For the past decade, New Zealanders Joanne and Gareth Morgan have been living the semiretired lifestyle of their dreams, traveling around the world on motorcycles alongside a few of their closest friends. They've traversed all seven continents on their bikes, with routes as varied as Venice to Beijing, Florida to northern Alaska, and South Africa to London, just to name a few. Gareth funds his own trips, many of which he uses to pursue philanthropic endeavors, particularly in the social-investment space. He is able to do so with money he's made as an economist and investment manager—one who has earned the reputation for criticizing unethical practices in New Zealand's financial-services industry.
In late August, the Morgans embarked on their most ambitious journey yet, at least physically. The real journey began years ago, when they decided they wanted to ride the Baekdudaegan, a mountain range that stretches the length of North and South Korea's shared peninsula. After countless hours of negotiation and coordination with both governments, they were granted permission. It was, the Morgans believe, the first time anyone's ever traveled through both countries like that since the partitioning of Korea in 1945. By making the trip they hoped to demonstrate how Koreans can come together over what they have in common. To symbolize this, the Morgans took some stones from Paektu, a holy mountain in the North, and brought them to Hallasan, a similarly sacred peak in the South.
Joanne and Gareth shot the entirety of their trip, the footage from which they have graciously allowed us to cut into a short film that will premiere on VICE.com this month. In some ways, the footage makes the Korean coast look alternately like California, China, and Cuba. It's a beautiful view few foreigners have seen, and even if planning the road trip straight through the Demilitarized Zone required working within parameters set by the highly choreographed and restricted confines of North-South Korean diplomacy, this was a journey worth documenting from start to finish.

North Korea has come up with a new way to bring cold hard cash into its isolated country: export North Korean workers to slave away in the Siberian forest (often without telling them they're no longer in North Korea). We set out to investigate these camps and almost landed ourselves in quite a bit of trouble.

This is a documentary on my 12 days’ experiences in North Korea. The country is indeed a dystopian state that resembles every bit of Oceania of George Orwell’s 1984. You can find an equivalence here for everything from the Big Brother to the two-minute-hate.
North Koreans' total loyalty and piety for their dictators was also absolutely mind-blowing.
I am not a professional and this film is only intended to give you a sense of what’s happening in the most isolated place on Earth. It is truly a shame such a regime still exists in the year of 2015.
Sorry if the quality of some parts of the film aren't ideal since North Korean government places a heavy restriction on filming equipments for any foreigners. My guides also forbid us from filming with more than one device for the most part.
Equipments used: GoPro Hero4 and iPhone 5S.

Find out why a small number of North Korean defectors are deciding to return to their repressive homeland? About 25,000 North Koreans have escaped their homeland and resettled in South Korea over the past 20 years. The journey is long and dangerous, but once defectors arrive South Korean citizenship is guaranteed. Lucy Williamson reports for Newsnight.

There are 27,000 North Korean defectors who escaped through life threatening dangers. They came to the South with big hope but were discouraged due to the language barrier. They were discriminated and ignored mostly because of the way they talk, with unfamiliar accents and vocabulary. Young North Korean defectors were no exceptions. They had a hard time adjusting to new schools. We believed Koreas’ reunification would be possible only when these young defectors can get good education. So we created the South Korean-North Korean translator, which you cannot even find in Google.

North and South Korea are, both legally and philosophically, in a state of war. While the guns may be silent, the conflict between the two countries has now become one of propaganda.
With the assistance of the Human Rights Foundation, North Korean defectors now in South Korea have been launching hydrogen-filled balloons across the 38th parallel — carrying both money and propaganda. In late 2014, a balloon launch sparked a brief exchange of gunfire between North and South Korean soldiers, and even more recently, Pyongyang has promised that hellfire will rain on South Korea if any copies of the controversial Hollywood comedy The Interview make it across the border.
VICE News traveled to Seoul to meet frontline soldiers in this information war — and to attend a clandestine launch of propaganda balloons into the Hermit Kingdom.

