague is getting into the mix, will it escalate things at a faster pace? These stories and more from the region, this week.
What are the key take aways from the Seoul Summits?
This past weekend Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and South Korean President Park Guen-hye met in Seoul. You know by now, it was the first such meeting between the three countries and pundits placed the bar so low for the gathering, that they called it a success that they met. This week on the podcast Michael Cucek, Adjunct Professor Waseda University in Tokyo, unpacks the summit weekend.
Tension brews in the South China Sea
Beijing asserts the South China Sea is their sovereign territory, and while Vietnam and the Philippines have made small challenges to that claim, it wasn’t until the United States got into the game that the war of words between competing interests truly started to heat up. But even with these stronger words being wielded, has tension in the region truly escalated to palpable levels? Scott Harold, Deputy Director, of the RAND Corporation’s Center for the Asia Pacific Policy has the answer.
In China, one child is not enough
According to a statement from Communist Party leaders in Beijing, married couples will be afforded the opportunity to have a second child, if they so choose, once "a final plan for the policy change will be ratified by the annual session of China's top legislature,” which will take place in March 2016. But some argue, changing the policy might be too little too late... and prove ineffective at increasing population growth.
Muslims face uncertain future as Myanmar election looms
Sunday, November 8th, Myanmar will hold general elections as it moves away from brutal military rule to a more democratic society. While some call that vote, historic, not everyone is going to be able to vote. Rohingya Muslims, which the state does not claim are among the disenfranchised and say their future remains uncertain.
South Korean government gets into history books
South Korea's government on Tuesday said it would publish history textbooks for use in schools beginning in 2017, taking a step necessary to put an end to the spread of misinformation and "ideological bias”. The government says many private textbooks now used by middle and high schools try to glorify arch-rival North Korea by discrediting the achievements of the capitalistic South. However, fueled suspicion about President Park Geun-hye's motive behind the policy.
Beijing and Taipei hold historic meeting
This weekend in Singapore,Chinese President Xi jinping and Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou will meet. It would mark the first face-to-face meeting between the two heads of state since the nationalists lost the Chinese civil war and retreated to Taiwan in 1949.
Raping UBER driver sentenced to life
One of the chief criticisms of UBER, is that unsavory elements manage to sneak through the vetting process and end up hurting passengers in some way. The stories that typically surface the most, is when a driver sexually assaults a passenger. This week an Indian court handed down a life sentence to one driver who took things too far.
