Charlotte City Council Backs I-77 Toll Project

It was a crucial vote about one of the region’s most congested roadways. The Charlotte City Council voted twice Monday night to support toll lanes around the region. And specifically the project on I-77 North now under construction. That vote was 7 to 4. This despite many council members accusing State officials of issuing financial threats if they didn’t approve the project.

BlueCross BlueShield is apologizing to customers frustrated by bank account overdrafts and long waits on the phone last week. The problems affected a small percentage of customers in the individual market.

The individual market consists of people who buy insurance directly from an insurance company or on the Obamacare exchanges. BlueCross BlueShield caused about 3,200 of those customers to overdraw their bank accounts.

A woman was booted from a Donald Trump rally in Rock Hill Friday night, after she staged a silent protest and was heckled by Trump supporters. Meanwhile, an off-duty CMPD officer is facing a DWI charge after he was stopped in his own car Saturday. When 94-year-old Wilma Black passed away on December 22, she left behind five children, 16 "known" grandchildren, and an obituary that’s best described as candid and heartbreaking. The News and Observer of Raleigh posted Wilma’s obituary on Thursday. Less than 24 hours later it was taken down, but not before being widely circulated through social media and the subject of TV news reports.

A lawsuit filed last year to stop the toll lane project on I-77 ended Friday when a judge rejected claims that the contract is unconstitutional. Toll opponents now hope they can win a political fight to halt the project.

Howard Levine To Step Down As Family Dollar CEO

Howard Levine is stepping down as chief executive officer of Matthews-based Family Dollar on Jan. 15, the company announced Friday.

Levine’s departure follows Virginia-based Dollar Tree’s acquisition of Family Dollar last summer. At the time, the company had said Levine would remain with the company for two years to assist with the integration, reporting to Dollar Tree CEO Bob Sasser.

The North Carolina Board of Education got some notice this week for something it didn’t do. The board decided to delay forwarding a report on charter schools to state lawmakers. WFAE’s Lisa Worf joins All Things Considered host Mark Rumsey in the studio to discuss.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has recommended several changes to state law that aim to improve safety for cyclists and motorists as they share the road.

But some of the recommendations show the schism that exists between transportation officials and cycling groups.

Now that the State Board of Elections has finalized the ballot for North Carolina’s March 15 primary election, some have commented that voters will face a ‘closed’ primary ballot.

In the parlance of primary elections and political science research, North Carolina uses one of several different forms of primary systems that states have for their election processes.