Urban centers are competing with their own suburbs and neighboring states for jobs and corporate headquarters.
At the national level, it might be a zero-sum calculation.
But at the local level, there are definite winners and losers.
Smaller towns have many advantages that can be exploited.
Complicated problems often need complicated solutions.
In The Difference: How the Power of Diversity Creates Better Groups,
Firms, Schools, and Societies by Scott Page,
a clear case is laid out that diversity of opinions leads to better decisions for businesses,
governments and societies.
He isn’t merely looking at racial and ethnic diversity –
although he touches on it –
he’s looking at diversity of education level, socio-economic status and more.
The wider the range of ideas being considered,
the more likely one of them is the correct solution.
Along with helping find better solutions, demographics also pose their own problems.
Aging populations in some cities mean that city agencies have to shift their service offerings.
They can lead to a declining tax base or changes in an area’s housing market.
On the other end of the spectrum, a baby boom in an area can cause huge shifts in the schools.
Finding a baby boomlet in our nation's cities has surprised many.
So in keeping with our principle that we wanted cities that are livable for everyone,
we worked with our partners at the Martin Prosperity Institute to analyze Census data
and create two custom data points.
One variable measured racial and ethnic diversity,
while the other measured age diversity. We also looked at population growth.
Is this community thriving or shrinking?
The average score across all the cities we measured was 50.
The cities that scored well in this area show that they are growing,
livable cities – for everyone.

The Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) is the founding and ruling political party of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). The WPK is the sole governing party of North Korea, although it coexists with two other legal parties making up the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland. It was founded in 1949 with the merger of the Workers' Party of North Korea and the Workers' Party of South Korea.
The WPK is organized according to the Monolithic Ideological System and the Great Leader, a system and theory conceived by Kim Yong-ju and Kim Jong-il. The highest body of the WPK is formally the Congress; however, a congress has not been convened since the 6th in 1980. Although the WPK is (in theory) organizationally similar to communist parties, in practice it is far less institutionalized and informal politics plays a larger role than usual. Institutions such as the Central Committee, the Secretariat, the Central Military Commission (CMC), the Politburo and the Presidium have much less power than that formally bestowed on them by the party's charter. Kim Jong-un is the current WPK leader, serving as First Secretary and CMC chairman.
The WPK is committed to Juche, and at the 4th Conference (held in 2012) the party charter was amended to state that Kimilsungism–Kimjongilism was "the only guiding idea of the party". At the 3rd Conference (held in 2010) the WPK removed a sentence from the preamble expressing the party's commitment "to building a communist society", replacing it with a new adherence to songun (military-first politics). Party ideology has recently focused on perceived imperialist enemies of the party and state, and on explaining the Kim family's dominance of the political system.

남북회담 결렬 한반도 정세에 영향 미치나
The first high-level inter-Korean talks under President Park Geun-hye ended without an agreement over the weekend not even a date set up to meet again.
It′s left many wondering how that will impact cross-border relations here on the Korean peninsula... and whether there remains hope for another such meeting between the two Koreas in the near future.
Arirang′s foreign affairs correspondent Kwon Soa reports.
Seoul′s unification ministry has no specific plans yet to make contact for the next round of inter-Korean talks,... after negotiations broke down over the weekend.
But,... unification minister Hong Yong-pyo said Monday,... that the government will continue its efforts to realize peace on the Korean Peninsula step by step,... and leave the door open for further conversations.
He added that it′s difficult to solve all pending issues in one go.
Nevertheless,... concerns are rising,... that inter-Korean relations may take a downturn,... as expectations of a positive outcome,... or at least a date for the next meeting,... went unrealized.
While some experts say,... the latest setback does not warrant pessimism,... others believe it will, at least, take some time for the next encounter.
″Even if the North wants to reopen talks in the near future,... the South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises will take place at the end of February or beginning of March next year.
North Korea is likely to raise the issue of halting those drills,... along with pushing for the reopening of the Mount Kumgang tourist resort.
That will complicate matters,... so I think the prospects are bleak.″
The first vice ministerial level negotiations in eight years,... that were held from Friday to Saturday,... were called off by the North Korean delegation,… as it felt that Seoul was reluctant to resume tours to the North′s Mt. Kumgang resort-a significant source of income for Pyongyang.
Seoul pulled the plug on the tours in 2008, after a South Korean tourist was shot dead by a North Korean soldier.
While South Korea focused mainly on regularizing reunions of families separated by the Korean war,... Seoul made it clear that the two issues must be addressed independently.

국방부 "北, 내년 핵실험 시도·SLBM 발사 지속 예상"
North Korea is expected to continue carrying out nuclear as well as submarine ballistic missile launch tests next year. That′s according to South Korea′s defense ministry.
Arirang′s national defense correspondent, Kim Hyun-bin, joins us from the defense ministry in Seoul.
Hyun-bin, how did this assessment come about? Well Conn-young....The South Korean military says the abrupt cancellation of North Korea′s Moranbong Band′s concert in Beijing has strained the two countries relations and could lead to military provocations by the North.
During a meeting of military commanders on Monday,… to evaluate all aspects of South Korea′s military, including its improvements,… a security assessment for North Korea emphasized the continued nuclear and ballistic missile threats the regime poses.
The Ministry of National Defense responded saying South Korea′s military will retain its readiness to counter those possible threats.
″The Ministry of National Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff will also maintain their joint readiness posture against North Korea′s nuclear testing and missile launches. South Korea will upgrade its anti-missile defense system under the South Korea-United State alliance.″
Speaking in front of 150 generals and heads of defense-related government organizations, defense minister Han Min-koo emphasized that North Korea′s leader Kim Jong-un maintains a constant reign of terror, and that the South′s military needs to stand firm against the communist regime′s unpredictable military provocations.
″The best way to counter enemy provocations is to abide by solid principles, which also restores public trust.″
Han also emphasized that South Korea′s military′s unchanging value is to win wars under any circumstances.
The ministry also says Korea plans to increase its counter terrorism abilities next year to better guard against security threats from Pyongyang.
″This includes establishing a cyber defense research center to counter the North′s growing cyber threats.″ Conn-Young
Indeed, readiness paramount to counter the possibility of North Korea conducting nuclear and missile tests in the near future..
Thanks, Hyunbin. That was our Kim Hyun-bin reporting from the Ministry of National Defense.

North Korean pop sensations the Moranbong Band are set to strengthen the bond between China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea this weekend via song and dance. The group arrived yesterday in Liaoning province for their overseas debut which, according to Xinhua, will be happening at the Beijing's National Center for the Performing Arts from December 12 to 14.
Formed by Kim Jong-un himself in 2012, the Moranbong Band has achieved success in North Korea with such timeless ditties as "My Country is the Best!" and "Let's Study." There's also a lot of hypnotically shiny costumes and perilous stilettos -- so, basically not too far removed from mainstream South Korean girl group fare, except with more legit instrument-playing.
The DPRK Korean Central News Agency has stated that the tour, which will also feature the military State Merited Chorus, has the purpose of "deepening friendships" between nations. To this end, the setlist is reportedly packed with Chinese-language tunes.

North Korea lies somewhere between a 1930′s Soviet Union frozen in time and a dark, futuristic vision of society... as imagined back in the 70′s.
"Land of Whispers" invites you to visit arguably the most unique and isolated travel destination in the world - not to criticize, but to observe and listen. Aside from usual highlights such as Pyongyang or Arirang, this unique one-man documentary brings you to areas such as Chongjin or Wonson, still virtually unknown to even google or wikipedia. There, I attempt to pierce through the ever-present 'national mythology' and as much as possible, I try to connect with people - such as the waitress mesmerized by tablet computers, or a tour guide cautiously fascinated by modern pop culture.

North Korea was identified as part of the axis of evil by George Bush. Taking an archive-based trip through North Korea's recent history, we find out it's probably a fair assessment.
'The Real Dr Evil' explores the rise of Kim Jong-il after his father, Kim II- sung's, death. His father, who is referred to as 'Great Leader' by North Korea, was a highly praised and well-respected leader -the founder of North Korea and commander of the fifth largest standing army in the world.
Following the death of Kim II- sung, Kim Jong- il was left to fulfil the position of his father, however many doubted he had the right skills to follow in his footsteps. He was seen as a black sheep as rarely taken seriously. Everyone felt that Kim Jong- il would struggle to keep up to his father's standards. Were they right?
'The Real Dr Evil' follows the fascinating journey of Kim Jong- il -- from his childhood experiences, through his education, to his controversial leadership. When the great economic collapse of the mid-90s struck, Jong-il left many of his citizens to suffer. But as many began to lose hope, Jung-il began approaching many western countries for help. Many perceived this distress signal positively, others did not.

North Korean travel experts have slammed the BBC for putting local guides at risk, saying the country would hold them responsible for the actions of the journalists who posed as LSE students on a tour of the country.
And two tour guides speaking to HuffPost UK said it was relatively easy for anyone to visit the country, and even obtain a journalist visa.
The London School of Economics has expressed fury at BBC journalists who went undercover on a student trip to North Korea, claiming the corporation recklessly endangered students. The BBC claims the students were informed of the risks, necessary to take to get into the country.

Plot / Reviews
The Schoolgirl's Diary (or The Journal of a Schoolgirl) is a 2006 North Korean film directed by Jang In-hak. It debuted at the 2006 Pyongyang Film Festival as one of two films produced domestically that year, and was released in France at the end of 2007. - Wikipedia
The film depicts a North Korean teenager’s struggle to understand her father’s devotion to his country, and to scientific achievement at the expense of his own family’s happiness. Spending the vast majority of his time at work as a computer engineer in a distant town, he leaves his two daughters, wife, and mother-in-law to live in their dilapidated rural home. In questioning her father’s values, the rebellious teen begins to defy her mother, a hardworking librarian who spends her evenings translating scientific articles for her absentee husband. The protagonist realizes how selfish she has been only after her father makes a major breakthrough in his scientific research and is lavished with praise for his self-sacrifice and devotion to the state. The film’s screenwriters reportedly received guidance in drafting the script from North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.
...The Schoolgirl’s Diary was reportedly watched by over 8 million North Koreans, nearly one-third of the population of the DPRK. A French company purchased the distribution rights for the film in French-speaking European countries, a first for a North Korean film, but the film was poorly-received by French moviegoers, and was shown in only five theaters across France in 2007. ... -- North Korea International Documentation Project
A self-absorbed teen learns to respect her parents' hard work and devotion in "The Schoolgirl's Diary," a well-lensed and largely underplayed North Korean dramedy whose curiosity value could be turned into specialty Western sales by devoted distribs. Pic won't come close to replicating the massive local success it had in it's August release (a reported 8 million admissions, roughly a third of the population), but it reps a slick snapshot of contempo life in the hermit state. -- Derek Elley

In Order to Live: Yeonmi Park's North Korean Defector Story

“I didn’t know what freedom was,” says Yeonmi Park, author of In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl's Journey to Freedom. “I didn’t even know the word. I didn’t know the concept. I never heard of that word, ‘freedom’. To me, the happiest thing was having food.”
Yeonmi's story begins with her first steps out of North Korea on March 31, 2007. She crossed the frozen Yalu River with her mother in the dead of night, arriving in China with only a vague idea what to do next. She was only thirteen years old. It was the beginning of a harrowing, years-long journey that would take her across China, through the vast Gobi desert, all the way to the Mongolian border, before finally reaching South Korea by plane.
It took exceptional strength of character for Yeonmi to survive the journey. Living outside of the law, she was subjected to constant abuse; starvation and suicide were rarely far away. Her father crossed the border to join her, but he died of untreated cancer a few months later.
“My father died without knowing even this kind of democracy exists in the world," she told Reason TV. "He didn’t even know this much food was available in the world. And if I could've had the things that Americans throw away, I never would’ve escaped North Korea. That’s how much we were desperate.”
Yeonmi Park's survival story has captivated thousands of readers and propelled her into the spotlight around the world. But how much of it is true?
Pyongyang has produced a lengthy video that attempts to discredit key parts of story. In melodramatic fashion, "Park Yeon Mi, The Puppet of the Human Rights Plot" vilifies Yeonmi and her mother, accusing them of being agents of the United States. Doubters have emerged from outside North Korea, as well, calling her a “celebrity defector”. Critics say they've found discrepancies in her life story and inaccuracies in her depiction of her native country.
For her part, Yeonmi insists on the truth of her story. Some details, she says, were changed to protect family members still living in North Korea. Other events, such as the sexual abuse she endured during her defection, have been shrouded in shame. “I had a reason to hide my secret,” she told Reason TV. “I didn’t want to admit I was raped when I was thirteen years old.” She has attributed other misstatements to her poor command of the English language.
As compelling as her story is, the stakes couldn’t be higher for the community of tens of thousands of North Korean refugees worldwide. Any exaggeration of the facts threatens to undermine their own narratives of widespread human rights abuses and political persecution. Their cause depends on the credibility of stories that are locked inside the world's most secretive nation, making them difficult, and sometimes impossible, to verify.
“I know the truth of North Korea,” Yeonmi said. “The oppression and their tragedy. It cannot be silenced.”
Produced by Todd Krainin. Cameras by Josh Swain.
